You threw your face into your pillow and kicked your feet excitedly. You looked at your phone again, reading the message from Ryujin: Iseul, if you're not busy later will you meet me at the park? The stars are supposed to be really pretty tonight.

You texted Ryujin back to let her know you would love to meet her later and threw your phone across the room. What would you wear? You didn't want to look like you tried but you also didn't want to look like you didn't care.

Your phone started ringing so you grabbed your phone, sighing when you saw the caller. "Hey, babe."

"Hey, Iseul," your boyfriend replied. "What are you doing later?"

"Uh," you paused. "I'm meeting Ryujin later. What's up?"

Chiwoo sighed. "You weren't gonna tell me?"

"We just made the plans." You said.

"You need to tell me that stuff, especially if it's with Ryujin."

"Especially?" You questioned.

"Whatever," Chiwoo said. "Have fun, I guess."

He hung up and you let your arm fall to your side. Chiwoo had been your boyfriend for nearly a year and he was fairly controlling. He certainly hovered. You sighed and went to your closet to pick an outfit, and you decided on some black pants and a tight t-shirt that hugged your waist just above the waistband of your pants.

By the time you got ready and cleaned your room a bit, it was time to head out. You drove to the park and found Ryujin's car, parking next to it. She was leaning up against her door waiting for you, and she quickly went to your door to open it for you. She even held her hand out to help you out of the car.

"Hey, Ryu."

"Hey, pretty girl."

You hugged her neck, then she took your hand and took you to the spot where the stars would be the prettiest. You sat down, your shoulder touching Ryujin's as both of you looked up at the sky.

"They're almost as pretty as you." You whispered.

She awed and nudged your shoulder. "I wish we could watch the stars together all the time."

You looked at her. "We could."

"But Chiwoo-"

"Will be fine," you gently cut her off and smiled. "I've been wanting to end things with him. I need to be honest with myself."

Ryujin nodded. "If you break up with him we could finally kiss."

You tilted your head at her as she broke out into a smile. You cupped her cheek and leaned in, just before your lips met hers. "Can I?"

"Please do."

You closed the gap and kissed her. After daydreaming about kissing her and being with her, you were finally kissing her and it felt like heaven on Earth. You had never felt this way when kissing Chiwoo, and you always knew why.

"What are you doing?"

You and Ryujin jumped away from each other at the sound of Chiwoo's voice. You got to your feet as he barreled towards you, then he pushed you back so hard that you were right back on the ground. When you looked back, he had a handful of Ryujin's hair in his hands. He was yelling but you couldn't hear a word he was saying.

You stood up and ran towards him, trying to push him back in a way that wouldn't hurt Ryujin. When he finally let go of her, he grabbed you instead. He was dragging you away.

You looked back at Ryujin who was rubbing the spot that Chiwoo grabbed. "I'm so sorry, Ryujin!"

She mouthed "It's okay," and before you knew it, you were being thrown into Chiwoo's car and he drove off and into the woods. He parked his car and turned to you, and you knew it wouldn't be pretty.

He had never gotten physical with you before, but you could no longer say that as he grabbed your throat and jumped over the console to be on top of you. The rest was history as he busted your lip and certainly left some bruises, then he threw you out of his car and told you to walk back on your own.

"And," he paused as you looked up at him. "We're over."

He drove off and left you in the dark. The only thing you could do was get up and go back to your car, despite the pain you felt. When you made it back to the park, you realized that Ryujin's car wasn't there.

She didn't wait for you. She didn't even try to get you away from Chiwoo when he was dragging you away. You tried not to think of it that way but the opening pit in your stomach said otherwise.

You slid into the driver seat and rested your head on the headrest, then you headed home. It was nearly eleven pm when you walked through the front door, but your dad was awake on the couch, his arms crossed.

"Oh, honey," he rushed over to you and looked at your face. "What happened?"

Your eyes started watering as you hugged your father. "Can I tell you something without you getting upset?"

"Always, Iseul."

"I like Ryujin, a lot," you told him. "I don't like boys, Dad."

He patted your head. "There's nothing wrong with that, Iseul. You're allowed to like whomever you want. But how does that tie into you being beaten?"

"Chiwoo caught me and Ryujin kissing and," a sob caught in your throat. "He dragged me away and she didn't even help me."

"I'm sure that if she knew he would do this she would have helped you," he whispered, looking down at you. "You get back at him. I know you don't like when I get involved, so I want you to handle this how you see fit."

"He broke up with me," you sighed. "That's good at least."

Your father hugged you again. "Don't let a man control you, honey. Show him the woman he lost."

You nodded against his chest and when he let go, he shook his head. "Do you want me to help you clean up?"

"No, I got it. Thank you, though."

"Okay," he nodded as you headed for the stairs. "Don't be too upset with Ryujin, okay? Neither one of you was ready for what Chiwoo did."

You nodded again and disappeared into your room. You locked yourself in the bathroom and looked at yourself in the mirror. You looked like hell. Your left eye was swelling and a gnarly bruise was forming, your bottom lip was covered in dried blood, and your neck was bruised where Chiwoo was strangling you. You decided not to clean up yet, and instead, you grabbed your keys and told your dad you were going to the police station.

When you walked in looking the way you did, all officers kept their eyes on you. "I would like to report an assault."

"Come with me," a male officer said, and when you didn't budge, he tilted his head. "Let's go."

"I want a female officer as well, please."

One of the two female officers stood up and smiled at you. "Let's go, doll."

You walked with her and found yourself sitting in an interrogation room with her and the male officer.

"What's your name?"

"Yang Iseul."

"Who assaulted you?"

"Han Chiwoo, my ex-boyfriend."

The male officer looked up from his laptop. "What did you do?"

Your eyebrows jumped and the female officer quickly leaned forward. "What did he do, Iseul?"

"I will admit that he caught me cheating on him," you started. "He caught me kissing a girl and he lost his temper. He even grabbed her hair."

"And then?" The male officer prodded.

"He took me to his car and drove off into the woods. He did this," you motioned to your neck, then your face. "This was the first time he ever got physical with me, but he didn't like when I would spend time with the girl I was with tonight."

"What's her name?" The male officer asked.

"She didn't witness the assault so I don't see the need to get her involved by name." You replied.

The male officer shut his eyes. "If you want us to do something about it, we need all of the details."

"You'll do something about it regardless because he did this to me."

"You cheated on him."

You leaned forward and looked the male officer dead in the face. "Do you hit your significant other when they do something wrong?"

He furrowed his eyebrows and glanced at the ring on his finger, then moved his hand under the table. "That's none of your business."

"Give the laptop to Officer Liu, I'm done speaking to you."

The male officer scoffed and pushed the laptop to his female colleague, promptly leaving the room.

"I'm sorry, Iseul," Officer Liu shook her head. "There's no excuse for him. So what did you want to do tonight? Do you want to press charges?"

You shook your head. "No, but I do want a restraining order."

"Okay, dear," she began typing. "Are you still in school?" You nodded. "We'll file the restraining order and we'll send a copy to the school, as well as contact him and his guardian. How does that sound?"

"Good."

She smiled and finished typing. "Let me help you with your wounds. That's the least I can do for you."

You smiled and nodded, so she took you back out, grabbed the first aid kid as well as something off of the printer, and then walked you to the bathroom. She began cleaning your lip for you and you couldn't help but think about Ryujin. She hadn't even texted you.

"My wife and I have been married for three years now," Officer Liu suddenly confessed. "We dated in high school when we were about your age, and we faced the same kind of thing you're going through. A lot of hatred. But we knew that being honest with ourselves was the best thing to do, and now we're happier than ever."

She bandaged your lip and took a step back. "It'll be really hard but I can tell you're a fighter. If you want her, don't let her slip away because of society, okay?"

You nodded and thanked her as she handed you a copy of your restraining order. She sent you off and you hurried back home. Your dad fell asleep on the couch waiting for you, so you put a blanket over him and then went upstairs. You got ready for bed and grabbed an ice pack out of your mini fridge to put on your eye.

You thought you wouldn't be able to sleep with all of the thoughts bouncing around your head, but the warmth of your blankets lulled you right to sleep.

___

The following morning, your eye looked worse, as did the bruise on your neck. You weren't sure why you thought they would look any better but you also knew there wasn't much you could do about it. You put on some jeans and a fitted long-sleeved shirt. You weren't going to try and cover the bruise on your neck. If anyone was that curious, they could ask.

You went downstairs with your things and sat at the table. Your dad went to work early, but he prepared your favorite breakfast since he knew you were having a tough time. You silently, happily, ate the delicious meal made with love, then headed out to school.

As you headed toward the school entrance, you felt like the restraining order in your pocket was burning a hole through your jeans. It made you anxious, but not as anxious as the whispers you heard as you walked through the halls. You couldn't blame them, you would be curious as well.

You went to class and sat at your desk, trying to pull up the collar of your shirt. Now that you were sitting in an enclosed space, you felt suffocated by the glances you were getting. You sighed as someone sat next to you, and when you looked over, Ryujin's jaw dropped.

"Did Chiwoo do that?" She whispered.

You nodded. "Yeah."

"I'm so sorry, Iseul," she grabbed your hand under the table. "I should have helped you like you helped me."

"Yeah," you sighed. "But it happened and there's nothing we can do about it. At least I'm single now."

Ryujin gave you a small smile. "Are you gonna get him back?"

"I filed a restraining order," you told her. "No point in being violent with violence. It would never work."

"You're better than me," she whispered. "I know I hurt you, Iseul. I should have followed the two of you, I don't know why I didn't-"

"Ryujin, it's okay," you cut her off sweetly. "You apologized and that's all I can ask for. Plus, you're not the person who needs to apologize, okay? We're all good."

She nodded slowly just as the teacher walked in, and Ryujin quietly slipped her hand out of yours and back into her lap.

Around lunchtime, you went to the front office and quietly waited until Ms. Jeong was through with her phone call. She put the receiver down and smiled at you sympathetically.

"What can I do for you, Iseul?"

"I just wanted to give you guys this, have you file it," you said. "It's a restraining order on Han Chiwoo."

She glanced at your neck, how the imprints of his hands were so clear, and gently took the paper from you. "I'll file it right now so you know we took care of it, okay? Will you stay and watch?"

You nodded enthusiastically, glad that the women in your life were taking this seriously. Ms. Jeong quickly filed the restraining order and gave you another sympathetic smile.

"You come here if you need anything, okay?" She said.

"I will, Ms. Jeong. Thank you."

You waved to her as you left, finding Ryujin waiting for you outside the office doors. She smiled, and since the hallway was empty, she slipped her hand into yours for a moment.

"Got it taken care of?" She asked.

"Yeah," you sighed, relieved. "It feels good to be away from him, but I do think I owe him an apology."

"You? Owe him an apology?" Ryujin questioned.

"Well, I wasn't very honest with him about my feelings and I should have been from the moment I realized I wasn't into him," you told her. "And I did cheat on him, which I shouldn't have done, and I need to apologize for that."

Ryujin squeezed your hand. "Can I be there when you do?"

"Yes, please," you chuckled slightly. "I need you there more than anything."

Later that day, you and Ryujin were sitting on the couch, your dad pacing across the room. You just texted Chiwoo, asking to meet up despite the restraining order. "It will just be a second." You told him. As long as the two of you didn't get too close, you could say what you wanted to say and it would be done.

"Iseul, I have to leave soon and I don't feel comfortable being gone and him being here." Your dad said.

"We can handle it," you told him. "I have Ryujin here."

He sighed and nodded slowly. "I'm calling Ms. Moon, okay? She's right across the street and she can keep an eye out."

"That's fine. Chiwoo and I will talk outside anyway, so she'll be able to see us."

Your dad kissed you on the forehead before hesitantly leaving the house to go to work. You sighed when he shut the door and turned to Ryujin.

"I'm nervous."

"Me too," she confessed. "but we'll be together."

You nodded and paced a little before hearing a car horn outside. You looked at Ryujin before opening the door and walking out. She stood in the doorway like you asked her to, while you stepped out into the yard.

"You should have done this before you filed a restraining order. It would have been easier." Chiwoo shouted, keeping his distance.

You ignored his statement. "I wanted to apologize for not being honest about my feelings and leading you on for so long. I've known I like girls for a while now, I just didn't know how to bring it up to you. I also should have broken up with you before kissing Ryujin - that was unfair. Now you owe me an apology, Chiwoo."

"I owe you an apology?" He laughed, finally getting a bit closer. "Seriously?"

"You beat me, Chiwoo. There's no excuse for what you did."

"You dumb bitch! Both of you."

And then he was running toward you.

"Ryu, get in the house!"

"Not without you," she yelled. "Come on!"

But Chiwoo already had your hair in his hand and he was pulling you to the ground. You heard a door across the street slam, and Ryujin was pulling on Chiwoo to get him away from you. He turned around and hit her, making her fall back and hold her mouth. You got up and Chiwoo smirked at you.

"Big and bad now? Are you mad that I hit your little girlfriend?"

You walked around him to kneel next to Ryujin, and before he could grab you again, Ms. Moon and a few other neighbors were holding Chiwoo down. The sound of police sirens seemed to echo throughout the neighborhood as you looked at Ryujin's busted lip. You got her to sit up and the two of you watched as Chiwoo was cuffed and thrown into the back of a police car. You and Ryujin were questioned, the police cleaned both of you up, and Ms. Moon urged both of you to get back into the house where it was safe.

The two of you plopped down onto your couch and you took a big breath of relief. "I said my peace, at least. I'm sorry you got hurt."

"It's not your fault, Iseul. I'm just glad we can be together without him in the way now."

You smiled. "Me too."

You leaned over and gently cupped her jaw, kissing her sweetly.

"Now we just have to worry about everyone who will hate us being together." You said.

Ryujin shrugged. "If they hate two lesbians then they have bigger things to worry about than us dating."

"I haven't even asked you yet," You chuckled. "You'll be my girlfriend, won't you?"

"It took you long enough to ask," she smiled and kissed you again. "Of course, I'll be your girlfriend."
