chapter ten

The girl stared at her apartment walls, the same four walls that she had stared at for what felt like weeks now.

Although it had only been maybe a week, the torture she had felt was immense, albeit self inflicted.

She chose to stay here, she chose to isolate herself from the reality she was facing.

But her isolation made no difference. She had no one, a day like this was a normal day in her life, except she would be sitting here texting Jacob and organising their plans for the night.

Her first friend in over five years was gone, and she couldn't help but feel sad about it whether she believed he was true or not.

The boy acted no different. Cooped up in his room with barely any motivation to do anything other than work, his lack of ability to do more than sleep all day was noticeable to the boys.

"You wouldn't let your best friend go to a cafe on his own," Kevin pouted as he sat at the edge of the boys bed. "Would you?"

"I'm about to," Jacob muttered, pulling the covers further over his head. "Have fun."

The boy sighed, glancing towards the door as he had no choice but to leave. He could argue, but it was no use.

He walked through to the living room, everyone having hopeful eyes just to be let down when he closed the bedroom door behind him.

"He can't go on like this," the youngest shook his head, sadness in his voice. "He can't go back to this."

"It's his way of coping," Changmin defended as some of the others nodded with him. "All we can do is let him heal on his own."

Juyeon shuffled awkwardly as he stood by another doorframe. His mind casted back to the look on the boys face and the look on hers.

As much as the thought of the girl and her attitude initially angered him, besides her knowing that little too much - he sympathised with them both.

And as he looked around the room, he knew Jacob didn't have to heal on his own. "Sangyeon, what are you doing about this?"

"I'm figuring it out," the leader half-lied as he looked up at the others. "Trust me, I'll fix things."

"What did you say to her?" Sunwoo asked as the room fell silent, Haknyeon giving him the eyes as though to stop him. "What? We don't know anything about it."

"I simply found out about her," Sangyeon replied briefly. "I let her know what I knew, and she assumed that Jacob had aided the process."

The red haired boy nodded slowly, piecing everything together. "I didn't realise they were that close."

"Why do you think he hasn't left his room in a week?" Chanhee answered back, shaking his head as he tutted. "Idiot."

The boys chuckled as the two began to play fight, yet Sangyeon stared into space as he reconsidered his plan.

Maybe it wasn't the best one. Maybe he would get punched, and he knew it would surely hurt hard, but his heart told him it was the right thing to do.

The leader shuffled nervously outside the doorway, preparing himself for the hard hit that would surely come.

"You've had worse," Sangyeon muttered to himself, raising his hand to chap on the door.

Yet the sound of his knuckle connecting with the hardwood never come, instead it was left lingering as the door already opened before him.

She stood there, her once lively eyes were dimmed, her frame lazy. "What are you doing here?"

"To apologise," the boy said truthfully, taken aback by her seeming carelessness. "If that's alright."

"I don't need an apology from you," Hwayoung replied, leaning against the doorframe as the boy stood there awkwardly, his nerves clearly not stalling. "Do you want to come in?"

His eyes widened at her question, only for his face to be more shocked when she moved aside, leaning her frame against the doorway.

"Are you sure?" He asked, the girl lazily humming in response.

With that, he cautiously walked past her, his eyes skimming her apartment before he stalled, unsure of where to go.

Nudging past the boy, Hwayoung walked towards the living room, throwing herself onto the couch as she crossed her legs beneath her, her back lying against the leather.

He noticed how tidy her apartment was, and he truthfully didn't expect any less. "You have a nice place."

"I know," she nodded, watching as the leader sat down awkwardly on the edge of her other couch. "Just sit comfortably. If you don't, it makes you look on edge, quite literally."

"I'm not," Sangyeon denied, sitting down fully now. "This won't take long."

"Good," Hwayoung answered simply, the boy gulping as he looked around the room awkwardly. "This is the part where you tell me what you're doing here."

The boy nodded, the words he had hoped to say once fleeing from his head. "Well, I-"

"Better so," the girl interfered, furrowing her eyebrows. "How did you even find out where I live?"

"I guessed you were nearby, since I followed you that night," he shrugged, shuffling awkwardly in his seat either out of discomfort or the lack of comfortability in the situation. "I did a few checks, and here I am."

"I won't question you anymore," Hwayoung lightly chuckled. "I don't have the energy."

Sangyeon nodded, glancing over at the girl who sat staring into space, wondering what the thoughts behind her eyes were.

Her hair was curly and somewhat matted, her eyes droopy as her clothes hung loosely on her frame. "Do you want some water?"

"Huh?" The boy broke his stare, looking over towards the window as the girl looked at him. She had surely caught him, but she had no energy to point it out. "I'm okay, thanks."

"Okay then," she shrugged, stretching her arms as the two sat in a longer silence. "Can we get this over and done with?"

"Do you have better plans?" Sangyeon joked, the girl putting on a fake smile as he sucked in a deep breath. "I'm here to tell you what really happened, and why you should talk to Jacob."

Hwayoung scoffed lightly, shaking her head as she waited for him to continue.

She could argue, but the nights she had spent awake at the mere thought of losing the boy for good were enough to remind her that all she could do was listen. "Go on."

"Jacob didn't tell me anything," Sangyeon admitted, the girl glancing over as though she didn't quite believe it. "He didn't, I swear. I asked him, yet when he didn't tell me anything, I took things into my own hands."

The girl nodded, smiling lightly to herself before wiping it from her face. "It's more than that, you know."

"What do you mean?" The leader tilted his head, his elbows resting upon his knees.

"He lied to me," Hwayoung noted, nodding as she remembered the nights he told her his friends never made an effort to see him. They were always there. "I trusted him with things, yet he couldn't tell me the truth."

"I understand," Sangyeon sympathised. "But he's torn up, I wouldn't be here if he wasn't. He hasn't left his room in over a week."

"Neither have I," the girl shrugged, almost chuckling to herself at the state she found herself in now. "Why couldn't you just leave me alone?"

The boy gulped, the girls voice was sadder than he had ever heard it, and again - he found himself riddled with guilt. "I don't know."

Hwayoung nodded again, laying back in her seat as she thought about everything.

Could she really blame him? A leader like himself seeing the things she had done, she guessed that would be somewhat intriguing, and threatening to someone like himself.

For someone who could read emotions fairly well yet was cautious when faced with a man, she noticed the boy glancing towards the wall, his eyes narrowed in concentration, his expression laced with guilt.

And for the first time in a week, the girl felt a strange comfort in knowing she wasn't the only one who felt bad about the whole situation.

She examined the boys face, a small smile coming to her lips. "Are you really that scared of me?"

"Shut up," Sangyeon half-glared, his eyes narrowing further as he chuckled, the two laughing together softly. "After today, I'm certainly not."

"Oh, a flicker of emotion shows my vulnerability," the girl says mockingly, his laugh erupting again. "My weakness."

"I thought you were void of any human emotion," he shrugged, his cocky smile only causing the girl to feel more challenged. "Am I wrong?"

"Apparently so," Hwayoung motioned to her body, tugging her fingers through her hair which only got caught every so often. "I thought the same of you."

"Well, you're wrong," Sangyeon said with a pursed smile, patting his knees as he went to stand up. "I'll be on my way, then."

The girl nodded, watching as the boy walked towards the door, slowly get surely. "Thank you, by the way."

"You'll talk to him, right?" The leader somewhat pleaded, his eyes softening as the girl gave him a half hearted smile. "You promise?"

"Someone's desperate," the girl chuckled, standing up as she offered her pinky, the boy looking at it with a disgusted yet amused expression. "I'm not asking for a hug, Sangyeon."

"I'm glad, because I wouldn't hug you, Hwayoung," he raised his eyebrows, reluctantly offering his pinky to the girl which she hooked quickly before detaching them. "Keep your promise."

The girl nodded, watching as he walked towards the front door, turning to raise his eyebrows again as though to remind her, to let her know he was counting on her.

She smiled to herself, thinking of the boy who maybe didn't betray her, who was just simply dishonest. "Sangyeon?"

"Hmm?" The boy hummed, turning as he got to the stairs.

"I take it back," she shrugged, the boy looking on in confusion. "You're a decent leader."

"Just decent?" He joked, Hwayoung chuckling to herself as she nodded. "I'll take it."
