Chapter 23: A Letter From Home
-Mount Olympus-
"I want my daughter back now!" Demeter's echoed down the vast halls of Mount Olympus.
Zeus tried to reason with his enraged wife. "She's married now Demeter, you can't just take her back," said Zeus, he felt a fleeting exhaustion at his wife's efforts sweep over him even though he was immortal. "And she seems to be enjoying her life in the Underworld, why do you want to ruin that?"
"Enjoy!" Demeter screeched. "She's too young to even know the difference between fantasy and reality. I going to kill Hades for tainting my daughter."
"Demeter relax," cautioned Zeus. "Talk to our daughter first and she what she wants," advised the king of gods.
Demeter went silent and made a plan again, she was going to destroy whatever witchcraft spell was on her daughter and bring her back. No one knew that she was the one to send spies to attack Hades and kidnap Persephone from the Underworld, but that plan ended up in the gutter when Cerberus protected Hades. "I want her to come to here," said Demeter. "I will not be going to that wretched place," her voice was filled with disgust.
Zeus sighed at what the future held for Hades and Persephone, he had to inform them and warn Hades to prepare himself of Demeter's wrath.
"Zeus," a cool voice called out after Demeter left the court.
The slight rumble of a spectre hitting the marble floor alerted Zeus of who stood beside him. "Hera," he greeted his wife. "What brings you here?"
"It's hard to concentrate when Demeter is shouting all the time," remarked Hera.
"She's upset," said Zeus.
Hera crossed her arms. "About Persephone."
Zeus's blue eyes widened. "You know?"
"All of Olympus knows," she retorted. "Our little goddess turned out to have a backbone after all."
Zeus chuckled and felt pride in his heart for his daughter. "Everything will be fine once Demeter sees that Persephone is happy," he said as he looked down the bright skies outside the balcony.
Hera joined him. "Don't be so quick, Zeus," she said. "Demeter controls the harvest on your beloved Earth. If you don't control her soon, she might end up doing more harm than she already has."
Zeus knew Hera spoke the truth. "Hades is finally a little happy," he said. "I can't take Persephone away from him now."
"I wish Hades happiness as well," said Hera. "You might want to think of something and quick."
Zeus didn't waste any time before sending Hades a letter, he paced in his court and wondered what would come for this couple.
-Hades POV-
Hades woke up in an empty bed; his body knew before his mind that Seph wasn't beside him, he couldn't feel her warmth- that matched the season of spring comforting his cold body. He rolled out of bed and had just slipped some pants on, when he heard an eruption of comfortable giggles coming from outside the bedroom, his lips curved upward from hearing such a cheerful laughter coming from his one and only.
He strode out of their bedroom and spotted his wife seated on the floor with Cerberus, who was very content near the queen, his fluffy three heads laid on her lap and his tail wagged excitedly behind him.
Seph patted his heads and had the brightest smile while watching over Cerberus, her body was adorned in a sheer black night gown that stopped at her knees and had lace embroidery around her luscious breasts, her tousled fiery hair cascaded down her back and the tips kissed the floor, she was so tempting and gorgeous that Hades wanted to take her back to bed right this second, but she seemed to be enjoying herself too much, so he went to her instead.
His observant gaze spotted his mark inked across her abdomen, her wrists were faintly bruised like her neck, a wave of guilt swept over him because he had marked her so ruthlessly.
-Persephone's POV-
Persephone had the biggest scare of her life this morning, she woke up before Hades and had gone to the bathroom to freshen up, but all was forgotten when she saw her reflection. Never mind the bruises, she had an ebony mark on her hipbone; it was Hades mark. She was quite taken aback by it, but it kind of grew on her the more she examined it, she felt a sense that she was truly Hades now.
Everything was so beautiful right now, but something shivered down her spine when she remembered her mother, she tried not to think about Demeter but Persephone couldn't help it. Her whole life, she had been controlled by her mother and now she was finally happy and free. But that feeling scared her even more.
Persephone felt a pool of dread fill her gut that weighed heavier than iron, she had washed her face with cold water and left the bathroom to sit with Cerberus for a few moments. She was lost in time but was ripped out because she knew Hades had awakened, she looked up at him and it felt like a dream, he stalked towards her in just silk pants that hung low on his lean waist, his mighty chiseled chest was exposed for her admire- he was so beautiful it drove her crazy.
Hades sat next to her on the fur mat that she had to put in their room after she moved here, there were many things she had to add like the sofas, blinds even the chandeliers for some light.
"Hey," said Hades with so much mischief behind that grin.
"Good morning," she gave him chaste kiss on his cheek and stared into his loving eyes, but they soon got distracted by the grumbling hound.
Cerberus looked for Hades attention, he began to paw at Hades, abruptly the hound hit his nose under Hades chin, he knocked Hades back and the hound victoriously climbed on top of him. Persephone smiled at the hound's mischief that was just like his owner, they comfortably enjoyed their time with the cute hound.
Persephone sat with her back against Hades massive chest, he caged her between his open legs as Cerberus laid on her lap exhausted after playfully fighting with Hades.
"Sorry about yesterday," said Hades. "I probably scared you."
Persephone stiffened in his arms once hearing the guilt in his voice. "Oh, my dear husband," she sighed and snuggled closer. "You could never hurt me and I know that. And besides I was more excited than scared." She felt his smile at the crook of her neck as his forehead laid on her shoulder. "I got to see a side the darker side of you and that only intensified your beauty to me," said Persephone reassuringly. "You were dangerous, but I didn't feel fear. I felt safe and you know that's the reason why I came with you."
"Why did you come with me?" Hades asked.
"Because everything I knew about you was wrong," said Persephone. "Everyone at Olympus and Earth say how evil and dangerous you are. But when you came to me, you were kind, charming and calm. Something I only felt when I would be in my garden." Persephone took a deep breath and leaned into Hades arms. "I felt safe in these arms from the moment you caught me from that tree when we first met," said Persephone, she turned slightly and kissed his lips that was so sweet and caring.
"I have felt too Persephone, something that has never happened before," said Hades. "You bring such warmth and radiated serenity everywhere you went, and that was what brought me to you every day." His hand trailed down her bare arm. "I needed to feel your silky skin and hear your beautiful voice," he said, "and the smell of your scent was as alluring as your auburn hair blowing in the wind-" Hades moved her hair to the side and kissed her neck- "I wanted to understand how you were filled with so much emotion, but stayed so peaceful and happy," Hades whispered in her ear, "I wanted to share your happiness and keep you all to myself."
"You do have me all to yourself," said Persephone.
"Yes" said Hades. "Yes, I do."
Hades moved back and picked up his wife to go make love to her slowly and indulge himself in his wife's burning embrace.
"My King you have a message from your brother," said the messenger for the Underworld.
"Which one?" Hades asked while grabbing the piece of parchment.
"Zeus," she answered.
Hades motioned her away and read the letter alone, and once he read the content in this lonesome letter, he vanished from his office to go to his wife who was in the garden helping souls.
The guards moved to the side once the spotted who was walking through. Hades spotted Seph's light pink gown on the steps walking behind the four souls in front of her. Her long auburn hair was coiled like a rose on the crown of her head, and tiny silver jewels embellished the thick shiny mass. Seph's hips swayed like the petals that were falling off the flowers calmly around the whole garden. Hades had only entered the garden, when Seph paused on the steps and turned around to look at him, her eyes flashed bright with a hint of humour, it was such an intimate look and it was only for him, she quickly masked it when the witch near her called out for assistance. Hades loved how the intimate smile or gaze was only for him to witness, his heart ached but he had never felt happier.
Hades felt her shy smile pierce his heart as he flashed in front of her.
"I thought you were in court?" asked Seph.
"I was until I got a letter," said Hades. "From my brother, Zeus."
"Well, it's about time," said Seph.
She surprised Hades, he would have thought that she would be worried but she seemed more angry and annoyed, which made him laugh.
"What does it say?" She asked him.
They both walked up the path together.
"It says that your mother would like to meet you," said Hades.
She just nodded her head silently.
"In Olympus," said Hades.
A flicker of something he didn't recognize swept through her sweet honeysuckle eyes, she even gritted her teeth.
-Persephone's POV-
Persephone released a tired sigh not knowing what to do with the recent turn of events. Should she meet her mother or stay here? But Persephone knew her mother would never step foot in the Underworld. Although she wouldn't like to admit it, she did miss her mother a little bit. She wasn't able to say goodbye properly and that worried her mother terribly, so a little bit of guilt did cloud Persephone's judgment.
However, Persephone knew to be more cautious than that when it comes to her mother. Demeter would definitely find a way to keep her at Olympus, she just didn't know how her mother would do that.
"What do you think I should do?" She asked Hades.
"As much as I hate you leaving, I think you should go," said Hades. "Close that part of your life and help your mother accept your choice."
Persephone would love to do that, but her mother was really stubborn. "Come with me," said Persephone. "And I would love to show you where I lived and grew up."
Hades smiled and nodded in agreement for her, but when he pulled her into his embrace, he was also preparing for the worst.
-Hades POV-
Hades watched Seph as they walked silently to the Gates of the Underworld. Hades didn't tell his wife the rest of the letter. Zeus had warned Hades of Demeter's actions to separate them and advised him to feed Persephone fruits of the Underworld, so she would be fully bound to him. But Hades didn't want to forcefully feed her, he wanted it to be her choice.
"Are you ready?" Hades asked Seph who was oddly quiet this whole time, she merely nodded, but upon feeling her uneasiness Hades didn't open the door.
"I'm fine," she reassured. "Let's just get this over with." Seph gave him a small smile to reassure him, but he saw how it didn't reach her amber eyes.
Hades wanted to kill Demeter for giving her daughter such a hard time. They walked through the portal hand in hand to the gates of Olympus where Zeus and Demeter were waiting anxiously.
