ONE | A KNIGHT TO REMEMBER

CHAPTER ONE - A KNIGHT TO REMEMBER

According to her father, Beacon Hills was really Juliet's home. She had been born in the small town and lived there for almost two full years before moving, so really coming back was just her returning to the place she was from. At least, that's how he chose to justify uprooting her entire life and making the girl move shortly after her junior year of high school ended.

Juliet knew she couldn't actually be upset with her father, however. A few months prior, he had gotten a call saying his father, Juliet's grandfather, had some sort of breakdown that had greatly affected his already deteriorating health. Upon hearing the news, her father had decided that he needed to move his father into a senior home somewhere in town. And, of course, he had also decided that they needed to come back home to be closer to his father while also taking care of their apparently generations-old estate.

In Juliet's opinion, though, when she stood in her new and empty room, she felt farther away from home then ever.

However, the young woman was not going to let that hold her back from living her life. Sure, she would've been a lot happier back home with all of her friends, but she could find something to make the best out of this major life change. And that something was a new job at the local animal clinic.

At the end of last school year, Juliet had begun looking into things to do with her future, and the one thing that had really caught her eye was helping animals. Of course, what Juliet strived for was to work with something more exotic and full of adventure, like working at an arctic animal rehabilitation center, or becoming a marine biologist, or even being an activist to preserving animal life, but, for the time being, beggars couldn't be choosers. If the animal clinic was the most exotic thing the town of Beacon Hills had to offer, then she would make it work. That was Juliet's specialty after all, finding out how to put a positive spin on anything life threw at her.

Still, Juliet couldn't help the hesitation she felt as she sat in her car in front of the Veterinarians office. A month before she had left her home in Washington state, she had landed a internship at a wildlife preserve. Juliet wasn't a pessimist in the slightest, but she began wondering what she would do if she didn't get the job. Sure, maybe it wasn't her dream job, but she still was going to need something to make this move a little easier. Juliet took a deep breathe, expelling all negative thoughts in a long sigh before getting out of her car with a smile now on her face.

A small bell rung through the seemingly empty office when Juliet entered. At first, nobody seemed to be there, but just as Juliet was about to call out, a head popped out from a back room.

"Hey," said a smiling boy about Juliet's age. "I'm just finishing up out here, so I'll be out in a minute."

"Oh, okay," Juliet nodded, but the head had already disappeared.

The girl found herself awkwardly walking to the front desk and tapping her fingers gently against the counter. A few minutes had gone pass, and still no sign of the boy. Juliet didn't really mind though, and instead found herself reaching out towards a pile of brochure's for the local animal shelter. One about how owners should bring their dogs in for blood donations caught her eye.

Naturally, as soon as she reached out, the boy from earlier reentered the room, startling Juliet just enough to knock the entire pile of brochures onto the floor.

Juliet's eyes widened as she looked up to the boy. "Oh-oh my god. I am so sorry! I'll pick them up."

The boy behind the counter didn't look the slightest bit concerned. Instead, he gave Juliet a dimpled smile so warm it actually caught her off guard, and she found herself stammering even more. And his soft brown eyes that held the same cozy warmth as his smile definitely wasn't helping her brain find actual words instead of fragments of the English language.

Before she could make herself look any more foolish, Juliet squatted down and began gathering up the scattered brochures. She was only vaguely aware of the fact that the boy had pushed open the swinging half-door to get to her. "I'm really, really, sorry," Juliet had begun to say, but when she had started talking, she had moved her head to look upwards, and accidentally knocked it into the boys jaw rather hard when he lowered himself to help her.

Juliet fell back into a sitting position on the floor, her hands covering her mouth in shock. She was truly astounded by the fact that she could make such a huge idiot out of herself in just a matter of minutes. Sure, her dad had always joked about how she was the clumsiest person her knew, but this was a new level of clumsy.

"Oh, god. I'm so-"

"-sorry, I know," The boy let out a winded laugh as he let himself sit down across from her. He face was twisted up in a look of shocked pain, but by the time he settled himself into the floor, Juliet realized he was laughing softly.

"What-what's funny?" Juliet asked worriedly. "God, did I hit you so hard that you don't even know your laughing. I cannot begin to emphasize how bad I feel. If you see a light, don't  go towards it."

"No, no, it's okay," The boy continued to laugh. He looked over to Juliet, noticing that her glasses were slightly off-centered after their collision, but choose not to mention it as to avoid putting anything else on her seemingly already very crowded plate. "Trust me, I'll heal," he assured her.

"I'm so not getting this job," Juliet groaned. Her elbows perched themselves on each knee respectively so she could angle her hands to perfectly cradle her face.

"You're the girl applying for the job?" So much excitement was in his voice that Juliet couldn't help but lift her head and look at him. The boy the cleared his voice, realizing he probably sounded a little too friendly, and tried to rephrase the sentence so he sounded a little less like a weirdo. "I mean, you're here for the interview?"

Juliet let out a soft sigh, and found herself involuntarily smiling softly at him. It was habit of hers to smile, it got her through everything life had ever thrown at her, which included three of her fathers divorces and two major moves. "Yeah, I'm Juliet Knight."

"Scott McCall," Scott stuck a hand out across the scattered brochures. "I'm kind of the vets assistant."

"Assistant?" Juliet asked after she had shook his hand. "So, tell me, if you hadn't seen me immediately make a mess of the office and then been assaulted by my head, do you think I could get the job?"

Scott smiled back at Juliet without thinking. "I saw your papers, you're totally getting the job. And as for the office being a mess, trust me, it's seen worse days."

Juliet gave Scott a soft, thankful nod. She wasn't normally one to worry so much, and she was glad her potential new coworker seemed to be so kind. Together the pair cleaned up the brochure's and placed them back on the counter. Once everything was back in it's original place, Scott kindly wished Juliet good luck before pointing her back to where she could find Deaton.

Without meaning to, Scott watched Juliet, who seemed to have an excited bounce in her step despite the nervous scent she was so obviously exuding, as she walked off to the interview. He heard Deaton greet her, and even found himself hoping his boss would give the girl the job. Not, of course, because he liked her --his life was much to complicated for having crushes-- but because she seemed like a truly good person with her heart in the right place even when she was stuttering and he could hear it racing unusually fast. Yeah, he definitely didn't like her anymore then he would anyone else that he'd talk to for five minutes.

The bell attached to the front door jangled slightly, and Scott looked up to see his best friend bursting through the door excitedly.

"Scotty boy!" Stiles exclaimed. The pale teenager walked towards his friend, quickly noticing the smile that was practically glowing on Scott's face. "Hey, what's got you all happy and smiley?"

Scott shrugged and failed at trying to hide his smile. "Oh, nothing. Just been a good day."

"Well, prepare yourself, because it's about to get even better." Excitedly, Stiles pulled out a case from under his shirt, where he had for some reason thought it would be a good idea to hide it so he could surprise Scott. "Guess who scored the latest and greatest zombie apocalypse video game! You better be getting off early tonight because, my friend, this beautiful summer night is going to consist of some very intense gaming."

"I'm impressed," Scott admitted, his smile now a crooked grin. "And lucky for you, I get off in an hour."

"Good, 'cause I've already told Malia and the others not to worry if they don't hear from us for hours on end, 'cause we're going to be occupied in something very important."

"You told Liam about this and he didn't ask if he could play?" Scott questioned.

"Well, actually," Stiles shrugged slightly, making Scott laugh. "I kind of told him he wasn't allowed to play with us until he got his full moon thing under control."

"Stiles," Scott warned, though he wasn't really all that upset with him.

"What! It's about time for us to have some one-on-one bro time, okay?" Stiles said in his own defense.

The door behind Scott opened, and the two teenage boys turned to see Deaton coming out, shortly followed by a very excited Juliet who was practically tackling the veterinarian in a hug. Something told Scott it wasn't the first hug she'd given the veterinarian. Deaton let out a small laugh, patting the young girls back.

"Really, you don't have to keep hugging me. I'm happy to have you on board." Deaton said to a very obviously happy Juliet.

"I'm just so thankful for this. You have no idea how worried I was. After the move, I didn't know if I was going to get a job." Juliet began to ramble, but her now incredibly bright smile didn't seem to begin to face in the slightest.

Thanking Deaton one more time with a quick, yet still surprisingly tight, hug. Juliet turned to head towards the front desk. Scott could tell that she had gotten the job, but Juliet either didn't realize that or didn't care as she came to a stop next to him.

"I got it! We're going to be working together," Juliet exclaimed eagerly to the guy she hardly knew, reaching out to quickly squeeze his forearm excitedly. A small, happy, squeal, left her lips before she fared a bright goodbye to everyone, including a fairly confused Stiles, and turned to bound out of the office.

Stiles watched the girl leave, trying to get a good look at her before definitively deciding he had never seen her before. Once Juliet was completely out of sight, Stiles turned to look at Scott, who was also looking in the direction she'd gone. The goofy smile reappeared on his face.

"Hey, Scott," Stiles said sharply, snapping his friend out of his little daze. Scott slowly looked to Stiles. "Remember when I came in and asked why you were so happy and you said nothing?"

Scott, already having an idea where this was going, felt himself get embarresed as he smiled slowly.

Stiles looked back in the direction the girl had gone and sighed. "Yeah, that had been a load of bullshit hadn't it?"

"Shut up, Stiles. I don't even know her." Scott rolled his eyes, but the smile still hadn't quite managed to fade from his face.
