So what if I talk to myself?
Song: Stand in the rain by Superchick
We drove for hours...and I mean hours...to the point where I was almost out of gas again.
"Stop at this store up ahead...we need to get some supplies." He said as he watched me pull into the parking lot. "Now get out...if you say anything and I mean anything I will kill you do you understand."
I nod my head.
"Do you understand...say it out loud..."
"Yes...I understand...say nothing, keep my mouth shut. I got it." I roll my eyes at him. Of course he doesn't see me because I am looking out the door window.I opened the door slowly, a part of me told myself this is the time to escape...to get away however I end up walking by his side like we were actually together.
The whole time he was placing things for us to eat in the basket. Things that did not need to be cooked...things you would take on a camping trip maybe. There were a few items that I was not sure about but he didn't care what I had to say, like spam and sardines...Ewe.
When we walk up to the casher, the lady rings up all the stuff and keeps giving me a look behind her big think lens glasses, but never says anything. "That will be sixty-four dollars and thirty-three cents....please."
I waited for the guy to pay for it but he glared at me. "Pay for it...it's not like I have any money."
"Are you serious....I don't have that kind of money to spend?"
"Yes you do...open your little purse and get out daddy's card...I know you got one all you young girls do."I roll my eyes contemplating if I want to get the card out or not.
He is still holding the nice little knife in his right hand and he shows me without the lady behind the counter being able to see. I roll my eyes again and dig for the damn card to hand it to the lady. The lady starts coughing one of those smoker coughs and I just know she is dying for us to leaves so that she can continue her cancer stick once we leave. "You alright sweetheart?"
"Yes ma'am...just been a long day driving that's all."
When she hands me my card back, I toss it in my purse and grab all the bags. I walk out to the car and place them in the back seat.
"Get in...she's not going to help you." He tells me...noticing that I keep looking back at the lady from the inside. I wanted to run...to scream for help, but I didn't. Instead I got in the driver seat and took off once again down the road. "Hand me your phone."
"Why?" I look down and it is in the console between us. I watch as he picks it up and looks at it and then he rolls down the window and throws it out. I watch it bounce along the pavement from my rearview mirror. "Why the hell did you do that for?"
But he just smiles back at me with that crooked little mouth of his.
We drove until the light came on saying that I needed gas. "We should have gotten gas back there you know."
"It's alright...we are getting off on this road anyway."
I take the next right and drive down an old country road and then onto a gravel road covered with towering trees. I think about some of those horror movies you know the ones where the group of friends decides to go camping and then the serial killer comes along...yep that is this road. At the very end was a worn down cabin. I pull up and keep the car running.
He looks over at me with that glare again. "Turn it off and get out."
I shake my head no.
"Sophie...I will not ask you again." This time he holds the knife up and the sun hits the blade just right and I know he is not afraid to use it.
"How...how... do...do... you know my name?" I stutter out...now this guy is starting to freak me out. I was already a little...but now...how in the hell does he know my name...who is this guy?
"I saw it on one of your papers in the back seat...so you go to college?"
I turn my body so that I can see in the back seat; sure enough a few of my papers are showing and my name are on a few of them. I close my eyes for a split second. "Yes...I have to be back on Monday." I open them back up and he is still glaring at me.
"Great...we have all weekend then....now get out."
I do what I am told to do. "You know my name...so what is yours?"
"Why do you want to know?" He smirks.
"Hello...if I am staying here for the weekend at least you can tell me your name." I carry all the bags into the run down cabin. Thankfully the door was already unlocked. I walk in and set the bags down in the small kitchen.
"It's Kade..."
"Well...Kade...what now?" I throw my hands on my hips.He just grunts and turns around to close the front door.
To my surprise the place is furnished with limited items. Like there is a small table that sits four in the one area, I assume the eating area even though it's an open space. In the living room area there is an old couch with a sheet draped over it along with a reclining chair that is also draped. In front of the couch is a coffee table. I look around taking in my surroundings. Yes the cabin is old...but the inside looks way better than the outside. You can tell people still come here; however no one actually lives here...like it's some vacation...getaway place. I don't know why anyone would want to stay here though. There are a few old pictures hanging on the wall...pictures of guys holding up fish with one hand...their pole in the other, gleaming of their catch for the day. Most of the pictures are of men...a few with smaller kids and teens also fishing or doing something near the lake...I assume there must me a lake nearby. I wonder if these people are the ones that come here to get away.
I start down the small hallway and he stops me. "Where are you going?"
"I have to use the bathroom...it was a very long ride out here...do you mind?"
"No funny business...you use it and then come right back."
"OK." I turn and continue on my way. The bathroom was on the left.
When I step in, I turn to close the door in a hurry to get my jeans off to do my business. While sitting there I look around. The small bathroom consist of a faint green tub...gross...it has like the ring around the inside and you can see where it has been rusting from the dripping faucet. There is a small stand alone sink beside me; it is also the same faint green and it also has the brownish color from the faucet where the water has been dripping. Above it is a mirror with a small crack near the bottom and the whole thing is pealing around the edges. Makes me wonder how long it's been hanging up there. I didn't bother looking in the toilet...I'm not sure I want to see the state it is in. I just had to pee so bad and couldn't hold it in any longer.
"What the hell are you doing Sophie...you have to get out of here?"
I flinch...I don't know why she is always around me but taking in my surroundings she catches me off guard. "I know Emily...I know..."
"Why did you let him bring you here? What if he never lets you go?" She sits down on the edge of the tub, staring back at me.
"What was I supposed to do he had a knife...he was going to kill me if I didn't. Look he is bound to pass out sooner or later and I will leave alright."
There was a rough knock at the door and no sooner than he was done he opened the creaking old door to stare at me. "Hurry up and who the hell are you talking to?"
"No one...geez...can't a girl have some privacy?"
"I heard you talking...where is the phone?" I he snatches my bag from me. Before I can say anything he is dumping out all the contents. "Where is it?"
"I told you already...besides you threw my phone out the window remember...why in the hell would I have two?" I stand up to put my jeans all the way back up. I bend down and start putting all my things back into my back. As I fixing to grab the bottle of pills he snatches them from me.
"What the hell are these for?"
"For my condition...I take one in the morning and one at night."
He rolls the bottle around in his hand... "Clozapine...for Schizophrenia...you got to be kidding me?"I snatch the bottle from his hand.
"No...I was diagnosed when I was around fifteen...I have to have them."
"Why...you crazy...start hearing shit and voices and all that other shit."
"Only when I don't take it." I glare at him and throw the bottle back in my bag.
"But you were just talking to someone...you were talking to yourself?" He looks at me puzzled.
"Ok....so I talk to myself...like all the time. If you are going to keep me here you might want to get use to it because there is nothing I can do about it."
"What happens when you stop taking it?"
"I don't want to talk about it."
"Well I need to know...you have a few day supply here...what happens when you run out?"
"I am not planning on running out...you said we are just here for the weekend."
A loud snort escapes his mouth and I know then that he has other plans for us. I can't run out of my meds...I can't. The dark voices will come back and I don't like dealing with the dark voices. The voices that try to control me.
The first night was not as bad as I had thought it would have been. To my surprise the cabin had electricity. Kade said it was because the cabin is a vacation place and the owners keep the electric on all the time. However he only wanted to use the stove and then once it got dark he refused to turn the lights on.
"What is the big deal anyway, we are in the middle of freaking nowhere who would even know we are here?"
He must have had enough of my ranting about the lights because the next thing I know he is flipping over the coffee table. "I said no dammit...and that's final. All it will take is someone hiking or camping out or something and see the lights on and then they will come after us. Is that what you want?"
I shake my head no.
"Look...just go to sleep alright."
"But I'm not tired."
"I don't give a shit if you are tired or not...I said go to sleep and don't make me ask you again."
He lays on the lumpy mattress in the one bedroom. I am lying beside him. It's not that I wanted to. I didn't want to be near him. And I wasn't sleepy either. So I just laid there for hours staring at the ceiling. When my eyes finally adjusted to the darkness I noticed there were small round stains all over it, some were bigger than others and before the night was over I had already counted them three times.
Emily helped me count them out. "I can't believe you are just gonna lay there beside him. You need to get out of here...hello now is the time he is asleep."
I shake my head at her; I think that I'm just afraid of what will happen when he wakes up and finds me gone. .
"Sophie...get your sweet ass up and go. What the hell are you doing?" She yells while looking down on me.
I shrug my shoulders and then ease my way out of the bed, trying my best not to let the floor crack beneath my feet. I follow her to the bathroom.
"Emily...he is not going to just let me go."
"Why the hell not...he is asleep he will never know."
"Ok...fine...you got my back right."
"Of course I always have your back."I open the door and tip-toe out into the hallway. I find my bag in the living room and start to head out the front door. When I open the door...dark brown eyes glare back at me. I look towards the bedroom and then back up at him. How...
"Where are you going?"
"I couldn't sleep. I needed fresh air." Which wasn't really a lie...I couldn't sleep.
"And you need your bag to get fresh air?" He snatches it from my arm. "Get back inside Sophie."
I turn to go back in. "How did you know I was up?"
"I know everything...nothing gets past me."
"I want to go home."
"This is your home." He reaches over and glides his hand along my cheek. "For now...we will stay here for as long as it takes."
"Takes...for what...I don't understand why you think you need me to stay."
"I need you Sophie...just as much as you need me. You will see in time how much we really need each other."
