Chapter 3
Later after school let out, I packed my stuff and walked over to Mary's locker and helped her pack up.
"I know that I'm gonna be gone for about a month, but I gotta find them. I'll miss you. I'm leaving first thing tomorrow and looking for them. Make up an excuse to cover for me please." I pleaded. She looked like I was crazy. I probably am.
"Well duh I'm gonna cover for you! Who do you think I am? I'm not your BFF for nothing you idiot!" I stared at her in astonishment. But then again, what should expect from a very, extremely loyal BFF. I mean if you have one, that's great! I've got an overprotective one. I just smiled.
"Thanks!" I said. I helped her gather the rest of her stuff in her bag and we walked toward her bus. We said goodbyes and she hugged me so hard, I couldn't breathe. She does that. A lot! I got onto my bus and rode home. When I got home I opened my mouth and then closed it the next second. I already forgot my family was missing, again, even though I just talked to Mary about this. Curse my short-term memory.
I sighed and dropped my stuff next to my desk like I normally would and plopped down on the couch with my phone. I started to scroll through YouTube when I heard a knock on the door. I was startled by this and leaped behind the couch. My hand instinctively flew towards my collar where I kept my sword and dagger charms. I had found a dagger in the woods while training. I also figured out that I could merge the weapons together and get a bow and a quiver with unlimited arrows. I also learned how to summon foxfire and use fox magic. Fox magic is a lot of different types of magic that can be performed by foxes. Since I am part fox, I can use fox magic like my brother.
Another knock came upon the door and I peeked from the corner of the couch. I started to slip behind rows of sofas and made my way towards a window. For some reason, I always get paranoid whenever I was left home alone. I've been able to sense different spirits around the house that the others never paid attention to. More so they don't know that the spirits are even there. I peeked through the window slightly and saw police cars.
"Hello? Anyone home?" said a musky voice. I jumped back and rammed my back into the couch. I put my hand over my mouth to muffle my groan. Luckily the couch didn't make noise so the fact that I was here wasn't blown. I silently crawled my back to my original spot when the officer said something that made me jump.
"Katheryn Chung. We know you're home alone. You're not in trouble. Please let us in. We have something to talk to you about." I stopped mid crawl and got up. I slipped over the couch and opened the door.
I looked up and saw one tall officer. I looked down and saw two other cops who were inches below my nose. All of them were fat. Why are they all so fat?! I thought to myself. I looked down at the officers and signaled them to move back with my hand, but they didn't get the message. I gave up and swung the screen door open and hit the officer right in the nose.
"Ow!" groaned the officer. I swallowed the urge to laugh and stepped outside.
"Hello. How may I help you?"I said as I shut the screen door behind me. The man that I "accidentally" hit in the nose straighten his back and cleared his throat.
"Ahem. Good afternoon Ma'am. May we come inside? We would like to discuss private matters." I was confused but opened the door for them. They walked in and I pulled out some chairs at the dining table for them to sit.
"Can I get you anything to drink while you settle in?" I asked. They are technically my guest so I suppose I'll offer them something to drink. They nodded and I went to the fridge to fetch them some soda. I passed the drinks around and got myself a glass of water. While sipping some water, I felt the tension in the air start to build up. I could definitely tell that they didn't want to tell me something but they had to, so I took the liberty to read their minds. After some few agonizing minutes have passed, one of the cops got the courage to speak.
"So um...I'm just going to be straightforward with you and tell you what's going on." He adjusted his collar and continued. "Your family is dead. The cause of their deaths is still unknown. You were lucky to be home at that time." I choked on my water while hearing this. When I read their minds, they were thinking about who should talk. I guess while I was getting my water, they were discussing who would talk.
"Wait, what?!"
