Chapter 10: Off the Bayou

Hayley lied upon a huge glass table with Sabine and Caroline standing next to her. The witch began her work as she held a pendant, waving it side by side right above Hayley's belly.

Moments went by; quietness prevailing as both of them waited for Sabine to break the silence.

"I think it's a girl," the witch announced, earning happy glances from them.

Mere seconds passed when Sabine turned stoic, worried as she eyed the about to be mother. "No, wait!" They heard her saying.

"Wait what?” Hayley cried, exchanging tensed glances. “Please tell me I'm not having a mini Klaus."

There was no response and it was making room for more tension.

As they both watched, Sabine had her concentration fixed on the pendant. Caroline almost yelped when the lifeless thing began to glow. She was still not quite used to the voodoo that was happening around her.

Sabine suddenly gasped, the pendant leaving her grasp, and touching the ground. "Nos Omnia perdetu El team". The witch chanted while Hayley and Caroline witnessed, their eyes wide opened.

"What was that?" Caroline asked as soon as Sabine returned normal.

"Just witchy anxiety, I guess.” Sabine's voice had shaken slightly. “Anyway, you should celebrate. It's a girl.”

The tension seems to be long forgotten as Hayley and Caroline smiled.

"I'll get you some water,” said sabine as she made her way to the kitchen. Making sure she wasn't being watched, she took out her phone and dialed.

"Hey, Agnes! It's about the werewolf girl."

"You invited me in. Brave move." Klaus commented, glancing around the room with caution. The attic was small and packed and appropriate for a teenage girl like her. Candles lit the place, fresh flowers perched inside the vases, hinting Klaus that Davina was used to visitors.

"I'm not afraid of you." She replied, confidence and honesty evident in her physique.

“Naive but I'll give you that." As he stated, his eyes fell at a particular spot. With so many things squashed inside the attic, it felt odd to him why that place wasn't used up to shift the things.

Davina carefully studied Klaus staring at the spot where the coffin stood. The scent of Sandalwood was filled in the air and she wished Klaus wouldn't be able to realize a cloaking spell was holding the coffin out of his sight.

He was staring at nothing. Her magic was working.

"Why are you here, Klaus? How did you find me?" Davina decided to get straight.

"There's nothing I can't find, love." He replied, withdrawing his gorgeous eyes from the spot, and looked at her. "And now to answer your second question. It's quite simple actually. You see Davina, I'm here willing to offer you an alliance."

Davina chuckled, passing him an uninterested look.

Klaus knew no sane person who knew him would trust him. But its all about the chase. "I know you're friends with Valentine and I also know you help him."

"Then you also might be aware that I'm the one keeping everyone at bay and I can keep you too. So about your alliance or whatever.m, it doesn't interest me at all. "

Klaus crossed his arms. "Now why would a girl deny a chance of better life?"

"What do you mean?"

"I simply mean there are so many things you can get out of me." He said. “The one you wish the most."

"You know nothing about me?"

"I know for a fact that soemone your age would never want to say all the time stuck in small room, hiding," Klaus was confident. "Be my side and I  will offer you the freedom Valentine failed to give you."

“I don't give a damn about it as long as I'm safe. "

"Of course you do". Klaus disagreed.  "Everybody wants freedom. Balentine does keep you safe but so would I. You wouldn't be tucked here—alone and trapped."

Davina looked away. "If you should be worrying about someone first, then it's you."

"See, love. If you think you can take me down, you can't. You lack the means to take me down."

"Maybe I can't kill you but I can make your existence miserable. So walk away before you can. Valentine won't like me having visitors other than him."

"He won't be a problem for that long."

"You think so." She challenged.

Klaus as unaffected and confident smiled. "I know you've aided Valentine with protection spells but for how long. His death is inevitable. So while I plan his murder, you better make up your mind to be on the winning side. "

Davina fell deep into the thoughts.

Since she had been in the attic she barely had seen anyone other than Valentine. Even when people visited the church, she had been alone. Of course, she wanted out but without hurting herself or anyone else.

She peeked at Klaus who stood next to the shelf, prying his eyes at the useless stuff that was piled there.

Letting out a breath, she said. "I already told you. I'm not interested in your alliance. Valentine is my friend. He saved me, kept me safe, and now I owe him for the rest of my life".

Klaus rolled his eyes and dropped on the small sofa. " Let me guess? Saved you from the harvest ritual."

Davina's brows went up, "You know about the harvest?"

"I know so many things or even more than that."

"Really? Then I think you are already aware of the fact about the witches who are after my life. They want me dead for their stupid harvest ritual".

The proud smile of Klaus faded and he was astonished to know a new piece of information.

He got up, collected his thoughts, and said, "What if I wipe out the entire coven of witches. You'll be free and safe. No hiding. Just a normal teenage life. School, books, and boys. Is that enough for you to think and consider my offer? You're a smart girl Davina. Choose the appropriate one".

Saying so, Klaus vanished leaving Davina puzzled.

*********

"Your baby's heart rate is perfect," said the lady doctor to Hayley who had visited her along with Caroline to the bayou.

"Because She's a tough one like her mom " Caroline smiled at her.

"We're pretty much done here, right doctor?" Hayley stood up, feeling done with the appointment for the day.

Caroline's phone vibrated with Rebekah's message demanding their location. She sends the address and goes near Hayley.

"your blood pressure is high. I've got something for you".

The lady was gone and both Hayley and Caroline began to leave when they heard noises and the engine of cars shutting down. Through the window, they saw men getting out and heading toward teh building they were in.

"Something's not right. Hayley supected along with Caroline.

Hayley glanced at the doctor who was engaged in a conversation with Sabine and Agnes.

"Ahh! you know, I m not that good with pills." Hayley lied to the doctor, hinting at caroline to be careful.

The doctor goes toward a corner table and prepared an injection. Caroline and Hayley's suspect was confirmed when those men whisper something to them and Agnes pointed them to Hayley.

Hayley signs to Caroline who understands perfectly. The doctor approaches Hayley with the injection. Caroline rushed to the door while Hayley attacked the doctor and injected her instead.

"Hayley! window! Go, I'll follow you". Caroline shouted and locked the door from inside. Hayley nodded, jumping out effortlessly.

The door was being hit, repeatedly. Caroline leaned against the door with force. She pulled out her phone and calls Klaus. In the third ring, Klaus picks up.

"Hello, Klaus!".

"Ah, weren't you saying a few hours ago that you have no reason to call me, love. Miss me already I see."

"Oh! Shut up!" Caroline yelled. The urgency of the situation was more important. "Klaus, we are in trouble!"

Klaus, who was driving the car, pulled the brakes.

"Hayley and I came here at bayou for a check-up and now these lunatic witches are hell-bent on something fishy. She escaped but I don't think I'm gonna make it. Do find Hayley, okay?" Caroline said while holding the door.

"Where are you, exactly?" Klaus asked, his voice cracking due to fear. But all he got in response were trails of noises that sounded like a door being slammed opened and more noises of men shouting.

***

"Where's the werewolf girl?" One of the men asked Caroline as she struggled to get up, trying to search the phone that fell away. She bumped the unconscious doctor on the floor before she shot up on her legs and caught a knife that was lying on the table.

"Don't come near me or I'll cut you in half." She made the threat.

However, she could sacred none. One of the goons attacked first which she successfully dodged.  Another came instantly, slamming her head against the wall in no time.

Blood oozed out from her wound, rendering her unconscious.

*******

"Where are they, Rebekah?" Klaus growled into the phone, ignoring the fact Rebekah was shot down by the goons.

"Nik, I asked Hayley to run and now she is missing and god knows where's Caroline. There are blood and bodies everywhere. Someone's ripped this lot to shreds and there's no smart-aleck pregnant girl."

"Keep looking for Hayley in the woods. I've reached the bayou clinic." He hung up the phone and pulled over his car in front of the clinic where Hayley and Caroline had come.

Hearing nothing, he still sped over to every corner to check. In the end, he rounded at the corner, in front of the room where he spotted unconscious Caroline.

His heart almost stammered at the thought of her being dead. It calmed when his heightened senses could hear her heartbeat.

"Caroline." He went over there, making her sit and attempting to wake her up.

After a while, she responded with a painful moan. "Klaus!"

"You okay."  He cupped her face as his hypnotic eyes scanned hers at the injury she had at the side of her head. It wasn't bleeding any more.

"Klaus, where's Hayley? They are after her." Caroline asked, completely ignoring her situation.

"Don't worry. We are gonna find her."

Caroline clutched herself to him for support when they both stood up.

"I can't find her." Said Rebekah, as she walked in worried.

"Who took her Rebekah?" He snarled.

"I don't know?"

"What do you mean you don't know and who killed her attackers?"

"I said I don't know" Rebekah yelled at her brother's accusations. "I had an arrow in my heart. So, If it wasn't Hayley, who killed them then....."

Klaus expelled a deep breath and a moment later she heard some noises.
" I think I know."

Smiling, he walked out, followed by his sister and Caroline who were perplexed.

Outside on the front yard stood Elijah lifting an unconscious Hayley in his arms. Both of them had their clothes gathered, faces dirty and Elijah seemed tired.

"Brother."  Rebekah rushed first.
"You pulled the arrow from my heart. Isn't it?" After he responded positively, she asked. "How's Hayley?"

"She's fine, I think."  He answered and shifted his glance at Klaus who hadn't moved from his place. They both exchanged glances with Klaus looking guilty. Shortly after he noticed Caroline as well.

"How did you find us?" Rebekah asked .

"Not now, sister. We need to get home first."
