Chapter 2
When Kit was finished with dinner, she ran back to her room. She was so incredibly excited about the mysterious book that she had found that dinner took way too long. Kit kept on wiggling on her chair until her father said that she could go. She ran back up to her room and Kit felt underneath her pillow, yes, the little book was still there. Teddy sat on the bed, staring glassily at the place.
Kit thought about the book underneath her pillow. She saw reading books as small adventures because her fantasy took her all kinds of places. However, fantasising inside your head is hard to do with someone else.
"Teddy," Kit began, "you know how much I love adventure, right?"
"Yes," answered Teddy.
"Would you mind if I did not take you with me on my next adventure?" Kit wanted Teddy to come along, but he probably would not enjoy it, he was not very fond of reading.
"Depends, what type of adventure?"
"Well, it is quite a bookish one," said Kit. Teddy had to think about the answer he had gotten. Though he did not like to read, he was always up for a good adventure.
"No, I do not mind, but if it was fun, you have to take me next time!" Teddy was quite proud of himself for coming up with such a great idea. Now he did not have to go, because it could be boring, but if it was exciting: he could come with on the next adventure. In conclusion, perfect.
"Of course, Teddy, I will always bring you," said Kit.
Kit wanted to start reading in her new exciting book, but she noticed the time, it was already dark outside. That meant that she needed to get ready for bed. She was still wearing her school uniform and cape, so she changed into her favourite pyjama's and brushed her teeth. Kit's father came to her room to check up on her and to read her a story. However, Kit did not want to read a story, she wanted to read the special book.
"No, dad, I am way too sleepy," said Kit yawning.
"Oh, no bedtime story? You must be really tired, are you coming down with a cold? Get a good night of sleep, and hopefully, you will feel better tomorrow," said her father as he left the room.
Kit felt a bit bad about lying to him, but she really wanted to read the novel! She had been waiting for this the entire afternoon, and now she could finally take a look. Kit got the book from underneath her pillow and put it on her lap. She turned on the reading lamp next to her bed and started looking at the cover.
It was a leather book, the inside was full of handwritten notes and pictures. The book was old, that was clearly visible through the paper. It was coloured yellow, and the ink had faded a little. This was not the oddest thing about the book. The pictures were. The images that were taped to the pages showed creatures that Kit had never seen before. It looked like a feathered mouse, it had something of a bunny as well. However, Kit was not scared of it, it seemed so peaceful and extremely fluffy. She wanted to pet it. Kit looked at the photo until she had seen every detail.
She flipped through the book, Kit made sure she saw every page and even tried to read the letters. Her eyes became heavier and heavier with every page she read. Until her eyes finally were fully shut. The book still laying on top of Kit, she had fallen asleep.
When Kit opened her eyes again, she was not laying in her bed, she was not sitting on the ground in her bedroom, she might not even have been in her own town. All around her, there were tall green trees, and she seemed to sit on a stone path. Kit immediately stood up and looked at herself.
"Is this a dream?" she said out loud. That was when she looked down at her clothes, she was wearing her uniform. The cape that she made out of a towel was waving around her neck again. It seemed to be a dream, but it felt so much more real than that.
Then she looked beside her, there was Teddy, dusting himself off.
"Teddy! You came!" said Kit excited.
"Well, I did not mean to, where are we?" said Teddy, he did not seem to be pleased by missing out on his beauty sleep.
The sky was light blue, and as far as she possibly could look, there was not a single being. Either the animals here did not want to get seen, or there were none. Kit felt entirely lost in the strange land. Teddy was not a very good help either. She wanted to go home, but at the same time, there was something curious about this place.
Well, there were only two options at this point. Kit and Teddy could either stay where they were or discover the world for themselves until she woke up. Kit was quite a curious girl and decided that she could not sit still any longer. So, they went on walking, but they stayed on the path since her father told her that it is the safest way of travelling.
After walking for a little while, she had walked out of the park. In the distance, she saw some figures. They were round and seemed to be moving. Kit was interested in what was going on, her pace increased. The trees seemed to change colour in this part of the land, she looked to the left, and they were pink, but when she looked to the right, they were dark blue.
"Such a peculiar place," thought Kit, while walking to the strange figures. The closer they got, the more familiar the creatures looked; however, she could not remember where she had seen them before.
She came near and slowly she started to realise where she had seen the figure; the book. But the cute little feathery thing was not as cute and tiny as Kit had thought. The creature was at least thrice her size, both in height and width. Nobody was around except for this thing, the others must have fled.
"Hello, sir," said Kit hesitating, "may I ask who you are?"
The creature did not respond, but it did smile at her, that made her feel more comfortable. That is when she noticed its head, it had different strings around it. Maybe others used it for work in this land.
"Can you speak?" asked Kit, just in case it was scared of her as well.
"Yes, but not good. Where you need to goes?" said the creature.
"If I can ask: what are you?"
"That is not nice to asking, but I is Tardigate, you call me Tardi." Tardi smiled sweetly at Kit.
"Well, I am Kit, that is short for Katherine, and this is Teddy," said Kit.
"Υou lost?" the Tardigate asked.
"A little bit yes, if we can be lost when we do not have anywhere to go, at least," said Kit. Teddy hid behind her, he seemed to be shy around others.
"You are a hero?" asked the Tardigate nodding at Kit. She smiled back. So he continued: "Then you needs go to follow path. You must find capital."
"Wait before you go, where are we?" asked Kit.
"Land, yes, this is land Pasa. Land of many, you see soon," said Tardi.
"Pasa? Alright, does everyone speak English, or is it just you?" Teddy felt a little bit more comfortable and stepped away from Kit's legs.
"Many speaking language, but I is worse than others," said Tardi, he was quite adorable. Teddy came closer and started petting the Tardigate. Tardi smiled, but Kit did not think that it was a sign of happiness, it was a natural state. That is when the Tardigate's ears wiggled, and his eyes grew big. Teddy and Kit heard the great noise a little later. It sounded like a thousand horses were about to trample them. The Tardi ran away, and Kit started waving her arms.
"Stop! Stop! Don't run over us!" She waved with one arm swift through the air, the other picked up Teddy.
A big group of deer-like creatures stormed in Kit's direction. They were a bit bigger than she expected deer, but their owl-like heads were the more terrifying part of the animals. One of them, likely the leader of the group, stopped to look at her. The others followed.
"What must one be?" asked the owl-deer type of thing.
"I'm Kit, that is short for Katherine, and this is Teddy." The deer whispered together, they did not have to move their bodies, their heads just turned together. Teddy and Kit stood next to the group for a while. A little while later they turn back to Kit.
"We are still very much confused about what a so-called Kit is, but can we help one, one seems different than others?"
"Oh, we are just trying to find the capital!" said Kit.
The deer put their heads together again, the few words that Kit could pick up on were "The one" and some arguing from the group. When they were done their heads tilted back to Kit and Teddy.
"One must come with us. One may not say no, this is an order." Kit looked confused at the group, what had she done wrong? Was this some sort of police? Kit was terrified, and Teddy seemed to be very uncomfortable, he hid in her arms.
One of the deer kneeled before her and told her to get on to his back. Kit hesitated, but the other deer formed a circle around them, she had no other choice. She climbed on his back and grabbed Teddy with her left arm and the owl deer's head with her right.
The deer started to sprint away immediately. Kit was extremely scared and quickly closed her eyes. She felt the wind in her face, they were going so fast. She wanted to talk to Teddy in case he was terrified as well. However, Kit was too scared herself to even open her eyes.
After a few minutes of deer-riding, she dared to open her eyes a little. The view was beautiful, on her right side were mountains so high that she could not see the tops. They seemed to be covered in white glitter. On the left there was a big field with grass, in the grass, there were little bunny-type of creatures. However, they flew! They flew from one spot to another; it was a top adorable sight. Kit was so intrigued by the view that she forgot that she was supposed to be scared.
The road seemed to never end, but then she saw the capital. It was enormous. The tops of the houses appeared to reach for the sky. The colours were vibrant and fun. It almost looked like candy. Before they could reach the city-gates, there was a great stone on the left side.
The deer stopped in unison in front of the stone. The one that Kit sat on kneeled again, to gesture that she could get off his back now.
"Why are we here?" asked Kit.
"One must see for oneself; we are done here. Goodbye, tiny ones," said the main deer. The deer took off again and left Kit and Teddy confused alone.
The stone, where they were left at, had strange symbols carved in it. The symbols slowly became less clear when they reached the bottom of the stone.
"What does it say?" Kit asked out loud. A passer-by stopped and looked at Kit. The creature tapped her on the shoulder and said:
"C-c-can I help you?" Kit turned around and saw a boy. The boy was taller than her, probably also older, but he could not be fully human. His ears, they were pointy and big as those of an animal.
"I was just wondering about the stone and what it says," said Kit.
"Y-You, you can't read it?" the boy asked Kit.
"No, can you?" Kit looked at the boy again, he seemed a little bit shy and nervous around her. Kit could no longer keep her curiosity to herself, and she said:
"What are you," she said, "if I may ask."
"Oh, oh, I am an elf, but, but what are you?" the elf asked.
"I'm Kit, short for Katherine, and this is Teddy. An elf? That is really cool, do you have a name, elf?" Kit smiled at the elf, he did not seem like a threat.
"Y-yes, of course, I-I-I am Yan, did you tr-travel here?" said Yan.
"Kind of, yes, but what does the stone say?"
Yan seemed to hesitate whether or not he should tell the strange duo the stone's story. He looked at Kit while she was trying to smile sweetly at him.
"Okay I-I will tell you the pr-prophecy:
One shall come to spread delight
They will be strange
Strange to land and sight
They must have a heart meant to change
This one will have power over magic
The key shall be wittiness
If not then there must be no panic
They are not the one for happiness
The mountain far aside
Is the place to be countrywide
The one shall be small*
But it will gain control
We, we are all waiting for someone who will g-give us back our ha-happiness," said Yan. "Someone that is strange to land, I am strange!" yelled Kit out loud.
"That is tr-tr-true, are you also w-witty and small? Do, do you want to change the world?" asked Yan.
"Oh, I would love to! Maybe I am the one," said Kit with a broad smile on her face.
"Th-there is a great possibility."
Kit stared at the rock again. She saw something peculiar next to the text.
"What does the little star mean?" she asked.
"Well, we d-don't know, it might be that t-there was an extra p-p-paragraph, there where it is all blurry. How-however, it can-n-not be that important, since nobody ever t-t-talks about it," said Yan.
"It must be true then; I am the one."
