Golden Maple Farm

Song: I cant breathe by Bea Miller

Two days later I am standing in front of a freaking barn...a barn. They have got to be kidding me. I don't know what my mom said to the lawyers or the judge but whatever it was worked because here I am on this farm in the middle of nowhere instead of the physic ward.

I notice the sign over to the right hand side, 'Golden Maple Farm' Right behind it is this amazing full golden maple tree. Guess that is where they got the name. My mom gets out of the car first and then makes me get out."It's going to be alright...you will see. Come on Sophie they are coming out to greet us."

I look over and sure enough this older couple is walking over to the car. I reluctantly get out and stand behind her. I watch as the woman hugs my mom. She has this amazing smile on her face. "Jessica...it's so nice to see you again. This must be Sophie." She let's go of her and then comes over to hug me.

I take a step back. I'm not ready to just hug a complete stranger and even if this stranger knew my mom as if they have not only met before but like they actually know each other. The guy shakes my mom's hand and nods his head in my direction. "Nice to meet you young lady...hope you enjoy yourself here on the farm."I roll my eyes and my mom of course huffs about it.

So I tell him, "I'm sure...thanks for letting me stay here."

"Well let's show you to your room and then I will have someone to show you around the place." He starts to walk off towards the one house.

Don't get me wrong it was really pretty but it's not home. The house was amazing. It had a kitchen and living room for everyone to share. There were two bedrooms downstairs and three up stairs with two bathrooms. No one was in the house at the moment so I wondered how many people lived here and if someone did live here where in the heck were they.

"Well this will be your room." He says.

"Wow...it's so beautiful," replies my mom.

I look around not impressed at all. So there is a nice bed with a nice comforter that has a yellow/grey print on it and there is a dresser and one small chair with a desk. The walls are painted a light yellow to match the bed. There is only one bed in here so I assume the room will be all mine so that will be a good thing.

"What do you think Sophie?" She beams with excitement.

"Whatever."

"Well make yourself at home and I will have someone come to show you around alright."

"Yeah...okay." I set the one bag down and my mom puts the suitcase with my clothes in it on the bed.

"Would you like me to help you unpack?"

"No...I will get it later. I'm sure I will be bored to death and it will give me something to do." I give her a fake smile.

A few minutes later there is a knock on the door. "Excuse me...I'm Julie...I stay in the room next to you. Mr. Heartland asked me to show you around. We call him Mark though."

"It's nice to meet you Julie...I am Jessica and this is Sophie she will be your new roommate...or should I say house mate." She gives her a nice handshake.

I just throw my hand up in a wave."Well come with me and I will show you around."

We follow her out the bedroom and back to the main part of the house. "You will find everything here. If there is something you need just let Mark or Anna know. They go shopping once a week." She opens up the pantry. "So we all have a shelf and we don't take things without asking someone alright. If it's on your shelf it is yours...anything on this shelf is for anyone as well as anything on that counter there." She points to the counter. "The fridge is almost the same...if it's something that is your just right your name on it. Everyone is good about not messing with other peoples stuff alright."

"Ok."

"There is one TV in the living area and we all just take turns choosing what to watch. And by the way there are no phones out here."

"Seriously...why not?" I have to ask.

"This is a place for healing...phones are a distraction and so we don't have any. But there are lots of other things to do here come on I will show you."

We follow her outside and she shows us the barn with the horses and then behind the barn all the other animals. Freaking animals...honestly I can't stand them and the smell alone makes me want to toss my cookies. They have got to be kidding me. I give this a week and I will be finding my way out of here. We walk over to another building where everyone just happened to be at. "This is the art barn...we all come in here to paint, draw, write...make things. There is also time to do homeschooling if needed for those who haven't finished high school."

"I'm actually in college."

"Oh...you look so young tell me your secret?"

I give my mom a look and she looks back at me with a smile. I roll my eyes at her.

Julie ignores me and turns back to everyone in the room. "Guys...Sophie is here." She gestures towards me like she is one of those girls from the Price is Right. I try to smile but it's not working. "Sophie this is Denise, Jose and Sydney. They will be living with you."

After she shows me around my mom gets ready to leave. "Now you are going to be fine. If you need anything you let them know and if you need me tell them and I will come alright."

"Sure."

"Sophie...please just give this place a chance alright. We are running out of options."

"Mom...how many times do I have to tell you...you can't just fix this...me...you can't expect this place to heal me and make me a new person."

"Sophie...I love you for you. I just want what is best for you." She reaches over and hugs me again before getting in the car to leave me here with all these strangers on this godforsaken farm.

I hear gravel crunching towards me  with each footstep and I don't bother looking over, Anna comes by my side. "Sophie we were just getting ready for dinner would you like to help."

I want to tell her no but that would be rude so I just nod my head and follow her to the kitchen.

"You can help make the salad if you want. Do you know how to cut the veggies?"

"Yes ma'am." She hands me the knife and I start in on cutting. Julie and Sydney also help make things. I don't ask about the guys but when I look out the back window I see them around the grill cooking.

Once everyone is finished preparing the meal we all go outside and sit under this massive covered patio. The table sits over twenty people and at the moment is loaded down with a variety of foods. Mark says the blessings and then everyone digs in to eat.

I only get a few things here and there, not really wanting to eat. I sit and listen to everyone chatting about what's going on in their lives. There is a car that pulls up and even though I can't see it; I hear the door open and close and then that is when I see him walking over towards us.

I watch him sway over to Anna and bend down to peck her cheek and then shake Mark's hand. He glances my way and winks and then moves the chair out to sit down and make himself right at home. Suddenly I am no longer hungry. I place the napkin back on the table along with my fork.

I watch him talk to everyone and I soon find out that Anna and Mark are his parents. What the hell. This was all planned out. My mom and Andy and his parents...they all had this planned out for months. I feel betrayed...no one ever asked me what I wanted. I feel the tears forming in my eyes. My mind won't shut off.

"And you thought it was a just another place...a place to get rid of you."Emily sits in one of the empty chairs looking back at me. "Your mom came her before...yes she left you here knowing he would be here too."

"I don't understand."I look across the table to Ava. She is twirling a fork in her hands.

"Please Sophie...you really think your mother was going to just leave you with complete strangers. She has been friends with this family for a while now...ever since you were in the coma."

"Why here...why him?" I whisper.

"She really likes him...and she wants you to like him." Emily looks over at Andy and then back at me. "She wants you to stay here forever. Did you really think you would ever go back home; I don't think so Sophie."

"She hopes he will change you...that this place will change you." Ava smirks.

"What if I don't want it...what if I don't want any of this?" I slam my hand down on the table and stand up. "God dammit." This time I say it loud enough for everyone to hear. Everyone stops to look at me.

I take a deep breath and close my eyes. When I open them back up everyone is still looking at me. "I...I'm sorry..." My hands are trembling and I feel the freaking tears sliding down my cheek. "Please excuse me."

I turn and take off running back towards the house. I open the door and continue to run to the room. Once there I slam the door and slide to the floor and let it all out. This whole time they had this shit planned out...the brochures all of it. He knew all about it and never said a damn word. He played me just as much as she did.
