Ch. 1
"This is what, the fifth time I've caught you doing something illegal this week?" A man asked, as he proceeded to hold a girl from her wrist, dragging her to the station; the cuffs clinking lightly as they knocked together.
"Well, you know you can just look the other way." The girl suggested with a shrug, but she was angry.
Her family was hungry. She was hungry. It was just a few hundred dollars.
"You can't keep doing this, Kimi. I'm holding off putting you in jail but every day it is getting harder. You have to stop." The man said, as he pushed her lightly into the cell, locking it shut.
"Well, Dazai, I don't particularly care. I'll get fed in jail." She grumbled back, sitting down against the back wall.
Dazai turned on his heel at that, leaning down as he narrowed his eyes.
"You know, the crimes your family has done is enough to get you executed, all four of you." He said, a small grin slipping onto his face.
Kimi flinched at that. "You wouldn't."
Dazai sighed. "Now here is where you are mistaken- I would. Your family has committed felony after felony, and it's getting to the point where I can't just keep locking you in a cell for a week and letting you go."
"I'll do anything." She said sharply, as Dazai raised an eyebrow.
"Anything?"
"Yes, anything." She said again, internally panicking.
Her family was the only thing she had left in this rotting city.
Dazai thought it over for a minute, before he unlocked the cell door.
"Come back here tomorrow. I reckon I could find you something to do. In the meantime, keep yourself and your brother out of trouble, I know how much of an idiot he is." He half scoffed, as Kimi happily ran out of there.
But as she got out into the freezing snow, the shivering hit her as she trudged along, finally finding her family's small apartment.
"I'm home!" She called out, as the all turned in unison.
"Did you get anything?" Her mother asked.
Kimi grinned, pulling the wallet from her pocket.
"Took it straight from the Osamu Dazai. I don't know how happy he's going to be, but meh. He's got plenty of cash we can use." She smiled, placing it down on the counter, as her Dad went to order them food before the card was cancelled.
That was their life.
Ever since she was young they had it tough: her parents used to be affiliated with a mafia group, and they owed them a lot of money, and instead of just ending them mercilessly, they stole everything. All the assets and money the family owned.
Kimi had known Dazai her whole life. They were friends once upon a time, but as he joined the detectives, a special forces unit at that, he changed, and she lost her best friend.
Now all he owes her is to keep her and her family straight, but he doesn't even owe her that anymore.
That's how she ended up in this situation, in front of the station the next day, as she wandered inside.
Dazai was waiting, as he waved lightly. "Ah, just who I was waiting to see! Started to think you had bailed on me, then I would have to go through with my threat y'know."
"That's the only reason I came." Kimi grumbled lightly, as Dazai turned and started walking, indicating for her to follow.
So she did, as he stopped inside an office, turning a board around.
It was covered in images and red string, which all reached to a blurry photo of one man.
"You see this man here? He is a horrible, heartless mafia leader, who basically runs Yokohama. We have sent every undercover possible and they have all ended up dead. He's strong, and great with knives." Dazai started to explain, looking at the girl beside him, who was pushing her bleach streaked hair out of her face as he was talking.
"This is where you come in. I want you to infiltrate his gang, and tell me everything you learn. And once you're done, I want you to kill him. It's quite simple isn't it?"
She turned to look at him, horrified. "Dazai, I take money from people and hurt them a bit if they hurt me. I don't kill."
He shrugged. "It's the blood of your family on your hands then. Or I'll send your brother in, and he's way more likely to fail than you, which will end up with him dead. This man, Ryunosuke Akutagawa, he doesn't play around. You fuck with him and you're dead, hence why I'm sending you. You're disposable."
"That's one way to talk about at old friend." Kimi sighed, before rolling her shoulders.
"Fine, I'm in. But whilst I'm doing this, you pay my family half your salary."
"That can be arranged."
"Good."
"Well first of all, we need to get you better clothes, and fix that horrible hair. You look like too much of an outcast my dear Kimi, and I can't having you being murdered on the first try, can I?"
