H A R R Y 🔫
As I trailed behind Scarlett and Liam, I found my thoughts drifting away to the elevator drama I had with Scarlett. It was weird how she just happens to randomly occupy my thoughts every single time, and frankly that was starting to annoy me a bit. I wasn't interested in her. Nope not one bit. She was annoying as fuck with all her questions, crying and feistiness, which I liked to a certain extent.
"Harry you've got to see this!" Liam's voice broke into my thoughts as he held up a syringe with a strange grey liquid in it. We were now in the biochemistry labs, which were two labs where genetic engineering took place. A couple of years ago, the actual boss of The Organization thought that it'd be a brilliant idea to start genetically modifying our assassins. You know, like to make them stronger and faster and etc., thus making our organization better than the other ones. It was our special secret. He got the idea when he met Russell, seeing that Russell had inhuman abilities that helped him a lot. Obviously we had to be ethical about this whole procedure, so we only did this if people wanted to do it, which was surprising, as loads of people want to do it.
"What is it?" I asked curiously, squinting at the strange liquid. My eyes flitted to the right, glancing at Scarlett who was also gazing at it with an intrigued expression.
"I call it X-02," he said leading us over to one side of the room where he had all his apparatus set up. "You know the substance bonded to Wolverine's skeleton and claws?" he asked the both of us.
"Adamantium?" Scarlett arched an eyebrow at Liam skeptically. "That doesn't exist though," she said, folding her arms over her chest, while leaning back against the table.
"Well now it does!" Liam exclaimed proudly, setting down the syringe carefully on his work desk before walking over to his large computer with multiple TV screens around it.
"Wait but isn't Wolverine's skeleton made out of high-grade steel or titanium?" I questioned with confusion. Even though Scarlett thinks I'm just some idiot who only has muscles, I'm not. I can say that I am pretty quick-witted and educated. I've been in The Organization ever since I was a kid, sometimes when it gets boring I'd read, and what I'd read are things kids my age would've been learning. I still do read, it's become a hobby of mine, along with boxing and swimming. Scarlett shook her head at me, explaining to me with exactly Adamantium was while Liam started up his computer.
"Adamantium is a fictional metal alloy that appears in Marvel comics. I don't know about what Liam has made but as far as I know, it's not real," she told me, furrowing her brows as she gazed at the syringe.
"What's so special about it anyways?" I inquired, while her teeth tugged at her bottom lip and her brows furrowed in thought.
"From what I've heard, it's practically indestructible. Its called Adamantium for that reason, 'adamant' is an adjective. Probably used to describe the property of its impregnability and diamond-like hardness." Damn she really is a nerd. I heard Liam mutter 'I didn't know that' as he listened in on our conversation.
"Adamant is a noun too right?" Liam spoke up, not really looking at us.
"Yeah," Scarlett nodded. "Used to designate its impenetrability or just any unyieldingly hard substance..."
"And formerly, a legendary stone/rock or mineral of impenetrable hardness and with many other properties," Liam continued, smiling at Scarlett goofily while she let out a low chuckle.
"Aw you guys already finish off each other's sentences," I cooed, laughing at little as Scarlett scowled at me. "Get married already!" I threw Liam a fake smile as he blushed deeply in an angry manner. "How do you even know so much about it if it doesn't exist?" I asked her before Liam spoke up.
"It does now thanks to me!" Liam shouted excitedly.
"Shut the fuck up Lithium," I hushed him, while he grumbled 'stop calling me that' as Scarlett let out a small giggle.
"I was a huge Marvel fan when I was a kid, still am but not as much as before. I'd always stay up for hours researching about characters' superpowers and all that," she smiled as she reminisced to those specific memories of hers when she was a kid.
"Oh my god same here! Who's your favorite superhero?" Liam asked, excitement lacing his tone. Liam had just found his soulmate.
"I'd have to say Captain America," Scarlett smiled, as I raised my eyebrows slightly. Captain America was a good choice. But I prefer vigilantes like Ghost Rider, The Punisher or Cat Woman from DC. Cat Woman's pretty hot, then again so is every other Marvel woman.
"He's amazing honestly, but my favorite has got to be Wolverine," Liam said, glancing back at Scarlett before typing a few keys. One of the TVs suddenly switched itself on, showing a live stream of a monkey prancing around in its cage.
"You already did animal testing?" Scarlett questioned while Liam nodded, standing up from his seat, tucking in arms into the pockets on his lab coat. "And it worked?" she arched an eyebrow, awe lacing through her features.
"Yep. This here is Bella, a 12 year-old crab-eating macaques," Liam said, pointing at the screen where the little brown monkey was tugging at the bars of the cage. "A week ago we injected her with a dose of X-02-."
"How do you know if it works?" I interrupted, frowning at the screen.
"Well first of all the monkey isn't dead," Scarlett muttered, loud enough for both of us to hear. "I mean, she could've died from metal poisoning but, she didn't. What did you do different to the metal?" she asked Liam with furrowed brows; before he began explain the whole process of how he mixed different types of metals together. And that's when I zoned out.
I thought back to what happened in the apartment with Scarlett and I. I would be lying if I said I didn't want it to happen again. The way her tongue made contact with mine, the way her soft skin felt under the palms of my calloused hands, the way her soft moans would fall from her perfect lips when I touched her in the right places, that all just made me feel something weird; weird in a good way. I wasn't used to getting such a reaction from anyone, mainly because I wasn't that sexually active, but other than that I kind of liked that I always got such a reaction from her. Both sexually and emotionally
But as much as I liked it, I just couldn't. I don't know why but something kept pulling me back. The fact that Russell's her father was part of the reason but not entirely, another reason would be is that when I'm sexual I'm vulnerable and I hate being vulnerable. You never know if a girl's giving you head, she might just chop your dick off and kill you instantly. I'm always on my guard, except when I'm doing something intimate. That's why I'm not as sexually active.
But obviously I am a man and I do have my needs. I'm not the type to go around sleeping with random girls, I was like that when I was a teenager but now I just stick to one or two girls. Someone I usually hook up with would be Natalie, she's a good fuck and she's good at giving head; a perfect no strings attached relationship. The thing is I get paranoid while having sex so I tend to use BDSM a lot, which Natalie doesn't mind at all.
A couple of years ago, there was supposedly a spy from another organization lurking around in The Organization. Whoever this spy was, he/she was running around killing people and stealing top-secret information. At that time I was in a physical relationship with this girl called Piper. This one I was drunk and we were making out, I was on top of her but then literally in one second she was on top of me with a knife at my throat. If it wasn't for my roommate at that time, I would've been dead. So, I'm sorry for being paranoid but I'd like to be intimate without getting killed.
I thought about this as quietly observed Scarlett as she talked to Liam while I zoned out. I had to admit, she was undeniably attractive. She had a kind of understated beauty; perhaps it was because she was so disarmingly unaware of her prettiness. Her olive skin and bone structure was flawless, her skin was like silk over glass and she radiated an intelligent beauty. Her lengthy chocolate brown hair framed her exquisite face, matching her eyes.
For some reason her eyes were my favorite feature. They weren't just brown; they were chocolate specked with gold. I hated that some people call brown eyes boring and how people would say they lack the fun and audacity of colorful eyes. It's stupid. Brown eyes have a sense of openness as well as a hint of enigma. Scarlett's eyes were a beautiful shade of chocolate brown, the color of coconut shells, and burnt umber, winter-roasted chestnuts with rims of darkest chocolate. She had gorgeous mesmerizing eyes.
"She's really cool. I don't understand why you hate her so much," Liam's voice broke into my thoughts. I shook myself out of the daze I was in and scowled slightly. I don't know why I was held spellbound by her beauty; this girl seriously makes me feel weird things I've never felt before.
"I don't hate her, I just don't particularly like her," I grumbled, folding my arms over my chest. "Where'd she go?" I asked, my eyes flitting to every corner of the room looking for her.
"She wanted to see the monkeys. I sent her to the animal testing labs with Marie," Liam told me as I nodded.
"You know you guys do have a lot in common, maybe you both should-"
"Harry you know I've got Sofia," Liam pulled a face as he shoved me.
"Sofia's boring Liam. Then again, so is Scarlett. But at least you and Scarlett like Chemistry and all that. Sofia likes fashion and shit," I said as I poked him.
"She's a model Harry," Liam said.
"Models are useless," I scoffed. "Yeah they're hot as fuck but they only get money for being pretty and skinny. I find that pathetic," I opined, glancing at his frowning face.
"You're an asshole, you know that Harry?"
"Yes yes I don't need to be reminded," I waved him off with a hand as I walked around his part of the lab. The laboratories here are humongous, and each scientist is assigned to one part of the lab.
"Let's go find Scarlett," Liam suggested, walking towards the exit and I followed him. "She might get lost or something," he said as we made our way towards where the animal testing occurred. I hated animal testing, totally against it. Animals have a right to live in a world without suffering just as much as we do. I mean; we have the capacity to research and develop alternatives that are more accurate and more humane. Plus frankly, I like animals better than people.
As soon as we stepped in, about two or three other scientists approached Liam with questions and advice they needed from him. Liam was one of the best in the science department. Almost all of his experiments and weapons and genetic serums and etc.; were successful. So far he had managed to figure out how to increase human strength, vision, sense of hearing and a whole lot more.
I left him to converse with his nerdy friends, making my way towards where the animals are kept in cages and other forms of captivity. My hands pushed through the double doors, revealing a horrid stench that made my nostrils flare.
"Excuse me you're not allowed be here." I just ignored the random voice and kept walking "Hey I'm talking to you! You blind or something? Didn't you read the sign?" the loud obnoxious voice made me halt. I spun around and my eyes landed on a girl the age of 16. I quietly observed her with a hard frown on my face, as she stared back without an ounce of fear.
"What did you just say?" I cocked an eyebrow at her, as she gulped in what looked like fear. "Do you even know who I am?" I asked in a low voice, glaring at her in slight annoyance.
"Look buddy, frankly I don't care. You don't have a lab coat or a pass. You don't belong here," she rolled her eyes at me, keeping herself sounding confident and full of authority. I parted my lips to say something before somebody spoke up in a loud voice from behind the girl. I lifted my gaze to meet a pair of ocean blue eyes.
"Harry! I see you've met our youngest recruit. Laura, this is Harry Styles, an assassin from the Fraternity," Mark smiled at me, placing a hand on the girls shoulder. Laura's hazel eyes grew wide with realization as her jaw dropped.
"Well your youngest recruit here doesn't seem to have any manners, nor does she seem to know who her seniors are," I growled in irritation. People with high authority are part of what's called the Fraternity, in our case the Fraternity also includes woman. People from the Fraternity are called seniors, I frankly hate it because it sounds like we're old people, but I'm not the one who chooses the names. "And she should watch her fucking attitude." I spat.
"Cut her some slack Harry it's her first day," Mark sighed making me glare at him angrily. I would've gotten mad at him for talking back to me but I didn't, because he's part of the Fraternity too. Mark was the head scientist of the science department of The Organization. "Laura, Harry's an assassin of Valkyrie," he told her as her hazel eyes went even wider.
"Oh I didn't know that I-I'm sorry Si-"
"Don't call me Sir," I interrupted her, scowling in annoyance. "Watch your mouth next time kid, and learn who your fucking seniors are," I glared at her, as she bobbed her head silently, keeping her gaze averted from mine.
"You can go Laura," Mark mumbled to her quietly and she nodded at him instantly. She muttered a small 'sorry' to me before rushing away quickly.
"Why do you hire such young stupid people for the science department?" I inquired as I walked alongside with him.
"Why do you train such young people to be assassins?" I let out short laugh while he smiled at me. Mark was someone I didn't mind at all, he was one of the little people who didn't get on my nerves, and that was usually him, Jade, Liam and Damien. Other than that every other person was just annoying in some way; depending on that person.
"You know why," I said, gazing at the poor farm animals in cages. I guess we could say the only good thing about The Organization using animal testing is that the treat the animals really well, unlike some research facilities where they are abused and deprived of their basic needs.
"She's not stupid Harry. She's a Biology/Chemistry graduate from Harvard. She's practically a prodigy. Very gifted," he told me as I nodded. "Who's that over there?" he asked, pointing at Scarlett who was carrying something in a yellow blanket, feeding whatever it with milk in a bottle.
"Scarlett Jones, Russell's daughter," I informed him as he raised his eyebrows at me.
"Oh I've heard. What's she like?" he questioned, as I gave him a confused glance. "Just curious to see if she's anything like Russell."
"I don't know much but she's smart and stubborn like him," I told him as I gazed at her. She was staring down at whatever it was she was feeding, with a small smile playing on her lips. She looked really pretty when she smiled. Focus Harry. Stop being such a sap for God's sake; my subconscious scolded me. "She's a Chemistry major from Stanford," I added, making him raise his eyebrows once again, seeming impressed.
"Hmm that's interesting. Russell hated the science department," he laughed as I pressed my lips together nodding.
"Despite them being father and daughter, they're still different people," I pointed out.
"True," he hummed, nodding before clapping me on the back. "I'll see you later Harry. Gotta check out a shipment of uranium that's coming in right about now," he said, checking his watch before shooting me a smile and dashing off to wherever he's got to be.
I made my way over to Scarlett who pacing around slowly, rocking the 'thing' in the blanket in her arms. Her eyes flitted up to mine, locking our gazes for a second as she let her lips curve into a small grin. My eyes darted to the 'thing' she was holding, noticing that it was a baby spider monkey.
"Isn't she just the cutest little thing?" she breathed, her lips stretching across her teeth when it yawned. I've never seen her smile so big. She looked somewhat happy I guess. "Her name's Estella," she told me, scratching its tiny head.
"From Great Expectations?" I asked, staring at the little monkey curiously, causing her to look up at me with an amused smile.
"No," she laughed lightly, before a small frown took her beautiful smile.
"What's wrong?" I spoke quietly, my gaze leaving Estella the monkey and focusing on Scarlett now, whose frown had deepened now.
"It's just so sad that these monkeys go through so much, only to get killed in some cruel experiment, y'know unless the experiments are beneficial to them in someway. But the things they go through here are just so horrible, deprivation, loneliness, boredom, insanity, pain and misery. They don't deserve this," she murmured, staring up at a squirrel monkey sitting in its cage, which stared back in curiosity with its dark eyes.
"You're right," I murmured, stepping forward and sticking my finger through the cage for it to grasp it with its tiny hands. "Animal testing is horrible," I spoke with slight anger in my tone. I kind of liked having conversations like this with Scarlett, sometimes when I speak to the women here all they talk about is pointless shit like the latest gossip 'round here and who fucked who.
"We should know by now that asserting our dominance over another species does not make us look strong, but rather makes us look weak, as if we're moving backward, not forward," Scarlett muttered, standing next to me as she gazed at Estella the monkey with great sadness. "I feel bad for baby monkeys in particular, or any baby animal used in animal testing," she said after a few seconds of silence.
"Why?" I simply asked.
"Baby primates are literally ripped away from their mothers, and they're given only rag dolls or noxious wire "mothers" as substitutes. It's so wrong and sometimes the reasons are seriously idiotic. Like this one time I heard that experimenters looked at the connection between maternal deprivation and whether the baby monkeys became right-handed or left-handed. I seriously don't see the point in that experiment," she ranted, a small frown appearing on her face as she spoke.
"The same thing happens to humans sometimes. Babies are taken away from their mothers forcefully," I murmured as I felt her heavy gaze settle on me. I wanted to tell her. I wanted to tell her how I was torn away from my own mother when I was just a few months old, but I couldn't. I couldn't tell her everything. I couldn't let my guard down and reveal myself to her. I still didn't trust her and frankly I don't want to. I've only met her two days ago and I already felt like she's changing me. She's making me feel feelings and emotions I've never encountered before and I hated it.
A silence fell over us as I played with Dax the squirrel monkey and Scarlett watching over Estella the spider monkey. My ears perked up when I heard her singing softly to the monkey, lulling it to sleep. My ears listened intently to her voice as it sang quietly to the drowsy baby monkey, its eyes fluttering before falling asleep all together. I tried to figure out the song she was singing, and I managed to do so right before she stopped. She was pretty good, not gonna lie about that.
"Imagine? By John Lennon?" I spoke up, gazing at her with an amused smile on my face.
"Yeah, Dad would always attempt to sing that to me in his horrible Boston accent, at bedtime when I was little," she said with a sad smile. I could see the pain written clearly in her eyes. She was still not over her father's death, I mean who could blame her? She's been completely stressed out and over-whelmed by everything that's been happening for the last few days, plus with her nightmares. I'm surprised she hasn't become depressed or something.
Soon Maria came back and took the monkey from Scarlett's arms and we made our way out of the animal testing labs. All the science labs were a floor beneath the floor with the mess hall and gymnasium and etc. The Organization was apparently a long-established institution, been running since 1939, around the time World War 2 started.
It was rumored that around 1944, German army officers came to us for assassins to help assassinate Adolf Hitler, hence why we call our main assassination team Valkyrie. Along the years the whole place developed and we now have two branches of The Organization, one here in Nevada and one in London, England. I was transferred to the branch here in Nevada with Damien, Max and a couple of other people, simply because they believed we had potential to be on Valkyrie. Damien, Max and I made it on the team, while the others became trainers and teachers.
"How do you guys have so much money for all of this?" Scarlett's voice brought me out of my thoughts. I stared down at her before turning my head and frowning.
"Our main boss, the one whose ancestors founded the Organization, is a fucking billionaire. He pays for all of this of this stuff. I think he's a part-time drug lord or something," I frowned as Scarlett listened to my words.
"What's his name?"
"Ford."
"Have you met him before?" she asked me; while I reminisced to the last time I met Ford.
"Yeah a couple of times," I answered shortly.
"What's he like?"
"Intimidating as fuck. I once saw him kill a man on the spot because the guy insulted his daughter. His daughter goes here to The Organization," I told her as her eyes widened.
"Seriously?" she let out a small gasp as we walked towards the mess hall. We spent so much time down at the labs it was already dinnertime.
"Yeah. Valkyrie, our assassination team, has regular meetings with him. He's the one who assigns the important jobs to us."
"Am I gonna part of Valkyrie?" she asked me in a timid voice.
"Of course. You're going to take your fathers spot. You better do well; Ford's favorite person on the team was Russell. He expects a lot from you," I told her with a smirk while she shot me a glare. I noticed her uneasy expression and glossy eyes; I let out a harsh sigh before pulling her into an empty corridor. I upset her again, fuck.
"Look," I said, gripping her chin with my lanky fingers and pushing her head up to meet my gaze. I could easily read the fear in her eyes eve though she tried to hide it as hard as she could. I thought to myself for a second, pondering on whether I should tell her about how I feel about her or not. Deciding to tell her part of what I felt and thought about her, I parted my lips to speak before she said something.
"I'm scared Harry," she whimpered. "I feel so pressurized right now, I'm scared I'm not going to do well. I'm scared I'm not going to finish that stupid course. I'm scared people are going to laugh at me and insult me for not being like my father," she whispered, her eyes looked away as a lone tear rolled down her cheek. "I hate letting people down," she cried softly.
"Scarlett," I murmured, brushing the tear away. "Look at me," I said and she obliged. "Don't be scared. I have faith in you okay; I believe that you are different to what this organization has ever seen. I'm confident you will do just fine, and maybe even better. You are smart and you are strong Scarlett and that's all you need. I believe in you," I whispered to her firmly, my eyes darting from her eyes to the other side of the corridor where people where walking. But nobody seemed to notice us standing here.
My eyes searched for hers, watching her as she mulled over her response to what I have just said to her. Everything I just said is true. I had this gut feeling that she was going to be just as legendary and impressive as her Dad, and my gut feeling was always right. My gaze drifted to her lips, noticing the light pink color of them, making me want to kiss them just to reassure her that I believe in her. And that's what I did.
My lips met hers in a slow sensual kiss.
