Chapter One
Chapter One:
The day had finally arrived, Amélie sighed with happiness. It was happening, well over seventeen years late but hey, better late than never; she liked to think. She smiled as she stood in the doorway of her mother's bedroom and watched the woman messing with her hair nervously and flattened her dress repeatedly. She was acting like a blushing seventeen year old bride; Amélie shook her head with a small grin on her lips.
Her parents, since reuniting, have become disgustingly affectionate. Whereas she acted as if she hated it, secretly, she loved it. She loved that her parents were crazy in love with each other; it did take them over seventeen years to realize it. Idiots, she smiled affectionately.
"What's that smile for?" Ginny asked, looking through the mirror at her daughter.
"Nothing, Mom, just happy," Amélie answered, the smile still on her face.
“Me too,” Ginny replied, her bright brown eyes shining with happiness.
Six months had passed since the deaths of Cho Chang and Lucius Malfoy, her crazed grandfather. They were free of those two and life had been great from there. Not much had changed, truly, except that now her father, Draco Malfoy, lived with them. It had taken a while to get used to but now, Amélie couldn’t think about him never being there; the time he hadn’t, those long seventeen years, not just for her but her mother as well, seemed like another life. She finally had her father, their family was perfect now; a grandmother too, she supposed. Narcissa was something else but that was for another time.
Amélie sighed as she watched Ginny turn from the mirror to pick up her veil. As Ginny heard the sigh, she stopped and looked at her daughter, her eyebrows furrowing at Amélie’s expression.
“What’s wrong, love?” Her mother asked as she changed directions and came to her daughter at the door, grabbing her hands in her own.
Amélie frowned. She’d had a long week, she realized as her mother pulled her away from the door and towards the bed. She brushed a curl out of her face as she leaned against the bed, carefully so she couldn’t wrinkle her dress; her maid of honor and best wo"man” dress. The thought brought a small smile to her lips. She was wearing a dark red strapless gown that slid down to the floor and she couldn’t help but wonder what Thomas would say when he saw her.
“Amélie?” Ginny asked her, pulling her from her thoughts. “What’s the matter?”
Amélie frowned again, “I just… well, I’m tired.”
“Ah, yes, you’ve had a troubling week, darling.” Ginny conjured a chair and sat in her sparkling white wedding gown slowly. “Do you want to talk about it?” She asked.
Amélie crossed her arms and shook her head softly, “no, mom, you have to finish getting ready. Dad’s waiting for you.”
“Yes, I have to finish getting ready but Draco waited seventeen years, he can wait a few more minutes. He’ll understand when he knows it’s for you.” Ginny gave her a small smile as she pulled on the skirt of her strapless gown. “Talk to me, Amélie. What’s wrong?”
“Nothing’s wrong, really. I just… I’m just tired.” Amélie answered.
“You’re a terrible liar, baby. I wonder who you got that from.” She thought aloud then looked at Amélie’s expression, “Tell me how the assignment went? I didn’t hear you get in last night.” Ginny asked as she reached and grabbed Amélie’s hand.
Amélie rolled her eyes. She knew why her mother hadn’t heard her come in but she wouldn’t say why. Disgustingly affectionate was all she would say. Lucky for her, they’d at least put up a silencing charm around the bedroom.
But her mother was talking about her first official assignment for the Organization. After she killed Cho Chang, for a while, she had hoped she’d immediately be given an assignment but five months had passed before Jeff called her into his office, alone, and they discussed her control of her gift and if she was ready for her first assignment. She was shocked that Jeff had asked her but he quickly explained. He was certain she was ready but he needed to make sure that everything was alright with her. Amélie immediately understood.
After Chang’s death, Amélie had done a lot of thinking. Thinking about killing someone and actually do it were two very different concepts. For a while, she had wondered if the career path she had chosen was the right one. She wasn’t sorry that she killed Cho Chang. The crazy witch had wanted to kill her mother. She just couldn’t allow that to happen and then she didn’t. She killed the woman and was even happy for that. Well, that was what she had come to. She had been protecting her family but she knew that not all of her assignments would be like that. She wouldn’t be protecting her family but the Wizarding world and possibly the Muggle world, as well. So, with that conclusion, she had spoken to Jeff and they finally discussed her first real assignment.
Much to her surprise, her first assignment was a muggle but he wasn’t a stranger. The man was Mr. Donald Moreno. The muggle who had the video on the USB of her mother, knew about the Wizarding world and the secret Organization they worked for. Amélie was shock to find out that he hadn’t been obliviated, his memories erased. Jeff had explained that he had gone underground and she had to weed him out then do the deed.
“Amélie…?” Ginny asked.
“Sorry, just thinking. We don’t have to talk about it.” Amélie sighed.
“If you don’t want to, we don’t have to.” Ginny smiled reassuringly. “I just want you to know that your father and I are here for you, if you ever want to talk.”
Amélie smiled back. “Yes, I know. Thank you, mom,” she said as she got to her feet and Ginny pulled her into a hug.
“I love you so much.” Ginny told her.
“I love you too, mom.” She hugged her back.
“Good,” Ginny released her and got to her feet, brushing wrinkles out of her dress. “Well, I think I’m ready. Go into the living room and tell the women I’m ready.”
Amélie nodded as she left the room, her mind filled with memories of last night.
It had taken Amélie a month to find the man and finally, she was standing in front of a seedy, motel room in Miami, Florida. She’d never been to Florida and though she wished she could enjoy the sunny beaches, she had work to do. She looked down the hall, no one insight. She lifted her wand and whispered, “alohomora!” to which the door kicked open.
“Donald Moreno?” She called out softly, her wand at the ready. “It’s in your best interest to come out and make this easier.” She told him as she entered and kicked shut the door behind her.
She heard frantic breathing coming from the closet. She exhaled, shaking her head as she grabbed the door and pulled it open. She frowned when she caught sight of the muggle leaning against the back with a muggle firearm in his hands. He was pointing it at her but his hands were shaking.
Amélie shook her head, “that is pointless. Put it down and set the safety on then come sit on the bed silently.” She ordered, her wand pointed at his face. He didn’t move. “Do you know what this is?” She asked him, indicating to her wand.
He nodded.
“Good, now follow my directions to the T, Donald Moreno.” She instructed.
It took him a second but he followed her directions; as he slid on the bed, his gaze narrowing nervously on her wand. After a moment, he looked away from her wand to stare at her with wide, frightened eyes. He then turned to look around the room. After that, he returned his eyes to her. Amélie wanted to groan and roll her eyes but forced herself to remain professional.
“Who are you?” He asked his voice low.
“You know who I am.” She told him.
“I never thought that – I mean – none of this was supposed to – I didn’t want anything to do with this!” He exclaimed.
Amélie eyes narrowed in disbelief. “You were approached by Cho Chang and you met multiple times in England. You can hardly say that you didn’t think any of this was going to happen. Plus, you are a muggle. You have no business sticking your nose in affairs that don’t pertain to you, Donald. You should have ignored Cho Chang and stayed away from anything she had to offer. Now, she is dead. Her partner, Lucius Malfoy, as well, and you will be joining them both soon.”
Donald Moreno shivered in fear. “I – I – I’m sorry!”
“This is not something you can just apologize for.” Amélie shook her head slightly. “You got involved with Chang, you were an accessory in the breakout of Malfoy from Azkaban, the Wizard prison, and with that, the two tried to kill my family. Also, I must add, you tried to expose our Organization, which helps both worlds stay safe from evil, dark people, to the world. That’s a major no-no, Donald Moreno.” She explained.
His face paled dangerously.
“Do you have anything to say?” She asked.
“I – I heard that when you were in England and showed up at the hotel, you were attacked. Did you – did you know that it was that Cho Chang! She tried to kill you! I didn’t have anything to do with that!” He told her.
Amélie figured as much. And that information just made her even happier that she had taken out that rapid woman.
“I –” he started again but she cut him off.
“Why, why did you do all of this?” She was curious and she was certain his answered would appease the others.
“Why? Well, why not?” His fear dropped slightly. “Another world that literally exists within ours? I know the truth. I was shown the truth! And a special, secret Organization within this world? Unbelievable, isn’t it? Can… you… believe it?” He asked nervously as he caught sight of her expression.
“I see,” and really, she did. Curiosity killed the cat. Didn’t he know that muggle saying? He really should have known better. Shaking her head, she took a step towards him. “That’s all, Donald Moreno.”
“Are you – are you going to let me go now?” He asked.
Amélie turned away from him and gave it a thought, or so she let him think. She heard him fidget nervously behind her. Finally, she decided enough was enough. It was late, she was tired and she needed to get home. She turned back to him.
“No,” she said then lifted her wand and called out, “Avada Kedavra!”
The muggle fell back on the bed, dead, lifeless. She stared at his body, sighed then apparated out of the seedy, muggle hotel room.
