Chapter 3

Yuuji was happy, he was restocking some boxes outside while Rin was on the phone with Yukio, he really was jealous of them. Having a happy and normal family, despite them being exorcists and all.

He never really got the point of being an exorcist. He fiddled with the box in his pocket once he finished packing up the boxes on the trolley. Turning around he grunted when something collided with his stomach. Looking down at the small child who had bumped into him, he smiled.

"You're the girl from the monastery! Hey kiddo---" he was interrupted by something digging into his pocket, the pocket that held the box he had been carrying around for a couple of weeks. "OI! Stop right there!!" Yuuji glared at the Goblin-looking monkey, noticing that it was holding a light pink scarf in it's other hand while carrying the box in the left.

The goblin yelped with a sneer and began to run into the store. Luckily Rin saw it too and ran inside with the girl following somewhat close behind.

Yuuji knocked into a few boxes of produced that he had just stacked up, growling in annoyance as he blew out through his nose and got back up to chase after the demon. After apologizing and bumping into a few more things, Yuuji caught sight of Demon running away from Rin and Yui, the little girl, "Get the hell back here!!"

Eventually he ran out of the store through the back, still chasing the demon. Following close behind into an alleyway, he tackled it and ripped the mahogany wooden box out from its hands. The goblin jumped on top of his shoulders as it ran away again laughing loudly.

The force of the demon jumping on him made him drop the box out of surprise, the cocoon-like item falling out of it. Groaning in disgust of the monkey-like goblin touching him, he rolled his now sore shoulders before turning his attention towards the chipped bandages loosening around the item. Yuuji scratched the back of his head, biting his bottom lip, "Dammit! This things isn't even mine..." he mumbled.

He had taken it from his School's yard, he originally wanted to keep it in the Occult Club that he was part of but eventually forgot about it and started to carry it around with him everywhere.

He picked at the bandages around it, gasping when it actually tore. And when it did, his blood ran cold. A gust of cold wind made goosebumps invade his arms and neck down to his toes. Shaking it off, he stuffed the item back into the mahogany box before grabbing ahold of the girl's scarf that was laying abandoned on the floor.

Yuuji and Rin were sitting alone in the park, staring off into space. They had been fired for disrupting the peace of the public and causing damage to personal property and the store's produce.

"I'm not even sure if I should be sad about this or not..." Yuuji mumbled under his breath, he was leaning back with his shoulder bag strap resting against his forehead.

Rin scoffed in response, the park that they were at was the one they were had beaten up those other teens for shooting the doves. Rin glanced over towards the quiet teenager, sighing slightly and right as he was about to talk, Yukio's voice cut through the air.

"I thought I might find you here," Yuuji and Rin glanced up at him but didn't respond, "the Sukiyaki will be all gone if we don't hurry back--"

"I wouldn't be able to face anyone there if I went home..." Rin trailed off, his expression contorting as he bit his bottom lip. Yuuji swung lightly in the swing he was resting on, the creaking sound was faint but enough to lift the awkward silence.

"What are you talking about?" the younger Okumura twin had a stern expression and knitted eyebrows.

"I got fired." Rin let out another deep sigh for the third time that night, keeping his eyes closed, "She said she couldn't have a violent thug like me in her store. Actually, me and Yuuji got fired at the same time." the older Okumura frowned deeply and tilted his head back to look up at the street lamp post, growling in irritation.

"What happened?" Yukio continued to press.

Yuuji stood from his swing, the creaking stopping, he lashed out slightly, "We don't even know!--"

"Don't give me that! Everyone was so happy that you'd found a job, Rin. So how could you--How could you drop the ball like that?!" Yukio took a second to breath, "You need to explain it so that it makes sense to everyone." Rin lifted his head towards his brother, sneering.

"Listen, there are things you can't understand even if you do explain them!" Rin's harsh but truthful words made Yukio gape at him, muttering his name. The black-haired twin sighed and turned his attention back to the ground, "Sorry..." he mumbled.

"Anyway," Yukio starts, "we should just head home. I know Dad's waiting."

And without another word, Rin stood to his feet and they left the park together. Leaving Yuuji behind as he quietly sat back down on the swing set and shifted his focus to the starless sky.

"Oi! Come on," Rin's bellowing comment made the teen hum and turn towards the two waiting brothers. "We're not waiting here all day," Yukio adds with a soft grin. Yuuji smiled and hopped up from the swing, gripping the pink scarf in his hand tighter.

"Yeah!"

When they had gotten back to the monastery, they saw Shiro and Yui's father talking to each other. Their attention being drawn away as Yui ran over to Yuuji with a shy smile. "Thank you for making that scary monster go away," she whispered, the light haired brunette smiled back wider and patted the girl on the head once he had crouched down to her height.

"No problem! I'm not an Exorcist like Father Fujimoto but I'm sure that no one else will bother you, especially that monkey-faced goblin--"

"Monkey-faced goblin?" Yui's father interrupted, making his way over to his daughter. Rin nodded to answer his question.

"Yeah! It's like this kid who's bullying her, he'll tug her hair and steal her stuff---"

"Someone is bullying my daughter!?" he interrupted again. Yuuji and Rin pout, Yui tugged on her father's coat, "It's nobody from my school!! It's the evil fairies!" Yui's small and sweet voice made Yuuji's heart throb, his eyes watering as she tried to convince her father.

"They come to my room at night, and make all sorts of mischief. These days they even do it outside the house..." Yui tried to explain, her tiny voice was bold but still not reaching her father.

He sighed and massaged his temple, "Yui is a child with a vivid imagination, you see--I've already heard such fairy tales from her countless times. Lately, it seems as if she can't distinguish her daydreams from real life..." Yuuji's fists tightened and he stomped up to the two.

"They're not just daydreams," he starts rudely, Yukio grabbed ahold of his shoulder with wide eyes. "Y-Yuuji--"

"Why can't you just believe her? Who's a kid supposed to rely on if her own parents won't believe her?!" Yuuji was stopped by Shiro smacking the back of his head harshly, sighing and making his way over to Yui's father with a deep bow as an apology.

"OUCH!! What was that for?!" he was left unanswered.

Shiro crouched to Yui's level, holding up a small corked off vial with a four-leaf clover inside.

"Here, this is a four-leaf clover charm. Just holding onto it will protect you from evil." his warm voice and gentle smile made everyone relax. "Than..thank you," Yui mumbled.

Shiro turned to the little girl's father, "I urge you not to reproach her daughter. There is no one else in the world she relies on as much as you, her own parents." he finished, her father sighed slightly and glanced at his daughter before turning back towards the gate.

"Let's go home, Yui."

Yuuji jogged up to them before they could leave, smiling down at Yui as he took out the scarf he had been hiding from behind his back, his goofy smile was contagious and spread onto Yui's and Rin's faces as the light-haired brunette wrapped it around her neck securely.

"If any more bad fairies come and try and get you, just come find me and I'll scare them all away! I'll be the one to save you again.." Yui hummed sweetly and hugged the teenager goodbye before leaving with her father. Leaving Shiro to scold Rin about the store.

'Save others, Yuuji.'

"I'll definitely save you.." Yuuji muttered out.
