Part Sixteen
Marcus took Carters body and dumped it in the trunk of his car.
He drove home feeling proud of himself although he wasn't sure what he was going to do with it.
The body parts from his other victims were still in garbage bags in a cupboard in his apartment.
It was beginning to smell bad so he had to light candles in each room.
When he got home he had to make sure the street was quiet before he took out the body. He had to go inside to fetch a blanket before bringing it in. It was coming up to ten o'clock and he was getting ready for bed when his door buzzed.
Who the hell was it?
It was Melissa.
"Hey handsome! I thought I'd surprise you with a visit. Sorry it's late but I missed you too much." She pecked him on the lips and walked in.
"Hello gorgeous. It's cool, I've missed you too."
He pulled her towards him and kissed her passionately. They sat down and watched TV together whilst eating a tub of ice cream.
"What's that strange smell?" She frowned.
Marcus knew what she could smell.
He wasn't expecting visitors and hadn't properly taken care of the body.
"I forgot to take the garbage out. It's been sat there for a few days. I'll take it out tomorrow."
"That's gross!"
Marcus was happy to see Melissa.
She had gone to the bathroom when he heard a scream.
Marcus rushed to see what had happened. A hand had fallen out of a garbage bag and out of the cupboard onto the floor.
"What the fuck is this?"
Before he could stop her she had begun to sift through the rest of the bags. She screamed again when she found another hand covered in blood.
"Marcus?!"
"I can explain."
She'd brought her hands up to her face and blood stained her cheeks.
"How the fuck can you explain this? Who the hell are you?"
Marcus felt sick.
"I have to call the cops."
"No Melissa."
As she tried to walk past he grabbed her arm and swung her round to face him.
"You're not going anywhere. Just let me explain."
"Marcus I don't know who you are anymore." She started to cry.
He had never seen her cry before and it was horrible.
"I'm not who you think I am. You probably think I'm some top guy who works in real estates and has the life of pie. When really I don't. I suffer from OCD and anxiety and I've done some bad things. Killing people is one of them."
"Please say this is a joke." She paced back and forth.
"It's not. I'm at war with myself Melissa. I don't want to lie to you because I like you but I'm a monster. My head is screwed up."
She was speechless.
He couldn't let her tell anyone what he'd done.
"You truly are messed up Marcus. I don't know why I ever fell for you."
Those words hit him hard.
He wanted to grab hold of her and stab her. But he knew he could never hurt her. He would just have to keep her hostage.
"I'm not gonna say I'm a good person because I'm not anymore. I've become someone who I'm afraid of. Yesterday I found out who killed my brother and this evening I killed him."
Melissa looked terrified.
"I understand that you're afraid of me now and I'm not the person you thought I was but Melissa you've got to believe I'd never hurt you."
"So you think I'm going to accept the fact you're a murderer and we can live happily ever after?"
"No I don't expect that. I just know we can find some way around this."
"I highly doubt we can Marcus. I was really starting to like you too."
He stepped towards her and she flinched. "I won't hurt you."
He reached up to her face and cupped her cheek.
"I was starting to believe you and me could be something. Even though we haven't known each other very long I've fallen for you and I can't stop. When I'm with you the thoughts I suffer from dissappear. You make me feel better."
He gazed into her eyes and wanted to kiss her again one last time. She looked back at him with confusion.
He had no idea what was going through her head right now.
"How many people have you killed?"
Marcus didn't know whether to lie or tell the truth. She must be able to guess judging by the number of bags.
"I don't want to tell you."
"Tell me."
He mumbled "Ten."
"What the fuck?! Were they innocent?"
"Most of them yes. You have to understand that the voices told me to do it and I have been suffering from nightmares which have driven me to insanity."
"You sound crazy."
"That's probably cause I am." He looked at her and admired her beauty.
How could he keep her hostage?
She deserved better than him.
"Just go." He moved out of her way.
She hesitated and went to the door.
"I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet. I just want you to know that although I'm scared and disgusted by you right now that I care for you an awful much."
She looked back at him and left.
That was probably the last time he'd see her.
Marcus hated himself.
What have I done?
He stared at himself in the bathroom mirror.
The person staring back was no longer him.
It was an empty shell of a being.
He looked like a zombie.
Why did I do this?
He headbutted the mirror several times until it cracked and glassy tendrils appeared.
Thoughts raced through his mind telling him that he had to do what he did otherwise bad things would have happened.
And they had in the end even though he obeyed them.
He had no one to talk to.
All he could think of was Melissa.
He knew he shouldn't message her because she wouldn't reply but he had to make sure she was home safe.
She didn't reply and he fell into an undisturbed sleep.
