13 - A Mess

First I have to start off by saying that Jake's brother is played by Jensen Ackles because...well...he's hot.

Inside the house (more of a cottage I would say) warms my freezing body and Jake places a green fleece blanket around my shivering body. His brother tosses a few wooden logs into the stone fireplace and I watch as his hidden fingers flick a match. He tosses it in and I can see no change in his blank expression as he watches the fire soar to life.

Jake takes a seat beside me, tipping me up to slide into him. The couch matches the rest of the cottage, the frame wooden and nearly broken while also matching the darkness with the comforters. Jake chuckles as I squeal, trying to slide away. Me bumping into him warms me up, but not due to the blanket. It's more of the embarrassment you could say.

"So Jake, how was school today." Honestly, in shocked to hear his brother talk, much less ask that question. I haven't considered him mute, as he has said some rude things to me, but he had to have been close when we were driving. He crosses his legs and falls to the hardwood ground, leaning against the back of the couch as his feet sit up against the fire. A tint of the fire's reflection flashes in his eyes and I turn my attention away from them and onto Jake, who's teeth are digging into his bottom lip.

"...fine," is all he can muster out. It saddens me to hear that. He could've at least say...weird, or maybe fun because he met me. Does this just mean that he doesn't like me? That we aren't friends? The cold feeling rushes back into my body but I still push the blanket from my body, forcing a smile. Jake looks at me and his face falls as he quickly adds, "but I did get to meet Callie!"

Him adding that doesn't cheer me up in anyway. He saw my face and probably noticed why I wasn't looking happy. I practically forced him to say that. "Tell me about class, any weird things happen again." Again? Weird things? Like how Jake told me to leave and never return? What his brother is asking doesn't make any sense. Jake is going to tell him, I hope. They seem like the two siblings who tell each other everything, especially since I see no hint of any parents.

Pictures of two boys are set up on desks, wooden stands, strung on the wall. Always two boys with blonde hair, but never an older set of parents. It's odd how that is, I mean even after only being at my house for a little we had our pictures set up.

One certain picture catches my attention and I look at it with a small smile. A boy, no older than 6 telling by his shaggy hair, tiny structure and two lost front teeth, stands tall and proud with a large fish in his hands. Now, I've never been a fisher and I hate the idea of people eating animals, but by the scaly and pink color I can nearly tell it's salmon (but I can't quote myself on that). Jake must have caught on as he pushed himself off the couch, never answering the question, and grabs the picture from off the nail that's holds it up. By now his brother is just staring at him, making tiny sniffling noises until he looks back at the fire with an intense stare.

"This was my brother when he was a boy," Jake informs, turning the frame around. He picks at the back and pulls off the black sheet that protects the picture from falling out. I go to say something, but his brother shakes his head as if he knows what I'm going to do. Jake looks up at me and I can notice his face is flushed with one tear slowly sliding down his face. When it touches his mouth he sucks in and licks it away.

"What's wrong Jake?" I go to ask, but his brother beats me to it. Wouldn't he already know what's wrong? I mean, he's probably seen the picture thousands of times.

Jake collapses to the ground and his brother sits up and races for him, catching his just barely. He holds him in a tight hug while I just watch, struggling to keep down my tears that I feel for Jake. Whatever is on that picture is a memory that he doesn't want to remember. Jake finally goes to speak, but it comes in gasps filled with cries. "It's-its a no-note from...dad." He finishes the last word in a whisper and his brother pushes away, raising his hand so that he can bite his nails. Some of his nails are already chewed off all the way, a small trail of blood running from the underneath and down his finger.

Jake doesn't pay attention to that and looks up at me, his eyes filled with mixed emotions. It has to include fear, and maybe a tint of anger. Whatever you call it, he just looks...broken.

"I think you need to go," he says smoothly. I nod and push myself up, taking small steps as I make my way to the golden rack that holds my backpack. "Want me to give you a ride?" He adds. I only shake my head and stop as I pass him, pressing a soft kiss against his forehead. I don't know if it's the right thing to do, and I've never been the bests with caring about crying people, but the thought entered my mind in a flash and I couldn't stop it. Jake nods and looks back at the floor, his hand grabbing his brothers. Their fingers wrap together and I leave quietly, making sure to close the door with a gentle click.

Now there's only one question; how in the world am I getting home?
