Are There African Werewolves?

In African folklore, there are stories about people who can turn into animals, similar to werewolves, but they often differ from European tales. One example is the "werehyena," found in East and North Africa, where it's believed that witches or sorcerers can transform into hyenas. These werehyenas are often linked to grave robbing and other sinister activities. In Ethiopia, the "Bouda" or "Buda" is a similar concept, referring to someone who can change into a hyena. These beliefs are also found among the Berber people in North Africa.

In West African folklore, the idea of shapeshifting is also present, but not exactly like European werewolves. For instance, among the Yoruba people of Nigeria, there's a belief in "Aja," witches who can turn into various animals to perform magic. Additionally, the "Leopard Man" is a figure in several West African cultures where secret society members can transform into leopards. These stories highlight the rich and diverse traditions of African myths about human-animal transformations.
