We Need Masks
"Keeeeith?" Lance called, fridge door wide open. Harlow came out in hopes Lance would sneak her another piece of ham like he did last night.
"What?" Keith asked, setting his phone on the coffee table and getting up to see Lance in the kitchen.
"We're out of milk."
"What?" Keith asked, stepping in Lance's place to look at the fridge. "I just bought some on Thursday."
Lance shrugged. "I ate a lot of cereal."
Keith sighed and looked at his watch. "Saturday morning." He looked up at Lance. "The store is going to be PACKED. There's no way we can stay 6 feet apart from a mob of panic-buying consumers. He closed the fridge door.
"We need masks." Lance finally determined.
"Yeah." Keith said.
Lance perked up- "Wait right here! I have an idea!" He sprinted into their room and Keith heard a drawer open. Lance came out with a bandana over his face. Keith laughed.
"Babe, you look like you're going to rob a train in the 1800's."
Lance pulled it down and grinned. "Okay- let's look something up."
They looked up a tutorial on how to make a mask and found that it seemed to involve either a sewing machine or something elastic like rubber bands and hair ties.
"Pidge has a sewing machine." Lance offered.
Keith grabbed the keys from the hook by the door and followed Lance the two second walk to Pidge's apartment. Lance knocked. Keith had put a leash on Harlow as they were just going next door- not actualy going in.
Pidge came to the door and opened it. She reached down to hold her dog back by the collar- he liked to elope.
"Hey guys."
"Hey Pidge." Lance greeted. "Do you know how to make masks? We need milk on a Saturday morning." He looked down. "Oh- and this is Harlow."
"You guys can come in- Aspen likes other dogs." She said, pit bull wagging her tail excitedly.
Pidge stepped aside from the door to let the boys in. "Actually, Matt and I are sewing masks for nursing staff in hospitals. We can make some for you."
"How much do we owe you?" Keith asked, following behind Pidge and Lance.
Pidge shrugged. "An hour of labor and I'll give you masks for free- that's what neighbors do."
Matt was sitting on the couch in their living room, sewing machine on the coffee table. He had a stack of fabric rectangles and was pinning them together, insie-out. He looked up.
"Hey guys."
"What'cha doin?" Lance asked, sitting on the floor on the other side of the coffee table and looking at the fabric pieces.
"Stabbing myself repeatedly." Matt grumbled.
Pidge laughed. She handed a pair of scissors to Keith. "6" by 9" pieces. We need as many as you can make."
"Cool." Keith said, laying out the fabirc on the carpet on top of a collapsed cardboard box to protect the floor.
Lance helped Matt stab themselves with pins while Pidge sewed the seams and flipped them inside-out and pleated them.
"How many have you made?" Keith asked, pulling his hair back with a hair tie around his wrist.
"About 12." Pidge replied. She pulled another pin out. "But we're picking up speed."
"Pidge." Matt interrupted. "We're out of cut elastic."
"Dibs!" Lance shouted, grabbing the spool of elastic and picking up a pair of scisors.
"7 inches." Matt sighed. "Guess I'm still stuck pinning the masks."
After an hour they had completed another 29 masks before they ran out of fabric.
Keith had lay the final product on the floor. "41 masks. Not bad."
"We need 3 dozen for the hospital so we can each take one to Hunk, too."
Harlow was rolling around on the carpet with Aspen. Pidge and Matt looked through the masks and each took the one they liked the best.
Lance got a blue mask and Keith got a red one. Lance stood up and stretched. "Alright, Harlow. Keith. Let's go back to the apartment and go get some milk."
The boys stood up and Keith took a second mask for Hunk.
"Remember to wash them in hot water after you use them." Pidge reminded, as she knelt down to hold Aspen's collar.
Lance brought Harlow back to their apartment and put her in their room where her bed was. Lance met Keith outside of their door, as Keith had just passed a yellow mask to Hunk.
"Ready?" Keith asked.
"Let's get some milk."
