chapter thirteen

Sangyeon hummed as he walked around the apartment, cleaning up the mess that the younger boys had seemed to leave from the night before. "How much fun can you have on a Tuesday night?"

"Too much," Sunwoo said croakily from the couch, opening one eye to glance at his leader. "Do you need help?"

The eldest shrugged, tossing more stuff in the bin bag he carried. "It would be appreciated."

"Okay," the red haired boy nodded. "Chanhee! Sangyeon needs help!"

"I didn't even drink with you last night, idiot," the boy shouted back from his room, causing Sunwoo to shrug and close his eyes over again.

It was typical of him, therefore Sangyeon didn't feel too let down. Instead he worked through it quickly, ignoring the fact that some of the members walked in and out of the room without even helping.

Except for Younghoon who threw his empty bottle of water in the bin his leader was holding, patting his back as he walked by him.

"Is he ever this productive?" Hyunjae asked Haknyeon as the two stood by their door frames respectively.

"Of course he is," the boy replied, furrowing his eyebrows. "Every couple of months."

"Not true, I'm always cleaning your messes," Sangyeon interfered, sighing of relief as he tied a knot in the bag. "I'll take this with me."

Changmin peaked his head out of the door, seeing his leader fully clothed with an accomplished look on his face. "Where are you going?"

"Just out," he replied casually. "I'll be back soon."

"Hey, not unsupervised," the boy argued, the second youngest sprawled across the couch now opening his eyes wholly to see what the commotion was. "If I can't go out without Chanhee on my back every step of the way then neither can you."

"Ah, are we forgetting who the leader is?" Sangyeon chuckled, shaking his head. "I need to do this alone."

The red haired boy sat up, narrowing his eyes at the leader. "Why so secretive? Do you have a date?"

The boys began to talk amongst themselves, agreeing with Sunwoo's word as the leader simply watched their commotion, waiting for it to calm down. "No, I don't."

"Then I'll come with you," Eric suggested, standing up as though he didn't have a hangover from hell.

"No ones coming with me," the leader insisted again. "I'll be fine on my own."

Jacob emerged from his room, leaning against the door frame as he nodded in support of his leader who glanced over at him with knowing eyes.

The blonde felt proud that he knew where he was headed, and knew that after this, everything would be somewhat okay.

"Why doesn't Jacob go with him then?" Changmin asks, a sea of agreements muttering from the others' lips. "He'll be safe then."

"I think I'll go back to bed," Jacob winked at Sangyeon, watching as the boy turned towards the door, leaving everyone to talk amongst themselves.

They mainly asked questions about what had gotten into the boy, he seemed different this morning, chirpier than usual and more secretive than ever.

The blonde sighed of relief in his bed, knowing that this was all for the better.

Sangyeon glanced up at the door again. This time, he was really expecting a punch.

Deservedly, he thought to himself as he tried to pluck up the courage again to chap the door in front of him. Except, his hand wouldn't bring itself to move, to lift and get this over and done with.

Part of him wanted her to open up, for him to simply say he was sorry and run, but he found himself thinking about the last time and what Jacob said.

Was she really more than her bad days, more than she was on the surface? Should anyone be defined by their worst traits?

"Go away," a voice called from behind the door, causing the boy to blink harshly in a state of shock. "I mean it."

"No," Sangyeon stood his ground, gulping as he stood a little straighter. "I need to talk to you."

"No," Hwayoung mocked his tone of voice, looking at him through the peephole. "You need to do better than that."

She watched as he pursed his lips closed, yet she couldn't tell if he was angry. Through this lens, he truthfully just looked a little funny, causing her to laugh.

"You're right, I do," he nodded, the girl watching as his head grew bigger with each movement, only causing her to laugh louder. "What's so funny?"

"You should see yourself right now," she replied, sucking in a deep breath to stop herself from laughing.

The boy glanced up at the small reflective hole in the door, realisation hitting as he faked a smile. "Funny. Now can we talk?"

"You can talk," Hwayoung nodded as though the boy could even see her. "I'll listen. That's how men prefer it, isn't it?"

Sangyeon stayed quiet, shuffling awkwardly from side to side as his patience wore thin. He had a feeling that would happen more than once today, so he kept his calm, remembering his friends words and genuine eyes.

The girl rolled her eyes as she opened the door harshly, glancing at the boy who looked at her innocently, as though the word 'bitch' or a curse word had never left his mouth in twenty three years.

"Chivalry isn't dead," Hwayoung joked lazily as she opened the door further, motioning for the boy to walk through as he rolled his eyes.

She watched as he sat down on the same spot as last time, sitting exactly where she once did too. "I'm here to apologise."

"Good, I'm glad it wasn't for anything else," the girl nodded, the boy glaring at her ever so slightly as she joked. The sense of de ja vu kicked in, remembering how he said the exact same words the last time he was here. "So, what exactly are you sorry for?"

"Don't make me repeat it," he tutted, shaking his head as the girl let out a breathy sarcastic chuckle. "You think I'm proud of it?"

Hwayoung leaned forward in her seat, challenging the boy. "Proud of what?"

The boy muttered, shaking his head as he looked down. "Calling you a bitch, it was shameful of me."

"Ah, it didn't hurt me," she shrugged as the boy glanced up at her through his eyebrows. His face and body language remained weary. "I know what I am and what I'm not, and I don't value men's opinions - so it didn't hurt."

Sangyeon chuckled lightly to himself. Her response was so typical, yet the whole conversation seemed unpredictable. How did she do it? "I'm glad I never hurt your feelings."

"You're only glad because if I was hurt, you would have felt worse about it," the girl argued back with a gentle voice. "And that's not because you're a man, you're simply human."

"Can I ever prove how bad it makes me feel that I even said those words in the first place, regardless of how hurt you are?" The boy quizzed, the guilt never seeming to leave him.

"You can manage your anger better," she shrugged. "Has anyone ever suggested that?"

His mind cast back to his outbursts in the apartment, the boys fearing whether or not telling the boy to control himself better was the right thing to do. None of them wanted to disrespect them, but he remembered who approached him bravely and respectfully. "Yeah, they have."

"I can guess who," Hwayoung chuckled at the thought of Jacob and his wise words. "Well, I guess it didn't work."

"Do you doubt my friends abilities, or my ability to change?" He joked, relaxing more against the couch.

"I don't doubt him, maybe I doubt you," she shrugged. "But then again, I don't know you."

"Well," Sangyeon nodded, taking in a deep breath as he thought of their only thing in common. The boy who had much faith, for whatever reason, in the dangerous girl who sat before him. "Get to know me."

The girl remained hesitant and reluctant throughout the day, watching as the boy made himself slightly more comfortable in her home.

It was strange, but when she glanced at her phone screen to see a text from Jacob ensuring that his friends apology was genuine and was done on his own accord - she let him stay. For Jacob, she thought.

"This is really the show you picked?" Hwayoung asked with a scoff, watching as the boy put on his shoes. "And you're leaving me to watch it?"

"You'll enjoy it," Sangyeon shrugged, chuckling at the girls expression. "Trust me."

"That's the thing, I don't," the girl said, turning back to look at the television as the boy simply watched on.

He smiled to himself at the thought of how happy Jacob would be if he was here. They didn't get on the best, but he was right, she was decent enough to forgive him - even if he didn't deserve it. And that was enough to make him smile even more, knocking himself out of it when she turned to look at him.

"Are you going or not?" Hwayoung asked, the boy nodding as he headed towards the door. "Bye."

"I'll be back!" He shouted, causing the girl to shoot up in confusion. Did he mean generally, or today?

Either way, the girl found herself watching his recommended show, her eyes focused on the screen for so long that she barely noticed half an hour go by or the boy returning from his trip. "Why can I smell food?"

"I would've cooked, but that might have been intrusive," Sangyeon shrugged, placing the bag before her. "I hope you like it."

Hwayoung looked at the boy wearily, picking up the bag before her eyes diverted towards him again. "Why are you doing this?"

"Because I have to prove myself, don't I?" He asked, opening his own bag as the girl looked on. "And I'm hungry."

The girl let out a loud chuckle, one which caused the boy to glance up and catch the most genuine smile he had seen upon her face ever since the day he met her. He watched as her eyes lit up when she opened the packaging. "Beef? How did you know it was my favourite?"

"I find out everything, remember?" Sangyeon joked, tucking into his food as the girl shrugged knowingly. "Enjoy."

"Oh, I will," Hwayoung nodded enthusiastically as she took the first bite, a satisfied groan leaving her mouth.

The two sat in a somewhat comfortable silence as the programme played in the background, happily eating their food as though they were simply something other than relative strangers who sat in each other's company despite their differences.

The girl glanced at her phone, noticing the time was ticking by. "Well, look at that. It's my bed time."

"Is it?" Sangyeon asked, bringing up his watch as he squinted his eyes. "Or do you just want rid of me?"

"How about both?" Hwayoung tilted her head, the boy nodding in defeat as he put his leftovers into a bag. "You can leave, I'll sort it out by myself."

"Chivalry isn't dead," the boy echoed her words, continuing to clean as the girl chuckled at him. "At least this time you appreciate my help."

"Don't get used to it," she replied, standing up as the boy stood before her. "I won't be watching the rest of your show, by the way."

Sangyeon shrugged, walking towards the door as she followed. "No skin off my back."

Hwayoung laughed, opening the door for him as he walked through without hesitation. "Thanks for the food. I'll pass on to Jacob so I can pay you back."

The boy motioned with his hands, hearing the girl argue with him although he simply blocked it out. He watched as she shook her head, a sea of explanations as to why she would never let a man pay for her food, something that he did in fact expect to hear from her.

He found himself smiling as he shook his head back at her, only to see her grow more agitated. "I'll only let you pay if you accept my apology."

"Not quite yet," Hwayoung shrugged, leaning her head against the door frame as she watched the boy shrug, turning away as he left the argument lingering in the air. "But I won't take freebies from anyone, especially you."

The boy chuckled, turning back over his shoulder as the two stood in silence for a moment longer. "Hwayoung?"

"Mhm?" She hummed, her voice finally quietening.

"I wish I could take it back," Sangyeon said, and for once, she noticed his eyes were true. "You're decent."

The girl let out a shocked laugh, a cheeky smile spreading across the boys face. "Just decent?"

"We'll see," he nodded, his foot on the first stair. "Bye, Hwayoung."
