Prologue

I didn't understand what exactly happened but what I understood was that something inside my head SCREAMED for me to run.
To get my shit together and run as fast and as far as my legs would carry me.
No matter the cost.
But I just stood there, legs motionless, eyes focused on the figure infront of me.
No matter how hard I tried, there just wouldn't come even a single rational thought to me.
A reason as to WHY this... this thing infront of me was this gigantic.
There really was no other word to describe it.

Now, here I was. Going through all of my life choices to detect the mishap which brought me to this exact moment. I mean, I could say it was my idiotic idea to... I don't know... wander into the night to see if I could find the clearing I dreamt of for two weeks ongoing?
My plan had multiple issues, the biggest one probably being: Me, going into the woods- in the middle of the night; alone.
I swear, I'm not usually this dumb.
On second thought, I really don't know what had gotten into me.

Letting aside that I can't even recall the moment I decided to go. It's like... I blacked out and woke up standing in the middle of the forest behind our house.
Then again... I let my eyes wander. Taking in every detail I could, hoping I'd survive my supervision.

The trees created an almost perfect circle around me. It was identical to the clearing I dreamt of, even the moon - a full moon surprise, surprise - hovered above the trees, behind that creature, at the exact same position.
Perfectly in the middle of the tree circle.
Calming me, even though I was about to die by the claws- or fangs- or both - and whatever else that creature lurking in the shadows possessed to kill me.
My eyes returned to the shadow infront of me.
The thing didn't move an inch, it just continued to tower between the trees, in the security of the shadows.
It's glowing, red eyes glued to me.
But it didn't attack.

Why?

I couldn't comprehend why it didn't attack, why it wouldn't rip me to shreds already.
Was it a game?
Did it want me crying and begging in fear?
Or -maybe the most idiotic though I would probably ever have- does it perhaps not want to kill me?
The second I formed that thought the shadows moved.
The thing moved.
Stepped outside the shadows, into the light of the moon.
The thing, as I called it, turned out to be the biggest wolf I've ever seen. With furr as pitch black as the shadows and paws as big as my head.
Was it awe? Shock? A death wish?
Maybe a mix of every emotion anyone could feel, that made me take a step towards it.
And when it didn't even move a muscle, I decided to take another step.

And another.

And another.

And another.

Until I was just one step away from it.
If I'd reach out my hand, I could probably touch its nose. My hand twitched and I pondered, the wolf seemed to notice my movement because his eyes narrowed.

But it didn't move, not even as I rose my hand to touch its nose.
