Chapter 48

Violet opens her eyes, floating unconscious in spirit-form. She looks around her before the purple color around her starts to dissolve. The world materializes around her as she returns to her normal form. She landed in the world at the same time as her sister and Kuvira. They slowly descend onto the landscape around the new spirit portal, a field of purple flowers and mangled-looking reddish trees.

As they touch down, Kuvira groans and topples. Korra catches her and holds the unconscious woman in her arms.

"Is she dead?" Violet asks.

"No," Korra shakes her head.

"Damn it," Violet mutters.

When Kuvira comes to, she realizes who is holding her and lets out a panicked cry, before scrambling away, pushing Korra over. On her feet, Kuvira looks around at the new environment.

"What happened?" Kuvira asks panicked "Are we... dead?"

"No," Violet crosses her arms.

"We're in the Spirit World," Korra answers as she stands up, she raises her arms to gestures around them. "All the energy from your weapon tore open a new portal and blasted us in here."

Kuvira lowers her head and looks away "Why would you save my life, after everything I did?"

"I guess..." Korra looks away "I see a lot of myself in you."

"We are nothing alike!" Kuvira shouts angrily.

"That's where you're wrong," Violet interrupts. "My sister is fierce and determined to succeed," She turns her head towards Korra "Sometimes without thinking it through." She looks back at Kuvira "Just like you."

"...this wasn't how I wanted things to end." Kuvira falls to her knees. "If you would have all just surrendered," She straightens up a little, glaring at the Avatar. "None of this would have happened."

"If you didn't start the war in the first place, none of this would've happened," Violet states.

"Messing with the spirit vines, acting like a dictator over your people..." Korra walks towards her "you had to know what you were doing wasn't right."

"I was trying to help my people." Kuvira replies angrily. "Su turned her back on the Earth Kingdom, you both disappeared! I had to do something."

Violet slowly walks over and bends down in front of her "I think I understand now."

"You don't understand me at all!" Kuvira shouts, looking up at Violet, before her face shifts.

"Su told us how she took you in when you were younger," Korra says "It must have been so hard being an orphan."

"Don't pretend you know what it felt like!" Kuvira looks down "The Avatar and her Guardian is adored by millions! I was cast aside by my own parents like I meant nothing to them. How could I just stand by-" She began to cry "and watch the same thing happen to my nation, when it needed someone to guide it?"

"You're right, we don't know what it's like to be an orphan." Violet says, "But you're wrong too." Kuvira looks up at her as she continued "Switch, remember, I wasn't always the Guardian. A figure for people to look up to and count on like the Avatar. I was simply a replacement if anything happened to her."

Korra put a hand on Violet's shoulder as she looked down at Kuvira "I was expected to sit by as my sister always went headfirst into danger." Violet put her hand on Korra's hand "So that even if the Avatar perished, I could take her place. But I didn't want that... She's my sister after all." She smiles to Kuvira "How could I just sit by and watch my sister take on everything alone?"

Kuvira's tears continued to fall as she looked down at the ground.

"I realized it's never too late to change," Violet reaches out and places a hand on Kuvira's shoulder "As the Guardian, I would rather throw myself into the fire, each and every time. So that the Avatar would live. I believe that it's my role as the Guardian, to protect the Avatar. Not simply be her placement." She let out a chuckle "And sometimes, it's just my job to support her, no matter what. Simply just being there, is the best thing you can do sometimes."

"I'm sorry..." Kuvira cries. "I'm so sorry."

Korra hugs her sister from behind, Violet leans her head against her big sister's arms with a smile across her face. In the physical world, all sorts of spirits flew out of the portal and reappear on the rim of the crater where everyone gathered.

"The spirits have returned," Tenzin says.

Asami turns to the portal, from which Violet and Korra emerges, helping Kuvira to walk between them.

"So have they!" Asami points to them.

Kuvira's mecha suits turn to the portal as Mako quickly ran towards the girls. Korra takes the full weight of Kuvira, as Violet let go. Korra uses one of her hands to push Violet's back, before she runs off towards Mako, both having tears in their eyes.

"Mako!" Violet shouts as she jumped into his arms.

"You're alive," Mako wrapped both of his arms around her tightly, hugging her to his chest. "You're alive."

"Yeah," Violet replies with a small smile.

Korra smiles as Bolin runs up along with Asami and Tenzin.

"Korra!" Bolin shouts in excitement. "You're okay!"

Korra and Kuvira look around as the mecha suits gather around them, pointing their weapons at them.

"Release Kuvira, or we will attack!"

Mako moves Violet behind him protectively before Kuvira removes her arm from Korra's shoulder and addresses her troops.

"Stand down, this battle is over." Kuvira tells them "I owe the Avatar and Guardian my life. Their power is beyond anything I could ever hope to achieve." She looks down, and Su looks at her. "I'll accept whatever punishment the world sees fit."

The mecha suits all stand down and Kuvira is handcuffed by Lin. Violet grabs Mako's hand and he turns to her with a smile. Lin and Suyin take Kuvira away, while everyone else hugs Korra.

"Ah wait!" Violet shouts suddenly.

"Don't-" Mako sighs.

The group turns around to see Echo had jumped on top of Violet, licking her all over.

"No stop," Violet laughs "down boy."

"You're going to crush her boy," Mako chuckles as he pats Echo's side.

The rest of the group laugh as they walk over. Echo obediently got off Violet and sat like a puppy waiting for its owner. Violet got onto her feet before wrapping her arms around the dragon. Echo laid its head against her back.

"You're the best," Violet tells him "Just wait until Lord Zuko hears about what you did, he'll be so proud of you!"

Echo let out a squeak before using his head to push Violet into Mako who catches her. The two laugh as they look back at the dragon.

-

"And though the battle took a severe toll on our beloved city, out of the destruction, love did bloom!"

Violet hid a laugh before Mako nudged her. The two stood with their friends at Varrick and Zhu Li's wedding, where Bolin is marrying the couple.

"So that is why, dearest friends and family, we gather today to celebrate the wondrous, and at time inexplicable bond between Sir Varrick and the Lady Zhu Li! True love is a fickle creature. Difficult to find, nearly impossible to tame. But Varrick and Zhu Li have proven that even the longest of long shots," Varrick glances at Bolin, annoyed "can have a chance at happiness together. Now, for the vows!"

Pabu climbs on top of Bolin's shoulder with a small scroll around his neck. "Thank you, Master Pabu. Do you, Sir Iknik Blackstone Varrick of the Southern Water Tribe, Master of the High Seas, take the Lady Zhu Li Moon to be your lawfully wedded wife? Will you promise to treat her not as your assistant, but as your honored and cherished partner?"

"You're darn tootin' I do!" Varrick replies.

"And do you, Zhu Li, take Varrick, to be your lawfully wedded husband? Do you promise to care for him, in sickness and in health," Bolin looks down to note and gets a confused expression on his face. "And also scrub his callouses on a bi-weekly basis, which ... isn't really that much to ask..." He crumples the paper and looks at Varrick, annoyed. "Okay, I'm not reading all this."

"I do take Varrick." Zhu Li says lovingly "Callouses and all."

"You may now," Varrick and Zhu Li lean in close together as Bolin takes a few steps back. "Do the thing."

Varrick and Zhu Li kiss, while the crowd applauds. Mako takes Violet's hand and kisses it, to which she blushes in response. Mako chuckles before releasing her hand and puts his good arm around her. Varrick presses a button, and a bunch of fireworks is set off behind the Air Temple Island courtyard.

Later that night, the courtyard had shifted from a makeshift altar to a dance floor with tables in front of it. Tahno, Lu, Gang, the council page, and the White Falls Wolfbats provide the music. Varrick is dancing with Zhu Li, while Ikki is dancing with a reluctant Huan. Wu was dancing in the middle of people while Opal dragged Bolin onto the dance floor as well. Lin takes some food from a waiter, while Pema chases Rohan.

Korra, Violet, and Mako all sat together at a table, amusingly watching everyone. Korra was sitting across from the two, while Mako and Violet's chairs were together, Violet leaning against Mako's chest with his good arm wrapped around her shoulders.

"I'm sorry the two of you can't dance together," Korra turns to the couple, gesturing to Mako's arm that was in a sling. "How's the arm?"

"It's much better," Mako replies. "Honestly, didn't even notice it was broken till everything had settled down."

"That was the adrenalin talking dear," Violet comments.

"The words thank you, don't feel big enough for what you did." Kora says, "But I honestly don't know what else to say."

"You don't need to say anything." Mako shakes his head "I want you to know, I'll follow you two into battle, no matter how crazy things get." He squeezes Violet "I've got your guys back" He smiles "...and I always will."

"That means a lot," Korra smiles before looking serious "But you better take care of my little sister mister."

"Korra," Violet looks annoyed.

"Don't worry, I will," Mako chuckles before kissing Violet's forehead. "Always."

Violet blushes before grumbling something, Korra laughs in response. Opal runs over to the table.

"Hey, come on you two!" Opal tugs on Violet's arm "Zhu Li's gonna throw her bouquet."

"Wha-" Violet looks at Mako.

"Come on," Opal drags Violet with her "Come on Korra!"

"Coming coming," Korra laughs as she follows the two.

Mako shakes his head with a smile as the girls ran off. Korra stood with Violet as the other girls gathered in front of them.

"What's the point of this again?" Violet questions.

"Well, it's-" Korra was cut off when Zhu Li threw her bouquet back.

Violet turned her head as the bouquet smacked her in the face and fell into her hands. Korra laughs as Violet just looked confused.

"Ow," Violet wines as she rubbed her nose with one hand.

"Violet, you got it!" Opal says excitedly as she grabs Violet's arm.

"Uh yeah," Violet says confused. "More like it smacked me in the face."

"Ohhhhhh Mako!" Bolin shouts to his brother. "Looks like you're getting married next!"

Mako looks up from the table with a blush as Violet turned bright red.

"W-What?!" Violet asks.

"Yeah, the purpose of the bouquet toss is to throw to unmarried women," Korra explains hiding a laugh. "Whoever catches it is said to be the next in line to be wed, it's for good luck."

"Heh?!" Violet looks down at the bouquet.

Opal and Korra both laugh before hugging the confused and clearly flustered girl. Bolin was teasing Mako at the table, who looked as equally flustered as his girlfriend. The two locked eyes across the room before blushing even harder and looked away embarrassed.

After the excitement had died down a bit, everyone went back to the party. Violet walked back over to the table where she put the bouquet on the table.

"It smacked me in the face," Violet whines as she sat down beside Mako.

"You shouldn't have been so distracted dummy," Mako teases as he rubs her nose. "Does it hurt?"

"No, it was flowers," Violet responds. "I'm just dramatic."

"I know," Mako chuckles.

Violet looks around to see her sister had disappeared. Mako stood up from the table and held his hand out to her.

"You wanna dance?" Mako asks "I'm bored just sitting here."

"What about your hurt arm?" Violet questions as she reaches up and takes his hand.

"I'm fine to dance," Mako says. "It'll be healed in no time."

"If you say so," Violet smiles happily.

The two went out to floor together, where Bolin and Opal were dancing together. The party went on for hours, it was finally a time for everyone to relax and just enjoy themselves. Even Echo was at the party, he was sitting beside the food table, watching everyone all night. Pabu was sitting on top of his head, chirping happily to the music.

The next day, Mako and Violet stood beside Echo in front of Asami and Korra as they were about to set off together. The two girls were taking a vacation to the spirit world together.

"Just remember to come find me if anything happens," Korra tells her sister. "Seriously, you know how to find me."

"I know," Violet laughs as she takes her sister's hand. "Just enjoy yourself sissy, you deserve it."

Korra hugs her sister "You're the best."

"I know," Violet replies smugly before hugging her sister. "Be careful."

"Always," Korra responds before turning to Mako. "You better watch over her, you know how reckless she's gotten."

"Don't worry," Mako raises his good hand. "I swear, no recklessness."

"He's lying," Asami mutters.

"Mhm," Korra agrees.

"Just go you two," Violet pushes her sister. "Everything will be fine here."

"Alright," Asami laughs.

Mako and Violet wave to the two as they set off towards the spirit portal holding hands. Korra stops right before the portal and turns back to the two.

"Don't forget to invite me to the wedding!" Korra calls out to them.

"Get out of here sissy!" Violet shouts as a blush spreads across her face.

Korra laughs as Asami pulls her into the spirit portal. Once they were gone, Mako takes Violet's hand, and they turn back to the destroyed city. Echo stands up and walks with the two down the street.

"So, what now?" Violet asks. "Should we go on a vacation of our own?"

"I don't know," Mako replies "I'll go where you go."

"What do you think Echo?" Violet asks, turning to her dragon with his newly healed wings.

Echo looks excited as he unfolds his wings. Mako chuckles and pats the dragon on the back.

"Think you can carry two people buddy?" Mako questions.

Echo jumps up and down, shaking the ground.

"Okay okay," Violet says with a laugh "Easy buddy."

Mako helps Violet onto Echo's back before climbing on behind her. The two look back at the city before Violet rubs Echo.

"Won't you miss this place?" Violet asks, turning back to Mako. "It's your home after all."

"It's not like we'll be gone forever," Mako replies as he wraps his arms around her, resting his head on her shoulder. "Besides, after everything that's happened. I think your sister has the right idea; I really could use some alone time with you."

"Alright then," Violet pats Echoes head twice.

Echo unfolds his wings and takes into the sky, Mako holds onto Violet tightly as they soared over the city.

"You know, I always wanted to visit the fire nation," Mako tells her.

"Fire nation it is then," Violet replies happily. "Lord Zuko would be happy to see you again."

"I'll be honored," Mako says as he put his hand over hers.

"I love you Mako," Violet turns to look at him.

"I love you too," Mako smiles. "I truly think, this is just the beginning."

The two kiss and Echo roars happily, the two laugh at the dragon before Violet turns back to Mako.

"I guess Gurdian's really do have a taste," Violet chuckles.

"Well, I couldn't be happier that you have a thing for hot headed fire benders," Mako says.

"Me too," Violet replies as she lays her head against his chest. "I'm really happy, I was born as the guardian." She looks out at the sky before her "The world is changing each and every day," She let out a laugh "I can't wait to see what we do next!"

The End.
