Chapter Twelve
James stood in front of the two paintings in his lounge room.
The Unfinished One and Forgotten One sat proudly side by side on the wall.
He folded his arms as he stared at the two paintings, he knew the stories that came attached and he was prepared for anything that was going to come from the two paintings.
"Sir."
James turned his attention to the butler by the entrance of the lounge room.
"Fred is here to see you."
James nodded slightly "Don't let him in here."
"Yes, Sir. I'll take him straight to the dining room."
James watched as his butler walked out of view before turning his attention to the paintings, his eyes couldn't see anything out of ordinary.
With impatience, he turned his back and made his way towards the dining room.
James noticed Fred inspecting the woven tapestry that hung over the walls "I wouldn't touch if I was you."
Fred jumped a little as he turned his attention around "Are you a history nerd?"
"Nerd?" James scoffed "Do I look like a nerd?"
"I mean..." Fred realised this may have been a bad idea.
"I know what you mean, No. My family are descendants of someone whose whatever." He shrugged a little "It pays to take notice of our history."
"What's this?" Fred pointed to a black feathered heeled encased in glass sitting in the middle of the table.
"It's a little joke." James dropped his eyes down the heel "No one in my family really knows how it started but it's sat here for as long as I can remember and probably as long as my father can remember."
"So, this is the original house?"
"For?"
"Deadsee. It's not a common name."
"We're not the Deadcull's." James gritted.
"I didn't suggest you were."
"Why are you here?" James folded his arms.
"Your artwork."
James listened.
"I want to know who your buyers are."
"No deal."
"Sorry?"
"My buyers are strictly anonymous."
"Then how do you know the artwork is for sale?"
"They contact me first and I wave a white flag."
"You may think this is a joke, James but some of those pieces I saw are stolen."
James listened.
"I can get the police involved."
"And I have money."
"I have friends in high places."
"Mr Tonio's dead."
"There's a new snake in town."
James rolled his eyes "The Ariovaldo's haven't been the head of anyone's families in almost a decade, I don't see them popping up any time soon."
Fred stared down James, he wasn't going to give up.
James couldn't help but burst out laughing "I don't care what game your cooking, but I'm not scared of some museum worker. My house is a museum of itself." He took a second to let his words soak in "Such a shame, I would've given you a history lesson too. Now get out of my house." His tone quickly turned threatening.
"This won't be the end." Fred threatened as he stormed out of James' house.
James smirked as he glanced down at the black feathered heel.
