Adrien's POV
"I see," Alya mumbles, hurting, "you're telling me you're not Lady Noir, and he's not Mister Bug?"
The three of us are standing in the middle of Marinette's bedroom, stuck in a very tense conversation under the fairy lights. The sun outside has been replaced with stars, and the cool night breeze creeps its way in.
"And you have nothing to say about this, Adrien?" Alya asks, looking towards me with the fire in her eyes gone.
I sigh and look towards the ground.
"Fine," Alya whispers. "Keep your secrets."
"Alya, wait," Marinette calls out, reaching for her best friend.
Alya slaps her hand away from her. She looks up at Marinette and tears fly everywhere.
"Back off, Marinette!" Alya cries, with her voice cracking. It's obvious she's trying to be mad at Marinette but her tears crawling down her cheeks say otherwise.
If marinette can't talk to Alya, then I will. I run towards Alya and grab her shoulder, spinning her around to look at me, but quietly gasp when I realize that she's breaking down infront of us.
Alya sobs. Her knees thud against the wooden floor, and she collapses on the ground in a ball. She holds herself tightly and tears come falling down. Marinette reaches out, but sharply inhales and reaches back.
"I know you two are lying," Alya sobs, "but I won't accuse you. Even if I do, it won't do any good."
She looks up at me, then Marinette, with teary filled eyes.
"This is something you need to admit on your own!"
Marinette holds herself. "Alya- I-"
"No," Alya sharply interrupts. "I don't know if what you'll say next is a lie or not, so instead, I just won't hear it."
"Alya!" I cry out, trying to stop her from leaving Marinette's room without an explanation.
"Shut up!" Alya screams, whipping her head towards me and tears flying through the air. "You are the worst friends I've ever had in my entire life!"
Marinette freezes with a tiny gasp.
Alya stands up and whips open the trapdoor, ready to leave.
"Alya, wait!" Marinette and I both scream at the same time, reaching out for our friend.
She doesn't listen, and instead slams the trapdoor and leaves Marinette's house in furious tears. Both Marinette and I stare at the door, then at each other.
"Why didn't you tell her?" I ask the blunette.
"What do you mean?" She shoots back. "This isn't my fault! You lied too!"
"I just ran with your lie to not make you look bad!" I shout.
Marinette rolls her eyes and crosses her arms, shifting her weight to her right hip. "Ugh, of course. Blame it on me. I didn't know! I looked at you for help and you ignored me!"
I throw my hands in the air. "I'm sorry that I was mad at you!"
"Being mad doesn't make it okay to ignore me!" I shout. "I was wrong, okay? I do need you at times. And I needed you then!"
I blink. "You... you needed me?"
She stutters, but then scoffs and looks away.
I take a step towards her. "I'm sorry, Marinette. I let my emotions get the best of me. I shouldn't have. I should have looked at the bigger picture."
"Do you think she'll be okay?" Marinette asks me in a gentle voice.
I smile a warm smile. "I'm sure she will."
"What do we do then?"
I place my hand on my chin, and an idea pops into my head. "Let's tell her tomorrow. We'll pop into her house and detransform, say hello, and sincerely apologize about today. Then, she might be a little upset, but after that, everything will be okay."
"Yeah..." she softly agrees, looking around her warm, dimly lit room, "let's do that."
I nod with a comforting smile.
I watch as she squeezes herself and holds herself tightly. "I should have told her. I... I don't know why I lied. Maybe because I'm so used to it."
"That's both of us," I whisper, rubbing the back of my neck and smiling an awkward smile.
She smiles a slight smile back. "Who knew that the famous model Adrien Agreste was just a flirt who liked cat puns the whole time."
I laugh.
"Who knew that my lady was just a stuttering mess under the mask!" I tease.
Her face heats up. "My lady?"
"Oh right, I forgot about that. Would you still like me to call you my lady even when we're civilians?" I ask her, grabbing her hand and kissing her knuckles.
She recoils her hand and blushes, ignoring me. "I only stuttered when I was around you! And only because I liked you!"
I take a step towards her and place my hand on the wall above her shoulder, with our noses inches apart. I smirk and tilt my head slightly, looking down on her with a flirtatious look.
"Liked? As in past tense?"
Her bright blue eyes stare deep into mine. I feel her hot breath as I lean into her. Her face is so delicate, accompanied with her rosy cheeks and plump lips.
She freezes and looks up at me with her bright red cheeks. "I-I uh, w-well I mean that I... uh...."
Busted.
I flick her chin up and back away with a cocky smile. "There you go again. Your stutter just happens to come back when I push you against a wall."
She stops her foot. "That's only because I don't know if I like you anymore!"
I grin. "Sure."
"Let's not forget you broke up with me just hours ago!" She reminds me.
I sigh, embarrassed. "Yeah, I regret that. I wanted you to fall in love with Mister Bug instead of me."
She cackles. "But you're the same person???"
I roll my eyes, feeling my cheeks heat up. "I know... it sounded better in my head..."
"No wonder we always go with my plan when we fight akumas!" she taunts.
"Hey!" I snap.
"So, you broke up with me just so I could fall in love with you? Mister Agreste, you're too much," she giggles. "I can't believe we 'broke up' over that."
I grab her hand and pull her towards me. She falls into my arms and places her hands on my chest. I tilt my head and lean into her.
"Unless," I murmur, "you would like me to actually ask you out this time?"
She freezes and her eyes grow big. I feel her heart pound against her chest as she struggles to find the right words.
Suddenly the trap door to her bedroom bursts open. I grab Marinette and move her behind me, standing in a fighting stance in front of her. A girl with heels, black knee high socks, and long black ribbons elegantly steps up Marinette's ladder to the bedroom and smiles with her phone locked in her hand.
"Ah, look at the picture perfect couple," she evilly coos. "Mind if I get a picture? That would go perfect on my Ladyblog, exposing your true identities!"
"Alya!" Marinette shouts from behind me. "She's been akumatized!"
Alya's POV
3 minutes earlier
I slam the trapdoor shut as I run away from Marinette and Adrien, ending our argument dramatically. I slip down the stairs and crash into the floor, and tears come spilling out. I lean against a wall and sob, holding myself for comfort.
My best friend is Lady Noir, and her crush is Mister Bug. Why did I never see it before?
I didn't want to force them to say it, nor accuse them, but I know it's true. They both mysteriously disappear when an akuma battle begins, they both have never gotten akumatized, and they both look exactly like Paris's superheroes.
I just don't understand why they won't tell me.
My speculation started when I saw Marinette and Adrien show up to school one day with their jewelry swapped. They both denied switching it with each other, which I found odd, because the jewelry matched almost identically. Adrien's ring on Marinette was now just tinted slightly pink, almost a rose gold color, and Marinette's earrings were now silver on Adrien's ears.
Then, there was an akuma attack at school. Expecting to see Ladybug and Chat Noir, I was shocked when I saw Mister Bug arrive to the scene. He told me he and his lady were having some problems with the miraculous and couldn't switch back, leaving Mister Bug stuck with Lady Noir's earrings, and Lady Noir stuck with Mister Bug's ring.
It doesn't take a genius to connect the two.
Ever since that point, I would always try and get more info on the two. I would subtly point out Adrien's earrings, and compliment Marinette's ring. I would ask the two where they got the jewelry, and just as planned, both would stutter and make up some lame excuse on why they couldn't remember.
I would make up lame theories on why I thought the Miraculous holders couldn't switch back. I would make them extremely stupid and impossible, just to see Marinette and Adrien's reactions. They would always just nod along with it, not daring to point out the flaws in my theories.
And then Adrien fell for Marinette. Straight up out of the blue. That could only mean one thing. Adrien some how figured out that Marinette was Lady Noir, and he instantly fell in love with her. I would always tell Nino how unusual it was, but he would simply just smile and shake it off.
Eventually the proof got to be too much. I would constantly argue and bicker with Marinette, and Adrien would tell me to drop the topic. They kept lying to me. They kept lying to their friend.
So I don't get it. Why? Why couldn't they tell me? I'm their friend, aren't I? Then why is it such a big deal? Why can't I know?
Why would they lie to me?
I struggle up and hold myself as I drag my feet across the floor and head down to the first floor. I reach the bakery, then open and close the bakery door, leaving me outside on the streets all alone. The sky is dark, and street lamps light up my way home. Instead of leaving, I lean against the rough brick wall and cry.
I clench my phone tightly. I just needed proof. I could take a picture of them detransforming, and then boom, I would be able to confront them. They would tell me I was right. Marinette would tell me she's Lady Noir, and Adrien would tell me he's Mister Bug.
I would help them escape class. I would lie for them to get them out of school work. We would be a team of three, taking down Hawkmoth together.
So why? Why won't they tell me? Why would Marinette look at me dead in the eyes and lie straight to my face?
Why?
WHY?
I slowly start to pick my things up and drag my feet across the sidewalk, slowly making my way home. It's no use worrying or crying over, but I can't help but do both. I feel useless. I feel unwanted. I feel like a failed reporter.
I wipe my eyes and brush the tears off my cheeks, slowly making my way back home. My vision is clearer, now that I've wiped some of the tears away from my vision, but there's something still in my eye. I blink once, then twice, but it's still there. I rub my eyes and put on my glasses, and my vision is sharp.
It's not something in my eye. It's an akuma.
A part of me wants to run. A part of me wants to scream and let Marinette and Adrien save me. A part of me wants to call my friends, and I open my mouth to do so. I turn around and look in Marinette's window, but freeze when I do.
The silhouette of Adrien pushing Marinette against the wall greets me. He's flirting with her and Marinette is softly giggling, enjoying his company without a worry in the world. Not even a worry about lying straight to her friend's face.
Bitch.
So I turn back around and face the akuma, furious. I grip my phone tightly and hold it up to the dark butterfly, pointing straight towards it. I scrunch my face up and glare, feeling the anger and frustration run through my body. I smirk as the akuma phases into my phone, and a purple outline of a butterfly appears in front of my face.
My plan is to be akumatized and then run upstairs to Marinette and Adrien. I'll scare them, make them transform, take their picture, then confront them with evidence. They'll tell me the truth, and not only will they allow me on the team, but they'll finally stop lying to me.
"Dark Aura," I hear the familiar evil voice of Hawkmoth echo through my head, "You're trusted friends lie to your face, thinking you won't know any better."
"Save the speech, old man," I snap. "I'm willing to be akumatized, just make sure that I'm powerful enough to get what I want."
"Ah, a vengeful spirit, are you?" He notices in his low voice.
I roll my eyes. "I'm not vengeful. I just don't want lies. I want the truth. I want a picture."
"And a picture you shall get," The voice informs me. "Dark Aura, I give you the power to take photos that are catastrophic. Once a photo is take of a person, the person shall forget all memory that you deem useful to you."
I smirk. "Perfect, Hawkmoth. Give me a cute costume, and I'll do it."
"Demanding are we?"
"It's called priorities, old man."
Thanks to everyone who gave me their akuma ideas! I loved reading them!
