Chapter 16
The Talk & Festivities
Wisewomen Lydia and Wisemen Hugh made their way to the Queen's Chamber, where they found Asora sitting at her vanity, lost in thought as she undid some of her braids to wear for the night of festivities. Her face brightened with a warm smile upon seeing her trusted companions entering the room.
"Good morning, Uncle Hugh, I didn't know Lydia was going to bring you," The Queen said. "Is there something you need?"
Wisewoman Lydia exchanged a nervous glance with Hugh before stepping forward. "Asora, we wanted to discuss something important with you," she began, choosing her words cautiously.
The Queen stopped undoing her braids and turned her attention fully to them, her eyes searching their faces for any signs of concern. "Of course, what is it?" she asked, her voice filled with genuine curiosity.
"It's about your relationship with King Tae-Han," Hugh spoke up gently, his voice tinged with a mix of concern and protective instinct. "You see, Asora, the road to love can be complex and filled with both joy and challenges."
Asora's smile waned slightly, a flicker of uncertainty crossing her features. "I... I understand," she replied, her voice betraying slight nervousness.
Lydia stepped closer, her eyes filled with empathy. "Asora, have you ever been in a romantic relationship before?" she asked softly.
The Queen's eyes widened, and a faint blush colored her brown cheeks. "No," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "Since becoming Queen, I've dedicated my life to serving our people, and before then I never allowed myself to explore such matters."
Wiseman Hugh offered a comforting smile. "It's completely understandable, Asora. You have been a beacon of strength and leadership for our nation. But with this newfound connection to King Tae-Han, there are certain aspects we believe you should be aware of."
Asora nodded, her expression becoming more serious. "Please, enlighten me," she requested, her curiosity tinged with a touch of apprehension.
Lydia took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts. "Intimacy is a beautiful and natural part of a loving relationship," she explained gently. "But it's crucial to approach it with caution and ensure that both parties are fully aware and consenting."
Asora's eyes widened, and she clasped her hands together, her fingers intertwining nervously. "I... I understand the concept of a relationship, I think, but I've never experienced the physical or emotional part of it," she admitted, her voice laced with a mix of curiosity and unease.
"And that's what we are a little concerned about it," Lydia said. "We're not sure if you are aware of how your body and emotion can start to affect your thinking when you are attracted to someone."
Hugh stepped closer, his voice filled with concern. "Asora, we just want to make sure you are fully aware of the implications and potential consequences if you jump to doing intimate things with the king," he emphasized. "It's important to prioritize your emotional well-being and ensure that any physical intimacy occurs at a time and in a way that feels right for you. However, we think it's best you pursue the intimacy part after marriage."
Asora blushed but also took a moment to absorb their words, her gaze shifting between her trusted companions. "Thank you," she said sincerely. "I appreciate your care and guidance because I have felt quite antsy and anxious about that, I've noticed since being here, around him, I feel flashes of heat around him, or my nose begins to sweat like when I lie Uncle Hugh, and I think it's because I'm nervous."
Wisewoman Lydia placed a reassuring hand on Asora's shoulder. "If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We want to support you in every way we can. And there is a book that I left under your pillow, um, I bought it back in Jamaica. I suggest you maybe look at it before getting married." Lydia gave a small wink, making Wisemen Hugh's face scrunch with disgust.
Touched by their unwavering support, Asora nodded gratefully. "I am grateful for your advice, and I will make sure to heed it." she expressed, her voice filled with genuine warmth.
The Wisemen and Wisewomen exchanged relieved smiles, reassured by Asora's understanding and gratitude. With their hearts filled with newfound understanding and determination, the duo left the Queen so she could continue getting ready for the festivities tonight.
When the door shut behind them, Asora sat alone in her chamber, her thoughts swirling with a mix of anticipation and caution. She understood the weight of the decisions she would have to make and the importance of navigating her newfound connection with King Tae-Han thoughtfully.
As the sun cast sunlight through her windows, Asora found comfort in the knowledge that she had a support system of trusted companions who would be there for her every step of the way.
Silently Asora whispered a silent prayer to herself. She prayed that she would have the strength and power to take her time, follow her instincts, and ensure that the love she shared with King Tae-Han was built on a foundation of trust, respect, and true understanding. And that her people's interest was always put ahead of hers no matter what.
Later that afternoon, the grand festival finally arrived, marking the union of the two nations and the celebration of love between Queen Asora and King Tae-Han. The courtyard was adorned with vibrant decorations, and lanterns casting a warm glow over the joyful crowd. The air was filled with the sounds of laughter, music, and the delightful aroma of various delicacies. As the festivities reached their peak, the news of the Queen's presence spread like wildfire throughout the village.
She was amongst them.
Whispers and murmurs of anticipation filled the air, and the crowd became abuzz with excitement as they caught their first glimpse of Queen Asora.
Asora, adorned in an exquisite yellow gown that shimmered under the glow of the lanterns, hugged her waist tight and flowed with a slightly puffy mermaid look that stopped right at her ankles. She had it made in France, and knew better than to have this expensive dress drag on the ground.
As she stepped out of the crowd and made her way toward the center of the courtyard, where the King stood waiting, his eyes fixed on her. The crowd hushed in reverence, their eyes fixed upon her radiant beauty. Gasps of awe escaped the lips of onlookers as they beheld the Queen's ethereal presence and foreign looks. Her heart fluttered with nervous excitement as she felt all eyes on her but specifically the man in front of her.
Tae-Han's gaze lingered on Asora, captivated by her radiant beauty. In the few days that she had been here, he never could get over how breathtaking she was, his heart swelled with pride.
This was going to be his queen.
The King stepped forward, offering Asora his arm. "You look absolutely lovely," he whispered, his voice filled with genuine admiration.
Asora blushed, feeling a mix of excitement and contentment. She rested her hand delicately on Tae-Han's arm, the touch sending a current of warmth through her. "Thank you," she replied. "You don't look too bad yourself."
The king wore a royal hanbok, a jacket-like piece with long, wide sleeves; and a high collar. He musk smelt like sandalwood and rosewood, it left her unknowingly leaning into him.
King Tae-Han turned to the crowd, "My fellow subjects..." Asora tried her best not to flinch, she didn't like that term. "... this is my soon to be wife, Queen Asora."
Queen Asora went on to add, "And to my people, my family, and friends this is to be my husband, and not only will I be Queen to Jamaica, but I also will stand beside King Tae-Han as the Queen of Joseon."
The crowd erupted in cheers and applause, their voices united in celebration of the union that promised prosperity and unity.
The couple began their procession through the festival, they met the many different villagers of both nations. At some points in the night, they danced with children to the rhythm of the music.
Asora's eyes shimmered with joy as she witnessed the genuine happiness radiating from the people around her. She made sure to thank her people in their mother tongue, thank you for taking the time to learn Hangul. She also felt a deep sense of responsibility and a renewed determination to serve both her people and King Tae-Hans people with unwavering dedication and equality.
The night continued to unfold with a series of enchanting performances, showcasing the culture and traditions of both nations. Dancers twirled gracefully, musicians played melodies that stirred the soul, and colorful fireworks illuminated the night sky, painting it with bursts of vibrant hues.
As the night wore on, the Wisemen stood watchful, keeping a careful eye on the King's every move. Their concern hadn't diminished, but they understood the importance of allowing the King and Queen to explore their bond.
Wiseman Japh walked up to the Queen, and couldn't help but smile at the sight before him. "Look at them, my Queen," He signed. "They see in you a beacon of hope and a symbol of unity. Your presence uplifts their spirits."
Meanwhile, the King stood beside Asora, a smile gracing his lips as he witnessed the adoration bestowed upon her. He was captivated by her presence, her grace, and the way she effortlessly commanded the love and respect of their people.
Wisewoman Lydia also walked over to the Queen, giving her a hug, which Asora gladly welcomed. "Remember, my Queen, the eyes of the kingdom are upon you," she said, her words a gentle reminder. "Lead with wisdom and discernment, for your actions shall shape the destiny of our people."
Asora nodded, acknowledging the weight of her responsibilities. As both her Wisemen and Wisewomen walked away, she felt someone clasping her hand, she to her side to see the King's hand in her, intertwining their fingers as they stood side by side.
"I am very proud of you and hopeful to what lies ahead," King Tae-Han smiled with pride, making the Queen's heart flutter she had never seen him smile like that.
She squeezed his hand in admiration, "And I as well." Amidst the music, cheers, and laughs the King and Queen basked in the euphoria of their little moment.
