Chapter Eighteen ~ Change Your Life Forever
Christmas night, the group spent sprawled all over Blaise’s elegant room. Neville was asleep, lying on the bed while Ginny and Luna slept on Draco’s bed, which had been brought over to Blaise’s room by the house elves. Draco and Blaise were sitting on the couch watching the other three sleeping; each sipping on Firewhiskey.
The party had been enjoyable. They had talked, eaten, danced and drank, of course. And now, while the others slept, Draco and Blaise talked, for real. Draco had immediately muttered a quick Muffliado, filling the other three’s ears with unidentifiable buzzing, allowing Blaise and himself to talk in peace without being overheard.
Draco’s eyes didn’t move from the sleeping redhead.
“Stop that, mate,” Blaise told him.
“Stop what?” Draco asked, finally looking away from Ginny.
“I know you fancy her. You can’t afford that with your other profession, Draco.” Blaise explained as he took a sip of his Firewhiskey.
“I don’t fancy her. She’s just... the thing is – well, she’s just good eye candy.” Draco tried to clarify his relationship. “It’s only for now. I’m sure once I shag her, I’ll get her out of my system.”
“Even you don’t believe that,” Blaise snorted.
Draco grimaced as he ran his fingers through his hair. Blaise was right, so bloody right. It wouldn’t work, even he knew that. He looked back at Ginny, her flaming red hair against the pitch black sheets. Her pale skin flushed due to her tossing and turning from whatever she was dreaming about.
Draco was yearning to lie beside her, in Luna’s spot, his arms wrapped around her slim body. He was imaging the way their bodies would fit together when a jet of water splashed against his face.
“Aguamenti! Aguamenti! Aguamenti!” Blaise repeated over and over again, splashing Draco continually. Draco jumped up, blocking his face from the jets of water.
“Quit it, Blaise.” Draco hissed as he wiped his face. He was drenched now. Sitting down, he glared at Blaise who was smirking as he crossed his legs and glimpsed over at the sleeping Neville.
Draco followed Blaise’s line of sight to find Neville lying on his side watching Blaise and Draco. He had a small grin on his face as he watched the pair sitting there. He pointed toward his ears and shook his head. Blaise smiled and winked at him, nodding his head towards Draco whose gaze had turned back to the sleeping redhead.
“I’m going to sleep,” Draco growled. He stood up and looked one more time at Ginny with longing.
“Don’t even think about it. The spot is already taken,” Blaise told him as he kicked Draco towards the couch and made his way towards the bed. Neville blushed as Blaise slid under the covers next to him. Draco, angrily, threw himself on the couch and looked over at Blaise and Neville. Blaise smirked as he cuddled closer to Neville who blushed from the tips of his ears to his shoulders. Draco frowned as he laid back on the couch, looked quickly at his Red and thought that maybe this wasn’t entirely bad.
~.~.~
The next morning, they had all woken up and gone their separate ways promising to see each other more often though they all knew it wouldn’t happen. They all had their own lives to live; busy with their own things.
Neville went back to being an Auror but he was also looking into the new Herbology position at Hogwarts that had recently opened up. Everyone knew that Neville’s passion was Herbology. Ginny was happy for him. He also seemed deadpanned on staying away from Blaise and their relationship was forced to end because of it. Neville tried to hide how devastated he was but truthfully Ginny didn’t feel any sympathy for him. He had brought his devastation on himself.
Luna went back to working at WWW with George and Ginny could see the relationship blossoming there. She couldn’t help but be happy for the both of them because Ginny knew that she couldn’t ask for anyone better for her brother and for her best friend. Every time she saw them together, because George brought Luna to every family event, she teased them endlessly but honestly, she was ecstatic.
Blaise, since his kind of break up with Neville, went back to roaming the streets of England for parties, singles, and places to have a good time; enjoying the greatness of bachelorhood, he said. The truth was that he was miserable without Neville. He wanted him back but how could you force someone to be with you? Blaise wouldn’t do it so he just let it go.
Draco went back to working part – time at WWW and being an Auror. He also had his other job on the side and things were going smoothly, he just missed a certain redhead who was always occupied.
And Ginny, she went back to training and studying twenty – four, seven. She was determined to be the best and she would be. She missed her family, yes, her friends, of course, and Draco, why…she didn’t know. There was just something about that blasted ferret that made her miss him. It was horrible and mind consuming. She didn’t need it. Besides that though, everything was great.
Well not everything, Ginny had a secret that she was sure no one in her life had. After the incidents on Christmas, appearing at Blaise’s accidentally and then when she fell and Draco had said she’d “disappeared” for a second, she had thought that it was nothing but then little things began happening. Once, she was tired and just wanted to be in bed. She was lying on her couch listening to the Weird Sisters when she closed her eyes. When she opened them, she was lying on her bed in her room and the Weird Sisters were still on in the living room. Another time, she was taking off her shoes and her wand was too far away for her to put them away magically. She didn’t want to get up; she was being lazy. She sighed and wished they’d just go into the closet on her own. She closed her eyes and rubbed her temples, she was having another blasted headache, and when she opened her eyes, the shoes were gone and she could see them lying in the closet from where she was. It was so weird, these little incidents, it was like she could transport herself places when she closed her eyes. After a few tries and failed attempts, she began to get this new power under her control. She didn’t need her wand. It was one of the wickedest things that had ever happened to her. But she never told anyone, beside Neville and Luna. They were amazed too and promised not to tell a soul. It was their little secret.
As time went on, Ginny went on with her usual routine of work, family and studying. And it all paid off for her in the end because by the time her other group members were halfway through their first year; she had finished hers and was entering her second. But after about two weeks they realized that she knew everything a second year could do, so they tested her and when she passed, they moved her up to her third year. She started her third year with Dawlish, she was still in her group with the other members but she was way above them. They no longer bugged her; they had learned the hard way what happened to people when they got in her way.
She had gotten better every day and not only Dawlish noticed, the other leaders and employees noticed too. They acknowledged the fact that she was hard working and dedicated to what she wanted and needed to learn. She saw them watching her when she was locked up in the Auror private library or whispering to each other when she would demonstrate something that has never been done by someone of her ranking. They were astonished by her determination to surpass her fellow trainees and that she excelled further than almost anyone had ever gone through Auror training.
Two months into her third year, and Dawlish realized that even the spells and training were entirely too easy for her. Proudly, he had informed her that there was absolutely nothing else they could teach her here and it was time for her to graduate. Dawlish then told her that only one other student had gone through Auror Training that quickly; she obviously knew he wasn’t talking about Ron or Harry because when the new Minister of Magic had been elected, he had personally asked them to join the other Aurors and help restore the Ministry to its former glory. And they had done just that.
No, no he was talking about Draco Malfoy; official bad guy turned good after the war. He was forced to join the training instead unlike the others and he had graduated in only a year. It seemed like Ginny would be doing the same thing.
But Ginny was reluctant to leave. She wanted to stay and learn more; to learn more about everything and to practice over and over again. The thing was she wanted to do damage with not only her wand and hands, but with her mind as well.
Then the day before Ginny was to graduate, Dawlish pulled her aside. Now she couldn’t help but be excited when he looked at her and told her that Gawain Robards and Kingsley Shacklebolt, the Minister of Magic, wanted to speak with her.
~.~.~
The first thing Ginny noticed when she entered Kingsley’s office was that there were two simple folders, one red and one silver, lying on the desk. Robards was leaning against the wall on the furthest side of the room and he nodded when she entered. Kingsley’s office was very normal, not how someone would imagine the Minister of Magic’s office. She liked it though, he wasn’t flashy and that was good for the Wizarding Community. Silence filled the office as she stood in front of Kingsley’s big desk. Ginny bit her lip nervously, standing, waiting for orders.
She looked up nervously to see Kingsley smiling at her. Finally he spoke:
“Ginevra Weasley, please be seated.” She slowly sat in the chair directly in front of his desk, “we have important things to discuss.”
All she could do was nod in response.
“It seems that you have exceeded our Auror training and we are having you graduate tomorrow. We, Robards and I, feel you should move up to something more challenging and worthwhile for you rather than an Auror.”
“Is that right, sir?” Ginny asked, her voice sounding stronger than she felt. What the hell is he going on about? She wondered.
“Robards,” Kingsley looked over at the Head Auror. Robards simply nodded and exited the room, shutting the door behind him.
“Ginny – do you mind if I call you Ginny? – I had Robards leave the room because what we are about to discuss is confidential.” Kingsley explained.
Ginny nodded.
“It has come to my attention that you have a special gift; a special gift that doesn’t come by often. Don’t ask me how I know, that’s confidential as well, but I can tell you that that gift is amazing and would be highly useful in this other opportunity I was speaking about earlier. With your gift, which is called blinking or transporting, you will exceed in this opportunity. So, Ginny, you must make a choice because I can’t tell you more until then. Which will it be? Graduate and then you’ll become a first class accomplished Auror, of that I am sure, or take the other opportunity?” He asked her curiously, awaiting the decision that was bound to come.
“Ginny, in this folder,” Kingsley said pointing to the red one, “will have instructions for you to attend a small seminar that ever trainee must attend after they graduate and before they begin their career as an Auror. While the other, the silver one, will…most definitely change your life forever.”
Change my life forever? How dramatic is that? What the hell? Well, he is right. This Auror training was a breeze for me. So, how about I up and change my life forever? What difference will it make? What do I have to lose? She wondered and then responded to her own question: absolutely nothing.
And with that thought, Ginny grabbed the silver folder. All because of that bloody silver folder her life was going to change. For the better or worse, was the only thing left to decide.
