“What?” Sam asked.
“I’m not leaving you in this house. You don’t want me to call your brother? I won’t if you agree to come and stay with me until he gets back. You don’t need to be alone.”
“My dad is not going to be okay with that.”
Killian sighed and picked up his Wallet from the counter and opened it throwing a couple of large bills on the table.
“This should keep him busy.”
“But what about the food you just brought?”
“That will keep him busy too. Go on, pack up. I’ll grab the wet clothes we’ll wash them at my place.” Killian said.
Sam was unsure but she turned around and went to her room to grab some things.

-------------------------------------------------------------

When Sam walked into Killian’s house, she felt as though maybe she shouldn’t be there. Everything was nice, and orderly..expensive? And Sam was just...Sam.
“You live here by yourself?” She asked.
“Aye. Just me..” Killian said. Sam looked in the corner of the living room, at a few kids toys.
“You got kids?” She asked.
“A nephew.” Killian smiled. “I watch him every other weekend.”
“Oh..” Sam said.
“Here, I’ll show you where you can put your things.”
“Really.. I can sleep on the couch tonight and then go to my friend Regina’s for the rest of the time.” Sam shrugged.
“I can’t keep an eye on you from Regina’s. The deal was you stay here and you won't want to sleep on the couch when Sebastian is here or he’ll climb all over you. You can have the guest room.” Killian said leading her down the hall.
“Okay..” Sam mumbled and walked into the guest room setting her bag on the floor beside the dresser.

“Are you cold?” Killian asked as he noticed she was holding onto  the sleeves of her sweater with her finger tips. “It's almost 70 degrees outside.”
Sam shook her head. “I just like sweaters…How far away is the school from here?”
She wasn’t really paying attention on the drive over here.
“Its a few blocks away, I can take you if you actually want to go in the morning. Maybe skipping tomorrow would be a good idea? Go back on Monday if you’re feeling up to it.”
Sam just shrugged.
“You’re quiet, when you aren’t yelling at me.”  Killian smiled. “Will said you weren’t a talker. When's the last time you ate?”

“Yesterday..”
“When yesterday?” Killian asked.
“Morning.. I told Will I ate dinner.. But there wasn’t enough left and He works really hard so I wanted him to have the last of it..” Sam said.
“Food allergies?”
Sam shook her head.
“Anything you don’t like?” Killian asked.
Sam shook her head again.
“Alright, if you want to watch the tv in the living room while I make dinner you can.” Killian offered.
“I’m fine.” Sam said and sat on the bed.
“Last time you sa-”
“I’m fine.” Sam said again. “I don’t like the tele much..”
“Okay then..” Killian said awkwardly and walked into the kitchen to start dinner.

Killian set the plates on the table.
“Sam, dinner is ready.” He called but there was no answer. Which was a little unnerving because of earlier events. He walked down the hall towards the guest room, the door was open just a crack, he peeked in the room and Sam was sitting on the bed with her headphones on and a text book in her lap. Her brown eyes looked confused, annoyed maybe, Killian got a quick glance at the textbook, Algebra. He laughed to himself no wonder she looked confused and annoyed.
“Hey..” He said and opened the door a little and then he realized that he could hear Sam's music clearly through her headphones so there was no way she could hear him. He leaned in and tapped her shoulder completely unprepared for the startled shriek that erupted from her throat, The textbook was slammed shut and launched at him. He dodged it quick enough so it hit the wall instead.
She ripped her headphones off her head throwing them down instantly ready to defend herself

Killian stepped back with his hands ups. Sam’s eyes were huge, and her chest rose and fell rapidly and she was ready to fight.
“Sam.. its just me.” Killian said softly.
What the hell had this girl been through?
Sam caught her breath and picked up her text book putting in on the bed. Her face was bright red, obviously embarrassed.
“Sorry.” She mumbled.
“Its alright..dinner is ready.” Killian said. Sam walked past him, without another word, to the kitchen table.

The two of them sat eating in silence, Sam had cleaned almost all of her plate in the first few minutes like she’d never see food again.
“I’m glad you like it. Sebastian won’t touch it because of the broccoli” Killian chuckled.
“Food is food..” Sam said quietly.
Killian frowned.
“If you’re still hungry there is more out there.”
“I’m fine.” Sam said and put her fork down as she set her fork down her sleeve caught on the corner of the table and pushed it up a little. Killian looked down and saw a few scars on her inner wrist. Sam quickly pushed her sleeve down and put her arms under the table out of view.
Killian cleared his throat.
“I..used to be an algebra tutor, I could help you. If you’d like.” He said.
“I don’t need help.” Sam said keeping her eyes down. Killian felt like maybe it wasn’t just the math she was talking about. She didn’t feel she needed his help at all, and although he thought otherwise he wasn’t going to push.

--------------------------------------------------------

The next morning

“Honestly Killian, you didn’t have to do that.” Will sighed as Killian told him that he’d invited Sam to stay with him and left money to keep their father busy. He didn’t tell him all the details, but he did feel it was important for him to at least know where his sister was.
“Well, when I got there, she seemed a little unsettled.” Killian said, it wasn’t a complete lie. “I just didn’t think she should be there by herself.”
“Well Thank you mate. Really, thank you. I was pretty worried about leaving her for so long. I’m surprised she agreed to go with you.” Will chuckled.
“Oh, me too. You weren’t kidding about her being so quiet, It's like I’m sharing my house with a ghost. The only reason I know she’s here is the floor in that room creaks a little.”
“Well, it could be worse. Don’t let it bother you. She only really talks to me, her friend Regina, and that loser Keith she hangs around.”
Killian felt his jaw twitch at the mention of Keith.
“You okay over there?” Will asked.
“Oh.. Yeah. Sorry.” Killian sighed. “Is there anything I can at least try to get her to open up a bit?”
“Not that I can think of, Sammi’s just Sammi, Killian if she doesn’t wanna talk she won’t but don’t take her silence, to mean she doesn’t appreciate what you are doing. She does possibly even more than me.”
“Alright, well I just wanted you to know where she was.” Killian said. “I’ll talk to you later.”
“Sure, mate. Thanks.” Will said and hung up the phone.

That morning Killian found himself hiding all his sharp objects and it wasn’t just because Sebastian would be there tomorrow, he just couldn’t stop thinking of those damn scars on her wrist. Did Will even know about those? He couldn’t help but feel there was something more he should be doing to help Sam, but he didn’t want to push too far and have her leave.

Killian walked down the hall to the guest room after making a light breakfast he figured Sam might want some. He knocked on the door.
“Sam, I’ve made breakfast.” He said.. There was no answer and after last night, Killian was not taking any chances. He went to twist the knob but it was locked. Killian’s mind instantly went to the worst places.

“Sam!” He shouted and hit the door with the side of his fist. “Fuck!” He said and hurried back to the kitchen and pulled out a drawer of spare keys looking for the one to the guest bedroom. He pulled the drawer completely out and emptied it on the counter when he looked up and noticed, Sam with bed hair, and tired glassy eyes looking at him like he’d lost his mind.
“The hell did you lock the door for?!” Killian asked, raising his voice. Sam flinched and her eyes went to the floor.
“Habit.” She mumbled.
“Well you don’t have to lock the door, I won’t open it without your permission..” Killian sighed.
“Sorry.” Sam said softly and eyed the pan of eggs on the stove.
“Are you hungry? I made breakfast..I know you didn’t go to sleep until well after 3 this morning so I figured you weren’t going to school.”
Sam raised an eyebrow at him.
“I was worried.. I wanted to make sure you weren’t going to try anything. I heard you pacing the floor all night. The..floor in that room creaks.”
Sam just shrugged and walked over to the pan of eggs and picked up a random fork from the counter and started eating from the pan.
“No, don’t just shrug Sam.” Killian said. “I think you need some help. I have a friend, he’s a thera-”

“I’m fine.” Sam said with a mouth full of egg.
“No, you aren’t. You tried to kill yourself last night. That is not fine. Those scars on your wrist, are not fine. Does Will even know about those?”
Sam turned away from him.
“I’m going to take that as a no.” Killian sighed. Sam took a few more bites from the pan of eggs before turning back around and walking past Killian, back into the room.

--------------------------

Killian opened his front door and was nearly tackled by his 6 year old Nephew

“Nice to see you too Bastian” Killian chuckled as Liam stepped in.

“Hello little brother” Liam smiled and then raised an eyebrow as he saw Sam dart from the bathroom to the guest room without a word.

“Uhm. Who was that?” Liam asked

“Ah my friend Will is out of town on a job. he didn't want his sister staying alone is all.” Killian sighed

“Are you sure you want to take Sebastian this weekend?” Liam asked.

“Oh yeah, it will be fine. She hardly speaks and only comes out of the room to eat and use the bathroom.” Killian shrugged

“Sounds perfectly healthy” Liam chuckled and looked at Sebastian “Be good for Uncle Killian” he said and ruffled the boys hair. “Call me if you need anything.” He told Killian before leaving.

Killian was in the middle of making dinner, while occasionally checking on Sebastian who was pushing toy cars around his living room contently. Sam had hardly made a sound all day, and Killian was wondering if she was going to make her presence known, when he heard Sebastian's little voice.
“Hi. I’m Sebastian. Do you wanna play cars?”
Killian looked up at Sam who had come out of the room, possibly smelling food and was now cornered by his 6 year old nephew who was holding up a toy truck to Sam and smiling.
“Uhm… Sure.” Sam said and Killian thought he’d fall over dead. She’d have very little to do with him, but she would sit down and play with a 6 year old.

Sebastian squealed and took Sam's hand and led her to the living room to sit down and play. Sam pushed the toy truck around the floor with him and when Sebastian would giggle, Sam would smile and Killian realized it was the first time he’d seen her smile, and she didn’t just smile with her lips, she smiled with her eyes and he wasn’t aware that brown eyes could be so stunning.
He stood there, watching Sam turn into a completely different girl than the girl he’d hardly gotten to know over the past couple days. She was speaking, and laughing and somehow playing trucks, ended with Sam holding Sebastian upside down by his ankles carrying him around the living room laughing along with him, She was more alive than she had been since he’d met her, and she was beautiful.

Killian had completely forgot about dinner, until he started to smell something burning, and then the smoke detectors went off as smoke billowed out of the kitchen.
“Shit!” Killian hissed and quickly moved the pot of burning mac and cheese off the burner and shut off the stove as Sebastian was hacking and coughing. Sam hurried around the living room and opened the windows to let the smoke out. She opened the front door and moved it back and forth trying to air out the room as Killian frantically dug through Sebastian's weekend bag.
“Where is it??” He panicked as Sebastian wheezed.
“What are you looking for??” Sam asked.
“Bastian’s asthma inhaler I can’t find it!” Killian said.
“Keep looking!” Sam said and picked up Sebastian and carried him outside away from the smokey living room while the house aired out.

Killian found the inhaler and grabbed it running outside. Sam had Sebastian sitting up right on the front yard
“Hey, its okay. Breathe in through your nose out through your mouth.” She coached softly as Sebastian followed instructions.
“Good.” She said and looked  at Killian who sat down in front of Sebastian to give him his inhaler.
“How did you know to do that?” Killian asked looking at Sam
“I had Asthma when I was a kid. I outgrew it..” Sam shrugged and walked inside to make sure the house was aired out.
“You feeling better buddy?” Killian asked. Sebastian nodded.
“Sam helped.” He smiled. “And you said a bad word in the kitchen you have to put money in the swear jar.”
“Uncle Killian has to put a lot of money in the swear jar after that,  believe me. Come on, lets go order Pizza since I burned the mac and cheese. Let's ask Sam what kind of Pizza she wants.”
“Saaaam!” Sebastian yelled as he ran into the house.

After ordering the pizza, Killian had Sebastian watching the TV so he could talk to Sam while he cleaned up the mess in the kitchen.
“You didn’t have to play with him if you didn’t want to.” He said. “He’s 6 he would have forgotten about it in a few minutes.” Killian chuckled.
Sam just shrugged.
“And honestly.. When he had the asthma attack that could have gone so much worse without your quick thinking. So Thank you.”
“No problem.” Sam shrugged. “I’ve watched you cook before you watch the stove like a hawk, how the bloody hell did you burn kraft mac and cheese?”
Sebastian gasped from the living room and picked up the glass jar on the coffee table and brought it to Sam.
“You have to put a quarter in.” He said.
“What for?” Sam asked.
“You said a bad word.” Sebastian said and jingled the jar.
“I don’t have a quarter.” Sam shrugged.
“Then you have to stand in the corner and count to 20.”
Killian just chuckled and dug in his pocket for a quarter.
“I will pay Sam’s debt.” He said and plopped the quarter in the jar. “Go watch your movie.”
Bastian ran off with the Jar counting the money in it.
“Thanks for paying my bail.” Sam looked away with a small smile. “So.. burnt mac and cheese?”
“I was just watching him play, I got distracted.” Killian shrugged and scratched behind his ear nervously.

After dinner, Sam was in the living room watching the television while Bastian was getting his bath and then pajamas on.
“Don’t like the tele do you?” Killian asked as he and Bastian came back up the hallway.
Sam just narrowed her eyes at Killian as Bastian grabbed a book from the book shelf and plopped himself down in Sam’s lap.
“Oh...Okay..” Sam said.
“Read this to me? Please?” Sebastian asked.
“Okay..” Sam shrugged and started reading the book, Her sweater sleeves pushed up a bit as she tried to hold Bastian still and read the book at the same time. Bastian cocked his head curiously and pushed Sam’s sleeve up revealing scars that went up the entirety of her inner forearm.
“What happened?” He asked with concern in his tone. Sam looked at Killian, who held a look of concern in his eyes.
“Sebastian, that's impolite.” Killian said.
“No.. its okay..” Sam said. “I was walking around in the park after school, and you wouldn’t believe it!” Sam exclaimed. “This huge bear just jumped out of nowhere.”
Bastian gasped.
“A Bear?!”
“A bear.” Sam nodded. “I had to fight to get away and you know bears have sharp claws right? Well he scratched me.”
“Whoa..” Bastian said and then yawned.
“Alright, I think its time for bed. We can learn more about the elusive bears of Storybrooke in the morning.” Killian said Sebastian sighed.
“Okay..” He said and hugged Sam quickly. “Good night Sam. I’m glad you won the fight against the bear.” He said.
“Yea. Me too kid. Night..” She said.
Killian walked Sebastian down the hallway and looked over his shoulder briefly as Sam pulled her sleeves back down and tucked her knees under her chin wiping a tear away with her sleeve.
