chapter twenty nine
Their leader was always a quiet man, that's what made his authority all the scarier when he did finally snap.
Although recently, he noticeably didn't have the energy to even argue about the stack of dishes that began to pile by the sink, or how the boys failed to tidy after themselves.
Consequently, his silence caused everyone in the house to falter without the eldest even realising himself.
"Oh," Hwayoung yelped as her exit from Jacob's room landed her body slamming against someone else's. "Sorry."
"It's okay." Sangyeon mumbled, looking down at the floor.
He was sulking, even his once perfect posture was lazy, his once wide smile was practically non-existent. It worried everyone, even the girl. "Are you alright?"
Over the last month, she found it difficult to deal with the differing emotions of all the boys in the house. Most days were good days, but there were always a few bad days. Not everyone was happy all the time, but she appreciated that most of them at least tried to put on a brave face for her.
They appreciated that they were living with a girl who was not here by choice, and the last thing she wanted to deal with on top of her existing trauma would be hormonal young men.
"Me?" Sangyeon asked dazed, finally looking between the girls eyes as she looked around awkwardly. "Oh, I'm fine."
Her mouth opened slightly, and he half expected a protest, instead she simply smiled through her now pursed lips.
"Okay," Hwayoung said simply. "Hope so."
With that, she walked down the hallway, out of sight. It was then that the boy finally took a breath, not realising he had even held one for so long.
He tried to ignore the warm feeling in his chest at the thought of her not persisting. He wasn't sure what he wanted her to say, but maybe that's all she needed to.
"All good?" Jacob asked from the doorway, seeing the boy standing still outside it.
"Yeah," the leader lied, standing up straighter, feeling the emptiness around him now that she had walked away. "Pathetic..." he whispered to himself.
"Clearly not," the blonde shrugged. "What's going on?"
Sangyeon sighed, closing the door behind him as he stepped into the room. He almost bit his tongue in an attempt to stop himself from even mentioning anything, but if he knew he could trust one person, unfortunately it had to be Jacob - the one who was closest to her. "I'm jealous."
His friend stayed quiet, nodding slowly as though it wasn't even news to him.
"I'm jealous because he's always around her," Sangyeon continued, groaning slightly at the thought. "They act like nothing ever happened. She's friends with him after he was the only one who stood against her, she's forgiven him like it was nothing. Like him practically assaulting her was absolutely nothing."
Jacob listened, understanding everything he was saying to him. He truthfully had those thoughts himself, he just tried his best to ignore it.
"And she's acting like our kiss was nothing," he continued, throwing himself down on the boys bed with his eyebrows furrowed. "That's what hurts the most."
He stayed silent, his eyes scared to look up to even see the blonde boys face, which began to wash over with a small smile. "Welcome back."
"Huh?" Jacob simply laughed. "This isn't funny."
"I know," the younger sighed, smiling nonetheless. "That's the most you've said in weeks."
"Wait," Sangyeon stalled, pointing a finger at the boy. "You didn't question when I mentioned our kiss."
"We live in a house with younger, hyper boys," he referred to the gushing blonde boy who could never shut up about the smooching he heard down his earpiece. "And I just so happen to share a room with her currently and she considers me her best friend. So..."
The leader almost smiled at the thought of the girl telling Jacob. He wondered if her eyes lit up the same way his did when he thought about it, a stupid smile spreading over her face too.
"But, why?" Sangyeon eventually asked, earning a confused look. "Why is it they seem the closest now?"
"It is strange," Jacob sighed. He of all people couldn't bare the thought of losing someone else to Hyunjae or his wicked ways. "I find myself annoyed about it too."
"Expected," the elder smiled sadly. Thoughts of how low the boy stooped after the brunette pursued Minyung flooded his mind. "How is she so forgiving?"
"You like her, don't you?" The blonde asked, earning a scoffed laugh from the boy.
Eventually, he looked up, the sad smile never wiped from his face as his lips tugged downwards ever so slightly. "Unfortunately, yes."
"Then you'd know how great she is, right?" Jacob wore a similar smile, shaking his head. "She's far more forgiving now than we had ever thought she was. But I don't think we have a right to question that. We just need to accept it."
"It sucks to see them hanging out," Sangyeon nodded, looking towards the window with the curtains still closed over. "He never attaches himself to people like this."
"Since Minyung," the blonde gulped. "He's never really had the chance."
The two sat in silence a minute longer. It was clear that they were deep in thought, their eyes fixated on the bit of land that was visible through the gap in the curtains.
Jacob was right, as far as the leader was concerned. The involvement of another female presence just so happened to get the boys attention, and whilst he wanted so badly to consider that it was some perverted, shameless attachment, he couldn't help but wonder.
"Do you think he really sees her in Hwayoung?" The leader suggested, glancing over at his friend.
"Maybe he does," the blonde sighed, shaking his head. "I guess everyone does, a little."
"Don't make this all sound weird," Sangyeon grumbled, making his best friend chuckle. "The girl I like reminds everyone of my sister."
"It isn't like that," Jacob laughed, shaking his head. It really wasn't like that, but maybe it was the plausible explanation for Hyunjae's attachment. "I'm saying that as easy as it is to be angry at him, I learned the best thing to do is to see it from his perspective."
The leader sighed, looking over at the blonde. The oh so wise blonde. "And what would that be?"
"If you like her," Jacob smiled sadly. "You shouldn't be shocked that someone else does."
His words played on the elders mind all day. He didn't get up to much, and maybe that's what made his words so impactful.
He had nothing to take his mind off things, except for the fact that she was now no where to be seen. His instincts were torn between wanting to keep her safe as a human being who is in danger and wanting to selfishly know where she is, what she's up to.
He realised that the latter was not a good look on him, but nonetheless, he still found himself looking. "Looking for Hyunjae?"
Jacob glanced at the boy from the computer, Sangyeon shrugging in response. "Why would I be looking for him?" He mumbled.
"Maybe to ask him some things," the blonde insinuated, noticing Younghoon looking up from the computer beside him. "Like I said earlier."
"Oh," the leader nodded. "I should probably do that."
The eldest left the main room smoother than he entered, the others giving him suspicious looks whilst the majority knew exactly what was going on. It was no secret that he liked her, and it was also no secret that Hyunjae couldn't seem to stay away from her.
Sangyeon tried to ignore the thoughts of her for now, he should seek out to find Hyunjae - not her.
He should ask him what he's been wanting to ask, he should put his mind at ease and know what was really going on in his friends mind.
Although, that would prove difficult when he didn't seem to be in any of the rooms. "Have you seen Hyunjae?"
Juyeon looked up to see his leader at the door frame. "I have, for I am his room mate," he replied matter of factly. "I'm sure he's upstairs."
"Upstairs, where?" The elder pushed, Juyeon chuckling.
"Where else?" He tilted his head, innocently. "On the roof terrace, where he always seems to be these days."
Sangyeon wanted so badly to sigh, but he knew how close the two of them were. His sigh would only be the topic of conversation between them. Instead, he opted for a smile. "Thanks."
Mumbling, he made his way to the staircase, wondering why he had took such a liking to the spot nowadays. He knew exactly why, and looking at the stairs before him - he was reminded of the girls giggles that night he found them here.
His stomach bubbled in anticipation, he wasn't quite sure how to speak to Hyunjae about his feelings.
But when he heard the sound of her voice again, all worries about that flew out into the air as he opened the door. "Sangyeon?"
The girl glanced over to see the leader standing before them, looking between the two almost frantically. "What are you doing?"
"Huh?" Hwayoung hummed, looking at the boy in confusion as she pursed her lips, looking beside her. "I'm sitting here with Hyunjae."
"I was worried about you." Sangyeon replied simply.
"No need," the girl replied casually with a gentle smile. And although her words were an attempt to be reassuring, they in fact did the complete opposite.
He wanted so badly to say that there was in fact a need for him to be so worried, and maybe she couldn't see that just yet. Although, he was sure she soon would. "Can you leave us for a minute, Hyunjae?"
The brunette looked between the two, his eyes almost dimmed in defeat, although the leader couldn't quite be sure what his expression read, for he was focused on one thing only - her. He should have known that his focus would always have been on her, and not him. "Sure."
The boy patted the girls back gently, walking by the elder as he eyed him suspiciously, but left nonetheless.
It was then the two remained in silence, until the girl wasn't too sure how long she could sit like this.
Rising to her feet, she tilted her head. "I get that it must be hard not to worry," she started. "But I'm in the best place, right? I'm not going anywhere, I know I can't for now. I'll never be far, and I'm in the company of your team."
"That doesn't matter," Sangyeon mumbled, avoiding her eyes. "I'll still worry."
"Why?" Hwayoung almost chuckled. It wasn't because it was funny, but it was always a bit uncomfortable for her to adjust to someone genuinely caring for her.
His eyes finally met hers, and the pit of jealousy in his stomach still bubbled. "Because I like you."
The girl was evidently dumbfounded. Her eyes widened ever so slightly and her mouth lay agape, but she wasn't as surprised by his words than it may have appeared. They kissed one another, it had to have meant something, no matter how much.
"And it might sound ridiculous, once we never really got along," he babbled. "But I know that's how I feel because it hurts any time I see you with him."
"Is that because of me, or the grudge you hold against him?" Hwayoung tilted her head, the boy completely freezing.
It was then a scoff escaped his lips. His confession vanished into thin air, barely acknowledged more than a simple stall of her breath. It was then that he turned away towards the door, embarrassment flushing on his cheeks as his hands still trembled.
It was then that the girl felt guilty, chewing the inside of her cheek. "Wait, Sangyeon."
"Hmm?" He hummed, closing his eyes for a second as he tried his best to not imagine the look on her face.
Hesitant, the girl simply bit her tongue. Another time, maybe she would utter the words.
"I'll communicate with you better," she smiled sadly. "So you don't have to worry."
