Missing
After a night of well-deserved rest at the rendezvous point, Kosu's team began their journey towards the exit portal. The glow of dawn filtered through the trees, illuminating the path ahead and lifting their spirits. With the breeding machine turned off and the destruction of the dungeon core, the number of goblins had dropped dramatically. They moved with a newfound ease, the tension of the previous days lifting as they navigated the familiar terrain.
As they approached the portal, a sense of relief washed over them. The air felt lighter, and the creeping dread that had accompanied them through the dungeon seemed to dissipate. Kosu exchanged glances with his team, each member sharing a silent acknowledgment of their survival against the odds.
Stepping through together, they found themselves back in the lowest floor of the Blackmines. The dampness of the stone walls and the echo of their footsteps were reminders of the countless hours they had spent navigating its depths.
"Feels like just yesterday we were scrounging for every piece of loot," Kara, the mage, said with a wistful smile. "Remember the chaos in that last chamber?"
Thrain, the warrior, chuckled. "How could I forget? You nearly blasted us all with that fireball when you lost control!"
"Hey, that was one time!" Kara retorted, a playful glare in her eyes. "Besides, it was a necessary distraction."
Kosu smiled at their banter, feeling a sense of camaraderie swell within the group. "We've come a long way since then. We made it through the worst of it together."
Elara, their vigilant scout, suddenly raised her hand, signaling for the team to halt. "Wait. There are fresh tracks here."
The lighthearted mood shifted as they gathered around her, tension rising. "What do you see?" Kosu asked, his voice steady but alert.
"There are at least two groups that have passed through recently. They didn't leave together," Elara said, her brow furrowed in concentration.
Kosu frowned. "One group must be Ken and that shadow figure. But who could the other group be?"
Thorn stepped forward, his expression grave. "We need to be cautious. If there are multiple groups, we don't know what they might be planning. I've been out of communication with HQ since our devices were damaged; we need to find out what's happened."
"Agreed," Kosu replied. "But we can't lose focus. We need to get to the exit and gather information. Maybe Sakura in the surface have ideas about what this is. We need to find Sakura."
As they advanced carefully towards the exit, the air grew heavy with anticipation. When they reached the threshold, the scene that greeted them was one of utter devastation.
The once-bustling staging area was now a chaotic tangle of debris. Tables that had been used for organizing supplies lay overturned, their contents scattered across the cold stone floor. Crates meant for storing equipment were smashed open, their contents strewn about like fallen leaves in a storm. Tools glinted dully in the dim light, some bent or broken, others completely missing.
The air was thick with the acrid scent of smoke and the lingering smell of burnt wood, remnants of a fire that had clearly ravaged the area. Charred bits of parchment fluttered to the ground, the remnants of plans and communications that had once held vital information.
A large banner that had proudly displayed the emblem of their guild hung in tatters, its fabric singed and frayed, a testament to the chaos that had unfolded. Nearby, piles of debris blocked the paths leading further into the mines, as if hastily abandoned in the wake of a great upheaval.
"What happened here?" Kosu murmured, surveying the destruction. His heart sank as he realized there were no signs of their comrades, no trace of life. "Where could everyone have gone?"
Elara's expression grew serious. "And what about Sakura? She was in charge of logistics outside the mines. Is she alright?"
Kosu felt a knot tighten in his stomach. He pulled out the communication device, his hands trembling slightly as he pressed the button. "Sakura? Can you hear me?"
Silence followed, thick and oppressive. Just as he thought he would hear her familiar voice, a crackle of static broke through, but it wasn't Sakura who replied.
"Who is this?" The voice was deep and authoritative, sending chills down Kosu's spine.
Kosu's breath caught in his throat. "This is Kosu. Where is Sakura?"
"I'm with HQ," the voice continued, flat and urgent. "You need to return to the Guild immediately. We've lost contact with Sakura and the entire logistics team. They've vanished without a trace."
Panic surged through Kosu and his team as they exchanged worried glances. "What do you mean vanished?" Kosu asked, his voice rising with anxiety.
"We don't know. She did not give her usual report, and all communications have gone dark. We need you back at HQ to assess the situation and regroup," the voice replied. "Time is of the essence."
Kosu clenched his fists, determination replacing fear. "Understood. We're on our way."
Thorn's voice was steady, filled with an officer's resolve. "We can't afford to linger here. Let's move quickly and stay alert."
As they stood at the mouth of the Blackmines, the weight of uncertainty hung heavily in the air. The path ahead promised danger, but one thing was clear: they would uncover the truth, no matter what shadows lay in wait.
