COBRA KAI
original chapter

IT'S BEEN ABOUT 3 WEEKS since Scarlett and Hawk fought and she was actually doing a lot better. After only two sessions her therapist diagnosed her with depression. Usually, it would take longer but since this was such a common mental illness it was easy to spot. She was able to pick up her antidepressants yesterday and she felt like her life could finally stop going downhill. She even started going back to AA meetings.

She checked on Miguel often and he was doing better. He couldn't stand yet but, he could move both feet even if he didn't know he was doing it sometime. On weekends when she wasn't at meetings or hanging out with her friends she was teaching him everything that they were learning in school since he couldn't go back. Their school isn't necessarily wheelchair accessible.

She also found herself thinking about Doni and it kind of scared the shit out of her. She was finally starting to see him now that they were getting to know each other more and it was like he was the male version of her. She was trying to convince herself that she was having a fake crush on Doni to distract herself from Hawk but, that may not be the case.

Mar had been contemplating on talking to Scarlett but, she was always nervous too. She knew she had to apologize and she couldn't wait forever. "Hi." Mar came up next to her. Once Scarlett heard her voice she stopped her movements and pushed the book she was taking out back into her locker as she looked over at Mar.

"What do want?" Scarlett asked. "To apologize." Mar breathed out. "It took you a month?" Scarlett fully turned her body to face her. "I was a bitch, I know. I never really liked it at Cobra Kai and I didn't like the way everyone acted but you were my friend and I shouldn't have said those things. Especially the slut shaming even though you're not. Mr. Larusso and everyone else always said that people in Cobra Kai were horrible so I always listened but I'm sorry for everything. We don't have to be friends or anything I just wanted to say that. Can you forgive me?"

"You're going towards the bottom of the kill list." Scarlett crossed her arms over her chest and Mar just stared at her, confused. "That was a joke," Scarlett stated. "So..." Mar trailed off. "Look, you really hurt me. Physically and mentally. It's going to take me a while to forgive you but, at least you're apologizing I'll give you that. So we're cool. I guess." Scarlett turned back around to take her book out. "Okay, thanks."

SCARLETT AND DONI were kind of early for lunch and they were sitting at their usual table, waiting for everyone else. "So, she apologized?" Doni leaned forward in his seat. "Yeah." Scarlett nodded. "Are you forgiving her?" Doni questioned. He didn't really want her to, I mean she has to do leg workouts every day because of the injury. "Not completely just, tolerating the fact that she's still breathing."

"Well, if she tries to break your other leg, I'll confine her to a hospital bed." Doni joked as he opened his water bottle. "You'll probably go to juvie," Scarlett informed. "Who says I care?" Doni looked back up at her. Once his eyes met hers butterflies erupted in her stomach and she quickly looked to the right.

"Hey." Moon smiled as she walked over to them. "Hey." Scarlett held her arms out and Moon fell into her embrace. "So, since it's Friday I was wondering if we could do something fun as a group. Including Piper." Moon said after she took the seat next to Scarlett.

"Does the group also include Yasmine?" Doni gave Moon a look. "Okay I know not everyone likes her but, she's my friend I don't want to exclude her." Moon tried to reason. "Can we remember the fact that she used to bully Scarlett?" Doni mentioned. "If she says anything I'll ask her to go," Moon promised.

"Okay, how about bowling?" Moon suggested. "Doni just got his cast off don't you have to go easy on the arm?" Scarlett asked. "My physical therapy is going good but I can use that thing that you roll the ball off of. Just in case it hurts to actually use my arm."
"Really?" Scarlett raised her eyebrows. "What? I wanna go." Doni shrugged. Cleo came with her tray and sat on the other side of Scarlett.

"What are we talking about?" Cleo asked as her dimples poked through her skin. "I'm convincing them to go bowling with us tonight," Moon replied. "Okay, I'm in but, we have to work on our project with Demetri after school so like 7?" Scarlett gave in.

"Can you drive since your car has three rows?" Cleo asked Scarlett. "Yes."
"I'm sitting in the front so don't try to fight me for it again." Doni looked at Moon. "Doni, you always sit in the front," Moon argued. Cleo pitched in and they kind of started to go at each other's throats.

"You know, a bottle of tequila would be so good right now." Scarlett joked. The three of them looked over at her and she just laughed. "That's not funny, Scarlett."

SCARLETT WAS SCROLLING through her photos while she waited for Doni and Demetri to come over. She always liked looking back at pictures she took. Her finger stopped moving once she saw red hair. After the fight, before Scarlett turned off her phone she deleted every photo that she had of Hawk. Well, what she thought was every photo. She missed one. Surprisingly, she wasn't as upset as she excepted—she just stared at it.

It was a picture of them in the car, Hawk's hair was down and his head was resting against hers. Hawk broke her that night, so much that she wanted to relapse. She searched for alcohol in her kitchen while her mom was asleep even though Willa stopped buying it after her incident. Scarlett just hoped she forgot. But now that she was getting better she was kind of glad she didn't have Hawk in her life right now.

As much as she missed him he wasn't  him anymore he was someone else. He was her Hawk anymore and she couldn't change that. He was the worst version of himself and she was so fragile. She was glad because if this didn't happen she would have never stepped into Nova's office. She wouldn't have gone back to another AA meeting and she definitely wouldn't have admitted that she was an alcoholic. She was able to hide it at Moon's party since she was in a good place and her drinking only got bad when she was upset.

So she just deleted the picture. Once again she wasn't upset she was just disappointed with how everything went. She still has Polaroids of him but she put them in a box and stored it away in the closet no one used after her first therapy session. She may have been going through a tough time but the help she was getting made her feel better than ever. She had Doni to thank for encouraging her but she was mostly proud of herself.

...

"HAVING FUN?" Moon asked as she sat in front of Scarlett at the table. They were waiting for their turn to bowl again, Piper and Yasmine were up. Moon, Piper—and Scarlett were a team, and Doni—Cleo, and Yasmine were on the other team. "Yeah, I am."

"And how are you feeling?" Moon smiled. "Really great...Except I found an old picture of Hawk and me earlier. I really cared about him, I'm just so disappointed with the way things turned out." Scarlett sighed. "I broke up with Hawk because I didn't understand how he could be so sweet to me one second but he could treat people like that the next. And I felt like it was only a matter of time for him to treat me like that. I was hoping that with you things would be different but you're doing great right now you don't need him. And I know there's another really hot guy that likes you."

Scarlett noticed how Moon's eyes shifted over to something that was behind Scarlett's chair. She looked behind her seeing Doni sitting back in his seat, having a conversation with Cleo. "Doni?" Scarlett asked, a bit shocked. "What it wasn't obvious?" Moon laughed. Scarlett didn't really realize how much she was smiling but she definitely was.

"Judging by that smile and those rosy cheeks I'm guessing that you feel the same way about him."
"Yeah..."
"Then go for it." Moon encouraged.

"That's the point I don't know how to go for it. With Hawk everything just like fell into place it was like the universe was doing all the work for me. I don't know how to do the dating thing I never even dated Hawk. And after my close to rape experience I never wanted to date anyone." Scarlett ranted. "You did say that you were feeling a lot better about that whole situation every time you talked about it with Nova."

     "That's true."
"You guys just need to hang out alone without the rest of us for once."
"We've hung out alone before," Scarlett said defensively. "Really? When?" Moon chuckled.

"A few weeks ago we were alone at my place."
"And what did you guys do?"
"Karate," Scarlett stated. Moon's face scrunched up a bit and her lips moved inward—creating a thin line. "What?"
"Fighting isn't very romantic."

Moon looked up and realized that Piper and Yasmine were done and Doni was getting up. "Well, it's time for us to switch out and Doni is standing up. Go!" Moon stood up and tried to pull Scarlett off of her chair. "Moon." Scarlett scolded. "Don't be shy." Moon pulled her off and lightly pushed her over.

"I hope you're ready for me to win this round." Doni leaned down near Scarlett's ear as she walked by him. She got that tingly feeling again. "At least you're confident." Scarlett looked back at him before she went to go pick up a ball.

She went up first. She stepped forward and rolled the red ball that was in her hand down the lane, leaving three pins still standing. She heard Doni mumbling and her head whipped around to look at him. "Did you say something?" Scarlett tilted her head. "No." Doni smiled.

Scarlett hasn't bowled that much but she ended up winning the round. "I recall you saying that you were gonna win." Scarlett teased as she walked in front of Doni. "You just got lucky. It's probably just my arm."
"Mhm. Keeping lying to yourself it's cute." Once Doni heard the word "cute" he just kind of gave her a look. A look that made her knees weak.

"Not cute. Forget I said that." Scarlett cleared her throat. "Are you okay?" Doni asked. "Yeah, definitely." Scarlett just nodded and quickly walked back over to the table where Moon was still sitting at.

"What happened you were doing good?" Moon sounded bummed. "He happened. He just looked at me in a certain way and I panicked. Why does he have to look like that?" Scarlett groaned, taking her hands through her hair. "It's my turn, I have to go..." Moon trailed off, walking away from the table slowly. "He's also walking over here," Moon whispered yelled before she walked away. "No, Moon," Scarlett mumbled.

"Hey." Doni walked in front of the table. "Hey." Scarlett smiled, nervous. "Do you mind if I sit here?" Doni gestured towards the now empty chair in front of her. "No."
"No you don't mind or no you don't want me to sit here?"
"I don't mind."

"Are you sure you're okay? You kind of ran away from me." Doni sat down. "I didn't run away necessarily." Scarlett denied. "Yeah, you did." Doni put his hands in the pockets of his jacket.

"Maybe it's just like anxiety or something." She obviously wasn't going to tell him "I'm acting like this because you're really hot and I feel like throwing up."

"Well, anxiety is a side effect you can have when you first take antidepressants."
"Really?"
"Yeah, do you need anything?"
"No. I'm fine."

"I was also wondering if you wanted to come over tomorrow." Doni tapped his foot against the floor. "Oh. Um, I'm hanging out with Miguel tomorrow. Johnny keeps coming up with these crazy ways to make him stand and he wants me to come."
"When do you get back home after that?"
"Like 5." Scarlett guessed. "You don't have to but if you want to come over after that you can."
"Sure." Scarlett smiled. "Okay." Doni smiled back at her before he stood back up. There the universe was helping her out again.
