Nursing home for now

Song: Can't stop the feeling by Justin Timberlake

Jessica's POV:

Six month...she has been in a coma for six long months. I have tried to go on with my life but I can't forget about my little girl. I stop by everyday to visit with her. The doctors asked me to think about what I wanted to do. They are just not sure how long she will be like this. I just can't let her go...not yet.

We moved her to a nursing home earlier in the week and they are thinking about taking out some of the tubes. We will just have to see how it goes. I swing by to see her on my way home.As I am walking in, I hear someone talking in her room. My heart starts to race and tears of joy comes to my eyes but when I step in it's just some boy sitting in the chair beside her reading.

"Excuse me...who are you?"

He stands up, closing the book in his hands. "Oh...sorry...you must be Mrs. Baxter. I'm...Andy. I come by here every day reading to the patients...I hope it's alright."

I glance over at Sophie...she is still exactly where she was the last time I was here. I look back over at him. "I don't know if it will even matter...she has been in a coma for over six months now. I would hate for you to just be wasting your time."

"Ma'am...really it's no trouble. She can hear us you know. It's only time that will help her heal...and maybe she will wake up soon."

"They keep telling me that but I'm beginning to lose my faith. I pray every day that she is going to wake up and be alright...but I just don't know."

"If it makes you feel any better...I was in a coma for 3 years. My family never gave up on me and here I am. I remember them coming to visit me...talking to me. I thought if I could do it...we all can. Like I said it just takes time."

"Well then....I guess it will be alright. You sure you don't mind though?"

"I'm positive." He steps aside so that I can sit down.

As he is getting ready to leave I stop him."Andy...you said..."

"Yes ma'am."

"Would you care to stay and read with me here?"

"No...not at all." I watch him come back over and grab another chair to sit down beside me. He opens the book back up and starts reading. At the end of the chapter he closes the book. "I know it sounds boring....but it's on my reading list for school."

"It's fine...I actually like hearing your voice...maybe my Sophie will too." I grab a Kleenex and wipe the stray tear that slides down the side of my face. "Sorry...I'm just so emotional."

"I understand...my mom was the same way. It's hard not knowing if your loved one is ever going to be ok."

"May I ask....what happened?"

"Oh...I was in an accident. I was a stupid kid who thought nothing would happen. I left a party not being able to even stand on my two feet. Anyway I crashed totaling my car and I nearly killed the other driver. It caused massive reconstruction surgeries...I don't remember any of the pain or healing due to being in the coma so I guess that was a good thing. My parents came to see me every day and worked my muscles out and all my siblings would take turns reading to me or play music. It's crazy how a simple act of kindness can make a huge difference." I see the wheels turning in her head. Everyone always wants to know if I'm still using so I save her the trouble of asking me. "I'm clean now...I haven't had anything in over two years and I'm going to the local college here...going in to Physical Therapy. I also help run this local recovery center for those going through similar things."

She nods her head in approval. "I'm glad you are better now...you know I come here every day, talking to her. I tell her about my day. But I think she might like hearing you read to her...or maybe even bring her some music to listen to. She never liked my kind of music."

"I would be delighted to come read to her. Was she also in an accident?"

Stinging comes to the bridge of my nose and a small lump forms in my throat. I can feel the tears come even more now. I don't know why talking about her bothers me so much but it does.

"Sorry...it's none of my business...you don't have to tell me."

"Maybe another time...if that's alright."

"Ok....well it was nice talking with you. I need to get out of here so you can spend some time with her. Maybe I will see you tomorrow."

"Maybe. Thanks Andy...for just understanding."

"No problem."

As he leaves the room, I reach over and hold her warm hand. I stand up and move the hair out of her face, placing it nicely behind her ear and then I kiss her cheek lightly."What a nice young man...that Andy. You would like him Sophie. I hope you don't mind that he will be coming to read to you...maybe even play you some sweet music. The kind you like."

After I tell her about my day I leave for the night.

Andy's POV:

I get there a little earlier today and the curtains are closed. I walk over and open them up to get some sunshine in the room. Of course when I look over at her she is still out. I take out my phone and put in the ear buds and then put on YouTube...my playlist...because I am not sure what she will like. I place the buds in her ears and crank up the music.

"There you go...you can listen to the most awesome music ever. Hope you don't mind but while you are doing that I am going to brush out your hair."

I raise the bed into a sitting position and push the pillow down to help hold up her back and her neck. I get out the brush from her side table and start stroking her silk hair. I can hear the beat to the music play and I bounce around to the beat of Justin Timberlake, one of my favorite songs.

When I am finished brushing her hair, I decide to work out her legs. I bend them and then straighten them, then bend again...counting to twenty for each leg and then I do her arms. I'm sure her mom will be alright with it. That is when I notice all the scars. I never would be able to do it myself, but I have come across several others that have attempted it. It's sad to think of this young beautiful girl going through those feelings. Maybe one day I will be able to really help her.

When I am done I turn off the music and take out the ear buds. "Well hope you enjoyed a little music today...now time to read. I have to get this read by the end of the week...sorry it's a little boring."I start reading and before too long I dose off myself, dropping the book against my chest.

I feel someone touch my shoulder startling me and when I open my eyes her mom is looking down at me. "Oh...I so did not mean to fall asleep....crap what time is it?"

"It's going on five."

"Shit....I'm going to be late...sorry...I hate to rush off."

"It's alright...thanks for coming today."

"You are very welcome...by the way...Sophie did great today. She listened to music and even let me brush her hair out...hope that was alright."

I watch as she looks at her daughter admiring her beauty. "That was really nice of you...thank you."

"No problem...see you tomorrow." I rush out the door...hopefully I won't be too late getting to my night class.

Author's Note: So I decided to add another character...what do you think of Andy?

I'm hoping only a few more chapters...but you never know. Thanks for taking the time out to read my story.
