Furry Friend: Minhwa
The sound of a front door unlocking caused the Siberian Husky to raise it's head up and whine, before standing and going to greet his owners. The taller red head leans down and rubs his head affectionately, scratching his ears and chin, "Hey boy, we have some good news."
The one beside the red head, smiles as he sits in the floor. The husky walks over to him and sniffs at his face before a timid tongue poke out and licks his cheek. The black haired male giggles, "Kito, can you sense something's different about me?" He asks, his blue eyes shine with excitement and the dog makes a grumble noise before sitting in front of him.
"You're going to have a new friend running around here," the red head chuckles, holding up a black and white photo with a small white blob in the center of a black mass, "Here in about eight months."
Kito licks his muzzle, leaning forward and sniffs the photo before huffing and moving away from it. He walks over to his bed and picks up his tennis ball, sitting back down in front of the black haired human and dropping it in his lap. The human laughs, "Are you wanting to play Kito? See if Mingi will play, I'll go get you some food," he stands, handing the ball to the red head, Mingi, and Kito instantly switched from concerned to playful.
Over time, the black haired man, who Mingi calls Seonghwa, started showing signs of not being himself. Kito has noticed that every morning Seonghwa would race to the bathroom and make choking and coughing sounds behind the door before he exits and goes to make breakfast. He always gave Kito a piece of bacon or sausage when he cooked, he was Kito's favorite human to go to for food.
The other owner, Mingi, was his favorite human to go to when he wanted to play. They could play for hours and hours, but some days when they do his human lays in bed and won't get up. Seonghwa would look concerned when he did, but within two days he's back on his feet and playing with Kito once more.
They originally rescued him from a local humane society. He was just a puppy, brought into the shelter when he was nine weeks old and was originally a gift for Seonghwa on his birthday. He remembers the day clearly, Mingi wrapped a blue bow that he wanted to chew on around his neck. And when it came time to present himself to Seonghwa he was so excited he peed himself!
It earned him a scolding from the black haired man, but he is a quick learner and went outside from that point on!
And now at the age of two, he's full grown and calmer now especially after his humans had him neutered when he had tried to protect them at the park from a chihuahua snarling at them. He was not going to stand by and let his humans get growled and snarled at by some puny mutt! So, he may or may not have snapped at the chihuahua and caused a fight between the humans.
Their excuse for neutering Kito was because he was aggressive. He wasn't aggressive, he was just protective of his humans!
Anyway, back to his story of his human Seonghwa.
He's noticed changes. His smell has changed, almost sweeter. He was more tired and took more naps on the couch during the day than he used to before. He didn't cook certain foods that were yummy, they would make him choke and he would run to the room with the large water bowl.
Kito loved to cuddle with him, and often laid by his feet, but after sensing these changes in his human he would lay his head on Seonghwa's lap and nuzzle his muzzle in Seonghwa's hard belly that was starting to grow as well. Man, and they tell him he's getting fat!
As time goes on, Seonghwa's belly grew rounder and the humans started directing his belly as 'the baby.' He tries to look for this baby and sniff it out, but all he can see is Seonghwa's belly when he sniffs it. Where is this baby?
"Come here Kito," Seonghwa coos to him, making kissy sounds as his signal to come to him. Kito obeys, and places a paw on Seonghwa's lap. Seonghwa chuckles, holding a hand out, "Paw." Again, Kito obeys by placing a large paw in Seonghwa's hand. "Good boy," Seonghwa praises him which causes his tail to wag.
Seonghwa chuckles, placing Kito's paw on his belly gently and smiling. Kito felt something shift under his paw and instantly withdrew his hand, backing away in shock. What was that? Seonghwa laughs, "Your new friend just wants to say hello Kito. Can you say 'Hello Ryker?'"
Ryker? Is this a new human? His tail starts to wag again and he yips. Seonghwa laughs, cupping Kito's furry face in his hands and placing a kiss on his muzzle, "Good boy, you're such a good boy."
More time goes by, and Kito has finally come to the conclusion that this 'baby' is named 'Ryker,' his new human he gets to love and protect. Seonghwa's belly continued to grow, he and Mingi played many games with him that earned him treats. Many involved a small chair like contraption that sat in the living room floor with a baby doll in it. If he left it alone, he got a treat. If he licked the baby doll once and gently, he got a treat.
He couldn't sit with this baby doll in the chair which confused him, but as long as he obeyed he knows he'll get yummy treats. He even got to dip his paw in this weird smelling liquid and placed it on the wall next to their prints! The room that was once Mingi's office was now a room with dark black, white and grey designed walls (he can't see in color so he assumes it's black) and a large cage like bed. They had a soft rug on the hardwood floor with different animals printed over it and Kito loved to lay on it at night when the humans slept.
Time continues to go by, and one night Kito was awoken from the room to hear Mingi gathering things quickly. His ears perk up with alertness, and when he heard Seonghwa make a noise, he stands and instantly runs to find his human. He was in their bed, holding his large belly and his face scrunched up in pain, Kito jumped on the bed whining and trying to nuzzle his hands that held his belly with his nose.
But Mingi stepped in and clapped his hands, "Kito! Down!"
"He's okay," Seonghwa pants harshly, one hand stayed on his belly while the other scratches Kito's ears, "He's just worried about me."
"San said he would come over to feed him and take him outside while we were at the hospital," Mingi spoke, and Kito tilts his head.
The hospital? What's that? And why are his human's going to it? He did hear the name San and yipped quietly, causing Seonghwa to shush him softly before his human placed a kiss on his head, "Don't worry buddy, San will take care of you while we go have Ryker. We'll bring him home later and you can officially meet! Meet your new friend!"
Kito's tail wags once more as his tongue pops out of his mouth in a lazy grin. And just like that, his humans were leaving the house to him. He sat at the door for a while, whining and waiting. But when the sun started to rise, he heads back to the small room with the cage like bed, laying on the soft rug by it.
He was sad. Why did his humans leave him? Why didn't they take him with them? He wanted to meet Ryker too, his new friend...
For the next two days, he seen the other human known as San, who stopped by and fed him and filled up his water. He also took him outside and played with him for many hours before he left as well. Everyone was leaving Kito and it made him sad.
On the third day, he started to pace the house as he waited. San showed up to take him outside to go potty and to play, and other humans started to show up as well. Humans he knows but doesn't see as often so he's unsure of their names. He didn't like how they were messing in Seonghwa's clean kitchen and making so much noise!
He did like smell all kinds of yummy foods they were making, but before he could even beg for a bite from one, a human named Jongho was leading him to the living room and locked him in his kennel. He hated his kennel, and started to bark, pawing at it to be released.
His humans would never put him in here unless he chewed a shoe or he had an accident! He continued to bark louder to be released, until the front door opened and Kito's ears perk up. He heard the sound of Mingi's keys jingling and starts wagging his tail in excitement.
And the moment of truth, as soon as he caught sight of his humans his tongue pokes out from his dopey grin and he yaps to get their attention. Seonghwa shushed him, a soft smile on his face as he walked over to Kito to release him from his kennel. Kito goes to jump on him, and Seonghwa instantly holds his hands up, "Ah! No! No jumping!"
Kito sits his butt on the ground, but he was so excited he couldn't keep it still and wiggles it back and forth. Seonghwa giggles, leaning down to kiss his head before scratching his ears, "Hey buddy, did you miss us? We missed you too, but we brought you back a new friend!"
Kito follows close to Seonghwa as he leads him over to Mingi, who was holding a large basket like contraption in his hand. Seonghwa stopped and Kito did as well, "Kito, sit." Kito sat. Once he did, Mingi sits the basket down on the floor in front of him to reveal a tiny human bundled up in a blanket.
Kito tilts his head, his eyes look over the human before Mingi kneels down, "Kito, meet your new friend Ryker."
So this is Ryker. Kito leaned forward to sniff him out before making a grumble noise of distaste. He smelt like the vet's office, only instead of other dogs and cats he smelt of other humans. Ones that didn't smell like Seonghwa and Mingi. Seonghwa laughs, "He's tiny right now, but when he gets older you guys will play and play and play till you pass out from exhaustion."
Kito wags his tail at the mention of playing. Yes, he wants to play with Ryker! He wants him to throw a ball or to run around with him! Kito whines, leaning his head down to gently poke the tiny human's foot that was peeking out from under the blanket with his cold, wet nose.
Ryker did not like the action though and started to cry angrily. Kito backs away, what did he do!? Did he hurt the tiny human?! He backs further away from him and Mingi chuckles while Seonghwa gets Ryker out of the basket, "It's alright buddy, he's okay," he grabs a treat bag and gives Kito a yummy treat, Kito wags his tail happily as he ate it, "Good dog Kito, such a good boy."
It took him a bit to get used to the new human crying, especially at night time when the humans were supposed to be sleeping but one would wake up to come make Ryker stop crying. Kito would just follow wherever they took him, he had to make sure Ryker was okay, most of the time it was Seonghwa feeding him. He would just sit in the doorway and watch cautiously, ready to step in when he needed to.
And during the day when he laid in the small chair in the living room, Kito laid right beside it as he slept. He followed them everywhere, and even got to go on walks with them at the park! But he couldn't go play with other dogs, he had a mission to protect Ryker and his humans.
More time seemed to fly by, and Ryker grew before Kito's eyes. He was there when the human started crawling, he crawled with him occasionally. He was there to help Ryker walk, occasionally he would fall and start to cry but Kito was quick to lick his face before nudging his body with his nose for him to stand up. Ryker even calls him, "Ki." It took him a moment to learn the new name, the human must not be advanced in talking yet so Kito accepted the nickname.
They got into tons of mischief together, from dumping the cereal on the floor for Kito to eat, to Kito getting the zoomies from being so excited and running all over the house. Ryker was always there with him to do these and he always giggled when Kito did something silly. Ryker even tried to color the white of his fur with these hard, yucky, wax sticks but it ended up hurting him so Kito didn't stick around long.
More time flew by, Ryker was now in this thing called preschool. A big dark bus came down the street and started picking him up every other day. When it first started, Kito didn't like it. They were taking his human and he was gone majority of the day before he came back on the dark bus and Seonghwa picked him up at the end of their driveway.
All too soon, Seonghwa's belly was round again and a new baby was entering his life. Kito heard the name many times, Oaklynn, resonant between his humans and Ryker. Oaklynn this time is a little girl, and Kito would have to get used to her playing with him and Ryker as well as get used to his fur being pulled on and his tail.
The day they brought her home Kito didn't even hardly realize she was there. Sure she cried, and sure she whined, but she slept all the time and hardly made a sound. Kito's new sleeping position was in the hallway between both of their bedrooms on the small rug that used to be in Ryker's room. Just in case one of them needed him, he was an earshot away.
And Oaklynn was nicer to Kito than Ryker. She never pulled his fur, and never pulled his tail. She gave him lots of kisses and fed him bits and pieces of her cereal when they were all eating together. The little girl became the second light of his life.
By now, Kito is twelve years old, Ryker was ten and Oaklynn was five almost six. Kito knew he was an old man, his joints hurt when he walked and often needed help getting up on the couch or on a bed. He hasn't been feeling the best here lately and started noticing his right eye slowly losing vision.
His humans, including Seonghwa, were often worried about him and Seonghwa many times would lay on the couch with him and stroke his ears and the fur on his head, "You're such a good boy Kito. You're always a good boy. I love you so much."
Kito's heart melted and showed his love by licking the black haired man's hand, before curling up and falling asleep next to him. He slept more now a days, and he knew it upset the humans when he did, especially the children wanting him to play.
By the time he was fourteen, he had no eyesight, he moved around the house really slow, and his humans mentioned taking him to the vet, but he can hardly hear anything anymore. To him it's all mumbled and he can't hear unless he is yelled at by Mingi.
One day, he felt so weak and tired, he couldn't get up. It hurt to move and he whined for the humans to help him. Mingi and Seonghwa often gave him medicine to help with the pain but it only helps for a small amount of time before he was hurting again.
On his last night alive, Mingi and Seonghwa made sure to put the kids to bed after they gave him lots of hugs and kisses. They were for sure this was going to be Kito's last night and Seonghwa didn't want him to be alone when he died. He slept with him in the floor until early in the morning, he often woke up and checked on Kito.
"Mingi I don't want to leave him," Seonghwa sniffles, his voice breaking as he tries not to cry, "He doesn't deserve to die alone. I don't want him to be scared."
"I know baby," Mingi whispers, watching as his husband gently pets the older dog who's head was in his lap, "maybe he is wanting us to leave so we won't see him. He wants to go in peace."
Seonghwa nods, wiping a tear away, "You're right, I'll take the kids to school and then head to the store for a grocery run. Maybe while I'm gone..." Seonghwa's chin wobbles as he leans down and kisses Kito's head. Before they left, Seonghwa places a blanket on Kito and places more kisses on his head and muzzle, "I love you Kito, you're a good boy," he whispered.
The kids took turns saying good bye, and then everyone leaves for the day. Seonghwa didn't get home until later in the day, bringing in groceries himself and heading straight to the kitchen to put them away. The air did seem... lighter almost? He wasn't sure how to explain it. He was kind of terrified to look in the living room or to go see Kito, but he knew he had to.
Once the groceries were put away, he walks over to the small doggie bed in the corner and kneels down. Almost right away he can see Kito's body isn't moving from him breathing. The lump in his throat grew as he reaches a shaking hand out to pet the old dog's head. He didn't even open his eyes.
Seonghwa sobs, his hand moves down to pet Kito's back, his once warm furnace like body is now ice cold and starting to get stiff. He hasn't been dead long. He grabs his phone and sent Mingi a text, then grabs the soft blanket and places it over Kito's body. He presses one more longing kiss to his "puppy's" forehead and whispers, "Good boy Kito, you always were a good boy."

I know this is sad, but I really wanted to try something different and write something in an animal's perspective preferably a dog. I'm more of a dog person so this was something I thought of last night and did before I went to bed 😆
This one is for all of the dog lovers and anyone who's lost an animal they were close to ❤️
