The gym was completely silent except for the sound of the referee's whistle piercing through the air. After that, a deafening roar sounded from the crowd on one side of you, while the supporters on the other side clapped and complimented you from the stands.
You'd lost.
Your team had played your rival school and you had lost. Your team and your rivals bowed respectfully to one another, even though your opponents were snickering and making rude comments under their breaths.
After your coach had talked to the team in the locker room and informed you when the next practice was, you made a beeline for the exit, quickly telling your teammates that they'd done well despite the loss. They weren't the issue. You were the only person you were disappointed in.
You blinked rapidly to try to hold back the tears as you stepped outside, a cold breeze rushing towards you and chilling you to the bone. The coldness that you felt as you shivered was soon replaced by warmth.
"Hey, (f/n)! Don't leave without me!" Kiyoshi called gently as he wrapped his arm around you and pulled you close to him. When he noticed how hard you were trying to hold back tears, biting your lip until it bled, and trembling slightly, his brown eyes widened. "(F/n)..." You felt him try to stop you from walking, but you pushed him away and continued moving forward.
"Please leave me alone," you snapped quietly, glancing over at him before continuing on your way. Kiyoshi was persistent, though, and he pursued you, walking alongside you silently. You sniffled as you made your way to your house, entering it and tossing your bag onto the floor. "I'm going to take a shower. You should probably go home," you announced.
Before you could get too far away, Kiyoshi grabbed your arm and pulled you closer to him, wrapping you up in a warm hug. You didn't react for a few moments and just stood there, motionless. Eventually, however, you gave in, letting the tears flow from your eyes as you released your pent-up anger and frustration. You buried your face in your boyfriend's shoulder and sobbed as he held you closely, his big hands gently rubbing your aching back and pounding head.
"I feel so useless sometimes, Teppei..." you admitted quietly, "What kind of captain am I if I can't score when my teammates need me most?!" Your grip on his shirt tightened as you felt a wave of anger overcome you. "I made myself look like an idiot out there!"
He patted your head gently before running his hand through your (h/c) locks of hair. "No, you didn't," he assured you gently, "Everyone knows how great of a player you are. You were just having an off day and you were facing a tough opponent. You'll beat them next time, I'm sure of it." You sighed deeply as you closed your eyes and tried to calm down. "All of your teammates respect you and they'll understand that you had a difficult time. It happens to everyone, so just try not to let it get to you too much. And just remember that I'll always be your biggest fan!"
You couldn't help but smile when he said that, and you pulled away from him slightly to look up into his eyes. He gave you a warm smile that made you blush. "Thanks, Teppei." You stood up on your tippy toes and he leaned down towards you to give you a kiss.
"Go ahead and go in the shower and I'll take you out for food when you're ready," Kiyoshi offered.
You nodded and went upstairs to take a quick shower. Once you had dried off and gotten dressed, you returned downstairs and slid on your shoes before walking down the street with Kiyoshi. He held your hand in his own huge one and smiled down at you.
"Could you hear me cheering for you?" he asked.
"Of course," you responded with a smile, "I can hear you no matter how big the gym is."
He chuckled and gave your hand a loving squeeze. Whether you won or lost, you knew that you could always count on him to be there for you, and that was one of the things that you loved so much about him.
