twenty-eight

I wake up to a loud vibrating noise that's my phone ringing.

The clock reads 7:06 a.m. The caller I.D. is unknown. "Hello?"

Silence.

"Hello?"

Still silence.

Then a sudden thought comes to mind. What if it's Dean? My heart starts racing and without thinking I speak up, "Dean is that you?"

Silence.

Seconds later the person calling hangs up. I lock my phone feeling quite disappointed. I'm angry at Dean and very hurt yet every atom in my body wants him to call me.

I want to hear his voice and see his face again.

I want to so bad.

When my phone rings again I get a little too excited and answer immediately. "Dean?"

"Actually, its Brie. Sorry to disappoint you."

"Oh. Hey Brie."

"Wow you sound so excited."

"Sorry, I just woke up and ..."

"And you thought I was Dean calling."

"Yeah."

"Hmm. I'm in town visiting my mom. Want to go out for coffee?"

"Sure."

"Great, I need to talk to you about some things."

>>>

"Can we stop at the grocery store first?"

"Yes, go ahead."

"Alrighty. So do tell me what's going on with you?"

She pulls in a grocery store as I keep looking  out the window. "I don't know. I'm tired of feeling so down. I'm ready to move on with my life except I don't know how to."

"What did you think of, Randy?"

"What does Randy have to do with this?"

"Well you said you're ready to move on so why not try moving on with, Randy?"

"Who says I'm talking about a guy?"

Brie glances at me when she's done parking her car. "Come on, Aj, I'm not stupid."

"Okay fine its about, Dean but I don't know. I'm not ready to jump into conclusions and like randomly start dating, Randy. Plus I don't even know if he likes me. He probably thought I was super weird after that night."

"I'm not saying to date, Randy. Just go out with him and hang out you don't have to date. After my breakup I felt the same way you did until I decided to get over it completely. Then Randy introduced me to Roman. He's such a king! He's so handsome too ah. Every time I look at him I melt. He's just so, so, perfect! And I want to-"

Brie stops blabbing when she realizes she got off topic. "Sorry, I'm blabbing too much about him. He's just too precious." She giggles.

I grin at her happiness, "I'm glad for you, Brie. You deserve to be happy."

We enter the store and she grabs a shopping cart. "But like I was saying before I got so off topic, like yeah you should hang out with, Randy. He asked me for your number you know and he also told me he thinks you're really cute. Of course I didn't give him your number because I'd never do that without permission, but if you want to I can. Or I can give you his and you give him a call."

"Ah well-"

"Okay! I'll send it right now." She stops walking and quickly unlocks her phone. Seconds later I receive a text from her with Randy's number.

"Wow thanks." I reply with a chuckle.

"I'm just trying to be a good friend, Aj! Getting over a guy is difficult but fear not that's why you have me and Nikki and Paige and all of your friends, okay?"

"Yeah I know. Thank you."

"No problem! Now let's go."

"What exactly are we shopping for?" I ask Brie when I realize I don't even know why we're here.

She walks towards the fruit stand, "I forgot to get a few things when I went grocery shopping yesterday. I got so distracted because I was watching Roman's pictures on my phone. He's got a six pack! And those biceps and triceps holy shit. Like can he choke me with them, please?"

"You really like this guy huh?"

"Oh yes!"

"I don't even remember how he looks. Everything from that night is sort of a blur."

Brie takes out her phone once again and drops the bananas she was looking at. "He's this hottie and he sent me this selfie of him working out at the gym yesterday! I wheezed when I saw it and nearly choked on my apple."

"Wow, he is muscular and very handsome."

"Yes very. In person his muscles feel better."

"I can imagine."

"Ahh." She sighs putting her phone away and turning her attention back to the fruits.

Just as she grabs a bag to put the bananas she gasps. "What is it?"

"You know what else I forgot to get?"

"What?"

"Vagisil. Can you go get it for me?"

"You want me to get your vagina soap?"

"Please?"

"You better be glad I love you."

"Yay! I'll be waiting here."

I start looking for soaps to find my way there. Soon enough I encounter the soap aisle. I keep walking down until I spot the aisle where there's feminine products.

I'm about to walk when on the other side I see Layla. At first I think of turning around and just not getting the soap but then I stop myself.

I can't possibly keep running away from Layla every time I see her. So I push my feelings aside and make my way down the aisle. She also doesn't mind me here because she continues to look for whatever she's looking for.

I'm trying to find Brie's soap when the curiosity hits me. I turn my head slightly to see what Layla is looking for.

She's standing right in front of ... the pregnancy tests?

No, I must be mistaken.

But then she reaches over and grabs a pregnancy test box. My mouth instantly goes dry and I feel the tears in my eyes.

It could be for someone else, right? Maybe her friend, right?

She catches me looking and I quickly turn my head. "What are you looking at?"

I keep my eyes focused on the shelfs avoiding eye contact and not replying to her question. My breathing starts speeding up and I know any second my eyes are going to overflow with acid tears.

I feel her burning gaze on me as she's walking by. When I see that her back is turned to me I look at the box that's in her hands.

It suddenly feels like my world is collapsing. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse.

"What took you so long? Did you get lost or something?" Brie chuckles as I put her soap down on the cart.

She stops laughing she she sees my face. "What's wrong, Aj?"

"I think Layla is pregnant." I whisper quietly.

"What? Who's Layla?"

"Deans girlfriend."

"Why do you think that?"

"I just saw her grabbing a pregnancy test from the shelf."

"It's maybe not hers."

"Who else would if be for?"

"Maybe her friends?"

"I'm pretty sure it's hers." When I'm finish my sentence I choke on the last word. Brie immediately wraps her arms around me.

"Don't jump to conclusions yet, Aj."

"It's pretty obvious. I guess he's really not meant for me."
