"Hey, it's Black Falcon!" Chilling on the edge of the street, this kid spotted them and called out to Sam. "What's up?" The kid nudged his friend sitting on the sidewalk next to him.
Sam chuckles. "It's just Falcon, kid."
"No, no. My daddy told it's Black Falcon." The kid says in a matter of factly tone.
Sam stops by the kid as Morrigan and Bucky keep walking. "Is it because I'm Black and I'm the Falcon?"
The kid looks up puzzled. 'Well, technically, I mean yes."
"So, are you, like, Black Kid?" He serves the rebuttal. The kid puffs out his cheeks as Sam laughs. "I got him, right?" The kid mumbles.
Sam hurries after them and hangs back with Morrigan. Bucky turned up some marroune stone stairs that led up to a double storey house. She waited on the steps as Bucky and Sam stood at the door with a blue no trespassing sign on it.
As Buck dealt with the front door, Morrigan scanned the street. She watched for any questionable signs. They did not need to bring a fight to this place where there were people out and kids playing.
"Today's your lucky day." She perks up to hear the sound of doors opening. "He said he wanna see for himself." Bucky enters in first followed by Sam and Morrigan. She looks down on the kid who open the door who looked like he'd seen god; he technically did.
The boy closes the door behind her and takes a seat near the dinner table. The room was dimly lit with cheap furniture and family pictures on the wall. Where were they?
"Isaiah?" Bucky says which draws her eyes to the man in front of them. A tall Black man with greying hairs eyes the trio, sussing them out.
"Look at you." Isaiah says with his eyes stuck on Bucky.
"This is uh, Sam. Sam, this is Isaiah. He was a hero. One of the ones that HYDRA feared the most. Like Steve." She connected the dots.
"We met in fifty-one."
"If by met, you mean I whupped your ass, then, yeah. We heard whispers he was on the peninsula, but everyone they sent after him, never came back. So the U.S military dropped me behind the line to go deal with him. I took half that metal arm in that fight in Goyang, but I see he's managed to grow it back." Isaiah's eyes linger on Bucky's arm. "I just wanted to see if he got the arm back. Or if he'd come to kill me."
"I'm not a killer anymore." She could feel the strain in his voice.
"You think you can wake up one day and decide who you wanna be? It doesn't work like that. Well, maybe it does for folks like you." She held her breath.
"Isaiah, the reason we're here is because there's more of you and me out there."
The old man pursed his lips tightly. "You and me."
"And we need to know how."
"Well, you better talk to Soldier Zero over there because she's the reason you and me, are here in the first place." Both Sam and Bucky looked back at her. Morrigan was about to speak as Isaiah grabbed something. "I'm not gonna talk about it anymore." He then throws the tin box straight into the wall.
Isaiah walks towards Bucky and Sam. "You know what they did to me for being a hero? They put my ass in jail for thirty years. People running tests, taking my blood, coming into my cell when they should've done that to you! Even your people weren't done with me." Hydra.
Morrigan's heart broke yet again. "Isaiah..."
"Get out of my house!" The man yelled furiously. The boy instantly got up and ushered them to the door. Sam opened the door and left first. The boy waited by the door for Morrigan to leave as well.
Before she turned her back on him, she looked Isaiah straight in the eyes. "I know." He knew her words were in response to his words about her.
By the time she was out of the house, Bucky and Sam were already in a heated discussion by the sidewalk. They then veered into the road. "I asked you a question, Bucky." Sam said loudly. "Steve didn't know about him?" She got closer.
"He didn't. I didn't tell him." She knew Bucky was avoiding Sam's eyes but she wasn't.
"So, you're telling me that there was a Black Super Soldier decades ago and nobody knew about it? And you are Soldier Zero? What's that supposed to mean?" He was hurt.
She was about to answer when a vehicle turned into the street and emitted a siren of some sort. She recognised it as a police car.
"Hey." The driver calls out, keeping the sirens on.
Sam's posture changes instantly. "What's up, man?" as a second cop exits the vehicle.
"Is there a problem here?"
"No, we're just talking." Sam motions between them. She analysed how the cops were staunched and ready to act. This was unfortunate.
"We're fine." Morrigan mindlessly takes a step away from Sam which the cop notices.
"Ma'am, is he bothering you?" The second cop asks. Morrigan looks to Sam with a bewildered look while he stares at the ground.
She keeps a calm expression. "No."
The driver walks behind Sam and Morrigan. "Can I see your ID?" He positions himself in line with Sam.
"I don't have ID. Why?" Sam turns around to face him.
"Man, seriously?"
"That's not necessary." Morrigan says as the second cop joins his partner. She notices how the driver raises his hand to his weapons belt. The hair on her skin pricked. She could take them out in a second, her friends just had to give her the word.
"Okay, sir, just calm down."
"I am calm. What do you want? We're just standing here talking."
"Give him your ID so we can leave." Bucky suggests, clearly wanting nothing to escalate.
In her hand, Morrigan materialises a fake ID with governmental credentials. "Hey, you want IDs, ask for one from each party involved here." She takes out her new one and holds it in her hand. "That's the way you're supposed to do this, right?"
"No. We're not giving him shit." Sam says to the both of them.
The driver takes a step forward. "Is he bothering you ?"
"You already asked me; my answer is the same. No." Morrigan retorts.
"Do you know who this is?" Bucky interjects. Sam sighs, really disliking the fact Bucky has used that card.
The three of them could hear the partner tell his buddy that they were Avengers. The instantaneous change in expression and perspective was astonishing. "Oh, god. I am so sorry Mr Wilson." He chuckles nervously. "I didn't recognise you without the goggles. I'm really, really sorry about this." The cop then gives Morrigan a double take. "Uh, ma'am, I don't think you are an Avenger, so I need to see your ID." She gives it.
Another police car enters the street.
Morrigan looks around to see that they now have an audience. "I didn't tell anybody because he had already been through enough." Sam shakes his head at Bucky. He knew that the world knowing that a Black man was a Super Soldier like Steve would've made such an impact.
Morrigan shuffles in her spot. "And clearly, some secrets were never unveiled."
"Mr Barnes... there's a warrant out for your arrest." The driver comes back.
Bucky closed his eyes, remembering what he didn't do. "Look, the president pardoned him for all that."
"Not for that. You missed your court-mandated therapy. It's like missing a check-in with your PO. I'm sorry Mr Barnes, you're under arrest." The second cop takes out the handcuffs. "And Miss Ernmas..."
"Agent." She says quickly to correct him. It was automatic. In past whenever someone addressed her using her Midgardian alias incorrectly, she'd speak up.
"Uh, Agent Ernmas, your ID says you were born in 1919. I don't know what superhero stuff you guys got going on but this is a criminal offence by law; you're under the arrest of attempting to pass on a fake federal ID."
She didn't change the date. "Sam, you better call your buddies that run this country before I land in a prison cell."
