THREE | INTERVENING STILES FOR THE WIN
chapter three - intervening stiles for the win
Scott McCall showed up to work with little on his mind besides the fact that his senior year was starting in a couple of days. And then he saw his best friends jeep in the parking lot, and new more Stilinski-Schemeing was going down, which meant Scott was in for it today. Ever since Stiles revealed he had an apparent 'Ten Step Plan' for Scott and Juliet, he'd been coming by rather frequently to gather intel and try to convince Scott that Juliet was perfect for him.
Having been working with Juliet for a couple of weeks now, Scott knew it was impossible to refute the fact that Juliet Knight was perfect, because she really was. And in not in a superficial way, either. She was so pure and kind and innocent and everything that Scott shouldn't be around. Every reason that made her perfect was a reason that Scott couldn't be with her, because he would surely mess that up.
Juliet Knight was a shining star lighting up a pitch black sky with ease, and Scott McCall didn't dare snuff out her light. The girl was possibly that last free and good spirit in Beacon Hills, and the young werewolf didn't want to see his troubles tear that away from her.
Although, thanks to Stiles, Scott had begun picking up on things that made the girl completely and utterly beautiful both inside and out. Stiles hadn't been lying when he fairly dramatically declared Juliet Knight a being made up of sunshine and flowers, and that fact about her absolutely charmed Scott. He hated it, but Stiles had opened his eyes to girl he didn't want to want because he was so sure he didn't deserve her. And even more importantly, she didn't deserve to be dragged into the dark side of Beacon Hills that she would surely be intertwined with if she and Scott got close.
Scott was going to have to seriously destroy Stiles in a game of Call of Duty to make him pay for the way Scott's heart now fluttered as he walked into the animal clinic and heard Juliet's laugh. It just wasn't fair.
As Scott entered the animal clinic today, he saw Juliet gently grooming a Siamese cat as she laughed at one of Stiles' stories. He felt a twang of jealousy bubble up in his newly blossoming feelings, not because he was jealous that someone else was making her laugh, but because he hadn't gotten there sooner to be able to enjoy her laughter in it's entirety.
Juliet then looked up at Scott with a look so kind that Scott found himself wishing more then anything that he wasn't a werewolf, but just a boy who could pursue such a girl and see if anything could be between them without worrying that he'd be her downfall. He'd seen it happened once, he'd already destroyed the life of one amazing girl. Scott wouldn't be able to live with himself if he did it again. What kind of selfish monster would he be if he was the reason Juliet's glowing smile was to ever falter?
"Scotty boy," Stiles greeted when he noticed his best friend walk in. Scott blinked quickly, brushing back all thoughts of not only his tortured past but also doomed future love life, and instead nodded towards the other boy.
"Morning, Scott!" Juliet was absolutely beaming. No, she wasn't just smiling brightly, but she was practically sending off sun-rays as if she was some goddess.
And how unfair and completely understandable would it be if she was one. Completely understandable, and yet making her even more heartbreakingly unattainable to the McCall boy. Not that she was a prize that he wanted to attain, one of the best parts about her was the fact that she seemed absolutely free, she was everything Scott tried to be but always feel short of.
"Morning," Scott murmured, hoping he sounded tired and not upset at the world. He knew that Juliet was too sweet to let Scott's pain go by without trying to fix it if she picked up on it. He was also pretty sure that if she asked, it would be nearly impossible not to tell her everything on his mind. Her presence just made him feel oddly safe, which wasn't something he was used to feeling.
"So, Scott," Stiles began. His tone was so clearly one that he used when he was meddling. Scott wasn't the least bit surprised. "I was just telling her about Senior night, she should definitely come with us, right?"
Juliet's bright blue eyes shimmered over to Scott's direction and even across the room he was able to pick out the galactic golden specks that gave her eyes their otherworldly glow. The universe was really trying to make Scott suffer as he noticed more and more incredible things about the girl. Wasn't there some Greek tragedy about a guy who's deepest desire was just out of reach? Yeah, Scott had a pretty good idea how that guy must've felt.
"Would that be okay?" Juliet adjusted her glasses nervously, as if it was even possible for Scott to tell her no. "I mean, I'd love to finally be able to meet Stiles' girlfriend and these other friends I keep hearing about, unless that's like way to invasive?"
"No, no it's totally not. You should definitely do it with me. I mean us. I mean like, do Senior Night with us," Scott answered a little to awkwardly, and Stiles sure as hell noticed.
Juliet smiled once again, and Stiles noted with glee that Scott couldn't take his eyes off of her as she did so. Apparently being a meddling kid did have it's perks after all.
Then, Juliet bit her lip, as if realizing something, and her smile flickered ever so slightly. "Well, actually," Juliet started off slowly, looking back and forth between Scott and Stiles. "I'm not entirely sure I'll be able to make it, though. My dads been out of town dealing with some divorce-stuff with his latest ex-wife, and I kind of haven't been able to finish unpacking. I don't really want to start the school year off with a bunch of boxes lying around my house and constantly not knowing where stuff is, you know."
Stiles instantly clapped his hands together. "Well, I've got an easy fix for that!"
Juliet looked just a little unsure of the Stilinski's declaration. She catches on quickly, thought Scott to himself.
"And what would that be?" Scott was the one to ask. He, too, felt a little nervous.
"Me and you buddy," Stiles shot a wink over at his best friend. He then looked back over at Juliet. "I don't know if you've noticed but Scott's got some pretty impressive biceps, Juliet. Moving around big bulky boxes is no problam-o for mister lacrosse captain over here, alright? And as for me? Well, I am a great box-mover-supervisor. I mean honestly, I could go pro if I really wanted to."
With a bit of blush coating her cheeks, Juliet looked over at Scott and laughed. Maybe he just wanted to think it, but he was sure her eyes lingered for a second before they directed their attention back to the spectacle that was Stiles Stilinski.
"Are you sure?" She asked. "You guys really don't have to do that."
"Yes, we do," Stiles nodded. "I've told our friends so much about you and they would be absolutely ruined if you didn't make it to senior night, wouldn't they, Scott?"
Scott narrowed his eyes at Stiles, but then he saw Juliet looking at him expectantly and the next thing he knew he was saying, "Yeah, yeah I'd love to help you unpack."
Juliet gave him a grateful smile, and Scott couldn't help but clumsily grinned back at her.
Stiles got up from his seat, content with how he got the ball rolling for the day. Judging by the way Scott caved in when it came to things involving Juliet, and the way her eyes lit up even more when her smile was directed at him, Stiles was going to have the two of them together in no time. Honestly, he could make a living out of match-making.
"Okay, so the game plan is me and Scott swing around your place about six tonight, maybe?" Stiles asked as he walked backwards towards the door. Juliet nodded at him. Stiles sent Scott a mischievous grin, and Scott knew his best friend was already planning something.
Apparently done with trying to further his mysterious ten step plan for now, Stiles waved at the two before heading outside to his jeep. Scott, who was trying to plot some plans on how he was going to get Stiles back for this, stuffed him hands into his pockets as he watched Juliet coo at the cat in her lap. The werewolf sighed at the sight in front of him, knowing that he was so incredibly screwed because Juliet Knight was stealing pieces of his heart with every passing moment and no matter how much he denied it, he was really falling for the girl.
Luckily, she didn't seem to notice the effect she had on him, and no matter what Stiles said about it, he was going to keep it that way.
The day had past by as most did. Juliet and Scott spent time together bonding over their love for animals, nothing too intense coming in through their doors, and Deaton gave them a few chores to do around the office. Nothing odd or supernatural, just another perfectly normal day in Beacon Hills, which was hard to think even existed anymore.
Now, Juliet Knight sat at in the kitchen of her grandfather's home that was supposed to be hers, but still didn't really feel like it. She also still has having trouble remembering the address of their latest home, which had led to a slightly awkward conversation with the pizza delivery man she had just gotten off the phone with. The clock read five forty-five, meaning Scott and Stiles should be showing up fairly soon. She was thankful for the two boys for a multitude of reasons, them coming by to help her finally finish unpacking being just a few of them. They'd both been incredibly friendly to her, making the move to Beacon Hills easier then any move she'd had so far. Even with her dad traveling, she felt her self easing into a comfortable life in the new town.
Juliet obviously missed her old life, but it wasn't the first time her father had completely uprooted her life. He needed change every so often, and Juliet loved the man too much to put up a protest anymore. Plus, with what had happened to her grandfather, this move was justified more then most. She was just glad that this time she wasn't moving in with a new wife of his, she preferred it being just her and her father.
For the hundredth time, she wondered how long it would be just her and her father. All she knew about her grandfather, who she honestly had no memories of, was that he was sick and was in a senior home to be taken care of. She had no idea if that was a permanent fix for the man, or if he would be coming back home soon. Juliet didn't even know if she could go visit him, but that was mostly because her father hadn't been around much to answer any questions. So for the time being, Juliet was fairly alone in their impressively large home until either he dad returned home or, maybe, her grandfather came home and demanded to know why the hell she was there.
However, Juliet knew she wasn't entirely alone. Stiles had told her multiple times that he was taking her under his wing this school year, making sure she made the most out of coming back to her home town. In his words, senior year was not going to be a bust for her. She already knew she was going to make a great friend out of Stiles, who had promised to introduce her to all of his great friends, too.
And then there was Scott McCall. After working with him for the better half of the summer, Juliet had grown to take a liking to him. And sometimes he'd look at her while they worked together, and she thought maybe something could be there.
But Scott never acted on anything, and Juliet decided she wasn't going to do anything either. Yes, he was incredibly cute and his compassion for animals was beyond attractive, but she'd started working at the animal clinic to further her veterinary career, not to find a boyfriend. She was perfectly happy with how things were going as is, anyways. Who was she to ask for anything more?
A knock on the front door caused Juliet to jump, and she realized one of the boys must've arrived. She hurried to the door, unlocking and opening it only to see the very boy she'd just been thinking about, motorcycle helmet under his arm and his charming puppy-dog smile on his face. As per usual, Juliet didn't hesitate to smile back at him.
"Scott, hey. Oh, come in!" Juliet quickly opened the door and moved to get out of the way. Smiling at the excited girl, Scott made his way into her home.
"So I guess Stiles isn't here yet," Scott noted as Juliet closed the front door.
He realized the house seemed rather home-y already with pictures and other touches scattered around the rather big house. However, they all seemed rather dusty. This struck Scott as odd, seeing as Juliet had only just moved in, the boxes scattered in every room was proof of that. He wanted to question it, but he was completely thrown from his train of thought when Juliet touched his arm.
"Come this way, I want to show you something," She said as she tugged on his arm gently, completely unaware that she was managing to tug on his weary heart strings, too.
Her hand left Scott's bicep, and a small part of him wanted to protest. Instead, he pushed away the silly feeling and continued to follow Juliet towards the back of the house. The girl looked over her shoulder at him, smiling kindly because that was pretty much the only way she could smile, and soon Scott was so wrapped up thinking about her smile that he didn't even think where she could possibly be leading him. Next thing he knew, he was on a back porch over looking some of Beacon Hills from a high hilltop.
Scott hadn't even realized how high her house was above the rest of the town until he stood there looking over houses and stores that seemed so much smaller then they actually were. He didn't really know where the thought came from, but Scott found himself thinking this must've been how people felt in their castles as they looked down on their kingdoms. "Wow," was all he could say.
"Insane, isn't it?" Juliet sighed, leaning against a wooden beam as she, too, gazed over the town. "I honestly have no idea why my dad would want to move away from this, but I'm glad my grandfather stuck around."
Gears turned in Scott's head, and suddenly the old family photos made sense. "Oh, so this is your grandfather's house?"
"Yeah, this is actually the house my dad grew up in," Juliet explained with a nod. She finally looked away from the view in front of them and over to Scott.
"Did your grandfather... um... you know?" Scott felt bad for asking the question as soon as it left his mouth. If he could've taken it back, he would've, but it was too late to do that now. So instead, he waited for Juliet's answer and prayed he hadn't just pried too much.
"Oh, no. He's fine. I think," Juliet's expression got a little cloudy, and Scott had the feeling she was more confused then he was about the situation. "My dad said he's really sick, so he's in a home being taken care of. We came back to help take care of his things. I think my dad is trying to figure out whether or not he can finally sell this place or not."
Scott felt his heart fall at the thought of Juliet only passing through Beacon Hills temporarily. It's for the best, he told himself. Trying not to have his emotions be too obvious in his expression, he turned to look back over the town.
"Hey, Scott? Thanks a lot for doing this," Juliet said suddenly. "I mean, helping me unpack and all. It's a task I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy."
Scott was slightly shocked by the sincerity in her voice, and suddenly he realized how big this house was for a teenage girl to live here all alone. Of course her dad was supposed to be living with her, but right now she was all alone in a semi-new town. Knowing of all the things that had gone done in Beacon Hills, Scott suddenly hated the fact that Juliet had been all alone in such a secluded part of town.
"You don't have to thank me," Scott softly assured her. His brown eyes softened as he returned her candor. "What ever you need while you're here, me and Stiles got you, okay?"
Juliet's soft gaze towards the boy broke into a smile, but before she could say anything else, her phone buzzed. Pulling it out of her pocket, she read the message she had just received and for the first time ever, Scott saw the girl frown.
"Oh no," She groaned. Looking disappointed, she raised her eyes from her screen to look at Scott. "I just got a text from Stiles, it looks like his Jeep broke down again and he can't make it. Well, that kind of sucks."
Upon hearing this, Scott's suspicions began to rise. He knew Stiles' old jeep had ninety-nine problems, but getting it to somehow start normally wasn't one. Stiles had about a million tircks up his sleeve when it came to the jeep. How convenient that the night he ran out of those tricks was on the same night he was supposed to join Scott in helping Juliet unpack all her moving boxes.
Scott pulled out his phone to send his friend text, only to see his phone already buzzing from an incoming message from Stiles. He opened it to see what Stiles was explanation Stiles had this time.

Refraining himself from sending a crude text back, Scott frowned and shoved his phone back into his pocket. How had he not seen this coming before? It was such a predictable Stiles move, it actually pained Scott to think he hadn't figured out Stiles' plan sooner.
"Stiles text you, too?" Juliet guessed.
Scott sighed, knowing he was here alone with Juliet for better or worse now. "Yeah, looks like it's just the two of us after all. Where would you like to get started?"
