ONE
Chapter 1
You were running late. You had accidently slept in and now you were running around your house, trying to find your phone. "Where are you?!" You groaned, looking in the lounge room.
You ran to your couch and lifted the cushions off, finally finding your phone. You sighed in relief, slipped on your shoes and ran out of the house.
Last time you were late, the kids were ballistic. They might as well have set the place on fire it was that hectic. You loved them anyway, even if they caused everyone else to have a headache.
After walking for a few minutes, you pushed open the adoption centre's doors and walked to the front desk. A woman with long, wavy grey hair sat there, typing away on her computer.
You rung the small bell, catching her attention. She looked up to your (E/C) eyes with her own blue ones, "Oh, (Y/N)!" She got up and ran around the counter until she gripped your shoulders, "We thought you'd never get here!"
You raised an eyebrow at her while pulling her arms off your shoulders, "Audrey? What's wrong? Are the kids okay?"
If anything had happened to those kids while you were late, you don't know how you could ever forgive yourself.
Audrey rubbed her neck with a small laugh, "Oh, they're perfectly fine, dear! Why don't you go calm- I mean see them?" She gestures to the doors which held the kids behind them.
You furrowed your eyebrows at the old woman before shrugging and walking towards the double doors.
Looking to the walls, you smile proudly. Pictures upon pictures were strung up, all done by the kids themselves. Some had talent and the others...not so much, but they were all masterpieces in your eyes.
What made your heart flutter was that most of the pictures had you in them, holding hands or paying with the young ones. You could easily see yourself in the pictures, all you had to look for is the tall (H/C) haired person with them.
Grinning, you pushed open the doors, only to gasp in surprise. The kids were everywhere. Some were jumping on their beds, pulling off the sheets or having pillow fights while others were play fighting with each other or whining.
You sighed and placed your handbag on the floor in the corner. Looking back at the about 20 kids, you placed your hands on your hips, "Wow, did you guys miss me that much? I'm barely fifteen minutes late!"
All the kids had their attention on you now, their eyes bright and huge grins on their faces. "(Y/N)!" They all cheered before rushing over to you and literally tackling you to the ground in a hug.
You laughed along with them, "Hi my little ones!" You cooed, ruffling up some of their hair.
After the bone shattering hug, most of the kids departed from you except the ones that had a special place in your heart, which is totally not picking favourites.
There were three kids sitting at your feet, their legs crossed with bright smiles on their faces.
Isaac, the oldest of the three sat in the middle. His blonde, sandy hair fell over his warm, brown eyes. He was twelve, but still wasn't adopted. He had been here for almost three years now.
To the left of him was Penelope, or Penny. She had the darkest brown hair you had ever seen, almost black while her eyes were storm grey. She's ten, but has been here for almost half her life.
From the right of Isaac was the youngest and sweetest child you ever knew, Lilly. She had bright baby blue eyes with light brown hair, natural blonde streaks as well. She's only 8, but loves hanging around the big kids and thinking she was as old as them.
These three special kids were why you woke up every morning. They filled your heart up with so much warmth and love. You treated them as your own kids.
Isaac waved a small hand in front of your face, "Miss (Y/N)?" He asked kindly, trying to get your attention.
You snapped out of your daydream and smiled down at them, "Sorry, I was daydreaming again." You laughed and ran a hand through your hair.
Lilly giggled, "You like dreaming, right miss (Y/N)?" She smiled innocently up at you.
You grinned and ruffled up her hair, "You know me too well, Lilly."
Penny tugged at your jeans, gaining your attention, "Can we have some fun?" She asked, tilting her head in question.
You leaned down to their heights, an eyebrow raised, "Sure. What type of fun do you have in mind?"
"I know!" Isaac yelled from his bed, a pillow in his hand. He smirked and threw it at your face. "Pillow fight!!"
You smirked and picked up the pillow, "I call war!!" You threw it back, knocking Isaac down to his bed.
Everyone cheered, grabbing their pillows and chucking them randomly. Laughter echoed around the room as feathers fluttered down everywhere, some landing in your hair as you tried to dodge the pillows like bullets.
After five minutes of fighting and being covered in feathers, the sound of the door squeaking caught your attention. Looking away from the battle, your mouth went agape.
Standing at the door was a well-built man, muscles easily seen through his black T-shirt. His messy coal black hair covered his eyes slightly while his warm brown eyes looked around the room in confusion.
He finally caught sight of your blushing face. He cleared his throat and held the cake tighter to his chest, which you just noticed he had. "A-Are you okay?" He looked you up and down, a small amused smile forming on his face.
You furrowed your eyebrows and looks yourself over, only to blush harder in embarrassment. Your clothes were ruffled while you had feathers in your hair. You squeaked and quickly tried to comb your fingers through your hair. "I-I'm fine-"
You were cut off as a pillow was thrown right in your face. Laughter started up again, but it wasn't only the children but also the new guy. This only made your face burn harder. Oh what an embarrassment.
