chapter 5 regret

Kaden Nadire tossed and turned in his sleep. He was aware he was dreaming when corpses appeared in the blackness.

The Nadire felt anguish and guilt as large insects crawled over their mangled bodies.

Well well well. You've manage to become a Divine Knight. Said the corpses in unison.

Kaden didn't respond.

Go away. He finally said.

How's Rygilya?

I said go away.

The corpses laughed.  You think becoming a Divine Knight changes anything? You're still a failure.

The memory of Kaden running off with Rygilya played across the blackness. He saw how the mana absorbing insects dug their teeth into the civilian captured by the ogres. They were tearing chunks of flesh.

They had already been through so much and Kaden left them to die.

Kaden wailed and fell to his knees.

You aren't fit to be a Knight let a alone a Divine.

Kaden didn't want to listen to the phantom. He didn't want to believe he wasn't worthy of his new title. Yet the guilt that racked him made him second guess himself.

"Kaden!" He heard someone through his dream.

His eyes flew up. He sat up and looked at Ahmeal. She looked at him with concern. Reaching up, the queen wiped the tears that rolled down his cheek.

"Hey, its okay." Said Ahmeal softly.

"Is it really?" Kaden felt uncertain.

"You saved your friend. You did good."

"Rygilya is a villain." The Knight rubbed his fingers through his curly brown hair. "He's wanted dead or alive. Instead of saving the innocent I rescued him and left them to die."

Ahmeal stayed silent.

"You can't change the past. All you can do is make a better future." She finally said. "Get dressed. The others are waiting for us."

Kaden nodded. After getting himself together, he ate.

"This is really good." He took another bit of sausage.

Ahmeal giggled. "Thank you."

"I'm still surprised you can cook so well. With you being a queen and all I didnt expect you to have time to learn."

"I picked up a lot of skills in my time as a Knight. If you keep being a Knight then so will you."

Kaden nodded. His woman was still trying to cheer him up. He was grateful for her being here.

It was later when Kaden finished training with Kariah-Belle, Iris and Sir Van.

"Well fought you two." Iris told them.

"Even with our new powers we can't push you to your max." Said Kariah. She was on her back breathing heavily.

Sir Van spoke. "Youre still new to your powers. With more experience I'm sure you'll give us a run for our money."

Kaden was delighted to get praise from one of the Seven Swords of Justice.

After a shower, Kaden met with Monty.

"So what are we going to do about Kariah?" The Drakon asked.

"I don't know." Kaden answered. "She's set on sacrificing herself. Once her mind's made up there is no changing it."

"Trust me I know." Monty nodded. "We can't let her go through with it.

"Agreed but I have no idea how to talk her out of it."

"Speaking of Kariah-Belle, there she is right there." Pointed Monty.

"Hey Monty, big bro." The curly haired woman bounced slightly as she made her way over. Akio and Ahrulius were behind her. "Where's Ahmeal?"

"She's in a meeting." Kaden responded.

"She seems really busy lately."

"Yeah, the kings and queens of the four nations are busy preparing for new capitals. I'm glad I don't have to do all that political stuff. Looks like a chore."

"Facts." Added Monty.

"You'd be perfect for it." Kaden said softly.

The group was silent until Kariah spoke. "I know what you're doing Kay. I told you this is something I have to do."

"Yeah but why you?" Kaden said stubbornly. He had felt so much joy when he found out Kariah was his sister little over a month ago. He didnt want to be alone again. He didnt want to be the last Nadire.

Kariah-Belle smiled. "I was given the chance to protect you. Not just you but Akio, Aya and everyone else I love. I'm going to take it."

Kaden didnt speak. He only sighed in defeat. "Have it your way."

"Good because I will."

Kaden rolled his eyes as he smiled. He'd dearly miss his sister's smart mouth.

The sun had gone down now. Kaden was surrounded by other Knights.

"Word is you dealt a heavy blow to the Darkness." Said Vade impressed. "How'd you manage that one?"

"It was a tough one." Kaden closed his eyes nodding as he remembered his encounter with the Primordial. "Almost didn't make it out alive. It wouldn't have been possible if I didn't have help."

"You had help?" Asked Himoria. "That wasn't in the report. Who was it?"

Kaden hesitated. He looked to A'zaiah and A'liyah Bloodmoon. "Rygilya."

Tori inhaled deeply. Vade made a face.

A'zaiah glared at him narrowing her eyes. Everyone knew A'zaiah held nothing but disdain for the Darkness Tamed after he killed their master. A'liyah didn't care for him but she didn't have the resentment her sister held.

"That's right." Began Himoria. "The report mentioned Rygilya fought to protect you while you were going berserk."

It wasn't a big secret that Darqus would occasionally go out of control anymore. Once you become a Divine Knight you get access to top secret information.

"Yeah, he did or so I heard."

"I wonder why?" Questioned Himoria.

"They're probably in cahoots." Spoke A'zaiah.

"Don't say that, Zi." A'liyah told her. "You know Kaden would only ally himself with someone like Rygilya if the situation called for it."

A'zaiah only huffed.

"Is it true? Is your sister really going through with it?" Kaynè spoke.

Kaden's heart felt like it would break.

"Yes." He responded.

"Damn dude. That's rough." Said Vade.

"You're telling me. She won't listen to reason. She's convinced this is the best way to save us all."

Everyone fell silent.

"She's brave." A'zaiah said.

Kaden agreed.

Just then a woman walked up to the group of Knights.

A Vympiri.

This Vympiri had yet to reach full maturity. She still had skin as white as snow.

"Hello," she said with a bright smile. "Kaden Nadire, A'zaiah Bloodmoom, Vade Evers, Kyanè Laviel, Himoria. You have been summoned by your superiors. If you'll follow me please.

The group followed the Vympiri. Kaden had to admit he was still a little freaked out being so close to Vympiri.

"So you're the one who took down Dracula." She asked him.

Kaden hesitated.

"Don't worry. I'm not one of his sympathizers. I say good riddance. He left the Vympiri race divided and the Galactic Order weakened with his treacherous action. you did well."

"Uh thanks," Kaden said awkwardly.

This is too freaky. He thought.

They finally reached their destination. When they entered the room Sir Van and master Iris beamed at them.

Kariah-Belle was bouncing excitedly. Aya too seemed to be in an extremely good mood. Akio only watched them as they entered. Monty nodded.

"What's going on?" Asked Himoria.

"We've got some thrilling news." Iris told them. "You'll be going on a mission to on another planet!"

"Huh?" Said Vade. "Already?"

Van nodded. "The Galactic Order wants to see what their new Divine Knights are capable off."

"Alright!" Exclaimed Kyanè "I am so down!"

"Facts." Said Monty.

"You will be looking for a powerful assassin by the name of Chako Vernis. He works under the criminal organization, Crow. You're tasked with bringing him in dead or alive. Got that?"

"Ma'am!" They all said in unison.

"Good. Team Olympus, move out!"
