Chapter Nine

"I heard his dead."

The words caught James' ear as he stood in the elevator.

"Some home break in gone wrong."

"Maybe his partner did it. Did you see that guy?"

James could feel his heart shake with fear as he watched the elevator doors open. He watched as several people stepped out.

"I doubt anything happened, James."

James glanced down at an older woman, he half-heartedly smiled.

"His a tough kid."

"Thanks, Sharon." Excluding his father, Sharon was the only other person who knew about his relationship with Dominic.

James watched as the elevator doors close, he reached in his pocket for his phone. He pulled open his phone contacts and scrolled through the number he still kept in his phone.

His eyes held tight on the name; he jolted slightly as the elevator doors opened again.

James rushed out of the elevator; he didn't care that his staff were watching him near run to his office. He didn't care how loud he slammed his office door; he didn't care about their reactions as he slide his office blinds down.

James took several deep breaths as he tried to figure out what he should do.

Call Dominic, see if his okay? Call Dominic, yell at him for not being at work? Call his father and see if Mr Eldridge could see if Dominic was okay.

Would Dominic be home? Which hospital would Dominic be at?

James stared down at his phone in his hands, he stared at the blank screen as he felt conflicted with emotions.

He plopped himself down in his office chair, he stared at the office phone.

James' hands shook as he reached for the office phone, he picked it up before working up the courage to dial the number he knew off by heart.

James could feel his heartbeat as he listened to the rings of the phone, he listened to the silence of his office to try to calm his nerves.

"He..ll..o.." It was struggle to speak.

"Dominic."

"Jam..es.." He breathed "I'm...so...r..ry..for..."

"Shh.. are you okay?"

"Fine." Dominic breathed.

"What happened?"

"No..th..in..g.."

"Are you at home?"

"Yea.."

"I'll come by."

"No."

"Dominic. This isn't a time to argue. I just want to make sure you're okay."

"Now you care." The words pained Dominic to speak.

"Shut up. I'm coming over. I just want to make sure you're okay."
