Chapter 26
Going Home With Or Without You
In the aftermath of King Ramiro's departure, a sense of normalcy began to settle over the kingdom. With the allies having left, King Tae-Han became more relaxed, allowing Queen Asora to resume her duties beyond the confines of their chambers. However, Queen Asora couldn't shake off her concern regarding the rumors of a potential English threat to Jamaica. The weight of responsibility pressed upon her, compelling her to seek counsel from her Wisemen.
In the war room, they gathered to discuss the unsettling news. Queen Asora stood up and looked at everyone, "As you know I have received unsettling information from King Ramiro of Spain regarding rumors of the English planning to overtake our beloved country, Jamaica, once again. We cannot afford to underestimate this potential threat. Our people's safety and the stability of our kingdom are of utmost importance."
"Agreed," Wisemen Hugh started. "These rumors must not be taken lightly. It is crucial that we gather intelligence to ascertain the veracity of these claims and fortify our defenses accordingly. I suggest we send scouts to discreetly investigate any signs of English presence or activity."
Wisemen Tae-Jeong nodded in agreement, his voice resonating with determination. "Furthermore, we should bolster our alliances and establish closer communication with neighboring countries and potential allies. A united front will strengthen our position against any encroaching threats."
"To add to Hugh's point," Wisemen Judias added to the conversation, "I propose dispatching ships a day out into the ocean to scout for any approaching vessels."
Wismen Japh nodded in agreement before signing, "And Queen Asora, perhaps it would be wise for you to consider returning to Jamaica. Your presence there would bring stability and reassurance to our people during these uncertain times. It is essential that our kingdom remains united and strong, especially in the face of potential threats."
The others in the room nodded in agreement with their fellow wise men. However, Wisewoman Lydia raised her concern, displaying her loyalty and understanding of the delicate dynamics between Queen Asora and King Tae-Han.
"While I understand the need for your presence in our country Jamaica, Queen Asora," Wisewomen Lydia began. "We must also consider the feelings of King Tae-Han. You've only been married for a little over a week, leaving so soon after your wedding could cause him to feel neglected. It is essential to maintain the balance between your responsibilities as a queen and your commitment to being Queen here and his wife too."
Queen Asora furrowed her brow, pondering Lydia's words. She understood the delicate balance that needed to be struck, but the safety and well-being of her people remained her number one goal. "You raise a valid point, Lydia. I will take King Taehan's feelings into consideration. However, the safety of our kingdom and its people must remain our top priority. I will have to find a way to address both concerns, ensuring that our people are protected while also nurturing the bond with my husband and maintaining my responsibilities here."
The room fell into a reflective silence, each person acknowledging the complexity of the situation. "I think it is wise to bring Tae-Han into this meeting." The Queen said breaking the silence. "I know where I stand as Queen, I know where I stand as a wife, but I do not think he will understand this. And I need you all to help me explain this to him too because no matter how many days we have shared our bed as a couple, I will choose my people over him any day."
The Wisemen all shook their head in agreement, "Would you like me to go get him?" Wisemen Tae-Jeong asked.
The Queen nodded with a tired smile, "Yes, but I do not want his advisors here. Nothing they say will help him at the moment, especially if he disagrees with me."
"I don't think that's wise," Her uncle spoke up. "As much as I know where you are coming from, this requires transparency. Both the King and advisors need to hear from your lips where you stand. We all have to be on the same page."
"Fine," Queen sighed. "But if he is busy Tae-Jeong, tell him it is urgent and I am waiting. This will be talked about today."
"Yes, your majesty." And with that Wisemen Tae-Jeong quickly left the hall on his way to find the King.
Asora gently placed her head against the chair, "Not even a week into our union, and our relationship is already at odds."
Wisewomen Lydia sighed, "Remember Asora, you both are rulers to your own countries, these issues were bound to come. At least, we were informed about it the English so you get a chance to prepare."
"Exactly," Wisemen Judias agreed. "And if King Tae-Han does not support you, especially after all the things you have done and continue to do, then we know where we stand with him."
"Wouldn't be hilarious if I married an enemy?" The Queen chuckled with her eyes still closed, but no one laughed. Instead, they all followed the Queen and placed their heads against their chair, in both concern and frustration.
Wisemen Tae-Jeong toured through the courtyards looking for the King, and he couldn't find him for a while until he saw Advisor Daru walking to the doors towards the palace library. Immediately, he changed his course and followed, as he got to the doors from outside they were slid open by guards, and Tae-Jeong smiled slightly, the King was here.
He walked down the hallway until he saw another two sets of guards outside the sliding doors to the library. "May I go in?" Tae-Jeong asked the guards but no one said anything. So he stepped forward, but they all put a hand towards their swords, causing him to freeze.
He chuckled with slight agitation as he combed through his hair with his hand, he did not like to be threatened, "Did I not just ask you if I could go in or not?"
Someone chuckled behind him and he saw General Ki-Yong walking towards him with a smile, "Don't worry" He told the guards. "He's with me."
Immediately the guards stood straight, and Tae-Jeong followed the General not before scowling at both guards and muttering in English, "Nuh badda come try boost me up, see if mi nuh tump yuh inna yuh face."
"What did you say?" Ki-Yong asked Korean.
And immediately Tae-Jeong smiled, "I was just giving them a warm greeting."
Ki-Yong chuckled, "Right." He walked to the back of the room where the King stood reading something. "Wisemen Tae-Jeong is here."
King Taehan looked up from his reading, his eyes brightening as he greeted Tae-Jeong. "Ah, Tae-Jeong, it's good to see you today. What brings you here?"
Wiseman Tae-Jeong respectfully bowed before the king before answering. "I bring news from Queen Asora. She requests your presence, along with your advisors, at the Changdeokgung Hall in the war room. She is a little restless due to the rumors shared by King Ramiro of Spain, and she desires your insight and opinions on the matter."
King Tae-Han closed the book, setting it aside, his attention fully captured by Tae-Jeong's words. He understood the significance of the queen's distress. "I see. Thank you for informing me, Tae-Jeong. The Queen's restlessness is understandable given the circumstances. We shall make our way to the war room promptly."
Turning to Advisor Daru, who had been quietly listening in, King Tae-Han issued his instructions. "Daru, please find Advisor Jangsu and Advisor Do-Joon. Ask them to meet us at Changdeokgung Hall. And General Ki-Yong, accompany him so the advisors understand the seriousness."
Advisor Daru and General Ki-Yong nodded and quickly left the library to carry out their task. As King Tae-Han and Tae-Jeong walked toward the hall, Tae-Jeong took the opportunity to provide further insight into the Queen's state of mind.
"Queen Asora's restlessness regarding the English stems from a deeply personal place." Wisemen Tae-Jeong explained. "You see, her family was tragically killed when the English ruled over Jamaica. The wounds of that loss still haunt her, and she fears a potential resurgence of their threat. It is a painful memory that has shaped her perspective and fuels her determination to protect our kingdom."
King Tae-Han's expression turned grave as he absorbed the weight of Tae-Jeong's words. There was a lot he still did not know about the Queen, and this further proved his point. He felt guilty his wife was in emotional turmoil and didn't say anything to him.
Tae-Han cleared his throat, "I was not aware of the extent of her personal tragedy. Thank you for enlightening me, Tae-Jeong. I can only imagine the pain and anguish she carries within her. As her husband and ally, rest assure that I am committed to standing by her side and offering my unwavering support as she confronts the ghosts and enemies of the past."
All the advisors and wisemen, along with King Tae-Han and Queen Asora, gathered around the table in the war room, ready to address the pressing matter at hand. The Queen took a deep breath, her expression filled with a mix of determination and concern, as she began to explain the dilemma.
A silence settled over the room as the advisors and Wisemen absorbed the Queen's words. King Tae-Han, his brow furrowed, hadn't realized the length of time the Queen had been away from her homeland. Concern flickered in his eyes as he considered the implications. "I understand your desire to return to your people, Asora, but I must admit, I did not fully comprehend the extent of your absence." Tae-Han continued. "I have grown accustomed to your presence by my side, and the thought of you being so far away troubles me. However, I also recognize the importance of your connection with your homeland and the responsibility you have towards your people."
The Queen glanced at the King, appreciating his honesty and concern. But she also knew he wasn't completely okay with where this conversation was going. "How long do you intend to be away from Joseon, my Queen?"
Queen Asora maintained her composure, meeting the King's gaze with unwavering determination. "To properly address the matters in Jamaica, it would take approximately 12 weeks for the round trip. However, I believe it is essential for me to stay there for at least two months, ensuring that I can adequately tend to the needs of my people. In total, I estimate that I would be away for around six months."
A sense of annoyance and childishness crept into King Tae-Han's voice as he responded.
"Six months? That's far too long! You cannot be away from me and this kingdom for such an extended period!"
"My duty as a Queen extends beyond the borders of Joseon. I understand your concerns, my Husband, but the well-being and safety of my people must come first." Queen Asora, unyielding in her resolve, met the King's frustration but with maturity. "However, I do not wish to be separated from you for such a prolonged period. If you are willing to accompany me on this journey, I would be more than grateful to have your presence by my side."
The King's anger simmered beneath the surface, evident in his tightened jaw and furrowed brows. But deep down, he understood the weight of responsibility the Queen carried for her people. Reluctantly, he weighed his options. "Very well, if it means I can be with you, I will travel with you to Jamaica."
The advisors and General exchanged concerned glances as they processed the King's decision to accompany Queen Asora to Jamaica. They understood the magnitude of his absence and the challenges it would bring to the kingdom. However, they also recognized the unwavering commitment between the King and Queen and their shared responsibility for the well-being of their respective realms.
Advisor Do-Joon spoke up, his voice filled with both respect and caution. "Your Majesty, while we fully support your decision, we must consider the implications of your prolonged absence. The kingdom relies on your guidance and presence for stability and direction. We must make careful arrangements to ensure a smooth transition and the continuity of governance in your absence."
King Tae-Han, though resolute in his decision, acknowledged the concerns raised by his advisors and General. He understood the necessity for effective governance during his time away and the importance of leaving the kingdom in capable hands. "You are right, Advisor Do-Joon. We cannot allow the absence of the monarch to disrupt the kingdom's affairs. We shall work together to make suitable arrangements. This is why general Ki-Yong, I entrust you with maintaining order and security in my absence. Consult with the advisors and ensure that all necessary preparations are made."
General Ki-Yong's face held shock before composed himself and nodded, a sense of responsibility evident in his posture and demeanor. "Your Majesty, rest assured that I shall oversee the affairs of the kingdom in your absence. I will work closely with the advisors and ensure the smooth functioning of the government. Our primary focus will be on maintaining the security of the realm and addressing any issues that may arise."
Everyone in the room expressed their agreement and commitment to supporting General Ki-Yong in his role. They recognized the need for a cohesive and coordinated effort to maintain stability in the kingdom during the King's and Queen's absence in Joseon.
