Chapter One ~ Pickpocketing

Seventeen years later...

The bright spring New York City day began to fade away and the wind blew bitterly against the few stranglers that scattered around in the night; the air smelled of burnt coal and cold, dry whiskey. An occasional taxi cab would quickly flee down the road rushing off to pick up a costumer or their warm homes.

The streets were empty except for one lone man who was walking rapidly down the street, constantly glancing over his shoulders. His jerked movements were suspicious to onlookers within the bars and shops along the street yet no one intervened.

As the man rushed down the street, his right hand would slide into his right suit jacket pocket as if reassuring himself that something was still there.

He looked around again certain that someone was watching him, even following him. The hairs on the back of his neck were standing up.

Clearing his throat then licking his lips nervously, the man quickly turned the corner into a deserted alley and bumped into a young woman, instantly knocking her to the ground. She cried out as she fell back, reaching out to him for support; as she hit the floor, her flaming red hair fell into her face.

"Damn," she cursed as she rubbed her butt.

The man immediately held out his hand to help her up which she accepted gladly. The young woman smiled sweetly as she righted herself, thanked him and then began to walk away.

He stood there, longer than he should have, watching the young woman's hips sway seductively until she disappeared into the shadows at the end of the alley.

He jumped when he realized how much time he had been wasting watching her; he fixed his suit jacket then ran down the alleyway and all the way to his studio apartment.

As he ran off, silvery - gray eyes watched him from the shadows, smiling; the young woman looked down into her hand where she held a small USB that held proof to much more information than the man had even thought was possible.

Ginny Weasley searched furiously throughout her room for her favorite pair of jeans. She couldn’t find them and it irritated her to no end. Growling slightly, she pulled her fiery red mane of hair out of her face and into a ponytail. “Where the bloody hell are those blasted pants?” She asked the empty room.

She sat back on her bed and crossed her arms, looking around her now messy room. She was slightly embarrassed by the mess but she needed to find those jeans.

Trying to relax, she rolled her neck and closed her eyes, inhaling and exhaling deeply.

“Let’s try again,” she muttered and grabbed her wand, "Accio blue pants!"

The door to her apartment opened, then loudly. Ginny looked back at the door and knew who it was without seeing.

“Mom, I’m home. Where are you?” Amélie yelled from the living room then Ginny heard her whisper, “Sweet Merlin, this place is a mess.”

“Coming!” Ginny called from her bedroom and when she came around the corner, she saw her seventeen year old daughter holding up a pair of blue jeans and staring down at them with an expression she knew too well.

“Hey, baby, you’re back! Oh, perfect, I was looking for those blasted pants.” Ginny ran over and grabbed the jeans, pulling them on quickly. She looked at her daughter and smiled. Amélie was looking at Ginny with that smirk on her face that belonged to a certain annoying ferret that she hadn’t seen in seventeen years.

“Mom, seriously, you’re a mess.” Amélie teased, as she pulled her red hair, identical to Ginny’s, into a messy bun and sat on the couch. Artemis and Flamer, Amélie’s bright orange cat, jumped up and curled next to her.

“I was looking for something,” Ginny muttered as she frowned at Amélie. “How’d it go?”

“Got it,” Amélie winked at her mom and held her hand out with the USB. Ginny grabbed the USB and blinked it into her muggle laptop. She touched the laptop and blinked it onto Amélie’s lap. “Let’s see it.”

“Mom!” Amélie complained as she began tapping away at the keyboard.

Ginny smiled as she sat down on the couch and looked at the screen; it began to play.

First it was only static and then suddenly Ginny appeared, out of nowhere, followed by Amélie and Thomas Kristoff, who had side-apparated. Thomas Kristoff was an eighteen year old American wizard who was a friend of the family.

“Bloody hell,” Ginny whispered as she clicked it off.

“Shit, mom, this is bad.” Amélie said.

“I know, I know,” Ginny responded, “Did he make any copies?” She asked as she rubbed the heel of her hands against her eyes.

“Thomas said he didn’t have time but I went by the man’s office after he left. I turned the place upside down, looking for something but nothing was there so I followed him and then got the USB when we bumped into each other. I didn’t even need to use magic. Good old pickpocketing worked just fine; Uncle George would be so proud.” Amélie explained proudly and her silvery – gray eyes sparkled mischievously.

“I sure he would be, darling.” Ginny smiled as she sat back on the couch. “I’m sure he would be.”
