CHAPTER 14

Rebecca's Pov
"Rebecca honey" My bedroom door swung open to reveal my mom. She walked over to me with a black & white stripped apron tied around her waist. Her hair, face, body and apron were massively coloured with flour. "Did you push someone off the stairs, Rebecca?" She asked, her hands on her hips.

I sat up on my bed, assessing her with an amused look on my face. I grunted, holding my hands over my mouth as I tried to hold back my growing laughter.

"Well?" She questioned, raising her brows at me.

I threw my hands in the air "Oh great! that money minded, two faced, leech is here again to suck on more of our blood"

"Don't refer to your principal Lisa like that"

I rolled my eyes "How much money has it been this week? Seriously, why does dad let her have her way? Are we a trust fund for that charity case?"

"She looks out for you and you know just how much your dad loves you"

She face-palmed me with her flour stained hands and I let out a surprise squeak, both of us laughing "You're doing that thing again where you try and change the topic to avoid scolding"

I chuckled, wiping some flour off my face "You know your daughter so well"

She gave me a playful spank on the cheek "We've gone over this a million times Rebecca. Stop making trouble at school. You'll ruin your dad's reputation"

"Ugh!" I let out a loud groan. I was sick of her nagging.

As if his reputation wasn't already ruined.

If you think I'm a nagger, my mom's worse. You should see how she breathes down my dad's neck when she wants something plush.

"Anyway, forget that" I said, pulling her down next to me "Tell me, how did you get flour on you?" I laughed, holding a strand of her hair up "You look like a white witch"

"You naughty girl" she joked, yanking her hair away from my grip "I was trying to make biscuits. When I was getting the flour I tripped and it fell over me"

"Biscuits?" I smiled, raising my brows "Since when did you make Biscuits yourself?"

"I fired all the cooks today" she said, crossing one leg over the other "Those layabouts were getting on my last nerves, and apparently the agency won't be able to send anyone down here until tomorrow"

"And how is that biscuit coming along?" I asked, my guts telling me that this was going to turn out to be a disaster.

"Why don't you try it for yourself?" She beamed "I'm a natural born baker"

"I don't think so" I teased, laughing.

She smiled, nodding "We'll see" She spoke into the intercom. "Nanny Clara, bring some biscuits up to Rebecca's room"

In a few minutes nanny Clara walked in, placing the plate of biscuits on the table before leaving.

I picked up the crookedly love-shaped biscuit, taking a bite.

"How is it?" she asked, watching the movement of my mouth.

I made faces as I savoured it in my mouth. "It's...It's uhm..."

"It's horrible, isn't it?"

"Yes it is" I blurted, spitting it out "It's totally disgusting. I'll literally die if I take another bite"

We broke into an elevated laughter.

"Let's just order" she suggested.

"You should have done that sooner" I agreed, picking up my phone to order.

Jake's Pov
Rebecca and her dopey friends didn't show up in school the next morning; which was odd. Perhaps they were scared of facing Kristen, or Ray. But then again, maybe not. Rebecca wasn't the type of person to run from anyone, but those two, yea.

Kisten was closing her locker by the time I stepped out of the locker room.

"Hey!" I yelled, flashing her a smile from across the hallway. I jogged over to her, falling into step with her.

"Hey" she replied calmly, not sparing me a glance.

But woah, she said hey to me. Don't mean to be dramatic here, but that was kind of a big deal.

"You good?" I asked, looking at the little bandage at the side of her head. She seemed better than yesterday.

She nodded, meeting my eyes "I gotta go to my class in the next block"

I nodded with a smile, glad that we had a descent conversation for once "See you in our next class" I dug my hands in my pocket as I watched her leave.

As she climbed up the stairs, I spotted Ray coming down the same stairs with his head down,  and his hands in his pocket. When he finally got closer, and their eyes met, he nervously let his hand out of his pocket. They both stood there, gawking at each other for some good minutes.

And I thought I saw her mouth a thank you. I wasn't sure until I saw a gorgeous smile stretch across his face and his eyes light up.

I grinned. They were cute.

          ~~ * ~~

Mr Byron's class had been going on for a while now. I had long blanked out, lost in whatever he was babbling on about.

I rested my head on my table, my eyes fixated on Kristen, as I tried to study this hard human puzzle. She was sitted at my right, scribbling something on the table with her pen. She played with her pen, her eyes wondering around till they fell on me. She gave me a bored look and I winked at her, smiling.

She looked away from me, throwing her hand into her leather bag in search of something. She held her phone out, taking a sneak at it from the side of her bag.

Then her eyes fell into a haze, fear overriding them. She folded her lips as she tried to hold back the tears. And then a tear dropped on her table, then another, and another. I could tell she was fidgeting in her seat. I noticed the tremoring of her hands as she hastily struggled to fit her textbook in her bag.

I bolted upright on my seat, watching her closely. Fear gripped me, my eyes swirling in utter confusion. I turned to Laura and Bella behind me who were also watching her with a look of disarray on their faces.

Unable to fit the textbook in her bag, she clutched it in her hand, marching abruptly past Mr. Byron.

"Garcia!" He called, with that constant, stern look on his slightly wrinkled face. She stopped at the door, whirling around to face him.

"I really have to go" Her eyes cried desperately; the ever first sign of vulnerability I'd seen in them "Please" And she scurried out, the sound of her timberlands giving a distressed lyric to the quiet hallway as she ran.

Then some combined telepathy thrust Laura, Bella and I simultaneosly up on our feets.

"Mr Byr..."

He cut me off before I could say anything further.

"Sit back down you three!" He snapped, pointing his maker at us.

All the students shot us odd looks. They didn't seem to notice Kristen's strange exit. No one gave a damn. Ray would have, but he didn't take this class.

"Now!" He commanded, his eyes widening.

But I knew I just couldn't let her go like this. I'd regret it. I looked at Bella and Laura. Their eyes channeled my exact thoughts.

"I'm sorry Mr Byron" I apologized. I darted towards the door, Bella and Laura running behind me in a row.

"Jake!. Come back here you three!" He yelled after us, rushing to the door.

We ran faster. We just didn't care. Kristen was more important.

"I'll throw you three out of my class!" He threatened, stamping his feet grumpily to the floor as we scooted down the stairs that led out of this block.

When we finally made it to the main gate, Kristen was gone.

"She's gone" Laura breathed, resting her hands on her knees, catching her breath.

"What now?" I breathed heavily, resting my hands on my hips. "We have no idea where she lives" I huffed, frustrated at the thought of her going through whatever got her to go off like that alone.

"Please Lord, let Kristen be okay" Bella pleaded, heaving, as she looked up to the sky.

Something was wrong. Something huge. Just what had she seen on her phone that frightened her like that?
