The Words (Short Fic.) Part 1
OC: McKenna Quinn
This is the first one-shot I did Its been published on my profile as a standalone book for forever, but Its so long that I'm breaking it up into a couple parts and republishing it here. I took the old version down just now. It was all thrown together and hard to read so I figured it would be best just to add it into here. I don't know how many parts it will be broken into. It was originally over 11k words so my guess is 3.
here is the description that was on the book.
"Mckenna (OC) has lost her husband and begins to have feelings for his best friend Killian."
and here is the authors note that went with it:
A/N: Just a Disclaimer: I do not speak Irish/Gaelic XD I relied on google and google translate for whatever phrases and words I used in this fic. I just thought it would be fun to have Killian speak Irish/Gaelic So don't scream at me if they are wrong. Scream at google.
You wouldn't have thought, with the way people were laughing, and drinking, and the cheerful music, that just 4 days ago Mckenna Quinn had just lost her husband of 6 years, but that was how your typical Irish wake went and Mckenna tried.. She tried so hard to be happy, and laugh with her friends, and family but she sat to herself with her fourth drink of the night watching the same slideshow of the same 100 pictures of her husband Gil for the 20th time that night. God she missed him, his smile, his laugh, the way his eyes lit up when he'd come home from work and their daughter Rylee would throw her arms around him and squeal. Her mind went to her daughter, just 5 years old and left fatherless, her eyes welled and she dabbed at them with a kleenex. She felt the sofa shift as new weight was added. She glanced sideways at her husbands best friend Killian Jones and gave him a friendly smile.
"Hello love." He said.
"Hi." She responded and threw back the rest of her drink.
"How are you doing?" Killian asked.
"I'm doing okay." Mckenna smiled through the tears that threatened to fall. Killian sighed.
"I love you Kenna, but you are a horrible liar." He said. Mckenna leaned her head on his shoulder and sniffled.
"I'm falling apart Killian."
"I know darling." Killian whispered and put his arm around her shoulders pulling her close.
"Thank you for doing this here. My house.. I just..i've been staying with my sister you know."
"I know, and you're welcome. Anything I can do to help you and Ryles you just let me know." He said softly running his hand through her honey brown hair. "Speaking of the little devil is she with your sister?"
"Yeah." Mckenna replied.
"Jenna couldn't bother to show up for this?" Killian asked with just a hint of anger. Jenna, Mckenna's older sister never cared for Gil and didn't want to be here for this.
"Its okay Killian, I needed someone to watch Rylee anyways, she couldn't be here for this." Mckenna said in her sisters defense.
"Aye that is true I suppose. How is she taking it?" Killian asked.
"She understands that daddy was sick and that he had to go, shes taking it surprisingly well but I know she misses him."
"We all do love." Killian said and thumbed a tear away from his own eye.
"I need another drink." Mckenna sighed.
"I'll get it love. You sit here." Killian said and stood up and walked behind his bar. He returned with a bottle and a couple of glasses. He sat down and opened the bottle and poured them both some and handed her, her drink and held up his glass.
"To Gil?" he asked. Mckenna nodded and knocked her glass against his.
"To Gil." She smiled and tipped the glass back and then gasped at the burn.
"What is this??" She asked.
"It's a wake love, its Irish Whiskey." He chuckled.
"I think you all forget I'm not Irish." McKenna said with a giggle.
"Aye." He smirked and poured her another round.
"Are you trying to get me drunk Jones?" McKenna asked.
"Again, darling its a Wake, everyone is drunk."
McKenna smirked.
People had started leaving and eventually it was just Killian and McKenna left behind. Mckenna was helping Killian pick up the bar.
"Kenna, I got it really you can go." Killian smiled. "Go be with Rylee."
"Rylee is sleeping, I don't want to wake her." Mckenna said and pushed a stool back in its place. "Besides, I still feel pretty tipsy, I'd rather not drive." She added as she picked up a few empty bottles and threw them into the trash.
"Probably for the best." Killian shrugged. "Are you going to be okay for tomorrow?"
"Yeah. Well.. I mean I have to be. I mean.. I survived tonight, tomorrow is where things get really..real you know?" Mckenna said and busied herself with other things in the bar.
"Kenna." Killian said. Mckenna ignored him and frantically cleaned.
"Kenna.." He said again. Mckenna picked up some more bottles.
"Kenna!" he shouted. Mckenna turned around and dropped one of the bottles and it shattered on the floor. She bent down to pick it up. Killian crouched down beside her to help. Mckenna picked up a piece of glass
and it cut her finger.
"Ah! Bhitseach!" She spat and held her hand. Killian pulled the towel off of his shoulder and applied it to her hand. He smiled at her
"An bhfuil Gaeilge agat?" Do you speak Gaelic? He asked. Mckenna gave him a quick nod
"Beagáinín." A little. She replied. "Gil..was teaching me." She said and sat on the floor with the towel in her hands.
"It's just me and you love, you don't have to put up some bullshit smile. I know you are hurting." Killian said. Mckenna looked up at him. Her sea green eyes finally shedding the tears that she had been holding onto all night.
"I miss him so fucking much Killian." She sobbed and pulled her knees up and tucked them under her chin. Killian crawled across the floor at her and wrapped his arms around her.
"I know love." He said his voice breaking.
"How am I supposed to do this without him? We had a plan. College, marriage, Kids. We were trying for another, Gil wanted a boy. We were supposed to grow old together. He wasn't supposed to go! Why did he have to go?" She cried choking on her tears. Killian held her as close as she possibly could and they cried together over the loss of their loved one. Killian wiped away her tears with his thumbs.
"We'll get through it." He said. Mckenna raised her shaky hands and wiped his tears away and held his face in her hands.
"Promise me." She pleaded.
"I promise." He said and took her hand in his and kissed it.
four months later.
Mckenna sat in the middle of the living room packing up the last of the house, she couldn't do it. She couldn't live in this house anymore, it felt so cold without Gil.
"Baby hand me those books over there." Mckenna instructed her 5 year old to hand her the books she was sitting next to. Rylee picked up the books and walked over and handed them to her.
"Why do we have to move Mum?" She asked. "I like our house."
"I know, baby. Its just, I can't afford the house by myself. I know you don't really understand that. We just need a smaller house."
"But what if someone else lived here?" Rylee asked with a hopeful smile.
"Who would live here with us Ryles?"
"Uncle Killy!" Rylee shrieked.
"Uh.. what?" Mckenna asked.
"Rylee bear!" Killian said as he entered the living room and scooped up the giggling girl.
Oh..Okay
"Almost done?" He asked looking down at Mckenna. She nodded.
"Yeah. If you want to help, I could use a set of hands that aren't covered in grape jelly." She smirked.
"Actually.. I was hoping I could talk to you for a moment." Killian said.
"Yeah, sure. Watch the tv for a little Rylee." Mckenna said and stood up dusting herself off and walking into the kitchen with Killian. She reached into the fridge and grabbed a beer and handed it to him. He opened it and took a sip leaning against the counter.
"So whats up?" Mckenna asked.
"Have you told her you aren't just leaving the house you're leaving town?" Killian asked. Mckenna sighed.
"No, Killian.. I haven't she's five she wont understand. Its only 3 hours away. I couldn't find the right apartment."
"Are you sure that's all there is to it?" Killian asked and crossed his arms.
"Killian. Don't go there." Mckenna said and scowled.
"I have to Kenna! You haven't given me much of a choice you've avoided my calls for a bloody month!" Killian hissed. "So you can't honestly expect me to believe that this doesn't have anything to do with what happened a month ago."
Mckenna kicked the left front tire of her car and screamed. Of course her car would break down now. She sighed in relief as Killians car pulled up right as the sky opened and it started pouring. Killian rolled his window down.
"Just get in. We'll come get it tomorrow." He said. Mckenna ran to the car and opened the passengers side door and slid in and slammed the door.
"Fuck my life." She sighed.
"Its not all bad. At least I was still up. We need to go to Jenna's to get Rylee?" Killian asked. Mckenna shook her head.
"No, Jenna's is taking her for the night. It's just me..." She mumbled.
"Why don't you come home with me tonight. So you don't have to be alone in that house."
Mckenna shrugged.
"Yeah, sure." She said and smiled.
Killian drove them back to her place and Mckenna walked in and slipped her muddy boots off at the door and made herself at home on the couch Killian walked over with his box of chinese take out and an extra fork.
"Whatcha got there?" Mckenna asked.
"Orange chicken." He smirked. "Have you eaten?"
"Not yet."she replied. Killian handed her a fork and sat down next to her. Mckenna stabbed a piece of chicken with her fork and shoved it in her mouth.
"Honestly woman, its just chinese." Killian laughed.
"Well, I've been eating Ramen noodles for weeks so Rylee doesn't have to." Mckenna shrugged. Killian sighed and put the take out box on the coffee table.
"We talked about this Kenna!" He said.
"I'm not taking your money Killian. We'll be fine once we sell the house." Mckenna shrugged.
"Why don't you and Ryles stay with me for a while?"
"Because Killian, we are fine."
"No. you are not. You are struggling."
"Yeah well.. Without Gil it's been a little rough."
"You need help. It's okay to admit that." Killian said and pinched the bridge of his nose.
"No. Killian. We are fine."
"No! You bloody aren't and Gil would be rolling over in his damn grave if he knew I wasn't doing what I can to help you and Rylee." Killian said. "How much do you need?"
"Killian for the last time I am not taking your money."
"Yes. You are. How much."
"No!. Okay, I'm just going to go home." Mckenna said and stood up.
"Kenna don't go." Killian sighed.
"Killian you don't need to constantly look over me and Rylee. We will be okay. Gil would not hate you."
"But I would." Killian said and stood. "I would hate me." He said stepping forward and taking Mckenna's shoulders in his hands.
"I love you guys." He said.
"We love you too Killian. Rylee is coo coo for cocoa puffs over you."
"No.. Kenna, you aren't understanding me. You mean to tell me you haven't felt it too? Over the last three months? Everytime, I am anywhere near you my heart beats so fast I think it's going to come out of my damn chest. When you touch me, it feels like electric shocks. You don't feel this too?" He asked and place a hand over her cheek. if Mckenna was being honest with herself, she did. But she felt so guilty about it, this was Gil's best friend. She put her hand over Killian's and gave him a smile.
"Killian. I do..I feel the same. I just don't know ho-" She started to say but was cut off by a sudden searing kiss. It wasn't just a peck. It was an open mouth, teeth scraping, tongue dancing kiss and she found herself not being able to stop.
"I can't get you out of my Goddamn head Kenna." Killian mumbled.
"Me either." Mckenna sighed and crashed her lips back into his.
"God it's so fucking hot in here!" She groaned and broke away from the kiss and pulled her tee shirt over her head. Killians fingers went to the button on her pants, they snapped open and he pulled them down and she stepped out of them. He peeled off his tee shirt. Mckenna ran her hands up his chest and linked her arms around his neck as his lips trailed kisses and bites all over her chest. He backed her into the couch and the two of them tumbled down onto it. She reached down and unbuckled his belt and pulled it through the loops and tossed it aside he did the rest from there and his pants and boxers ended up over the lampshade of the lamp on the side table dimming the room. Mckenna hooked her legs around his waist. For the first time in three months something felt right. Everything felt right. Mckenna raked her fingernails up his back as he moved with her She pressed her sweaty forehead to his.
"Tá grá agam duit" (I love you) He whispered to her.
"So what if it does have something to do with what happened a month ago Killian? I can't do this. Not with you." She said.
"Why not Kenna??" Killian asked.
"Because you are Gil's best friend! It's wrong!" She hissed.
"I love you." Killian said. "Please. If there is any part of you that loves me too.. Don't do this. Don't go."
"I have to Killian. I can't do this. Not to Gil."
"We already did it! You can't take it back."
"I know that! Don't you think I know that?!"
"Let go, Kenna. He's gone. It fucking sucks. I miss him too but he's gone What are you still holding on to?"
"Why are you guys yelling?" Rylee asked coming in the kitchen.
"Rylee, please go watch tv."
"No, I want to know what you are talking about!" Rylee said and stomped her foot.
"Don't sass your mother. Go!" Killian snapped. Rylee scurried off into the living room.
"You didn't have to yell at her Killian!"
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. Just please, McKenna. Think about it. My offer still stands you two could move in with me."
"No, Killian. I've thought about it. We are moving next week. End of story." Mckenna said and looked away from him. Killian shook his head.
"Fine. Whatever." he grumbled.
"Killian don't do this I don't want to leave on bad terms."
"Then don't fucking leave at all!" Killian said.
"Stop Fighting!" Rylee screeched from the living room.
"You need to go. You are upsetting her. I will call you before we leave." Mckenna said and crossed her arms.
"Yeah. Don't bother." Killian scoffed and walked out of the house slamming the door behind him.
Mckenna wiped the tear that rolled down her cheek away and walked into the living room to finish packing She looked at the picture of Gil on the tv stand.
"I'm so sorry.. Gil." She mumbled.
To be continued..
