Chapter 8

"Saadah no, you are insane," Maryam said laughing. She was on the phone with a friend. "Okay then, we will talk later insha Allah. Bye" She disconnected the call, then looked at Abdallah who had one of his legs on his seat, and was using his phone.

"Ya Abdallah, please try his number again." She pouted pushing her glasses up her nose. She was tired of waiting, and she didn't want to be miss baba because he won't stay long. They came here about 10 minutes ago, and have been waiting ever since. Just for Muhammad for come and collect something.

He dropped his leg and turned to her saying, "this is the fourth time you are asking me to call him and I did, and he told us he would be here soon, I'm also tired Wallahi."

She huffed in annoyance. She opened the mirror of the visor, and started applying the lip gloss she had in her hand. "I just don't be late, and I don't know what's taking him so long. Just to come out and collect a message."

Abdallah smiled, and looked at the entrance of habil cafe. Right at that instant, Muhammad walked out with a mimi beside him. "Oh, speak of the devil, and here he comes." Abdallah said, looking at maryam.

Maryam looked at the muhammad. He was wearing a smile as he said something to mimi, while his way to the car. Maryam then moved her gaze from muhammad to mimi, she had on a maroon floral material sown as a fitted gown. She was also smiling. She looked beautiful.

She quickly averted her gaze, and looked back to her phone. Abdallah rolled his window down, grabbed the hamper from the back seat, and placed it on his lap. "Maryam, isn't mimi your classmate?" Abdallah asked. "She was, but she changed schools."

He nodded his head in understanding, then shook his head smiling. Maryam looked at him suspiciously and said, "what is it? You look like you have something to say."

"It's just that she used to be in your school, you are supposed to be happy to see her but the moment you saw her, your face expression changed. So..." Maryam placed her palm on her forehead before looking at Mimi then back Abdallah. "We do not get along, i can't stand her at all. She is so fake."

Abdallah looked at her amusingly, clearly wanting to hear the rest of the story, but she kept quiet and turned to the window, away from them. She rest her head on the headrest. "It seems I'm not the only person that doesn't like her." He muttered under his breath.

Muhammad and mimi crossed the road, and made it to car. He lowered his body to the window and looked at Abdallah apologetically then at Maryam.

"You just had to make us wait, yeah?"Abdallah handed the hamper over to him. "I'm sorry," he muttered looking at Maryam. She tried to smile cheerfully. "Thank you so much." He sighed then looked at mimi who was standing behind him, wearing a small frown with her arms crossed. "You can smile now," he said, showing her the hamper. She grabbed it from his hand, and look inside of it before a smile of joy lit up her eager face.

"Thank you my love."
He nodded at her then looked back at them.

Abdallah noticed the way mimi was purposely ignoring them, so he decided to at least say something. "Hajiya mimi," he said with a mischievous smile. She plastered a fake smile as she looked at him, "Oh hy."

Muhammad's smile faded and his expression changed. Maryam who was also listening in on their conversation made a wry face shaking her head in disappointment. "Come on babe, let's go," she said pulling his arm.

He looked at Maryam before saying, "I'm sorry maryam for delaying your trip, and thank you."

"No it's fine, i would be able to catch baba if we leave now." He stepped back, and nodded. "Alright abdallah, carry on."

He bid them goodbye, and they left.

After they had left, Muhammad looked at Mimi and shook his head. He brought out his car key, and clicked the open button, before making his way there. "Babe..babe, are we leaving already?" Mimi asked trying to keep up with Muhammad's pace. He stopped and looked at her, "how.." he started, but stopped, shook his head and gave a painful smile before starting to walk to his car again. She continued to try and talk to him, but he didn't stop nor did he answer her.

He got in the car and locked it before mimi could reach the other side. He looked at her through the window, then brought out his phone and dialed her number. She picked it up almost immediately saying, "babe, whats wrong? Why isn't the door opening?" She asked, further trying to open the door.

"Can you get someone to come pick you up ?" He asked as he turns the car ignition on. A confused expression crossed her face as she looked up, "yes.. of course...but is something wrong? I mean why all of a sudden?"

He placed his hand on the steering wheel, and looked sideways then silently said, "Just..just get someone to come pick you up."

"Is something wrong ba.." She started anxiously, but was cut short when muhammad disconnected the call. He shoved his phone to the passenger seat. He glanced at her for the last time before taking off.

Maryam kept sighing looking out the window then at Abdullah whose face held a grin as he drove. "Seriously though, how are you not mad...at her?"

He looked at her, "I guess it because I'm used to it, it doesn't bother me anymore." Maryam stared at him wide eyed, "I am not surprised that she did not acknowledge me because i know how she is, but I thought at least she would have the decency to respect his family." Then she stopped and look at him in disbelief "but seriously yaa Abdallah, was she always like this? Ever since they started going out together?"

A slow smile came to his lips as he said, "at first no, when they were in the friends zone, she tried to be responsible. I mean she will call him and even ask to speak with ruslan, and when they meet up and I happen to be with him, she will try her best to get along with me. But i guess it was just for show, because a few weeks into their relationship she changed." Maryam shook her head as she listened to him. "That's typical Mimi wallah."

Then she kept quite and looked out the window for a moment, before she looked back at him and gave out a pathetic laugh. "Allah sarki ya Muhammad. May Allah(SWT) save him from the kinds of her."

"Amin, but I think he loves her regardless. Kodayake even if he doesn't we wouldn't know." He made a face. "Toh.. but honestly she doesn't deserve him, she is the total opposite of him. Allah ya taimaka."

"Amin. Alright, enough of the Mimi talk now. I actually have something i want to talk to you about." Maryam brought out her phone from her handbag and gave him a go ahead nod.

"You do know Madina right?" He asked as he take a turn for the right, driving slowly. She looked up at him, "of course i do, she is one of my favorite friends. Is something wrong?"

"Actually, we met at this dinner of a friend.."

"Dinner of a friend?" She asked grabbing a bottle of water from the bottle holder. "Maryam, will you please stop interrupting me! I'm.."He stopped the car in front of their house. "I wasn't interrupting.."

"Well there you go again." He rolled his eyes. She glanced up at him with a mischievous smile, "sorry". He met her gaze and his eyes warmed, his lips giving in to a smile. "Fine, but don't interrupt me again."

"Insha Allah." She promised and looked at the place she has grown fond of, her home. It was a beautiful white duplex with three parts. The first part by the right being their side, the middle one babas' and the last part by the left, their stepmothers'.

He honked at the gate and after a few minute, the gateman came out. He checked who it was, before opening the gate. They greeted mallam saminu aka the gateman as Abdallah drove into the house. "Okay so before we met each other at the dinner, a mutual friend told me about her, and also told her about me. We chatted for a while on instagram, spoke on the phone and then finally met. And honestly i have to say, i really like her. She is so fun to be around and all, so I'm thinking of asking her out." he confessed.

She was staring at him with a smile of joy and satisfaction which lit up her face, "iyyeh madinah, and she didn't even bother to tell us. But I'm so happy for her sha, you should totally go for it. Allah ya bada saa."

"Amin, thank you. Don't go and tease her a lot fah, because i know you are capable of it."
"Insha Allah." She promised blushing a bit. He stopped the car in the front of the house and asked maryam to go first, as he would park the car before coming in. She nodded in agreement and jumped out of the car.

She rang the door bell impatiently, her heart jumping in joy. She couldn't wait to be in the arms of her father, she has missed him a lot. "Who is it?" She heard their maid, hafsat ask.
"It's me."

Hafsat opened the door with a big smile plastered on her lips. "Sannu da zuwa (Welcome) Maryam."

"Thank you hafsat, is baba already here?" She asked rushing into the house after saying salaam. "No, not yet." She answered and was about to close the door after her when she told her Abdallah was coming.

Their house was welcoming from the door to the wide hallway. Upon the walls were photographs of the family together. A long red carpet had been laid on the pathway to the stairs. She climbed up the stairs and placed her hand on the banister, the banister was a work of art, made with twirl of branch, tamed by the carpenter's hand.

She hurried upstairs, and made her way to mama's room. "Assalam Alaikum." She greeted as she pushed open the door. The aroma of sandalwood incensed the air and a cold breeze of air conditioner hit her face as she walked into the room. Typical mama.

The large room came to view and for a brief moment, her gaze swept the familiar room running over the wallpapered wall, the gold curtains that hung over the two window, to the royal bed situated in the centre of the room. On one side of the room was a brown plaid sofa, with white ruffle pillows and a family picture hung upon the wall while on the other side was a white dressing mirror with its matching chair, then a television on the opposite wall.

"Mama!!" She called sitting on one side of the bed bench.  "Maryam, when did you get back?" Mama asked wiping her wet face with her scarf as she walked out from the toilet. She clearly just performed her ablution.

A smiled enveloped her face, "Just now. Good afternoon mama." She pulled her into a hug, "Afternoon, how are you?"

"I'm fine Alhamdulillah. Iyyeh mama you look gorgeous." She teased looking at mama as she laid a prayer carpet on the floor. Mama also smiled saying, "of course I do, thank you anyway. So how was your night?"

She gestured up at mama as she said, "it's all for Alhaji baba, isn't it?" She gave out a laugh when mama nod her head. "My night was fine."

Mama ushered Maryam out of the room, because she wouldn't let her concentrate in her prayer, she was busy talking as usual.
