Chapter 10
It was him. Sergeant Joe. Even though he was dead, the expression of fear was still plastered to his face. There was a hole in his stomach- much bigger than a bullet hole- about the size of a man's fist. Dark, thick blood surrounded him making him appear even more pale. 'Oh' was all I could think.
Everyone stared at the dead body for a while trying to get our heads round what had happened. "The blood is still wet" Caitlin said breaking the silence, "he can't have been killed that long ago...". Just then an alarming high-pitched scream came from behind me. I spun around to see Ella with a large spike protruding from her chest. The spike came from a Kingbot.
Without even thinking I shot an arrow at the Kingbot's head hitting it precisely in between the eyes. It made some weird whirring noises before falling to the ground and it was no longer vibrating with electricity. I guessed that meant it was dead.
I was expecting the rest of the group to congratulate me on my kill but then I remembered about Ella. Holly knelt down hugging her and sobbed grievously while the others stood and mourned with their heads bowed.
I couldn't move. I felt as if I had already failed as a leader. Ella was only thirteen and the youngest out of us but the first to die. She was also one of the bravest but I barely even got the chance to get to know her.
It was unfair how she died. It was all unfair. But I had to accept the fact that war is unfair and we were at war.
But to win a war you have to keep going... So that was what we did.
Harvey searched Ella's pockets and found a crippled picture of her parents in a heart shaped locket. He carefully placed it around her neck.
"She's always liked the woods. We should leave her here where she will be happy" Holly sobbed. We all agreed and started to head back to the camp to tell everyone the unfortunate news.
