Fright Night (Possible Obsession rewrite test)

A/N: So this isn't really a one-shot. I've been thinking about Rebooting Obsession to make it better this is just kind of a sample of how the new story would look and I kind of just wanted to do a test drive to see if people would even be interested in a reboot of Obsession. I know a lot of people liked the book, and its sequel, but I wasn't happy with how far the story strayed from the original idea I had in my head. This version follows it much more closely. The actual book will still be titled Obsession, I just wanted a halloweenish name for the Sample because its spooky season XD
I tried my best to make this an actual one-shot where you could clearly see all aspects of the story, the horror, the romance, all of it but I just couldn't seem to cram enough into a small space so as I said before, this is more so a sample of what a possible rewrite could look like.
Anyways just let me know what you guys think! <3

It wasn't that Lylah didn't like Halloween. She loved it actually, which is why she had asked for this one night out of the whole year off so she could just sit at home with a bowl of candy in her PJs and watch horror movies by herself. So when she got the email this morning from her boss, letting her know she would be required to come into the office tonight, she was upset. However, as she continued to read the email and realized that, she wasn't required to come in tonight for actual work, but instead a mandatory office Halloween party she was annoyed.

"Oh, come on Ly at least we don't have to work!" Ruby, Lylah's coworker, and also best friend and roommate said.
"I only ask for ONE day out of the whole year, and he still won't give it to me!" Lylah groaned and looked up at Ruby who was fixing her costume which was a skimpy red dress, and a red cloak attached to it, but she also wore a set of wolf ears on her head and her make up looked wolfy too. "What are you even supposed to be?"
"Red Riding Hood and the big bad wolf." Ruby grinned. "Where is your costume? You love Halloween!"
"Exactly why I asked for the night off. I'm not wearing a costume."
"But the email-" Ruby started.
"I know what the email says." Lylah shrugged.
"You know this is why Jones picks on you so much right?" Ruby asked. "You're always breaking the rules at work, and you won't even put on a costume for the Halloween party."
"I think he'll live." Lylah snorted. "I wonder if he'd be mad if I called in sick." Lylah smirked.

"If I have to go, you have to go." Victor, Ruby's boyfriend mumbled as he walked into the room with hideous green face paint and scars.
"First, you don't even work there. Second, what the hell are you?" Lylah asked.
"I'm Frankenstien.." Victor said as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
"No, you're Frankenstiens monster." Lylah sighed. "Frankenstien was the scientist."
"The guy was kind of a monster himself don't you think?" Victor asked.
"Sure." Lylah nodded and shrugged and then sighed. "How is it that an Emergency room doctor gets Halloween night off, but I don't."
"Technically I'm on call, but Ruby is making me go to this thing with her until I get called in. So as I said before, If I have to go, you have to go."
Lylah scowled.
"Fine, but I'm going to complain the entire time.."
"Wouldn't expect any less from you." Ruby grinned.

As soon as Lylah walked into the crowded lobby at the office she groaned. She wasn't fond of the Jones bros office parties. She usually just liked to go to work, and go home, she was not a social butterfly at all, which was something her boss Killian Jones had picked up on immediately, and boy did he enjoy making her uncomfortable. At least this was better than last years Christmas party, if only a little.
"You guys look great!" Tink, Killian's secretary beamed at Ruby and Victor. She was dressed in a lime green sparkly dress with blue fairy wings. Tink frowned as she looked at Lylah.
"Wheres your costume?" She asked. "You look like you're just dressed for work."
Lylah had just worn a black skirt, and a scarlet colored blouse with a pair of heels.
"I decided not to wear one." Lylah shrugged. "Has the punch already been spiked?" She asked.
"Yes but Ly-"
"Then you know where to find me for the rest of the night." Lylah grinned and made her way over to the table with the snacks and the punch bowl.

"How did I know, that you would be the only one not dressed up."
Lylah turned around, with a freshly poured glass of punch in her hand and raised her eyebrow at her boss. Who..also was not in costume. He wore his typical back slacks, a very nice and crisp button up shirt, black in color, with a black waist coat, and a dark red colored tie. She looked up to his face and her heart felt like it jumped into her throat. His usual blue eyes were a striking silver color.
Lylah..get a grip its Halloween, the man is wearing contacts.. She thought.
"Last I checked a pair of contacts were not a costume either Mr. Jones."
He grinned, revealing a set of gleaming, very convincing fangs. The man owned a very successful company so of course he could afford all the fancy special effects makeup and what not.
"Neato." Lylah smirked. "Emo Count Chocula."

Killian narrowed his silver eyes at her.
"I guess, you kind of are in costume after all, you're dressed like you actually work." He scoffed.
Lylah laughed.
"That would actually be insulting, had you not just promoted me to the head of the graphic design department. Nice try though."
"Someone sure is bitter they didn't get the night off." Killian mumbled.
"Why wouldn't I be? When is the last time I asked for a night off?" Lylah asked.
"Fair enough." Killian shrugged. "It was mostly Liam's idea. He calls it a team building experience." Killian said and did air quotes. "It is kind of nice, to step away from the business side of things every now and then and actually connect and talk to each other as actual people."
"You do realize that half of the people here don't care to know each other? They're only here to pay the bills, and go home." Lylah sighed.
"Is that why you come to work Miss Morgan?" Killian asked.

"Don't get me wrong, I love my job, I enjoy what I do, but I don't really care that Isaac, from publishing just got married. I don't care about David and Mary-Margarets baby shower. Or anyone else's business outside of work. I get it, there are those strange creatures that do care but making this mandatory so people like me are forced to pretend to care is a bit of a power play." Lylah paused and looked around the lobby. "And what do you know, I don't see that brother of yours here. If this was his idea, where is he?" Lylah asked.
"He's out of town on business." Killian shrugged. "Which is none of your business, to be frank." Killian said sternly and glared down at her, reminding Lylah that she was after all speaking to her boss about her other boss, and she should probably watch her tone.

"Right. Well, if I am forced to be here, I may as well go do something useful." Lylah rolled her eyes. "Enjoy your team building thing, Mr. Jones." She went to turn away but his hand clasped around her wrist. His touch, was alarmingly cold, and his eyes were intense, and alluring. Almost.
"Stay and enjoy the party, Miss Morgan." He said. His tone was more of a demand then a suggestion and he looked completely shocked when she pulled her wrist away from him.
"No thanks." She said and turned away from him and walked to the elevator.

🕱🕱🕱

Lylah sat in her small office space looking through emails from her team. She had a certain vision in mind when it came to what she wanted and she wanted it absolutely perfect before placing it on Mr. Jones desk, however it was becoming clear that not a lot of her team understood exactly what she wanted.

"If you want it done right..you might as well do it yourself.." Lylah sighed and rubbed her temples and sipped at the spiked punch she had brought with her. She dug in her desk for her trusty old graphics tablet and hooked it up to her computer and went back over the emails of the submitted projects from her team. There were certain thing about each one that she liked so if she could find a way to bring them all together into one, perfect design it would work out perfectly for everyone involved but she would have her work cut out for her.

The sounds of the party from downstairs were proving to be incredibly distracting. Lylah could hardly focus. Her phone in the office started ringing, which she found odd. She put on her earpiece and pushed the button.
"Lylah Morgan." She said
And then rolled her eyes as a gravely voice came through the earpiece.
"Do you like scary movies?"
"Hilarious, Graham." She said sarcastically.

"What are you doing at work on Halloween?" Graham asked.
"Well there was a mandatory party/team building experience, so naturally I am upstairs avoiding all of that."
"Sounds like you." Graham chuckled. "If I were you, I'd use this time to scope out your weird bosses office."
Lylah sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose.
"Again with this?" Lylah asked. "What is your problem with my boss?"
"Well for one, he's insanely obsessed with you. I see the way he looks at me when I visit you for lunch."
"We broke up ages ago Graham. Why do you care if he's supposedly obsessed with me?" Lylah asked.

Graham ignored that question and went onto his next point.
"He's just strange Lylah. There is absolutely nothing online about this guy. Do you even know the man you are working for?"
"He's a private guy Graham, since when is that a crime?"
"Do you ever see that guy outside of the office?" Graham asked.
"No, but then again I'm not looking for him either. What is your point?"
"I just think you need to be careful Lylah. Something is very strange about him. Check out his office. I bet you you'll find something to prove I'm right."
"I'm not going to go into my bosses office Graham!" Lylah groaned.
"Why not?" Graham asked.
"Because thats invading his privacy and I'm not looking to get fired. I just got promoted. Speaking of, I have a lot of work to do so I'm going to go."
"Lylah wait." Graham said.
"What, Graham?" Lylah sighed.
"Be careful." he replied.
"Sure." Lylah said and hung up.

Lylah tried to get back to work, but now instead of being half focused on the party down stairs, her mind had become fully occupied with all things Killian Jones. He had taken quite a shine to her from the moment she was hired. One night, while she was working late, he had even admitted to liking the way that she didn't just fall head over heels all over him like almost every other woman that worked there and that he liked the challenge of pursuing her. Of course she had laughed it off. Lylah wasn't really the least bit interested in a relationship, especially not one with her boss, however incredibly attractive that he was.

There were other things about Killian, that were kind of odd. She too had noticed the way his eyes would turn borderline possessive anytime a male coworker would stop and chat, or when Graham would visit occasionally on her lunch break. Even though her and Graham had broken up, they remained pretty good friends.

Another thing she had noticed over time was, Killian Jones was very persuasive. There was hardly a soul that could tell that man no, except for Lylah and it seemed to drive him crazy that she could. Anything that he wanted was his, except for her.

She also couldn't help but think about how much she actually got away with. Most people would not dare to talk to their boss the way Lylah spoke to him, but their banter was possibly one of her favorite things about the day. Killian was fun to talk to, when he wasn't being a raging asshat. And there were days when just out of the blue, he would be just that. To everyone, including her. It wasn't typical boss assholery it was on a whole new Level, he was almost an entirely different person.

But outside of all of that Graham was definitely right about one thing. No one really knew anything about Killian, or his brother and now that it was on her brain, she wouldn't be able to rest until she looked around his office. She threw back the rest of her drink and stood from her desk and slowly, and quietly made her way out of her office, and down the hallway towards the Elevator. Killian's office was on the top floor of the building. She'd been in there before, but only long enough to put her project envelopes on his desk and leave. He did not like people in his office, especially when he was not there.

So Lylah really had to ask herself as the elevator opened on the third floor, and she stepped out looking down the hallway at the large mahogany double doors with the large J engraved in gold:
Why the hell was she doing this again?

She walked down the hall slowly, giving herself time to decide not to do stupid things, but it was as if she could not stop herself from walking if she wanted to. She felt as if she was being drawn to the office by a magnetic force. She needed to do this.

She put her hands on the large glass door knobs and twisted. The doors popped open and she pushed her way into the office. For a man who was so secretive about his life, he sure did not know how to lock a door. Lylah stepped further into the large office and looked around, She'd always found Killian's taste in Victorian gothic decor to be very admirable. She thought it was quite beautiful. She walked over to a bookshelf where he had a very impressive collection of old books, and antique trinkets that she couldn't imagine how he managed to get. Then again the man had what seemed like unlimited amounts of money.

Lylah looked around at the paintings on the walls there were a lot of the ocean, and ships. She never knew he had a thing for the sea. All of his stuff was very beautiful, but nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing worth keeping so private. She walked over to his large black oak desk, and sat in his chair. She stretched out and leaned back in the comfy chair.
"I am asking for one of these." She breathed and spun around a few times. She looked out the window behind his desk, the view of Seattle was absolutely stunning from up here. No wonder he liked his office so high up.

She sighed, this was wrong and if he were to walk in, she would be fired on the spot. She turned back to the desk to stand up, but noticed one of the drawers on his desk was slightly open. She cocked her head to the side curiously and opened the drawer the rest of the way. She picked up a picture, it had to be centuries old. It was two men, dressed in royal navy attire standing in front of a ship. But upon further inspection the two men in the picture were Killian and his older brother Liam. She shook her head. That was impossible. It had to have been one of those old time photos that you can get at as a souvenir at the state fair.. Or something. But it looked..so real. She shook her head and tossed the picture back in the desk and shut the drawer and then something on the desk caught her eye. There was a decanter filled with red liquid. She'd never seen any liquor look quite like that. She picked it up, and opened it and brought it to her nose. It smelled strangely, kind of metallic. and as she tilted the decanter slightly to inspect the consistency, it was thick. Another odd thing about it that she suddenly realized was the decanter...was warm. Or maybe the liquid inside was. She couldn't describe what suddenly compelled her to raise the decanter to her lips but she did.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you." Mr. Jones, cool stern tone stopped her dead in her tracks. She dropped the decanter and it shattered on the desk.
"I am so fucking fired!" She exclaimed and looked around for anything to clean it up with. Frantically she just started trying to gather the spilling liquid in her hands before it hit the floor.

The liquid felt odd in her hands and she raised her hands to look. her hands were covered in a dark red, sticky mess and she suddenly realized exactly what was all over her hands. She stood from the desk looking at her hands. Her face became so pale she was almost transparent. She looked at Killian, and then down at her hands again. And then back at Killian, and back at her hands and the very second she opened her mouth to scream. Killian had somehow, after being in front of her, across the room just seconds ago, grabbed her from behind and clasped his hand over her mouth muffling her screams of pure terror.
