It was a quiet morning, the only sounds filling Alyssa's ears being that of The Killers, an old track called 'The Way It Was' that she'd grown quite partial to over the past five years. A lot of things had changed after she graduated high school; she'd broken promises, she'd grown closer to some, and she lost someone she was sure she could never get back. Alyssa had followed her heart, and in the end, it failed her. Or maybe she judged too soon.

A long distance relationship is too difficult. We'll be better off without the pressure to keep this going.

Her high heels clanked as she entered an office building, the twenty-nine-year-old not paying much attention to her surroundings. She had one earbud in, and one out, dangling down her side as she walked. She quietly greeted her coworkers, as she arrived in her office right on time.

I guess you're right. Is this really the end of things? I mean, not things. Us.

She clicked her tongue, set her bag down and unplugged her earbuds quickly. Alyssa Bennett had been working as a advisor for around five years now at a school district; she had to go around campuses to mostly check in on staff, and to make sure everything was up to date. She also trained new staff, and did a load of busy work. She was passionate about her job, and she did it well.

I guess it is. For now. You're always going to be the one I want. One day, I'm going to see you again, I promise, and I'll sweep you off your feet.

She wasn't planning on going to any schools today, though was being pulled out instead to help a new employee around the office. From what she knew, they were experienced with working as a biologist, and director at a science lab. They were going to be helping write new and up to date textbook for the district. Alyssa wasn't particularly excited, but she didn't mind doing it either. It was a neutral balance.

You shouldn't make promises you can't keep.

As she began working on papers, around an hour in there was a knock on the outside of her door. "'Lyss, he's here," a brunet started, around six feet tall and with brown hair full of cowlicks. Alyssa looked up, immediately recognizing her faithful coworker and good friend Theodore Blake.

"Ah, great, where's he at?" She asked, standing up from her desk and grabbing a few papers. "Just down the hall; his name's Jesse by the way."

Her heart thudded. Jesse? Jesse? She cut her thinking off. There were a million Jesse's probably, no need to overthink it. More likely than not, it wasn't her Jesse.

She thanked Theo, then walked out of her office and turned a few halls to finally spot who she was looking for. His back was turned to her, him dressed in a button up shirt with blue and white stripes, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, a credential of some sort, and long gray slacks.

Alyssa merrily walked toward him, until the moment he turned his head.

It was her Jesse.

Time felt like it stopped, and she was taken back to a simpler time.

"Alyssa, don't be such a wimp," a familiar voice started, it being that of her best friend.

"I'm not being a wimp, you're a wimp!" She replied, laughing and grabbing his hand.

He pulled her close, the two laughing as their faces got closer together. She shot him a snide grin, before the two got strapped in on a Ferris wheel. It was March, 2010, the two of them at a small fair held by their high school in celebration of their graduation.

They hopped on, Alyssa sliding under his arm, though he snatched her hand to hold it again. All seemed right in the world back then.

It wasn't the same now.

Alyssa and Jesse's eyes met for the first time in a long five years. The last time she'd seen him, was on Skype and the two agreeing that they should go their separate ways.

Neither were better off. Jesse looked down at her, recognizing her immediately and she did the same.

"Alyssa," he started, after a moment of staring at her. "It's so good to see you." I guess it is.

"It's good to see you too," she started, cracking a smile up at him.

Alyssa, I swear this is the one promise I'll never break.

"Hey," he started, "I kept my promise."

Alyssa laughed, "you haven't swept me off my feet yet--"

She felt a pair of lips on her own again, and her feet left the ground.

It was good, it was everything she imagined and more. She was happy. Truly happy, her arms wrapping around him and her eyes closing again. This time, there was no distance, and things were going to change for the better.

Okay, so, I don't know if this is super clear, but the italicized text is the conversation Jesse and Alyssa had breaking up. This is a rough draft, so don't expect too much from it!! Jesse belongs to CarWritesFanfic , and Alyssa belongs to me.
