chapter eight
Her confession to the man was one which brought her panic.
The words rolled off her tongue so easily without a regard for the consequences that could bare upon her. She spoke no word of a lie, and that much terrified her.
The thought of living a life with regret over the things she had said and done was not a life she wanted to live. She had done much up until this point, what was the use in regretting now?
Instead, she did what she knew she was capable of doing, and did some research of her own - starting with no other than Eric Sohn.
Under his name came multiple others, although she had grown used to seeing ten boys, her findings only resulted in five.
She glanced over the photos of Eric she could find, which were all candid. Photos of him where his face was either fully showing and completely delusional to the picture being taken, or covered by a mask - which she assumed was most days.
"Pretty boy," Hwayoung muttered a pet name for him, her eyes skimming his profile. "He must be youngest on his team."
The details of his included words and cryptic messages that suggested he was an attacker, yet she remembered him whimpering when she held him underneath her. Although, it did seem to explain his eyes following her every move.
"You wouldn't have attacked me, would you, pretty boy?" She jokingly pouted at the screen, scrolling further down the page.
Next she saw the profile of the second youngest, a boy who looked so innocent and sweet in his pictures yet exuded a mysterious vibe.
He dressed darkly, his tousled hair always seeming to fall over his face. "Kim Sunwoo, a man of mystery, are you?"
A quick check confirmed that he was often paired alongside their leader, his position within his little gang quite literally being the right hand man and of assistance to his 'superior'.
Her eyes skimmed over the record which claimed he had been responsible for the most deaths within the group, yet did not explicitly mention the words 'killed' nor 'murdered'.
"Intriguing," she muttered, scrolling further down before her eyes widened slightly. "How come I never saw you?"
Her eyes skimmed over the profile of Lee Juyeon, the pictures of him were somewhat breathtaking, his eyes piercing into the camera most of the time.
Hwayoung almost felt as though they were staring into her soul, as realisation hit that he would easily be the most identifiable within the group.
Yet as she scrolled down, he was in fact the 'most wanted'.
It all began to make sense, she never once locked eyes with him. He was always there, but the others done that well of a job - you would never see him. "Interesting."
Next in the system was Ji Changmin, a boy that the girl did in fact remember. His claims that he would stick up for his leader were confirmed by the information presented.
He was often skilfully used as some form of 'bait' in their missions, Hwayoung couldn't help but wonder if he was really that friendly or fearless.
He was labelled as the one who always gets away, the one who always starts the trouble - yet is no where to be seen when it finishes. "You and Sunwoo must be a good team, then."
Her eyes lit up at the sight of the boy who was all too familiar, his strong frame being the first tell tale in the photo despite his face being covered.
Their leader, Lee Sangyeon. The one who surprisingly wasn't the most wanted was the one who had the least information on his profile.
His stance above the other boys showed his superiority, and that was all Hwayoung needed to know about the boy, besides the fact that he appeared to be the oldest.
She pondered to herself what her next move would be, if any.
She just knew in the mean time, she would do her upmost to stray clear of them, and that meant avoiding the club.
Her absence did not go unnoticed by the boys. It had been almost four weeks since they last saw the girl, and all of them questioned her absence apart from two - Sangyeon and Jacob.
The incident in the alleyway was one which the leader found himself thinking about often. Just who has she killed, and why?
Her records were flimsy and lacked depth, the only valuable information being pointers towards her violence involving men and her crime lord father.
"What if she got into trouble?" Eric pondered, the other boys nodding in agreement as they sat gathered around the table at the bar.
"She won't have," Sangyeon said confidently, taking a sip of his drink whilst the others glanced at him questionably. How could he be so sure? "It's been weeks, can't we forget about her?"
Juyeon scoffed, sitting back on his chair. "After what we saw in her? Can we really just let that go?"
"We have no choice," the leader affirmed, shaking his head. "Let her do her thing, she isn't causing us trouble anymore."
Silence over took the table, some boys nodding in agreement whilst others still found themselves looking for her.
Jacob, however, kept himself to himself as he was confident the girl was safe. He would know, he saw her every night - still holding on to that friendship that never faltered.
Whilst they sat together in their usual spot, he asked her why she wasn't coming to the bar at the weekend.
"I need a break," Hwayoung lied, avoiding the boys eyes. "After the last time, maybe it's best I stay away for a while."
He couldn't claim this was a lie, or refuse to believe her. He could sense that she was on edge about the whole situation.
Maybe it was because she exposed herself to him, or maybe trouble had found it's way to her from the man who lay bloodied and bruised in the alleyway.
Either way, they still talked until the sun came up. He learned more about her with each passing night, and even though he knew the dangers of being outside 'unsupervised', he continued to do it.
A friend in her was a friend that was rare, and the boy felt special having someone take a chance on him.
"Tell me Jacob," she asked him as she let out a breath, watching it travel in a cloud in the cold morning air. Her eyes were filled with this strange childlike wonder, as though it was her first time seeing such a thing. "Have you ever been in love?"
"I have," he recalled how he admitted it so easily, looking up at the stars as did she. "I still very much am."
Hwayoung glanced over at the boy who stared helplessly at the sky. "Why aren't you with them?"
"She's gone," his voice was sad, yet he smiled briefly at the end of his short sentence. "I never stopped loving her, though."
The boy stared into space in the club as he remembered his confession to the girl who had told him so much. It only felt right.
Kevin nudged the boy, furrowing his eyebrows. "What's wrong with you?"
"Nothing," Jacob lied, reaching for his drink as he practically flung it down his throat. "I need another one."
His best friend simply nodded, standing up with him as they walked to the bar. He noticed the blondes posture was different, he slumped when he walked and carried himself so lazily.
It was then he knew that he was thinking too much about someone specifically. "Hey, you wanna talk about it?"
"No," Jacob answered bluntly, shaking his head when the guilt washed over him. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to snap at you."
"You don't ever need to apologise to me," Kevin said truthfully, patting the boys back. "Only apologise if you don't take these shots with me."
The boy chuckled lazily, watching as Kevin ordered the drinks and pulled them towards the two.
He glanced at the alcohol, remembering the last time he properly drank. The last time where the girl he had bonded so well with saved him from trouble and put herself into it.
He gulped at the mere thought. What if it had ended badly for her, would he have forgiven himself for simply allowing her to attack on her own?
"Hey, let's do this," his best friend nudged him, placing the shot in his hand as he looked wearily at it. "Come on, I didn't raise you to be like this."
With a genuine chuckle, the boy nodded. "Cheers."
The taste was grim and eye watering, both of the boys raising a hand to their mouths as though they would be sick at any moment.
Kevin shrugged it off easier than the boy who sat still for a moment, contemplating if the shot was a good idea. "Don't be sick, please."
"I won't," Jacob reassured with watery eyes and a chuckle. "You didn't raise me this way."
His best friend nodded proudly, the continuing to drink before heading back to the table.
"Shots without us?" Haknyeon piped up from within the crowd of boys, shaking his head as Kevin shrugged at them. "I'll remember that for next time."
The boy rolled his eyes, sitting beside the blonde who still seemed shocked from the shot. "See what I care."
And as hard as Jacob tried, he found himself thinking about everything other than the night ahead of him. "I need to go to the bathroom."
The boy stood up quickly, taking himself away from the crowd as he walked away.
Upon his return, he walked slower, taking a few deep breaths before he would approach the table again. He felt so out of it tonight, and he couldn't place a finger on why.
"You're not working for once," a voice pulls him from his thoughts, turning to see the girl who he had been so worried about. "Are you free to party with me?"
Jacob simply stayed silent, pulling the girl gently towards him for a hug. He wasn't sure what came over him, he knew his sober state of mind would tell him to approach her with caution.
Yet when she wrapped her arms around him lazily, awkwardly patting his back, he felt safe. "You shouldn't drink your troubles away, Jacob."
"I'm not," he muttered, pulling away from her to rake a hand through her hair. "Can't I hug my friend?"
"You should ask permission first," she corrected him, the boy chuckling when he saw a smile upon her face. "But yes, you can. I can see you're sad, so be careful."
Jacob nodded, smiling weakly at the girl as she patted his arm, taking a sip of her drink.
"I'll be on my way," Hwayoung nodded, giving him a smile. "Text me if your friends can't party as well as me."
She turned, seeing a striking looking man appear from behind her, smiling at the boy that he made his way towards.
His piercing eyes and good looks were enough to remind the girl of the photos she had viewed weeks prior, the very photos of the boys she had pinned up against her own form of evidence board.
He was one of them, without a doubt. The more she glanced, she realised he was one whom she had never seen. Lee Juyeon.
"You're crazy walking off like that alone," the taller said to Jacob, pulling his arm yet the boy never nudged, his eyes glued to Hwayoung. "What?"
With a turn, he noticed the girl standing, her face somewhat horrified, yet somewhat sad.
"Shit," Juyeon muttered, lowering his head. He had believed that night, she surely would have seen him. "Let's go, Jacob."
The blonde simply watched as the girls eyes glossed over with tears, her breath shaky as she trembled, shaking her head.
"I trusted you," she spat, her words making Juyeon look on in confusion. "I should have known better."
