070. ELEANORA // PART 003
VII. CONFESSION
"Stefano," was all he uttered.
Looking at the man who just entered her apartment, Ellie tilted her head slightly to the side, brows furrowing over the remark. "What?"
"Two years ago, a fascinating woman asked for a promise to be made – that if the unknown man ever decided to give in, he would tell her his real name."
Ellie blinked, trying to comprehend that the events unfolding in front of her were actually happening. "I remember," she finally answered.
"Stefano – that's the name of the man who has thought of nothing but you for the past two years. The man who made every excuse to see you, to be around you, to hear you laugh and see you smile. That is the man who is undeniably in love with you, Nora." He stepped towards her. "I'm sorry if it is wrong to say, but I cannot allow another day to go by without telling you the truth. It's physically pained me long enough to push my feelings down and stand aside. I pride myself on never lying, yet all I've done is lie about my feelings for you."
S swallowed, trying to slyly wipe his sweat-slicken palms down the sides of his pants. "Stefano is the name of the man in love with Nora."
"N-no," she began to stutter.
"Yes," he insisted.
"Not Nora," her shaky voice managed. "Ellie – well, Eleanora, but I like going by Ellie." Clearing her throat, attempting to rid herself of the nerves that rattled her core, she said, "Ellie is the name of the woman he's in love with."
"Ellie," he repeated, a smile widening over the name that left his lips, "It's very nice to meet you, Ellie."
"It's nice to meet you too, Stefano."
A hand from the man Ellie now knew as Stefano caressed her face, brushing away the loose strands of hair. "I am in love with you, Ellie. From the day I met you, to now, to all the way in the far-off future, I will continue burning with love for you and only you."
"Do you really love me?" she asked as if needing clarification.
"Then, now, and forever, El."
"I love you too."
His eyes widened with surprise – he had said the words to himself so many times, Stefano forgot what it would be like to hear it from her lips. "Really?"
"Yes."
"Thank-fucking-god."
Hearing her confession was all the man needed. For the first time in two years, he could do what he wanted from the night they met.
He kissed her.
Stefano kissed Ellie. His hands touched her cheeks, and Ellie rested hers on his chest. He leaned into her, and she responded by deepening the kiss. God as his witness, he never wanted to let this feeling go. Two years of waiting. Of standing aside. Of pushing his feelings away. And now, he was kissing her – and it was the best rush one could have asked for.
Ellie's hands gripped the material of his shirt, unable to conceal her moans of pleasure. All the late-night wonderings of what this moment would be like... and yet, it was nothing like she expected. It was better. Indescribable. Unimaginable. Electric. Her skin felt on fire, burning for more of his touch. She whimpered as he pulled away for a breath, knowing she would willingly suffocate if it meant she could kiss him more.
Pressing his forehead against hers, he tried to control his breathing. His hand moved to the back of Ellie's neck as he kissed the corners of her mouth. He kissed her again. And again. And again. Loving, light pecks.
Ellie looked up, causing their noses to brush against each other. "Why now?" she asked. "Why kiss me now?"
"Because it's finally only a matter of time before I take over, which means, we'll be untouchable," he said, moving his lips down her neck. "But as of for why right now and not waiting... a few months ago, someone kindly told me I was more of an idiot than they thought... that you were the perfect woman for me." Stefano nipped at her skin, recounting the conversation from months ago. "Said I needed to stop being miserable and go after what I want... I said it was bullshit and even told Frankie about it – but that son of a bitch was on the same side."
"Smart friend," she managed to say, intermixed with a moan.
"Very..." his voice purred against her skin, "It made me realize I can't go another day without being with you... in every way, I pictured for the past two years. I can't force myself to deny it any longer." Brushing the hair from her face, he said, "We will have to keep this a secret until the time is right – until it's officially time for me to take over."
"I don't care – I think I prefer it that way. I don't like people in my business."
"Good. Me too," Stefano said, "Acting on my love for you is going to make me do very stupid things."
Ellie smiled. "Life isn't always an equation with one answer – a simple right or wrong. Maybe going against a rule we set two years ago isn't right in a logical sense... But I've learned that sometimes we must act without thinking through every step... that sometimes being a tad illogical can lead to the best results."
"Are you saying you want to be illogical with me, Ellie?"
"I am."
"Good." Lips finding their way back to hers, he whispered, "I need you, El. Forever."
"You have me, Stef. Forever and always."
Her words caused a sound only distinguishable with a growl to escape the back of his throat. Stefano touched her hips, pulling her body flush against his. He loved the sounds she made – every whimper and moan; it was a symphony to his ears. "Maybe," kiss, "we should," kiss, "take things," kiss, "slow."
Pulling back, her brows furrowed. "Take things slow?" she managed to ask through heavy breaths. "Why?"
"I don't want you to feel rushed into anything and–"
"Do you feel rushed into anything?"
"No."
"Good." Ellie pressed her hand against his chest, guiding his body to her bedroom. "I think taking two years to kiss me is slow enough. Now I want you to start showing me everything you've thought about for the past twenty-four months."
"That may take a while."
"Well, good thing you're stuck with me for the rest of your life. Plenty of time."
"Rest of my life?" Stefano smiled, dismissing any concerns that may have risen in her mind over saying such a thing. "I like how that sounds. Are you sure you'll put up with my shit ten...twenty... even fifty years from now?"
"I'll put up with your shit for the rest of time."
"Yeah?"
Ellie nodded as he lowered himself to the edge of her bed. "Yeah," she repeated, joining him on the mattress, straddling his waist. "It felt crazy at the time... but I felt the same way when we had dinner together for the first time. I didn't know a thing about you, and yet I couldn't help but think–"
"This is the person I will spend the rest of my life with."
"Yes," she admitted in a faint whisper, cheeks reddening. "Crazy, right?"
Stefano placed one hand on her waist while the other went to the back of her neck. "No," he breathed, eyes hazing with lust over the woman admitting such a thing, "Not for one minute... I thought that too."
"You did?"
"I did. And now, we're going to make that happen, Eleanora."
"I can't wait, Stefano."
Ellie didn't know what it was like to be touched in a way that made her feel loved and desired until that moment. She cautioned him before it began, saying it had been a while. There was a concise list of men that had seen her naked, and because of that, Ellie feared she wouldn't be enough for him. But there wasn't a moment where Stefano made her feel like that.
He asked her to promise to tell him to stop at any point – whether she wanted things to end entirely or didn't like what he was doing. She promised, knowing she would stick to her word.
But the second he laid her down against the mattress, Ellie felt things would be different than every other time. His movements were never rushed or done only for his pleasure. There seemed to be intent and care behind every kiss, every touch of his flattened tongue against her skin. He listened to her moans, watched where her body responded and was encouraged to keep going. Ellie wasn't nervous or shied away from removing her shirt or taking off her bra. She felt savoured under his touch, electric by how his mouth and hands explored the newly exposed skin.
Stefano kissed a trail down her stomach, reaching the waistband of her pants. Receiving a nod of approval, he peeled the material off her legs, pulled her underwear down, and discarded both items onto the floor. He ran his flattened palms against her bare thighs and positioned himself between her legs.
As he kissed along the skin, nudging her legs to spread further, Ellie wanted to tell him he didn't half to if he didn't want to – considering that's how it usually went. But the second she felt his tongue, she knew he wanted to. And holy fuck, was she ever grateful for it. Her back instantly arched at the first tongue, forcing his arm to rest across her stomach and keep her hips from lifting. By the time he added a finger, she knew she was done for – and thankful his arm strength kept her body from completely arching off the mattress.
Ellie moaned and fisted the sheets until she felt overpowered by a feeling that left her cheeks flushed and skin slick with sweat. She blinked, adjusting to the light before looking down at the man, lifting his head from between her legs.
"Did I just..."
He grinned, licking the corners of his mouth. "You most certainly did."
"I've never..." her voice trailed off as she tried to regain her breath.
"You've never orgasmed that way before?"
Ellie shook her head. "The guys I've been with," she cleared her throat, "didn't do all that."
"Did you want them to?"
"I mean," she sucked in a harsh breath, feeling his lips trail back up her stomach towards her breasts, "I think so... but it probably wouldn't have felt like that..."
Stefano kissed along her collarbones. "And how did that feel?"
"Good," she hummed. "Really, really good."
"Well, whenever I do something that feels really, really good, you tell me so I know to do it for the rest of time. Sì?"
"Sì," Ellie managed before sounds of pleasure overtook her voice.
Ellie knew what it was like to have sex. But the way he felt inside her caused Ellie to question if she truly understood what it was like. It wasn't due to being in love – she knew this feeling could be obtained without the four-letter word. It was because what she was enjoying now, the pleasure that took over her body, was something she never experienced before.
It wasn't like she could give him all the praise – he was undoubtedly singing praises and gratitude for all she was doing. And Ellie knew it wasn't like he had a magical cock that she was entranced by. But for the first time, she felt what it was like to have sex and have someone think of her pleasure instead of just their own.
"I love you," he whispered, kissing the top of her head.
Resting her head on his chest, she panted through an, "I love you too," before adding, "I'm hungry."
After rinsing off in the shower, Stefano made them his world-famous grilled cheese. They ate on the couch and attempted to stop themselves from smothering each other with I love you's – although it posted quite the challenge considering it was the first day of admitting the world out loud. The dishes barely made it into the sink before their minimal clothing returned to the floor. It was a wonderful way to spend the night – there was no debate about that.
By the time morning rolled around, the realization they couldn't spend the rest of the day in bed together hung over their heads like a grey cloud. Unfortunately, the rest of the world went about their day as normal even though the two love birds were still smitten in their honeymoon stage.
"You could just come with me," he suggested for the hundredth time, "I could go about my meetings in record timing and bend you over my desk all afternoon."
Hearing such naughty talk slip through his lips was still a surprise, causing her cheeks to redden. "Don't you think that might raise suspicions?"
Stefano waved off the concern as he pulled up his pants. "I think it would be worth it," he teased as his eyes searched the bedroom floor for his shirt.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Always."
"How long did you know my name before I told you?"
Turning to face her, Stefano cocked his head to the side. "Whatever do you mean, my love?"
"When did you find out my name?"
"When you told me."
Ellie sat up and wrapped the sheets around her naked frame. "And when did you first find out?"
"That your name was Eleanora?" Stefano sat down on the edge of the bed and fumbled with his cufflink. "I'd say... by the time I got home after the first night of meeting you. Give or take a few minutes."
"Impressive."
"Mmhm," the man leaned toward her, stealing a kiss, "But I knew you went by Ellie earlier in your apartment."
"What!" She playfully shoved him back. "How?"
"There was a birthday card on your kitchen counter from your friend Helen."
Her brows furrowed. "You never hinted that you knew. Why?"
"You told me your name was Nora, so I addressed you as such." Stefano brought a hand to her face, cupping her cheek. "I knew one day I'd earn the honour of learning your preferred name. There was no reason for me to defy your trust."
"So, finding out information behind my back wasn't defying my trust?"
"That was research," he shrugged, "I had to ensure you weren't some beautiful seductress planted by the enemy."
"I can't believe you knew this entire time."
"Want to know another secret?"
Ellie beamed. "Always!"
"That necklace you're wearing," he pointed to the heart-shaped pendant he bought her for Christmas, "Did you know it's a locket?"
"What?"
He helped her remove the necklace and placed it in her palm. "Open it."
I love you, E.
Forever and always, S.
"You had me walk around with a locket that said you loved me for six months?"
"I've known I was in love with you for a very long time, El... but I couldn't tell you with words back then, and it got to the point where I feared I might burst out and say it. So," he gestured to the item in her hand, "I had to let you know somehow."
"This is..." she couldn't tear her eyes away from the message, "This is the most beautiful thing someone has ever done for me."
At that moment, Ellie knew what she felt on the first date with him to be anything but crazy.
She was going to spend the rest of her life with this man.
VIII. PROGRAM X
"What would I do without you, Nurse Nora?"
Ellie couldn't help but giggle over the remark, finding his words mixed with the current position of lying on the expensive couch with half-open eyes and a recently stitched-up torso. "Bleed out?"
"I'd be fucking dead. I can tell ya that much!"
"Well, I can't let that happen under my watch."
"Mm," he hummed, "You're so nice."
"Thank you."
"And kind... and warm... and you make really, really good food... and you're so pretty–"
"Shouldn't you be resting?" the deep, demanding voice interrupted from behind.
As Tony's eyes widened in fear, Ellie gave him a look that said, "Don't worry," before turning her head and glancing over her shoulder at the man in the doorway. "I was just checking in on the healing process, that's all."
"He should be resting," he shortly replied, "and by the sounds of things, he wasn't doing any of that."
Ellie rolled her eyes and turned back around to observe the area of her patient's stitches for a final time. "Is there something you need, Mr. Romano? Or can I go back to finishing my job?"
Stefano scoffed, suppressing the urge to reply with the remark on the tip of his tongue. He'd save that for later. "Stop by the office when you're finished. There are some matters we must discuss."
Hearing shoes clicking against the marble floors disappear off into the distance, Ellie sighed. "Ignore him. I'm sure he's just in a bad mood over something completely unrelated. I'll make sure I make it clear you did nothing wrong when I speak with him."
"Really? You will?"
"Of course." She smiled. "You did nothing wrong, and Mr. Angry Pants needs to realize that."
"Mr. Angry Pants," Tony repeated with a chuckle. "Ah, that's a good one!"
"I'm glad you think so." She quickly collected the scattered items and disposed of everything into the trash bag. "Now, you get some sleep and focus on healing, alright?"
Ellie left the boy to get some rest and swiftly exited the room, closing the door behind her. She disposed of the trash bag in its designated bin and washed her hands thoroughly before heading down the long hallway to the office. The door was left ajar, a signal to all that he was available for visitors.
She knocked on the door for good measure and stepped into the room. "You requested to see me?"
"Come in and close the door behind you."
Stefano motioned her in without looking up, pretending to be distracted by the papers on his desk. But the second Ellie's attention focused on closing the door, he was out of his chair and crossing the room within a few strides. His hands went to her waist as she turned, pulling her body flush against his.
Dipping his head down, Stefano captured her lips in a kiss before she could say a word. Ellie responded instantly to the action by wrapping her arms around his neck and deepening the kiss. A sudden push against the back of the door caught her by surprise, causing her mouth to open slightly with a gasp – which allowed Stefano the perfect opportunity to slip his tongue past her parted lips, kissing her until they both needed a necessary breath.
"Mr. Romano?" he repeated the name from earlier. "When I heard that sassy remark slip from your lips, I wanted to bring you in here and bend you over the desk."
"Tempting," she hummed. "But first – I know we're trying to keep up appearances. However, you should be nicer around Tony. The kid nearly wet his pants thinking you were really mad at him."
Stefano rolled his eyes. "He's a big boy. He'll survive the crossfire."
"Crossfire? What crossfire?"
"I was grumpy that you didn't come to the office to see me before you started work."
"I have a job. And, besides, you didn't say goodbye before you left this morning."
"Ah, so you were punishing me? Keeping me from my hello?"
"No, I was just stating a fact." She crossed her arms over her chest. "I have a job – patients I care for." Ellie caught how his upper lip snarled slightly. "Oh my god," she laughed, "You're jealous!"
"I am not."
"You so are!" She poked her finger against his chest. "I didn't think the green jealous giant would be your shade. Are you because I went to go see Tony first?" Ellie taunted. "Or because he called me pretty?"
"I'll never get jealous over someone complimenting you, El."
"Ah, so it's because I saw him first. Well, maybe if you didn't sneak out this morning, I would have been more inclined to say hello."
"So you were punishing me."
"A bit."
"Does it help my case if I say the only reason I left unannounced was because you were still fast asleep?"
Ellie shook her head, pressing her lips to mask the smile that begged to show.
"Then I guess I have some making up to do. Why don't we–"
A loud banging noise against the door caught them both by surprise. While Stefano remained alarmed while staying quiet, Ellie couldn't help but let out a yelp, which she attempted to muffle by pressing her lips together.
"Brother? Open up!" the sound of Serafina's voice loudly called out from the other side.
"Maybe if we're quiet, she'll go away," he whispered.
"Don't pretend you're not in there!" Serafina yelled. "I already know you are!"
Releasing a disgruntled sigh, Stefano gave them both a moment to fix their appearance. Ellie quickly reached forward, adjusting the collar of his dress shirt before nodding her approval to open the door. But the second it was opened, a child sprinted through.
"Can you watch him?"
Stefano's eyes narrowed as his voice dropped to a whisper, "Since when did I become a fucking babysitter?"
"Since I got busy last minute and desperate because I have no other options. So, can you? Please? I'll be back right after dinner."
Looking over his shoulder, Stefano watched Ellie instantly walk over to the young boy and crouch down to play with the big red truck he had in his hand. "Shouldn't his father be looking after him?"
"He flew out this morning."
"And didn't think to arrange care for his son?" he bitterly spat. "Father of the Year award goes to–"
"Fai silenzio." Be quiet.
Stefano released a heavy breath. "You've spent more time with him than his own father does. And considering you didn't know he existed a few months ago, that's saying something."
"If you are just going to continue talking my ear off about how I'm not willingly neglecting a child just because I didn't give birth to him–"
"That's not what I'm saying," he gritted through his teeth. "I just don't like how he disrespects you. Constantly."
"Well, if it makes you feel any better, neither do I." Serafina crossed her arms over her chest. "So, can you watch him? Or not?"
He stood silently for a moment as if needing time to think it over before glancing at the child. "Come on, Gio. Let's make you some dinner."
The following weeks followed a similar pattern. While Stefano became busy with work, the nights alone with Ellie became few and far between. He hated every time he couldn't come home to her or had to cancel last minute. Whenever they did seem to have a night to finally be theirs, Serafina called asking for a favour and dropped off Giovanni.
Stefano was never upset with Serafina when she called. After all, motherhood was sprung on her when Luca returned home from a trip overseas with a toddler. No one knew anything of the baby before his arrival, but now, his sister was the one caring for him.
"I still can't believe he's done this to her," Stefano muttered as he scooped ice cream into a bowl. "Getting another woman pregnant," he scoffed, shaking his head, "Dumping the baby on my sister while he goes off to go who knows what."
"At least Gio is lucky to have her – Serafina, I mean," Ellie clarified, "He's a sweet kid."
Opening the container of rainbow sprinkles, Stefano nodded in agreement. "We can only hope he picks up no traits of his father."
Ellie watched as he picked up the bowl of ice cream with a smile and approached the child as if their discussion never took place. She had to give him credit – for as much as he hated Luca and everything that had to do with that man, Stefano would drop everything to babysit Gio and give him the best night possible at his zio's house.
But as Serafina adjusted better to her new mother role, Gio's babysitting needs significantly diminished – which meant Stefano had more time to put back into work... resulting in less time with Ellie.
At least Ellie had Serafina visit (with Gio in tow) most nights. It was nice but slightly odd in a humorous way – Ellie had replaced her Romano company from one sibling to the other. At least she could spend more time with Serafina, developing their friendship without her brother.
Although the long nights Stefano continued to work began to worry Ellie. She knew he took his work seriously, but she felt his stress growing each time he collapsed into bed.
Over the months of them officially being together, Stefano had begun to open up more about his business. Pillow talk, he referred to it as. Nothing for her to become involved in – just light discussion regarding whatever he was struggling with from that day. Ellie encouraged him to talk, given he was comfortable, wanting to be his support system. She knew more of the legal businesses than not, but she wasn't stupid. She had been piecing together where most of the money came from since the first day in this apartment.
But just like Stefano didn't expose that he knew her real name until she brought it up, Ellie offered him the same courtesy.
"I thought you were coming to bed hours ago."
"I know, my love. I'm sorry," he released a heavy sigh. Standing behind the large mahogany desk, his palms pressed against the smooth surface as his eyes scanned every document he had laid out. "It's this business proposal we received... something isn't right."
"Anything I can help with?"
"It's some recruitment program... but they're so evasive about their information it just..." Stefano pinched the bridge of his nose, "Something doesn't feel right."
One of the files caught Ellie's attention. "Why would a recruitment program involve the hospital I work at?"
"What?"
She pointed at the page. "That page has the hospital name printed on it."
Stefano instantly reached for it, reading over the document. "It says..." he read it over again, "It says they've conducted research there."
"Research for what? Getting recruits?"
He shook his head. "I... I don't know. I must not be thinking straight about this. But the way Luca's eyes were lighting up like a fucking Christmas tree over a business proposal that makes no fucking sense has me concerned."
"Well, maybe you need to find out more so you can keep an eye on him," she suggested, "And maybe you need to sleep on it. It's late, Stef. You need your rest."
He obliged. But for countless nights, Ellie would wake up and find the other side of the bed empty.
"V? Again?" Ellie questioned, walking over to where he sat. "Should I be worried about this mystery person that keeps stealing all your attention from me?"
"I'm sorry, my love," Stefano whispered, guiding her body into his lap. "There's just... a lot."
"I could help, you know," she offered, eyes falling to that one page.
"No."
"But–"
"El, no." His tone was firm. "You know how I feel about that. I won't budge."
Ellie sighed, toying with a strand that fell from his perfectly styled look and hung on his forehead. "I do know how you feel," she affirmed. "I just hate seeing you like this when I know there's something I can do."
"You're not getting involved. Not with this. Especially when it can jeopardize your career." He gently grasped her wrist, bringing her hand to his lips. Pressing a kiss to her palm, he added, "I love you for even considering such a thing. But we agreed to draw a clear line regarding your involvement – which will always be nothing. It's for your safety, El."
"I know."
"Don't be upset with me."
"I'm not upset," she half-lied, "I just want to help. And I want you back."
His mind had been consumed by this. For months on end, there had been a shift. Stefano felt guilty for letting things get this way, but this was part of his life. Sometimes, his relationships were sacrificed. He hated doing that to her; she didn't deserve it.
"Soon," he whispered. "Promesso."
IX. BIRTHDAY
When Eleanora was a child, everyone knew her as Nora.
It wasn't a nickname she was called by her own choosing, nor a name she told those around her to use. Nora was decided before she could speak or form her own thought – therefore, it was what everyone knew her as.
And when the six-year-old asked if she could be known as Ellie instead because that's what her best friend called her, it was the first time she learned not to ask questions.
Little Nora went to school the next day in long sleeves and pants on one of the hottest days of the year. She didn't enter the classroom buzzing with energy or excitedly participate in all the lessons. Her usual seat at the front was now bare, opting to sit quietly in the back row. She barely spoke and winced when her friend asked, "Is everything alright, Ellie?"
Overnight, the child that was once a happy, giggling ball of light turned into a sad, quiet shell of darkness.
Birthdays were an especially odd time of year. While all the other kid's got to have a party with friends, Little Nora never asked why hers wasn't celebrated. She already knew the answer. It was useless, a waste of time and money, and stupid to think anyone would want to attend.
"I never had birthday cake when I was a kid," she told Stefano when recounting the story of her childhood, "Sometimes in class, a kid's parents would come in to celebrate and bring a cake for everyone. But I was scared I'd get in trouble – so I never ate it. I pretended I was allergic, full from lunch, or sneakily gave it to the kid sitting next to me."
"Have you ever had it?"
"Helen made me one a few years ago. I told her I didn't want any gifts for my birthday, so she insisted on that instead. And it was really good. Plus, I didn't burst into tears or flames when I ate it, so that was a bonus," she teased, trying to lighten the mood. There was a brief silence before she added, "You two are the only ones that call me Ellie."
"Really?"
"Nora isn't a painful name for me to hear – I think it's quite pretty, actually. But Ellie is special, so only special people get to call me it."
Everyone called her Nora. But those who knew to call her Ellie weren't just special; they were trusted.
Ellie's birthday fell just before the yearly anniversary of her and Stefano's entanglement – this year marked the third year of knowing one another and the first of being together.
Last year, Ellie got away with not receiving a gift from him. Her argument, and a successful one at that, was that he just spent a year's rent on a necklace hanging beautifully from her neck. Plus, days later, Stefano confessed his love – which Ellie obviously used to her advantage when standing by the decision of no gifts. And although Stefano didn't want to listen, he did without argument. He knew this time of year was still something she struggled with, and he didn't want to push.
This year they came to an understanding. If Stefano felt so inclined (which, of course, he did), he was allowed to do something small. Ellie stressed the importance of it being small and intimate, as all she wanted for her birthday was to spend it with him.
"I have something in mind," he said, regarding the discussion of a gift, "It's practical and useful – nothing extravagant."
Ellie raised a brow. "I feel like our definitions of practical and useful are nothing alike, Stef."
"What if I told you it wouldn't cost me anything to give it to you?"
"Really?"
"Well, I might have to spend a few dollars on supplies putting it together."
Her suspicions rang high, knowing the man in front of her, but Ellie couldn't deny that she wasn't intrigued. "Fine," she finally answered, "You can give me one practical and useful gift."
Stefano tried to hide the proud grin tugging the corners of his mouth by covering it with a kiss on her lips. "Pleasure doing business with you."
When Ellie entered the apartment on the evening of her birthday, there was a slight dread over the idea of more festivities. She felt guilty that the feeling was there, but given her day, it was warranted. Her coworkers had passed along messages of well wishes, a gesture Ellie appreciated – but the follow-up comments and questions were what caused her dread.
"Oh, that's a big age!"
"I bet you're thinking about settling down soon!"
"Better start planning on finding a husband!"
"Are you thinking about kids in a few years?"
"Don't let your best years get behind you!"
"Clocks ticking!"
Ellie missed the days when she was still new at the hospital – when her coworkers hadn't taken an interest in any of the new staff and left her birthday pass unnoticed. And so, by the end of the day, after countless fake smiles and playing along to avoid discussions of questioning why on earth she didn't care about marriage or want kids, Ellie was exhausted.
And slightly praying Stefano hadn't thrown together some big surprise. If another smile had to be faked, she was sure she would burst into flames.
As the elevator doors opened to a dark house, Ellie assumed Stefano wasn't home yet. At least it gave her a few seconds to collect herself and prepare for the future birthday evening. With a sigh escaping her lips, she flicked on the lights, illuminating the living room.
To her immense gratitude, no one popped out from behind the furniture, yelling "Surprise!" and flooding her personal space to wish her a happy birthday.
There was no crowd in front of her.
Only one person stood in the living room in front of a handmade sign hanging on the wall. He wore his usual suit attire, accessorized with a birthday hat.
"Surprise," Stefano said calmly, grinning from ear to ear.
"Nurse Nora's Day," she read the sign aloud, recognizing his handwriting.
"I thought you would have been tired of hearing, you know..." He dropped the volume of his voice, "Happy birthday," he whispered, "All day long. So, I went with some alternative wording."
Sinking her teeth into her bottom lip, Ellie felt a genuine smile, the first one of the day, tug onto her lips. Not only had Stefano put together a cheeky sign, but he also decorated the room with a few colourful balloons and streamers hanging from the ceiling. Even Pancake was curled up on the couch, wearing a festive hat of her own.
"I see you got matching hats," she teased, trying to ignore the gloss hazing across her eyes.
"Well, we both had to be somewhat festive."
"I can't believe you got that on her."
"It was easy. Pancake loves me." He stepped forward. "Do you still love me even though I did this?"
"What?"
"If you want me to take it all down, I will – just say the word. No questions asked. But I wanted to at least try to decorate–"
"Stef," she interjected with a whisper of his name, "I love it."
"You do?"
She nodded. "Wait. Is anyone else here?"
"No, it's just us."
"Then I really fucking love it." She wiped her eyes. "It's perfect. And I'm sorry I make this day so difficult."
"It's not difficult at all, my love. I just want to make sure you're comfortable." He took another step, minimizing the distance between them. Bringing his hands to her face, he gently tilted her head, allowing their eyes to meet. "All that matters is you. It is your day, after all."
Ellie sniffed as her bottom lip trembled. "Yeah, well, my day has sucked until right now."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
"It's fine," she shrugged off the remark. "Just people wishing me a happy birthday while simultaneously saying I'm old and need to lock down a man before I lose all my best assets and become a worthless pile of dust."
Stefano's head tilted slightly to the side. The confusion that washed his face suddenly turned angry. Ellie could tell by the way his eyes narrowed, paired with the slight snarl of his upper lip – which caused her to quickly add,
"I was just paraphrasing. It wasn't that bad."
"Are you sure?"
She nodded. "It's just not what someone wants to hear any day of the week, let alone on their birthday."
Ellie loved how he was ready to jump to her defence within a split second. But the last thing she needed was the hospital to be understaffed because Stefano decided to defend her honour by putting them out of commission – at least, that's what she assumed he did to people that caused him anger. She wasn't told, of course.
The pad of his thumb brushed her skin, wiping away the fallen tears. "Well, I promise I will do whatever I can to make up for your day. Whatever you want, you get. Well, that's true every day," he teased, "But especially today."
"I want a kiss."
Without needing further instruction, Stefano dipped his head down. Their lips brushed as he captured hers in a kiss. It was soft and gentle – a loving kiss. After the day Ellie had, she needed to be reminded of that feeling.
"Those people are fucking stupid," he murmured against her lips, "Jealous, bitter, stupid people... they just can't imagine someone so beautiful like you exists, so they spew mindless hatred. They'd be fucking lucky to have just one percent of what makes you so amazing. Sei piu bella di un angelo." You are more beautiful than an angel.
Her heart fluttered as he said the words from their first date. But it wasn't the compliments that made her feel better – it was just his presence. He calmed her worries and anxiety and crushed her doubts before they could spiral into something uncontrollable. He made her feel safe and protected, without feeling worthless or small in comparison. He could have spewed nonsense at her or just said random words, and she knew, oddly, it would make her feel better – she just liked hearing the sound of his voice.
Ellie pulled her head back, letting her eyes sink deeply into the pair of honey-brown staring back at her. "Ti amo." I love you.
Stefano barely managed to get out his own ti amo before his lips were back of hers. He loved how she spoke Italian – it warmed his heart every time she said a word, just like it did on their first date. He kissed the corners of her mouth before regretfully pulling back. There was an entire night planned, and as much as he wanted to spend the time kissing her instead, Stefano wanted her to at least see the surprise first.
Ellie giggled. "You look so cute in your little hat."
His brow arched. "What–" Suddenly, he remembered the colourful thing on top of his head. "Oh," he coughed, trying to shield his slight embarrassment. "I don't know how I forgot I was wearing it, considering the strap is digging into my skin."
"Do I get a hat? Or did you only want to match with Pancake?"
"Actually, you get to pick. Birthday hat or tiara."
Ellie picked the tiara to fulfill her princess fantasy for the night. She followed his lead to the kitchen, amazed to see Stefano's setup.
They made homemade pizzas for dinner – Stefano was quite proud of creating 'I LOVE EL' out of pepperonis on his – and ate in front of the television while watching one of Ellie's favourite movies. And for dessert, he surprised her with a homemade cake.
"I love you" were her first words after blowing out her candles.
Although they had said it probably a million times already, every time the three words left her lips, she felt like she was falling more in love – a revelation that surprised her each time.
When it was time for presents, Stefano was giddy with excitement.
The past year had been consumed with far too many highs to count. But it didn't make the lows any less apparent. Stefano wasn't as present as he wanted and spent too many late nights in his office. But Ellie never held it against him. She knew it was part of his life, and although she still knew very little about it, Ellie accepted it for what it was.
Stefano was always amazed by her. He truly believed any other woman would have given up and expressed anger over things Ellie held no resentment for, which is precisely why he wanted to give her this gift.
"Are you suing me?"
"What?"
"I don't know. I only see these envelopes used in television shows when someone's getting sued." She shook the item. "And there's a lot of paper in here. Are you sure you're not suing me?"
Rolling his eyes, he waved off the remark. "I'm sure. Now open it!"
Ellie had to admit she found his excitement adorable. Opening the envelope, she pulled out the booklet of paper, fastened together with a claw clip. "Med school applications?"
"When you're ready to submit your application, I will pay for your tuition."
"What? Why?"
"You once demanded that I hire a doctor I trust. Well," he smiled, "I want that doctor to be you."
"But Stef... this is a lot of money and–"
"It doesn't matter."
"It does! Shouldn't you put that money to better use?"
"No, because I've already decided to put it towards the best thing in the world – you. Let me invest in your future – our future. I want to help fund your dream so I can fulfill mine."
Ellie raised a brow. "Fulfill your dream? What's that?"
"Being able to have the honour of calling you Doctor Khan."
A week passed before Ellie heard the dreaded question,
"Have you started applying anywhere?"
Immediately following receiving the gift, Ellie was still blown away. She couldn't believe Stefano was serious–he was willing to pay for her education. The overwhelming feeling masked her fears and tricked her mind with elation. For the rest of the night, Ellie was excited about finally getting the chance to fulfil her dream and become a doctor.
But then, the following day came – and the realization of how she truly felt about it all hit her like a tidal wave. Dread, worry, anxiety and terror consumed her body.
"I have a few schools I'm thinking of." Ellie gave her a nonchalant shrug, picking at her nails. "But... I don't know if I'm going to apply."
Serafina's eyes widened over the revelation. "What? Why not?"
"The arrangement now works just fine – it has for years. Stef has a Doctor he trusts for big emergencies, and I still help out where I'm needed." She kept her head down. "And... it's a lot of money. I can't let him spend all of that – and he's already said no to letting me pay him back."
"Well, if you paid him back, then it wouldn't really be a gift, would it?"
Ellie could only reply with a tight-lipped smile and nodding her head, faking agreement.
"Nora... what is it?"
"Nothing," she answered almost too quickly. "I'm fine."
"Could you at least look at me and say that so I can pretend to believe you?"
Ellie wanted to do anything but that. She wanted to run and hide behind a closed door to avoid this conversation at all costs. But Serafina wasn't one to give up. The woman wasn't pushy by any means – she was just rightfully concerned. Her friend, who had spoken nothing of her dreams in such high regard, was now cowering away. And as Ellie lifted her head, exposing her glossy eyes, Serafina was right about feeling worried.
"Oh, Nora," she said softly, "What is it?"
"What if I'm not good enough?" Ellie finally confessed, wiping away a tear before it rolled down her cheek. "What if I can't do it? What if I get accepted, and then I suck and flunk out? What if I waste all that money and can't–"
"Nora," the woman cooed, placing a hand over hers. "You are a brilliant woman that has aced her entrance exams every time you've taken them... and you're going to excel at med school as well. And if it's not the right path, it's not the right one. No harm, no foul. My brother would never be upset if something didn't work out."
Ellie sniffled. "He says the same thing – that he wouldn't be upset if I changed my mind halfway through the program or if something happened."
"Do you not believe him?"
"I do believe him. I trust him more than anyone. It's just...." Her voice trailed off as she searched for the words. "It's hard to believe he truly exists – that his kind, pure, generous soul is real because it feels like he's the type of person you only read about in books. I love him more than anything, but sometimes I worry I can't measure up to what he's already done for me – for us."
"Nora–"
"Stef put everything at risk just to be with me, and he's continuously doing all these amazing things. He puts himself under so much stress and pressure to keep our life together and the life he leads apart from me... that if he adds paying for school, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars, on top of it all..." Ellie shrugged. "Even if it's not with money, I'm just worried I'll never be able to pay him back – that I'll never be able to match his generosity and kindness... and that he might wake up and regret what he's done."
Bringing a hand to her face, Serafina brushed a fallen strand of hair behind her ear. "If there's one thing I know for certain, it's that my brother is never going to wake up and regret anything about you," she assured softly, "Can I tell you a little story?"
Ellie nodded.
"Over three years ago, I came back to the city for a visit... it had been a while since I had been here, and I couldn't wait to make up for lost time by annoying my brother," she teased, "But when I saw him, I immediately noticed something was different. He smiled a little more... his eyes were softer... he laughed, a sound I hadn't heard in years... it reminded me of when we were younger, before the harsh, cruel reality of what was waiting consumed us both. I tried to investigate the sudden cause of his change in demeanour because usually, I can tear him apart like that!" Serafina snapped her fingers. "But, I couldn't. So, I finally gave up and asked what made him that way... and do you know what he said?"
"What?"
"I got stabbed. Stabbed!" Serafina exclaimed. "He was grinning like the Cheshire fucking cat when he said it too. Of course, I knew there had to be more to the story... but even his right-hand man was uncrackable! It was infuriating! They truly wanted me to believe that a stab wound turned my brother into that." Rolling her eyes, she scoffed. "At first, I thought maybe his smile would disappear after the first day... but then it stayed for days on end... so, stupidly, I began to think maybe it was the stab wound that made this happen! But then, one night, he came home, and the smile disappeared. He locked himself away in his office and demanded no one bother him – but of course, I didn't listen. I'm his sister, after all," she smiled, "After standing my ground and not leaving for hours, he finally admitted to me that he had just made the biggest mistake of his life... and then, he waited by the phone all night – which never rang. My imagination ran wild, wondering what got him into acting like that when finally, he caved and told me... I met the eyes of my future."
Ellie felt her mouth run dry.
"He then promptly asked that we never speak of it again. I bit my tongue on the matter for as long as I could, which of course, only lasted me a handful of minutes before I looked at him and said, what are you going to do about it then?" Serafina rose from her seat and walked to the far wall. "I have no idea if my words meant anything to him; truth be told, I doubt they did. I'm sure he just swore to the empty room once I left." Her eyes scanned across the shelf of unmarked letter-bound books. She let out a satisfied "Here we are" under her breath, locating the item she sought. "However, what I do know is this."
Serafina sat on the couch and opened the book before turning the pages, looking for a specific one. Ellie looked down at the pages as they flipped past. Page after page was filled with long lists of names and dates, which she recognized none of – nor could she quickly read fast enough.
"Recognize these names?"
Leaning closer to observe, Ellie blinked. Her eyes shifted between the page and the beautiful woman sitting beside her. "He wrote down the hospital I work at?" Her brows furrowed. "And... that's the shelter I got Pancake from..."
"My brother loves to say he doesn't leave a paper trail," she rolled her eyes, "But this is the one thing he does write down – all the places he's ever donated to."
"Stef donated to my work and the shelter?"
Serafina nodded. "Since the moment he met you, a donation has been made every month like clockwork."
"But... why?"
"Because it was clearly important to you, so it became important to him," she said. "The business side of things may not be innocent... but my brother is not his father's son. Which means although he participates in activities that may not be morally correct, he gives back to everyone. Supports his people, as you've seen. Is tremendously generous to those he does and doesn't know. Funds life back into communities around the city. He never asks for anything in return because that's not why he does it. He does those things because he wants to – because it's important to him."
Serafina placed her hand over Ellie's and gave it a squeeze. "He didn't want me around you for the longest time because he knew I'd figure it out – that you were the reason for his smile, and if I put two-and-two together, I would never let it go. And, of course, he was right about that." She laughed. "I don't think you changed him, Nora. That man inside him was always there – he just needed a reason to let that side shine again. I'm glad you found each other because he was smiling from the first night you two met, and ever since you've been around, he hasn't stopped. So when you say you're worried you'll never be able to pay him back, it's devastating to hear because you don't realize what you have given him since the first night."
It wasn't that Ellie questioned whether Stefano would ever be the type of person to hold something like paying for her education against her. No matter what, Ellie knew the man she loved held the true value of generosity close to his heart – he gave without expecting something in return. But whenever she was the receiver of such a thing, her mind loved to grasp at self-sabotaging.
Ellie pictured herself back in the bathroom, wanting to cry over, thinking a man way out of her league didn't want to kiss her and picturing the other women that would be far better suited to stand in her place. Now, she couldn't escape the voice in her head, taunting her stupidity by climbing out of a window. She was trapped in that room with nothing but her thoughts – which would ultimately send her down a rabbit hole of destruction.
But speaking with Serafina reminded Ellie of one crucial thing: Stefano had done nothing but love and support her dreams from the moment they met. Ellie never believed instant love was real. She thought people had to be blinded by lust or pure desire. If Stefano had met the eyes of his future that night, Ellie met the soul of hers.
What was important to her became important to him from the very first night. Despite their first interaction being lukewarm at best, he supported the place she worked and the facility that brought her Pancake. He wasn't afraid to openly speak of their future – their plans for where they would live while growing old together. Whenever she had brought up med school in the past, he always spoke of it in such high regard, expressing he couldn't wait to cheer her on from the sidelines.
"You've given him life, Nora," Serafina's voice brought Ellie back to reality, "He wants to pay for your schooling because he believes in you and knows how important your dream is."
"Thank you."
"Anytime. Just don't tell him I voluntarily sang his praises." She rolled her eyes. "He'll never let me live it down."
Ellie laughed, feeling the tension in her shoulders disappear. Her chest felt less constricted, and her head no longer swarmed with fears spiralling out of control. Since receiving her birthday gift, Ellie finally felt at ease. And suddenly, the answer of what to do was finally clear.
Eleanora Khan was going to be a doctor.
X. LIES
Ellie felt her entire body blushing with emotions following the conversation with Serafina. She knew how generous the man she loved was – she had witnessed it a million times with every person around him. Spending the rest of her life with him was a given. It wasn't a question in Ellie's mind. But insecurities from the past always found a funny way to creep up when least expected. Which was why her fear of him regretting investing in her future materialized.
It was late at night by the time Stefano returned to the apartment. Ellie crept out of the guest bedroom and tip-toed down the hall, slipping into his bedroom without being seen. A slight pout formed on her lips, spotting him sitting at the edge of the bed, head in his hands.
"Stef?"
Stefano's head immediately lifted at the sound of her voice. "I thought you went to bed." He appeared relieved and motioned a hand for her to come closer.
"Are you okay?"
"Better now that you're here, my love."
Ellie straddled his waist, resting her hands on his shoulders while she sat down on his thighs. "Long day?"
"Mm," he hummed, "I can't wait for this all to be over... to be rid of these animals once and for all... I'm tired of these horrible people keeping me away from you all the time..."
Raising a hand to his face, she cupped his cheek and gently grazed her thumb against his skin. "Don't worry about me. I'll always be here waiting for you." She noted his tired eyes fighting to close and the faint smile that crossed his lips. "I'll always be here to help you."
"I just want this to be over."
"I know you do," she said, not knowing what it meant.
"I'm so fucking tired of pretending to be this sinister man around Luca," he whispered, "It's tearing me apart inside."
Her eyes widened over his exhausted confession. Never had she heard him say such things about the secret business proposal. Stefano limited more and more of their conversations about the topic over the year, leading Ellie to worry just how severe it was if he were saying such a thing aloud.
"Stef–"
"Can we lie down? Please," he begged, "I don't want to talk. I just want you close."
Aside from the signs written across his expression, the sound of his voice alone signalled that something was wrong. Which was precisely why Ellie didn't push him to talk and instead helped give him exactly what was requested by obliging without a word.
Her fingers worked on the buttons of Stefano's dress shirt from the seated position in his lap. His half-opened eyes were fixated on her as Ellie worked, thankful more than words could ever describe for the angel taking care of him. Expressing gratitude was on the tip of his tongue, but every time he opened his mouth to speak, Stefano fell back into silence. But before Ellie moved off his lap, a hand went to the back of her neck, guiding her closer. They shared a brief, gentle kiss. It didn't nearly make up for the words he could not say, but Ellie appreciated it nonetheless.
With the shirt now discarded, she moved off his lap and slowly lowered herself to the ground, removing his dress shoes. It wasn't long before he stood, and Ellie worked on his belt and dress pants, adding them to the pile of discarded clothes.
Stefano walked to his side of the bed and crawled under the covers. A quiet breath of relief escaped his lips as Ellie made her way onto the mattress and instantly cuddled up with him.
"Ti amo." I love you.
"Ti amo anch'io." I love you too.
The following morning, Ellie woke to an empty bed. She had become accustomed to such a thing – but it never made it any easier. Pancake had slipped her way into the bedroom at some point and was happily curled up and sleeping away on Stefano's pillow. She gave her cat a little scratch on the head before getting out of bed. As much as worrying over the man she loved, staying in bed all day was the last thing that would help. Ellie knew that – even if she only wanted to desperately hide under the covers.
And so, Ellie forced herself to stay busy throughout the day – unable to do so by working at the hospital due to budget cuts limiting her hours, something she thought not long ago was for the best so she could use the time to apply for med school. But now, she wished her gruelling work hours were taking up her time. Instead, she cleaned everything in the apartment, organized shelving that didn't need it, and cleaned again. Every corner of the apartment was cleaned, organized, cleaned again, and reorganized.
"Are you okay, Nora? You seem tense."
Ellie released a deep breath, giving her friend an apologetic look. "I am a bit tense," she confessed, "I'm sorry if my attitude is souring the mood."
"Is there anything you want to talk about?" Serafina stirred the batter.
Her mouth opened and shut just as quickly, unsure what to say. Tapping her fingers against the counter, she chewed her bottom lip. Ellie felt like her mind was moving as quick as Serafina whipped the whisk.
"I'm not sure if applying for med school is the best idea right now. Not because I don't want to go but because depending on where I get accepted, I might be away for a while... and I don't know if I want to be away from Stef for that long with everything going on."
"Are you worried about him?"
"He's stressed," Ellie uttered in the slightest whisper as if fearing someone would overhear her saying such a thing, "Very stressed... and I don't know how to help him."
"I don't know much about the business proposal that he and Luca were approached about... but none of it seems... right." Serafina forced herself to fall quiet by pressing lips together, not wanting to risk divulging information she couldn't share. "I'll always be here to talk about my brother. You know that, right? If you're worried, you can always come to me."
"Thank you, I appreciate it." Ellie offered her a smile. "I feel like there's a way I can help or at least try to, but–" Pressing her lips together to stop herself from speaking out of line, she shook off the thought. "It's hard watching him suffer... that's all."
"Well, if there's anything I've learned being around a bunch of know-it-all-men," Serafina leaned forward as the corner of her mouth tugged into a smirk, "It's that most of the time, we know best."
Ellie lay awake that night and stared at the ceiling. She had tried going to bed hours ago, but the thoughts running rampant in her mind kept her wide awake. Tapping her fingers against the bedsheets, she wanted nothing more than to sleep it off. However, Serafina's voice snuck its way into her mind. There were two options she could take; ignore it and hopefully forget, or act.
The decision Ellie made wasn't easy to come to. And it was a choice she would have never made if she knew how it would change their future.
Ellie expected nothing less when she entered the empty apartment. It was nothing unusual, given how the past year or so had gone. Sometimes she wondered if anything would have changed if Stefano had never confessed the truth regarding his feelings – Ellie knew it was a wrong thought to have, given how truly happy she was with him. But she couldn't help it. Back then, they were around each other a thousand percent more. Now she was lucky to catch a glimpse of him during her week.
She knew what she was getting into the moment they confessed their love and spoke it into existence. If they could get through this troubling time during a period of what should have been honeymoon bliss, they would manage anything.
Shaking the thoughts from her head, Ellie headed to the guest room to set aside her things. She had been requested at the apartment to do her job, not let personal relations swarm her mind.
Pushing open the bedroom door, a sigh escaped her lips. Maybe a minute alone was best to calm down before everyone returned, and she had to get to work. She needed to find a better remedy, aside from talking herself down when her anxiety bubbled. But, the one person she wanted to discuss this with was the one she never saw.
Ellie froze in the doorway.
Hanging on the far side of the wall was a garment bag that definitely hadn't been there when she left. Ellie was convinced it was there by mistake, knowing it didn't belong to her. The department store printed on the front was one she never dared to go into due to how expensive it was. It was a place she only marvelled at from the window but knew they'd sniff out her lack of funds if she entered.
But the card attached to the front, addressed to NURSE NORA, left Ellie utterly confused. She walked forward hesitantly until she reached the garment bag and removed the card, revealing a note on the other side.
Frankie will come to get you at 7PM. S.
The letters he left behind were never addressed to Ellie or El or used any loving words. It never upset her that his notes were written this way. It was for her safety. In the slight off chance, the message was intercepted, he didn't want her real name being used and didn't want any hints about their relationship.
However, Ellie didn't need either of those things for her cheeks to rush with heat. Because Stefano was a man that hated paper trails. And yet, he went against his own word every time he left her a note.
The fact that he wrote anything down on paper was proof of his love.
Ellie tucked the note into the hidden pocket of her purse for safekeeping before returning to the garment bag. There was a shoe box on the ground, wrapped with a large red bow and a brand name Ellie couldn't acknowledge at the moment – knowing if she fully processed what else Stefano had bought, she would have passed out before trying anything on.
Fumbling with the zipper, her hands trembled. She tried to steady her breath as her pulse rapidly thumped, wondering what on earth had her so nervous. But her eyes widened as the zipper was pulled to the bottom, unveiling the item underneath.
"Oh my god..."
There was nothing quite like the perfect dress. It was unexplainable how a piece of clothing could make one feel so special. And when Ellie turned to face the mirror an hour later, after fixing up her hair and makeup in the bathroom over a hundred times, she got that special feeling.
The exquisite black dress clung to every curve of her body like a second skin, and the design of the square neckline perfectly accentuated her bust. The material ran down the length of her body and had a daring slit near the back. Her dark hair behind her shoulders perfectly showed off the heart-shaped locket hanging from her neck. Her lips were painted a shade of red – a colour she typically didn't go for but felt the occasion called for matching the soles of her brand-new high heels.
Ellie knew that her new gifts must have cost Stefano a pretty penny. But for once, she didn't feel guilty about him spending such a thing on her – she looked too damn good to think otherwise. She looked like a million bucks and certainly felt like it too.
When Frankie arrived not too long after, he was quick to compliment her appearance – subtly, of course. He never wanted to risk coming across as flirting with the woman his boss was in love with. Ellie found the sudden shyness of the large man adorable, especially when he managed to use so few words and turn a bright shade of red.
As the elevator doors opened to the private garage and Ellie was helped into the backseat of the black SUV, she quickly noted the extra security. Odd, but not unusual. She looked over her shoulder to spot a team member in the trunk.
"Hi, Tony."
"Hi, Miss Nora!" the young man greeted with a welcoming smile.
Ellie wondered how comfortable he was back there, but he showed no signs of discomfort. The drive didn't feel short or long – Ellie didn't bother asking where they were going, assuming she wouldn't be given an answer. Besides, long as she got to spend time with Stefano, she didn't care where they were. She just wanted to be with him.
When they arrived at the destination, and Ellie stepped out of the vehicle, she raised a brow at their surroundings. A private parking garage. If she didn't know any better, she would've assumed they drove around in a complete circle and ended up back at home.
Quickly ushered into an elevator, Ellie was sardined between a handful of large men – standing in front, behind and on either side of her body. It seemed excessive, to say the least. Especially since they all had large weapons hidden under their suit jackets, strapped to their torsos. But as long as the journey led to Stefano, she would put up with the excess.
And thankfully, her wishful thinking came true.
The elevator doors opened to a beautiful entryway from what she could see around the large bodyguards standing in her way. When they stepped aside, her assumptions proved correct; a crystal chandelier hung from the tall ceiling, gold frames hung on the walls, and her heels echoed against the perfect marble flooring.
She followed Frankie's lead further into the space. The question of where Stefano was on the tip of her tongue. But just as she was about to ask, her answer came into view.
Standing a few feet away was the love of her life, sporting his ever-charming and sinful smile. Dressed in his standard suit attire, Ellie quickly noticed one item missing. He didn't wear the usual button-down shirt underneath. Instead, under his suit jacket, Stefano wore his favourite clothing item of all – his PANCAKES #1 FAN t-shirt.
Ellie bit the inside of her cheek, doing all she could to keep her giggles contained. But while she sported a look of amusement, Stefano was clouded by lust and desire. As he walked towards her, meeting her steps halfway, Stefano signalled to the men standing along the perimeter of the room, and instantly they all turned around.
Before Ellie could utter a word, her lips were smothered by a kiss. Her body melted against his touch, leaving her thankful for his hand that sprawled across her back while the other rested on the nape of her neck, keeping her body upright.
"I am the luckiest man in the world," he whispered before kissing her again.
Ellie felt like she was floating on the cloud. While their time together in the past year had been far less than they had imagined, they still made it work and found every spare second to spend together. But an underlying, unknown presence always lingered, stopping them from thoroughly enjoying their present moments together.
But tonight, even within the first sixty seconds, felt completely different than any other – it felt entirely like their night together... even with a bunch of armed guards standing in the room, facing the wall like children in a timeout.
As their lips parted for a necessary breath, Ellie was pleased to find that her transfer-proof red lip product stood the test of time. "That was quite the greeting," she said, fixing the straps of her dress.
"It's hard to contain myself when you look so irresistible, my love," he whispered, just for her ears to hear.
Her cheeks flushed. "I think that's all the dress' doing."
"No, it's you. It's all you, my love."
"Well," she cleared her throat, "I think it deserves some compliments. I can't believe you bought this dress and the shoes. Stef, it's too much."
"Nonsense."
"It's not nonsense. I appreciate it, but you don't have to–"
"Do you like it?"
Ellie nodded. "I love it – are you kidding me?"
"Then it's worth every penny."
Catching a glance at his shirt reminded sent an instant flood of giggles back into her system. "I can't believe you're wearing that!"
Stefano raised a brow, tilting his head slightly to the side. "Why not? It's my favourite item of clothing. Now, come on," he extended his hand and waited until their fingers intertwined before continuing, "Our table awaits."
"Where are we, anyway?"
"The newest investment property of Romano Enterprises. The deal was finalized and signed earlier this morning."
"You bought a..." Ellie's eyes roamed the walls as they walked, "palace?"
"A hotel."
Walking towards another set of double doors, they stepped outside, greeted by the warm night air. Rose petals scattered across the ground, leading to a beautifully set table adorned with two place settings and a romantic glow provided by candles.
"On our first date, we had dinner overlooking the water, with a view of the city in front of us. But tonight," he led the way past the table and towards the balcony, "we overlook it all."
"Wow," she breathed, "this is beautiful."
"I'm glad you think so because the penthouse is all ours." Stefano rested his arm around her waist, pulling her body into his side, "Whenever you want to escape the apartment, we'll come here. I know it's likely not much of a change, but it's something for now while our home is built."
"What are you talking about?"
"Mm?"
"You said..." she licked her lips, "while our home is built. What home?"
Stefano's lips tugged with a cheeky grin. "Ah, yes, that." Dropping his arm from her waist, her reached inside his jacket pocket and handed Ellie a folded document. "These are just the rough plans, but the land has already been purchased."
Slowly unfolding the piece of paper, her eyes scanned the document before her. House designs. Sketches of what the front could look like. Notes on the size of the property. Pictures of what the land looked like now. She blinked, utterly confused yet intrigued all at the same time.
"You bought us land to build a house?"
He nodded.
"W-why?"
"Because that apartment is no place for us to spend our future. You don't deserve being hidden away in there, and I don't want us needing a full team of security so we can stand on the balcony and hold hands," he said. "If you want a place to house a thousand animals – done. If you want a garden to grow fruits and vegetables – done. If you want your own bedroom so you can sneak away from me," he teased, "it's done, El. Whatever you want in this house, on this land, we'll build."
Her voice dropped to a whisper, "Stef, this is... more amazing than I have the words for. But, how are we supposed to plan a future given everything going on right now?"
"Because a promising lead has found its way to the table."
"Oh," was all she uttered, not wanting to get her hopes up.
"This is it, El." He smiled. "My way to end all this mess – save us from ever having to deal with that monster again. I wouldn't tell you this if I didn't believe it to be true... El," his head dipped forward, "This will be over soon."
"Really?"
"Really, my love," he confirmed. "And do you know what I want to do the minute it is complete?"
"What?"
"I want us to get on a plane and leave the country for a bit. Go see all the places we wanted to travel together." His smile faltered, noting how her eyes glossed over. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing, I just..." she sniffled, "I just miss you. I know this is the life I should have expected, but–"
Stefano shook his head. "It's not," he interjected, "It's not the life, El. What has been going on is nothing I ever want myself, my people, or my business anywhere near. And once this is over, I promise it will never be like this again."
"But what if it is? What if something else comes up that takes you away like this did?"
"Then I'll step back from the business." Before she could reject the idea, he quickly added, "I don't want to live a life where I'm taken from you like that ever again. Am I proud of what I have built? Yes. But the beauty of building it all once means I can do it again. Keeping it as it is will never be worth it if you're not by my side."
"You would give it all up for me?"
"Yes." There was no hesitation or doubt in his reply. "I know marriage isn't something neither of us need, but I want you to know that if you ever change your mind, I'd marry you in a fucking heartbeat, El."
Ellie turned her head, looking up at him with widened eyes.
She had never been one way or the other when it came to marriage – she was simply indifferent to it. Growing up, everyone around her got married for their future together, including having children. But since having children was never in her plans, Ellie assumed marriage would follow the same result. Of course, as she got older, she knew that wasn't the only reason two individuals decided to marry. However, her opinion on the matter remained the same. She would happily sign a document if it was important to her partner. If it wasn't, they'd carry on just how things were.
On their first date, Stefano seemed to express the same outlook on marriage – and the two had never discussed the topic since that night. So hearing such a word for the first time in almost four years surprised her.
"You would want to marry me?" she asked, "Are you sure?"
"Of course, I'm sure." Stefano chuckled.
"I thought you didn't like a paper trail."
"Mm, you got me there," he hummed, "How about I just buy you a diamond ring and get to call you my wife... how does that sound?"
"It sounds perfect," she confessed without a second thought.
"Yeah?"
Ellie nodded. "I mean... it's not scary to think about marriage with you because I already know I want to spend the rest of our lives together. So, I guess it just sounds... right."
"I'm glad you think so because I've been calling you my wife in my head for months now."
"Shut up," she giggled, cheeks blushing madly over the comment, "No, you haven't!"
"I don't lie, El. You know that."
"You have not been calling me that in your head!" Ellie shook her head at the thought. "Next thing I know, you'll say you already have a ring!" Her eyes widened, noting the smug smirk that tugged on his lips. "Stef... don't fuck with me right now." She wasn't a big swearer – but curses easily slipped past her lips when the situation called for it or when she was utterly shocked
"I'm not fucking with you, my love. I've had it for a while now."
"Since when?"
"Bought it the same night I got that." His eyes looked down at the necklace hanging from her neck. "They went well together."
Ellie sucked in a harsh breath as her brows knitted over the confession. "But when you gave me this necklace, we weren't together... and our future wasn't known. What if we never ended up where we are now?"
"Then it would have stayed in its box." He shrugged. "You're the only woman I would ever dream of giving a ring to. If we hadn't ended up where we are now, there wouldn't have been anyone else. It's always been you or something." Stefano gave her a small smile. "I don't mean to overwhelm you with a conversation like this, and I apologize if I have."
"I'm not overwhelmed," she clarified. "You just keep surprising me... from the moment we met to now. I guess it's just..." Ellie paused, pressing her lips together as she tried to find the right words, "I thought I'd get married if it meant something to the person I was with... you know, if they wanted to. I always thought I'd be indifferent about it. But I want that, with you," she said, "I don't need a big wedding or to sign a document. I like the idea of something small – just with the people closest to us and more of a commitment ceremony."
"I think that sounds perfect."
Ellie bit her bottom lip, surprised by how easy the conversation was. "And I want it to happen after everything is done and handled. I don't need you to start screaming about us from the rooftops, but I don't want to hide away completely."
"Understood, my love."
"So, you really have a ring?"
"I carry it with me all the time. Do you want to see it?"
"No," she quickly replied. "Well, maybe," Ellie pursed her lips, thinking it over. "No." She shook her head. "No, not yet. Not until we're ready."
"Alright, I'll keep it in my pocket then," he teased, nudging her side. "Now... shall we eat?"
Ellie and Stefano spent the entire weekend hidden away in the penthouse suite. More than anything, she was happy to spend time with him – have him all to herself. It felt like the perfect moment for them to have alone, especially with Stefano's recent developments. Buying land for a house. Suggesting the idea of marriage. Admitting he already had a ring.
The more Ellie thought about it, the more it all made sense.
Surprisingly, she even started daydreaming about white dresses she could wear.
When the weekend had concluded, and they were forced to return to their normal lives, Ellie wasn't nearly as sad as she expected to be. Having concrete plans for their future helped – and Stefano's promise that they would sneak away to the hotel for at least one night every month.
"I never got the chance to thank you, by the way."
Serafina tilted her head slightly. "For what?"
"For talking to your brother about me. I don't think we would be where we are today without you and Frankie."
"I'll always jump at the opportunity to tell my brother he's being an idiot," she teased. "He would have come to his senses eventually... but I was happy to give him the push because men are idiots." Looking down at the child sleeping with his head on her lap, she cooed, "But not you, Gio... no, not you, my sweet boy."
"He's such a good sleeper."
"I have no idea how I ended up so lucky – my brother and I were screamers. We hated anything that revolved around sleeping." Serafina smiled at her child. "This perfect little angel... he loves to sleep."
Ellie smiled over the words she heard. It was amazing that despite Gio not being her biological child, Serafina always spoke of him like he was. "Well, his Aunt and Uncle certainly love to spoil him whenever he stays over."
"Auntie Nora... oh gosh, it's just so cute every time I hear it!" Serafina squealed. "And since you're still on this thank-you-Serafina-for-being-so-amazing-tour, you have to promise me one thing."
"Yes?"
"If you and my brother ever decide to get married one day... can I please be a bridesmaid?"
Ellie laughed. "Yes, of course."
"I don't care how tacky asking you made me sound... I can't wait!"
"We've talked about maybe having a ceremony one day – more of a celebration of our love."
Serafina's eyes widened. "Oh my god!"
"But it's not something we're doing next week!" Ellie quickly warned. "It probably won't happen until our tenth anniversary."
"What about your fifth? Because then, if you count the first two years where you two were hopelessly in love but not admitting to it, I only have to wait a year and a half!" Serfaina exclaimed. "Oh, come on! I totally stand behind whatever decision you guys make, but someone in this family has to get married out of genuine love. Please let it be my brother! My cold, emotionless, heartless brother!"
"Alright, I'll see what I can–"
"Where is she?" Stefano's voice echoed throughout the apartment. He abruptly stopped in the entryway, eyes narrowed in on the two women before storming toward them.
"Watch your volume, brother," Serafina scolded, "Your nephew is here."
Ellie studied the angered man's face – she had seen him get upset plenty of times... but never had his anger ever been directed anywhere near her direction. It was odd and unsettling, to say the least. And given the way the two left things earlier in the morning on a delightful and satisfied level, Ellie couldn't understand how things could have changed so drastically.
Stefano looked at his sister. "Out. Now."
"Stef!" Ellie gasped. "That is no way to speak to someone!"
His glare was enough to silence an entire room and send the most powerful men cowering away in the corner. But Ellie wasn't one to cower away from the man she knew inside and out.
"What has gotten into you?"
"Oh, you'll find out soon," he spat venomously. "Out, Serafina!"
"Stef–"
"It's fine, Nora," the woman said softly, collecting her things. "I'll call you later, okay?"
Ellie gave her an apologetic smile as she hurried out of the room. Aside from the fact that he was in the presence of a child, Ellie took issue with his entire demeanour. It was no way for him to act or speak to anyone without a right – especially when it involved his sister and sleeping nephew.
Once Serafina was behind the elevator doors, Ellie looked at the angered man and asked, "What is your problem?"
"El..." his eyes narrowed as he stepped forward, "What have you done?"
...yeah so uh... oopsie!
