Chapt. 30
Late evening, Ciel, Sebastian, and I got packed to go to Ciel's townhouse. Another case opened up that involves a traveling circus that is in town. They just arrived last night. I am to come along with Ciel and Sebastian in this case rather than to stay at the manor instead. But, I wanted to come along.
"Travel safely, Young Master. Milady." Mey-Rin tells us goodbye.
"See you soon." I smile at her.
"Look after the manor while we are away, everyone." Sebastian said.
"You now what to do if something happens. Don't forget why I hired you all." Ciel says while tipping his hat before getting inside the carriage.
During the carriage ride, Ciel reads the letter that he got from the Queen this afternoon. I wasn't told about the details. All I know is that children have gone missing while the traveling circus was in different towns. It kind of reminds me of that old folktale.
"Jane, have you ever been to a circus?" Ciel asks me out of the blue.
"I can't say that I have." I shake my head. "But, I heard stories of what a circus is all about. Jamie tells me about the tricks that some of the performers do. Like fire-breathing, tight rope, and swinging around. And I think there is also a beast tamer."
"Has Jamie been to a circus before?"
"When he was kid. That's what he told me."
"Good." Ciel suddenly smirks at me. Why did he smirk just now? While we were in town, Ciel went through the records of the missing children reports.
"Are you sure we're suppose to be here?" I ask while going through a few books. "What if we were to get caught?"
"We won't." Ciel bluntly answers.
"If you say so... What are you looking for anyway?"
"Anything that could help us with the case. Have you found anything, Sebastian?"
"I've recorded the incomplete reports, but there is nothing else here." Sebastian answers and hands Ciel a file.
"We'll leave once you finish copying them." Ciel says and someone from Scotland Yard arrives.
"Hey! You can't do that!" He had ginger hair and blue eyes, and he also had a mustache. "If someone were to find out that you were here, then I would get into a lot of trouble! And who is she!?" He points at me.
"She's nobody you should be concerned about, Underline."
"It's Abberline!" Abberline corrects Ciel and looks at me. "You're with him, aren't you? Can't you stop him from doing this!?"
"Um... I don't know." I shrug my shoulders.
"We're quite done here. We're leaving, Sebastian. Let's go, Jane." Ciel walks out of the room after gently taking my hand.
"Hey! Wait a second!" Abberline shouts after us.
"Who was that?" I ask Ciel.
"Just somebody who wants to keep London at peace. Don't worry about him."
"Okay. So, where are e going next?"
"We're going to see him again. You only met him once. But, I'm sure he remembers you."
"Him?" I blink with confusion. We stop walking and I look at the sign above the door. "Undertaker?" Oh, that's right. Now I remember.
"Let's go." Ciel walks into the shop and shouts for Undertaker. We hear a faint giggle and I feel a hand on my left shoulder from behind me. Startled, I turn around and see Undertaker smirking down at me.
"Oh, how lovely to see you again, Jane Montfort~ You're in better health since the last time I saw you." Undertaker smirks again.
"Thank you. It's nice to see you again, Undertaker."
"So, what brings you and the Young Earl into my shop today?~" Undertaker leans closer to me, having me take a step back.
"I need you to look through these files and tell me if you've seen any of these children come into your shop." Ciel tells him and hands him the file.
"Now, Milord, you know the payment for information~" Undertaker giggles as a bit of drool runs down his chin. "Just one laugh and all of the information is yours!"
"Honestly..." Ciel sulks.
"But, I am willing to make an exception~" Undertaker looks my way. I blink with confusion again and Undertaker slowly walks over to me.
"What do you want with Jane?" Ciel glares.
"Nothing much~" Suddenly, my waist is grabbed and I am pulled into Undertaker's chest, then feel lips upon my cheek.
"WHA-?!?!?!" I squeal and my face turns 50 shades of red. I push Undertaker away from me and cover both of my cheeks with my hands. "What was that for!?" I exclaim and Undertaker bursts out laughing.
"I always wanted to do that the moment I laid eyes on you! Your reaction was so adorable and hysterical!" Undertaker holds his stomach and I back up into Sebastian's chest, confused out of my mind and trying to process what just happened.
"Are you alright, Mistress?" Sebastian whispers to me and I nod my head. I wasn't expecting that.
"One kiss on the cheek and a reaction did it for you? You really are a strange man." Ciel glares at Undertaker before clearing his throat. "You got what you want. Now tell me what you know."
After getting the information from Undertaker, our next stop is the circus! As we took our seats, the show had begun. It was everything that I expected it would be.
A Beast Tamer, Beast.
Fire Breather, Jumbo.
Snake Dancer, Snake.
A Knife Thrower, Dagger.
Tight Rope Walker, Doll.
The trapeze, Peter and Wendy.
And main act, Joker. But, I got bored and decided to leave. "I'll be right back." I whisper to Ciel and leave the tent. I decided to take a walk around the campsite that the circus had set up.
There were so many tents around. It makes me wonder how many performers are in the circus. They even have elephants!
"Hmm?" I look over to the tent and because of my curiosity, I walk over the wire and make my way over to the tent. But, before I could go any further or close to the tent, I quickly turn around and grab a snake that was about to bite me.
"HISSSS~" It sharply hisses at me as I stare at it emotionlessly.
"And where did you come from?" I ask it and begin to squeeze the snake tightly. It hisses some more as it begins to struggle. "Who is your owner?..." My tone of voice begins to darken, then,
"What do you think you're doing!? Says Wordsworth..." I look up to see one of the performers standing in front of me. I think Snake was his name. "Please release our friend there, if you don't mind. You aren't suppose to be back here, lass. Says Emily..."
"Sorry. I got lost and this snake was about to bite me." I release the snake in my hands and I watch it slither to Snake.
"If you're lost, the entrance is that way! Says Wordsworth..."
"Thank you." I smile at Snake and leave the campsite, and went to the carriage, waiting for Ciel and Sebastian to return.
