Epilogue: Snow and Roses
(Your POV)
"(Y/N), wake up, it's Christmas!"
I managed to struggle my eyes open to see the weight on my chest, and not really surprising anyone, the source of the weight was my wife, Ruby Rose. The two of us were currently residing in the cabin in Oregon I bought using money out of my own pocket, just so we can be closer to Tai. Our twins, Link and Zelda, both of whom were five, should be asleep in their rooms while Ruby and I slept in our shared room. Ruby was wearing a loose, long sleeve, black shirt paired with rose patterned pajama bottoms. As for me, I wore a simple dark blue tank top and anchor patterned pants. Even after we got married, Ruby never really grew up, she still remained the adorable, courageous, and energetic girl I first met.
"I'm up, I'm up." I sat up to be met with the usual energetic beam of Ruby, sometimes I forget that she's 25 because of this, not that I'm complaining. "Do you really have to wake me up every holiday?"
"Yup!" Ruby proudly exclaims, I would be mad, but the joy that was practically radiating off her and seemingly brightening the almost dark room made it difficult. "Come on, let's go open presents!"
"We have to wait for the kids to wake up, besides, isn't it their job to wake US up on Christmas and not their mother's?" I asked, slightly passive aggressively because I don't like being woken up earlier. "What time is it anyways?"
"It's only 6:22, it's not that early compared to how early you wake up to go to work." Ruby proceeded to lean close to my face and pinched both my cheeks. "Think of this as payback for always leaving for work and leaving me in the cold bed alone."
"I'm sorry about that, but I like to stay an informed ruler, and you're free to join me while I read the papers." I invited my wife, but she merely pouted, which is always an adorable sight to see.
"Yeah, but paperwork is so boring!" Ruby groans out loud. "I would much rather just wake up every morning to a cuddle session."
"I'm sorry for not being able to cuddle you in the mornings, so I hope this makes up for it." I planted a kiss on Ruby's cheek in hopes that it'll help, and it does because her face goes as red as her cape. "So back to the original subject, we're just gonna wait until our kids wake up before opening any presents."
"Fine..." Ruby agreed reluctantly while I snaked my arms around her waist and pulled her closer to me. "Wha-?"
"You said you like cuddling, and since no one bugs me on holidays, I have all the time in the world to shower you with affection." I decided to hug my wife with all the warmth in my cold body.
"Then I suppose waiting for Link and Zelda would be acceptable." Ruby tried acting high and mighty like Weiss normally does, but that contradicted her actions because Ruby was snuggling into my chest.
With that said, I laid back down and gently rubbed Ruby's back and enjoyed the stillness of the moment. The birds outside were chipping a song, Ruby's small and soft breaths, and the sound of the clock ticking were the only things that could be heard in the moment. The dark room was only illuminated by the morning sun but even then the light was blocked by curtains. The two of us just relaxed and let the morning silence consume both of us before I heard the sound of footsteps running towards the door of our bedroom. I gently shook Ruby awake since she fell asleep in my embrace, and it took a moment for her to wake up fully. Still, she woke up just as familiar blobs of blonde and black hair walked into the room.
"Mom, Dad, it's Christmas!" Our twin son, Link barged in, he inherited the blonde hair from my father and his eyes from me. "Wake up!"
"Link, they could be tired!" Our twin daughter, Zelda followed Link, she inherited her hair from her mother and her eyes from my mother. "Though I would like to see Yoshino and her boyfriend..."
"We're up, your mother was just as excited for today as you two were." I announced, getting a pouting expression from Ruby in response. "Rubes, you know it's true, don't lie."
"Fine, maybe I was excited." Ruby tried playing it cool in front of our kids, but neither of them believed their mother. "Now come on, let's see what they left us."
I watched as Ruby escorted our twins towards the living room and chuckled, watching as Ruby left her cloak behind on the hanger next to the door. I grabbed my phone off the nightstand and checked the notifications I got while I was cuddling Ruby. The first one was a notification that my daughter Yoshino was coming over with her boyfriend, Chaos. I grew to like the boy, so I approved of their relationship. The second notification was Mira, who opened a dojo after the war, letting me know her plane landed and she's taking a rental car towards our cabin. The final message was from Nel, which says she and Ile are currently at the cabin. I was confused by this, until I heard knocking at the front door.
I got up and out of the bed before tying my hair back into a ponytail using the mint green ribbon my father used to use to tie his hair. I walked towards the door, I grabbed a Ruby's cloak just in case as I walked out of the room. As I walked out, I almost passed by Ruby rushing past me to grab her cloak, but I wrapped it around her before I could fully pass her. She was confused for a moment as I walked past, with a smirk gracing my lips. I walked to the front door and opened it to be met with Ile and Nel, both of whom grew up right before me, now they were in their late teens.
"Merry Christmas, dad!" The king headed twins greeted me in total sync before enveloping me in a hug. "We missed you!"
"I missed you girls too, and I'm glad you're back from college." I returned the hug from my mint headed twins before letting go. "So how was your guys' flight?"
"It was cramped, so we just played smash bros the entire time." Ile answered me as I gestured for the two of them inside, allowing them to escape from the cold before I shut the door.
"Hey Ile, hey Nel!" Ruby greeted the twins with a hug, one that they returned at well. "I missed you two girls, your father can't keep up with my love of weapons, so I was desperate for someone to talk to."
"Like I said, I'm trying to make sure the kingdom doesn't fall apart!" I justified myself before hearing the doorbell ring, so I opened it again to see my adoptive daughter, Mira, wearing a business suit. "Yo, Mira, I'm glad you made it."
"Nice to see you again...Father." Mira went kind of red faced after calling me 'father' because she prefers calling me Sir (L/N) or something along those lines. "How was your time here?"
"It was pretty good, now you're free to come in and join us." I let Mira in, but before I could say anything more, I heard someone's voice ring out.
"Dad!" Yoshino flew in from the doorway and tackled me into a hug, as much as I was glad that my little rabbit was here, she still caught me off guard. "I missed you!"
"You surprised me, Yoshino." I brushed her hair as I watched a familiar boy with blonde hair walk in, it was Chaos, her fiancé. "I see you brought Chaos here too..."
"(Y/N), you need to stop acting like my dad." Ruby hugged me from behind and pulled at my cheek like a child. "I'm so glad you girls can make it today."
"We're glad to be here too, and we get to see our favorite siblings." Yoshino let go of me and hugged Zelda and Link. "So what's the plan for today?"
"We're gonna open some gifts to help keep the kiddos busy until tonight, then we go visit, Tai, along with the rest of my peerage and Ruby's old team." I informed my blue haired daughter as Chaos walked towards me.
"Greetings, Lord (Y/N) and former boss, it is an honor to see you." Chaos hasn't grown out of that chuunibyou way of talking, so I have no idea what Yoshino sees in him.
"I know I have been a king for a while, but I'd prefer it if you didn't use such lengthy titles." I rubbed the back of my neck. "Sure I may have killed god, but you all helped."
"Sorry, I'm just nervous." Chaos admitted, and my eyesight may have gotten worse since the final battle, but I could see the nervousness on Chaos' face. "You know, dating your daughter after all."
"Chaos, we've known each other since I've separated you and Butters with that device I made, I trust you." I informed my former pawn as I guided him to the living room. "However, if you hurt Yoshino in any way, I will order a manhunt on you."
"That's fair."
(Timeskip, brought to you by a snowflake floating by.)
After a full day of watching my kids play against each other in the newest Mario Kart game, we all got into our cars and drove towards Tai's house. The party was outside, so that everyone could actually fit. To combat the cold, Jihan made some arcane fire that blazed atop Hawaiian style torches, the kind you'd see in people's backyards. I wasn't the only one who got married to someone. Dawei and Mira, Jihan and a brown haired girl, Ethan and Sora, Mori and Sujin, Sung and a blonde woman, Seongcheol and Uma, Bam and Endorsi, Blake and Yang, and Joe and another blonde girl all got married. It was a nice reunion because all of us were busy setting up our lives after the war. Due to this party being outside, all of us were wearing winter clothes. I had on a plaid long sleeve shirt with a dark green scarf, paired up with jeans and snow boots. Ruby on the other hand was wearing a Santa outfit for seemingly no reason. Link and Zelda were both wearing snow jackets, pants, scarves, boots, and earmuffs.
"Hey guys." I greeted my old friends as Ruby and I walked towards the party holding some chicken and fried rice respectively. "I hope you didn't start the party without us."
"Of course we didn't." Tai walked out to greet us as the kids got out of the car to tackle their grandfather into the snow. "Ouch, hey kids watch the back!"
"Link, Zelda, be careful with your grandfather." I demanded as I helped Tai up whilst holding the fried rice with one hand. "He's gotten rather...fragile with his old age, hasn't he?"
"Excuse you?" Tai looked slightly offended as he got up from the snow and pretended to shrug off the snow that clearly went down his back. "I'm still in my prime, and don't you forget it!"
"Sure you are." Ruby commented sarcastically as Tai guided us all towards the backyard, where everyone else was chatting and checking out the presents on the table.
"Yo, (Y/N), Rubes!" Yang greeted me from the table she and Blake were sitting at, so Ruby and I walked over to her to make conversation. "How's life treating you two?"
"It's going as well as managing the world's largest kingdom can go." I took a seat in front of Blake whilst Ruby took a seat in front of Yang. "I'm lucky that I can take notes from Córdoba, thanks for that book by the way, Blake."
"No problem, I'm glad to help you out after everything all of us have been through." Blake smiled a bit as Yoshino and Chaos began a conversation with Kokushibo. "Still, hard to imagine all of...that happening just a couple years ago."
"It was a bizarre adventure to say the least." I chuckled a bit from my pun, but none of the other girls seemed to get it, so I changed the subject. "So where's Weiss, we sent her an invitation too?"
"She should be on her way, she just told us that it was difficult moving the Schnee Dust Company to Sylleblossom Alliance Territory." Blake explained as Ruby childishly laid her head on the cold table.
"It's just not a reunion without Weiss!" Ruby gently banged her hands against the table surface.
"This is just a Christmas party everyone is celebrating." I ruffled my wife's hair whilst chuckling. "Not just a reunion for you and your team."
"Yeah yeah, but we've been so busy managing the kingdom and taking care of the twins." Ruby justified the fact she wanted to have a small reunion with her teammates. "Besides, Weiss hasn't seen Link and Zelda since they were babies because she's been so busy."
With that, Ruby began ranting on about how good our kids are. That's not to say I'm not proud of them or anything, it's just that Ruby goes all in on proud mother complex, bragging about how Zelda picked up the sword and how Link is signing up for the competitive gaming team at his school. Now that supernatural beings like grimm were extinct and the SCP foundation containing the rest, our kids are free to become whatever their heart desires because the use of hunters is effectively gone. Speaking of which, that's why Blake became a librarian and Yang became an assistant at Sujin's dojo, teaching kids proper ways to punch things.
"You kind of remind me of Summer now." Yang remarked on Ruby's behavior, which was something I agree with. "Back when she was still with us, she always ranted about us to her friends, it was kind of embarrassing."
"Wha, really?" Ruby looks surprised, so I decided to back up Yang's statement with my own memories.
"Yeah, she even suggested I hurry up and marry at least one of you." I chuckled a bit, recalling my introduction to the huntress. "Still, she was a great person, even raising me like I was her own son when I stayed on the surface."
"Well I'm happy you took her advice." Ruby cheerfully leaned her head on my shoulder whilst grabbing onto my arm tightly, and I could have sworn I was going to lose circulation.
"I just wish I could have met her, due to me marrying her daughter and all." Blake commented slightly solemnly, it shouldn't come as a surprise that she never met Summer.
"I'm sure she would have loved to meet you, and you would have loved her almost as much as you love me." Yang wrapped her arm around Blake and kissed the girl on the cheek.
"I hope you guys didn't just invite me to show off each other's love life." A familiar heiress walked from behind us, looking tired from her flight.
"WEISS!" Ruby cheered before almost tackling the poor girl into the snow, but I managed to catch both of them in the nick of time. "We missed you!"
"It's obvious you did." Weiss was trying to put some distance between her and Ruby, so I helped her out by prying my wife off her. "I'm glad to see neither of you haven't changed all that much."
"We changed!" Ruby protested whilst gesturing to our twins, who were riding atop of Smough's shoulders. "We became responsible adults!"
"When did we do that?" I teased, making Ruby's proud facade crumble slightly. "We are basically adults who never grew up mentally and somehow had kids."
"Somehow I find it amazing that your household has not dissolved into complete and utter anarchy." Weiss looks genuinely surprised, but then again, this is Ruby and myself she's talking about.
"Trust me, I'm just as surprised as you are." I commented, causing my wife to pout adorably. "Ruby, don't pout, you know it's adorable and my heart can only melt 3 times a day."
"Hey guys, it's time for the game of secret Santa!" Tai shouted, getting all of our attention as he walked around with a hat full of numbers.
The game was simple, whoever had the lowest number got to go first. When it was our turn to get a gift, we could either get something from the gift table or can just steal from someone who went before you. Considering at least half of us were chaotic neutrals, it went as well as to be expected. Kokushibo went first and picked out the largest gift, which was the one I bought. When he cut it open, he was emotionless upon finding a crateful of Cold War Body pillows. Starrk went next to pick out the gift Ruby brought, finding that it was a M1 Garand. The list goes on, with the more interesting gifts being a rainbow skeleton from Jack, a hay bale from Anilla, a Danny Devito dakimakura from Jihan, and a book on dad jokes I got from Yang. John, the guy who got the rainbow skeleton, was confused by the gift choice.
"It's a corpse that hasn't told his family he's gay, he's a skeleton in the closet." Jack answered, and Yang started laughing because of how awful the joke was.
"Jack, please refrain from stupid humor in the first place." Kokushibo demanded as he pulled out a candy cane-like sword. "Or else, the cost of annoying Lord (Y/N) will be great."
"I'm a bad bitch, you can't kill me." Jack commented, and almost instantly, Jack's pumpkin head was knocked into a nearby pile of snow. "Okay wow, way to knock an official god of winter into the snow. Bitch."
"Oi, Jack, watch the language around the kids, they're four!" I demanded before scooping up some snow in my palm and threw it at Jack's head, causing the snow to melt because of the fire inside his head.
"Snowball fight!" Link shouted before jumping from behind another pile of snow and throwing two snowballs at me and Kokushibo, but the swordsman blocked the snowballs with his candy cane sword.
"Fear not Lord (Y/N), I will protect you and your beloved with my life." Kokushibo entered his serious mode as Jack picked his head up from the snow. "So long as I'm here, no snow will touch you."
"Fwoop." Yang threw some snow at my face, causing everyone at my table to laugh and Kokushibo to bow before me apologetically.
In response to this, I scooped some snow from a nearby pile and threw it at Yang's chest, not wanting to hit her hair. In response to this, we all began a snowball fight. Even Tai joined in, and almost threw out his back in the process. Kiibo avoided the snow by wearing an incredibly thick coat, but Anilla picked up a massive snowball that buried him in the cold substance. Ruby was much faster though, combining her semblance with the snowballs allowed her to dash around the area, launching snowballs in everyone's faces. The entire time she did, Ruby was laughing like she just reverted to the age of nine. Though that childish glee is the reason I fell in love with her in the first place. When she deactivated her semblance, Ruby crashed into my arms, almost knocking me over in the process. Despite both of us almost getting knocked into the snow, her laughter never faded, and I even joined her.
After some time of nonstop snowball fighting, Link and Zelda started to get tired out, and given how it was around the time they went to bed, we decided to let them rest in Tai's house. Tai was perfectly okay with this, and even offered to help carry them into the house, but our kids were rather small, so Ruby and I could carry them ourselves. I carried Link and Ruby carried Zelda as the two of us walked up to the stairs of Tai's house, Ruby suggested we let them rest in Ruby's old room. When we were younger, she shared a room with Yang, so there's two beds in her room. The two of us walked into Ruby's old room and we set Link and Zelda on the two beds in the room. Once our kids were in bed, we decided to look around the room.
"Looks like Tai didn't clear out the room much." Ruby commented as she sat on a chair that was next to a window, revealing the party outside, but the image was kind of fuzzy because of frost. "Hey (Y/N), thank you for going out with someone like me."
"Why are you thanking me?" I asked as I sat next to her and looked outside, watching as my old allies drank to their heart's content, knowing they'll have a massive hangover tomorrow. "I married the girl I fell in love with, so I should be the one thanking you."
"Yeah, but let's be honest here, I'm a socially awkward weapons nerd." Ruby pointed out as I grabbed a blanket and wrapped it around us after moving my chair closer to hers.
"Yeah and I'm a socially awkward gamer who's currently a streamer." I pointed out as the blanket's warmth covered both Ruby and I. "I know I may never end your insecurities, but I just hope you know that we'll be dealing with them together."
"Thanks (Y/N)." Ruby asked as she leaned her head on my shoulder, and I suddenly heard the sound of my own voice, and I looked at the source to see Ruby watching one of my videos. "Hey, remember making this video? It was one of your first ones."
"Oh yeah, I made that one when I was struggling to ask you out." I pointed out, since I recalled making the video, which was a playthrough of the first Borderlands game, and I played as Roland throughout the game. "I released that video around...eight years ago, but it feels like just yesterday I released that video."
"You were so good, you didn't die once the entire time!" Ruby pointed out with excitement as we watched the stream, and I saw an image of myself in the corner, I didn't really change all that much. "Kind of sucks that you're not really able to fight anymore, I miss those days."
"I can still fight, just not as well." I commented, and I wasn't wrong, but I was only able to use my relics, and I can use my Breath of Rain with Almighty. "Still, I doubt I'll ever reach the point where I was at my peak, but to be honest, I don't wanna relive those times."
"Why's that?" Ruby asked curiously as she looked at me with her adorable yet always curious silver eyes.
"Because back then, I was able to date you." I kissed my wife's forehead and she smiled a bit before closing her eyes to rest.
The snowfall combined with the faded lights outside evidently made Ruby tired, so she fell asleep. I grabbed her phone and turned it off to save the battery and leaned my head atop of Ruby's. I was happy and at peace with myself, but as I began to doze off myself, a pop-up suddenly appeared in front of me. I was confused by this, but I merely smiled at the pop-up's new look, which now had an image of my beloved as the background while (f/c) borders acted as a frame.
