Mother
Echo and Persephone follow Demeter towards the end of her island. The Olympian stumbles over her steps, but Iasion keeps her steady.
"Mother, you need to rest."
"I can't until my part is over."
"Taki would want you to rest," Echo insists.
The goddess of the four seasons stops in her tracks. She clutches her heart from the pain of fate. Her daughter and granddaughter rush over.
"I'm here, my blossom. I'm here," her lover helps her sit in the lush grass.
"Deep breaths," her daughter cups her puffy cheeks. The Underworld queen transfers a portion of warm spring aura to her mother's head.
Echo lends a bit of her grey mountain energy into Demeter's hands. "Be strong and tall as a mountain," she gently smiles.
After a couple of minutes, the Olympian takes the borrowed strength to stand up. She lets out a long exhale. "You're right. He would want me to take it easy."
"And he won't stop until you listen," the mountain nymph jests. "He can be stubborn."
Laughter breaks out from the female trio as the sentence also applied to them. Echo plucks some blooming irises from her uplifted mood.
"What's so funny?" Iason tilts his head.
"Nothing, my dear," Demeter plants a kiss on his cheek. "Let's continue."
"Where are we going again?" Echo questions.
"A quick stop before our destination."
They do a quick wave to Scylla who's lounging near the lake with Glaucus.
At the edge of the island, Persephone steps forward. She closes her eyes to focus on a face and name.
"Odysseus," she whispers.
The appropriate island rotates to them, revealing its sandy shore and autumn-painted trees. They hop across while holding hands.
A small group of boys and girls run over towards them. "Persephone is here!"
The Underworld Queen extends her arms and tries to pick them all up into a hug. "How are all of you?"
Their responses blend into each other with some wanting to tell her all of their activities.
"We're good!" An Ithacan girl embraces her back.
Persephone lets them down, but the little girl stays in her arms. "Layla, have you been good?"
"Yes!" Her smile reveals a small gap between her two top teeth.
"Oh, let me introduce you to the rest of my family. This is my mother, Demeter. She is goddess of the wonderful seasons she brings to you."
The children are in awe of the wheat-colored goddess. They gaze upon the poppies covering her feet and black dress.
"So pretty!" A boy remarks.
"Why, thank you," she smiles.
"Thank you for the snow," Layla smiles. "I love playing in it."
"You're welcome," she glances at her daughter who gives her approval. With a flick of the wrist, her winter wisp lets down snow that covers the beach.
The innocent souls smile with glee. Layla jumps down to feel it between her toes. A pleasant chill doesn't shake her soul. She crunches the snow between her hands before embracing Demeter.
"Thank you."
Echo's eyes water from the sight.
Her aunt, Persephone, wraps an arm around her shoulder. "I know. It still makes me sad, but they will no longer feel pain. And I get to spoil all of the kids just like mother."
"I'm glad," she wipes her eyes.
"Before you all play," the queen interjects. "This is my niece, Echo."
"Wow!" A boy gently touches her rocky hands.
"May I have that purple flower?" Another girl requests.
The mountain nymph removes the purple iris from her crown and places it in the girl's hair. "You look lovely."
"Thank you," she embraces the soft part of her rocky leg.
Echo strokes through her hair with appreciation.
"Oh, and this is my father, Iason," Persephone concludes.
The mortal soul feels a large smile on his face. He stops himself from tearing up.
"Hello!" The kids greet him.
"Hello," he crouches down to their level. "Do you want to make a snow fortress?"
The kids cheer as a response.
"I will play with them while you talk with Odysseus," he delivers a quick kiss to Demeter. "I will find you once I'm done."
Her lips reunite with his own. "Okay." She then asks the kids where to find Odysseus.
They point up to the castle that looks similar to the one on Ithaca. The female trio continues onward...
The former blind king is in the middle of painting with his wife and son when he suddenly bows to Persephone. His wife and son follow suit.
After some quick introductions, Odysseus steps forward. "Is Takashi okay? Did the thunderbolt get him too?!"
"He's safe," Demeter assures them.
A breath of relief leaves his lips.
"What happened to him then?" His wife questions.
Demeter, with help from her family, relays the most important information and that the Fates gave her a way to justice.
"Will-Will we be brought back?" Telemachus chimes in.
"I know Taki will try to bring you back," she answers with precision.
The former king glances down from the neutral statement. He clenches his hands numerous times. "If it can't be done, I know he will be brokenhearted."
"I know," the Olympian squeezes her eyes shut to stop the oncoming tears. "I will let him down gently if it doesn't pan out," she turns her back to them.
"Goddess! Please let him that we aren't upset. He can be too hard on himself," his voice is close to tears.
"We will," Echo promises. "Take care!"
At the bottom of the hill, Demeter stops in her tracks. Her hands tremble more than a leaf.
"Mother, what's wrong?!"
"S-Stay back!" The aura of the four seasons reflects the biting winds of winter.
Persephone counters with a shield of summer warmth to protect the mountain nymph. Echo's eyes shake from the side of her grandma she had never seen. Raging winds with a center of sadness.
"MOTHER!"
Her daughter's plea brings her back. The winds settle along with the Olympian's black dress. "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry," she looks down in shame.
The Underworld queen kisses her forehead. "Never be ashamed of your power. Can...you tell us?"
"I-I can't."
Echo staggers forward. "Is it about Takashi?"
Demeter's lips want to say yes, but nothing comes out. "He's alright," she exhales. "I know it was going to happen, but it still hurts to see."
"What happened?" The nymph squints her eyes.
"Something that had to be done, grandchild."
A blue iris withers away on Echo's crown. "I wish I also knew so you wouldn't be alone in this."
The Olympian's soft hand cups her cheek. "Your presence is more than enough," she smiles. "Now, come. I want you to meet someone."
"Who?"
"You'll know once you see them," Persephone responds with a gentle smile.
After reuniting with a snow-covered Iason, they leap across to another island.
Hues of pink, red, white, blue, and violet flowers grace the soles of their feet.
Echo's sensitive ears perk up. A melody from the past makes her heart bounce with excitement. Her feet run off in that direction with tears freely flowing down her face.
The soles of her feet barely touch the ground until she sees him. The music from the lute stops. A man in a white tunic with red sleeves turns to her steps.
He pushes back his chestnut hair. His dark chocolate eyes smile at seeing her again.
Her rocky arms wrap around him. "Father!"
His arms embrace his only child. The nymph receives a kiss on the top of her head. Persephone and Demeter quietly sit down in the grass to witness this moment.
He wipes his daughter's face with his sleeves. "I missed you, my darling Echo," his voice nearly booms.
"I missed you too." White, pink, and blue flowers almost cover her face.
His rough fingers gently pluck the beautiful florets to decorate the ground. "Have you stayed out of trouble?"
"No," she chuckles.
A hearty laugh escapes his mouth. "That's my daughter! What did you get into this time?"
Echo takes a deep breath and lets out everything that happened to her. Her father leans forward with receptive ears to her quick tone of speech. Every syllable is processed quickly in his mind. Minutes go by until she takes a breath.
He holds her close. "I'm so sorry. Artemis and you were thick as thieves. I only pray that she will return to you."
"I hope so too," she leans her head on his shoulder. "Oh, I'm sorry for telling you that all at on-"
"Shh," he brushes through her hair. "That's one of the best qualities that came from your mother. Never be ashamed of that."
A wide smile graces her face before embracing him tighter than before. His soul feels no pain from the sharp edges of her arms.
He gives her the same treatment. "There, there. Oh, greetings, sister," he tells Persephone.
The goddess smiles. "Nice to see you again."
"And Iason is here too! Mother, it's also nice to see you."
Demeter rushes over to join the hug. "I'm glad you're here, Arion."
The group hug is joined by the queen and another.
The goddesses and Arion smile widely, knowing the identity. Echo's nose tells her a scent that matches her very own. Flowers with a mountain breeze.
Demeter and Persephone drift away to give them space.
"You have grown to be so beautiful," a high pitch, but pleasant voice whistles to Echo.
The nymph slowly turns her head.
It was like looking in a mirror.
One key difference between the two is the crown of stalagmites that shine from Elysium's light.
Echo's heart and mind slow down.
The woman crouches down to her eye level. Heavy tears drip to the ground as she traces Echo's face with her hands of rock. Time almost slows down as the realization settles in the nymph's mind.
Her lips quiver. "M-Mother?"
Adrasteia presses her forehead against her. "I finally see you."
She latches onto her. Endless tears and flowers drop between them.
Her mother holds her head close to her beating heart. The blessed gift she had never gotten the chance to embrace until now. Her hands admire the crown of beauty bestowed on her daughter. "My little princess," she sobs.
"Mommy," she whimpers.
"I'm here, my child. I'm here."
They sink to their knees with their embrace. Adrasteia's hands pluck the blooming flowers off her daughter's head with a gentle touch.
Echo's hands dig deep to keep her mother in her presence. Her heart and mind feel the invisible boulder of mystery rolling away. Joy now occupies those spaces.
After some time, Arion wraps his arms around both of them. His tight hug completes their family.
He and his wife lift their daughter's head to gaze into her eyes. Each of them uses a hand to dry her face.
"I have so many questions," Echo tells her mom.
"And I will answer them all," she brushes through the nymph's hair. "But first, tell me about your boyfriend. I think I missed a bit," she smirks.
"He's too young for me at the moment now," she clutches her hands.
"Your father was around 18 when we fell in love. He climbed up a mountain to find some peace and quiet. He didn't even know he went over my home," her manner of speech gets quicker by the second. "Scared him a bit. He almost fell off until I caught him. He would then serenade me every night since then. One thing led to another, and we had you. And now you're here."
The nymph smiles from ear to ear that she got her quick tone from her. "That's so romantic! But, mother. It's a lot different for me. He's...uhm...too young," she emphasizes.
Adrasteia raises her eyebrows. "Ohhhhh. Well, you just have to wait then or maybe fate will help you two before that. I want all the grandchildren you can give me," she laughs.
Echo turns redder than a tomato. "Mommy, stop! That's too quick," a chuckle escapes her lips.
"Maybe so. Still, he will be lucky to have you."
The two embrace again.
"I can almost picture him. Sweet, tall, handsome with a skin of bronze. He also saved my life," she smiles.
"You hear that, Arion? Our grandchildren will turn out so beautiful!"
"They shall," he kisses her lips.
The group sits back with content from the family reunion.
Iason has Demeter rest her head on his shoulder. "Take a nap, my blossom. Please," he begs.
"Just for a bit," she closes her eyes. A brief smile is on her face from what Takashi had just gone through.
I will be doing my part soon, Taki. It's terrifying, but..I will regain who I really am. This journey is giving me the strength to reobtain it.
Wait for me until then.
